KDE Plasma has always been seen as a very productive environment and thanks to KDE Neon it is possible to enjoy it to the fullest. This is something that GNOME users lacked, but not anymore. GNOME OS is arriving intending to be a test system. Here we will tell you what this is all about.

Welcome, sir

Remembering that GNOME OS is a Linux-based operating system, for some users, it is the ideal dream in a desktop environment. However, the main intention of this is that the project contributors can make full use of it. This is to give them a better idea when submitting reports that will result in more polished user experience. Let’s hope so.

However, we must not fail to mention the immense domain that has been spoken about in the Linux forums. In recent years, due to the appearance on the scene of KDE neon, which for all effects, is the official distributor of the KDE project. On the other hand, it is based on the stable, with time it becomes the support of Ubuntu LTS; it deploys in the environment of the desktop and applications of KDE, when it maintains as a rolling release. For the same reason, KDE neon provides a stable foundation with the deployment of the software keeping it in the latest version, captivating many users.

GNOME OS in the style of KDE neon is made with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It is also applicable to CentOS and CentOS Stream, but the latter case gives different results; in the GNOME desktop environment, with included applications, plus rigorous continuous update maintenance with the plan itself. It is worth mentioning that GNOME OS does not exist, or at least as some users imagine it to be.

GNOME OS IN VIRTUAL MACHINES

GNOME OS aims to be a runtime system on physical machines while waiting for the time to come, the developers have released a test image for use in QEMU/KVMM-type virtual machines. Which you can install by following the instructions on their official GNOME MAIL SERVICES page.

One aspect to take into account is the Flathub repository pre-installed, providing the use of multiple applications. Although many do not have udev standards for drivers, they do not currently provide GNOME OS or the package itself in Flatpak format.

GNOME OS is a system focused on users who aspire to better performance on the desktop. On the contrary, the idea is not to compete with Fedora and Ubuntu; its distribution has been playing the role of the official operating system of the environment for years. Due to its relationship with Fedora, Red Hat, and GNOME.

Conclusion

Although KDE Plasma has KDE Neon for many users, GNOME did not have something similar. This is something that many users were demanding, so today with the arrival of this project, you can be sure that the impact of the project’s contributors will be positive.

The arrival of GNOME OS, though not in the form that many expected, is a step forward for all users of this desktop environment.

The day has finally arrived and after several months of development GNOME 3.36 has arrived loaded with many new features and of course general improvements.

By now I think that almost everyone knows what GNOME is, but in case you do not, I will quickly explain that it is a complete modern desktop environment for Unix systems, for example, FreeBSD, but especially Linux. It is considered one of the best because it is aesthetically very nice and because it is the default desktop environment of Ubuntu.

So recently we have learned that there is a new version, in particular, is the 3.36 that stands out mainly for being a release immediately prior to the release of a new Ubuntu LTS. So it is possible that this is the version chosen for Ubuntu 20.04.

Gnome 3.36 important features

On the other hand, with this version, we will be able to manage the extensions of the desktop without the need to resort to third party applications.

Gnome extensions screen

There you will be able to update, remove or disable extensions in a quick and easy way.

One of the aspects that sometimes goes a little unnoticed is the screen lock of the desktop environment. So GNOME 3.36 improves and makes it more functional and simple to use.

The New lock screen on Gnome 3.36

If you are a person who works a lot with GNOME, you will appreciate that in this new version there is a Do Not Disturb button in the notifications.

Do not disturb mode

This new feature is aimed at a busier user than one who does not use GNOME as much for work. So, with the button activated the notifications will be hidden.

However, there are many new developments related to other parts of the environment. For example, the GNOME web browser simply called WEB can now open PDF files. In addition, its visual appearance has been improved and includes a new dark mode.

We also have Boxes that do not pretend to be a rival of VirtualBox but that fulfills its purpose efficiently. In GNOME 3.36 there is a welcome tutorial, introducing users to the various features offered. t also now has a new creation assistant when creating virtual machines. Another very important point is that Boxes now includes support for UEFI booting.

Another very important new feature is the system settings window.

System settings

Now the sections have been rearranged, making them easier and faster to navigate.

Also, the privacy section now lists applications that have been granted permission to access location services, camera, and microphone.

Other improvements

This all looks pretty good, but there’s a lot more news. These are minor but together they make GNOME even more solid:

GNOME’s initial setup assistant was refreshed with a cleaner and more efficient look and feel.

Users of NVIDIA’s proprietary drivers will be able to launch applications using the discrete GPU from within GNOME Shell now.

Hidden files can be used as new document templates in Files.

Music has improved support when downloading missing cover art for albums.

But there are also other changes from the default applications. Thus Rhythmbox has been replaced by GNOME Music, Shotwell by GNOME Photos and Evolution by Geary.

Conclusion

This release of GNOME continues to build on the good work of previous versions. So thanks to the new features presented we can say that GNOME continues to be, along with KDE Plasma, the reference desktop environments in Linux.

The only question that remains is if this is the version that will include Ubuntu 20.04, as it seems that it is.

One of the best things about Linux is the ability to customize. Everyone can transform their Linux distribution any way they want thanks to this capability. However, it is good to say that there are desktop environments more customizable than others, where KDE Plasma in this aspect is the pointer. On the other hand, Ubuntu and Linux Mint are the most popular distributions and do not use KDE Plasma but GNOME and Cinnamon respectively. So, today I will show you 3 great icon themes to install in your Linux distribution.

What is an icon theme?

First I start by saying it is an icon theme. They are simply icons customized by a creator that couple with your system by modifying the icons of the applications, the tray, and the emblems. In addition, they are very popular in Linux because not only are they limited to modify the appearance but in many cases even imitate that of other operating systems. So, it is quite interesting, if you have never done it, I invite you to try.

So, let us start.

Best 3 icon themes for your Linux system

1. Papirus

Papirus is one of the most popular and beautiful icon themes of all Linux. This set of flat icons, colorful and quite uniform, will give a sophisticated touch to your GTK-based distributions like GNOME, Cinnamon, and XFCE. It has some variants for dark and light themes.

Papirus icon theme

If you use Ubuntu or Linux Mint you can install it using the following commands.

:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:varlesh-l/papirus-pack
:~$ sudo apt update
:~$ sudo apt install papirus-gtk-icon-theme

And then, activate it on the system settings.

2. La Capitaine

This icon theme is dedicated to users who like Mac OS. As I said before, Linux can be customized so that it can mimic the look and feel of other systems. In this case, La Capitaine is inspired by Apple’s Mac OS and Google’s Material Desing. The result of applying it is a pretty modern system taking the best of the apple company.

La Capitaine icon theme

If you want to install it, you can follow these instructions on your system.

cd ~/.icons
git clone https://github.com/keeferrourke/la-capitaine-icon-theme.git

And that’s it.

3. Moka

Moka is another icon theme that is quite well known. With simplicity in mind, Moka makes your Linux distribution look elegant but simple.

3.- Moka

To install it, run these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:moka/daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install moka-icon-theme

Conclusion

Linux is quite customizable and you can take advantage of that to make your distribution look pretty good.

Flat-Remix is a pretty simple icon theme inspired by material design. It can be installed on all Linux distributions that use GNOME as a desktop environment. It is also released under the GPLv3 license, which guarantees that you can modify and reuse it.

In addition, the theme is available in several versions (Main, Dark, Light) as well as an icon theme and for GNOME Shell.

Install Flat-Remix Icon set on any Linux Distribution

If you want to install Flat-Remix in any Linux distribution, I have the good news that is quite simple.

In the first place, you have to install git to clone the Git repository of the project. Open a Terminal, and then, type:

:~$ sudo apt install git

3.- Installing git to clone the repositories

Now you can clone the first repository (icon set), to do it, run:

:~$ git clone https://github.com/daniruiz/flat-remix

4.- Cloning the repository

Second, clone the other repository (GTK theme).

:~$ git clone https://github.com/daniruiz/flat-remix-gtk

The only thing left to do is to create the local folder where the theme will be.

:~$ mkdir -p ~/.icons && mkdir -p ~/.themes

Then, copy the contents of the cloned folder into the new one.

:~$ cp -r flat-remix/Flat-Remix* ~/.icons/ && cp -r flat-remix-gtk/Flat-Remix-GTK* ~/.themes/

GNOME Boxes is one of the best virtualization software you can find out on Linux. It’s a part of the GNOME software family that’s both simple to use and provides powerful control over virtual OS. GNOME Boxes is capable of running almost all the operating systems as a guest OS on any supported platform.

It’s a lot simpler and easier to use. This tool allows any inexperienced and general Linux users to enjoy the full advantage of virtualization technology.

It’s also a great alternative to the VirtualBox. Are you interested in other VirtualBox alternatives? Check them out!

Why use GNOME Boxes

There are a number of reasons you should consider adding GNOME Boxes into your arsenal.

First of all, it’s a virtualization software that allows you running other systems on the same hardware. You won’t have to install the OS natively in your system. That’s also the sole purpose of VirtualBox. However, because of the simplicity, you don’t have to go through all the detailed system specification for the virtual OS.

In addition, you can also use it for managing remote systems over the network. That’s a powerful thing if you’re working on a corporate environment.

In your lifetime, unless you’re a super easy-to-go lady/gentleman, you obviously heard the name of VirtualBox, right? It’s one of the most popular software that’s both amazing and serves perfectly. Just like the name suggests, it’s a virtualization software that’s both free and open-source with a huge community backing it up. You can use VirtualBox to check out newer Linux distros or a different distro, even try out the Windows system if you need.

However, there’re more software than VirtualBox for getting the job done. Here are some of the best alternatives for VirtualBox that you can enjoy right now!

VMware Workstation Player

If you’re looking for something as powerful as VirtualBox, then VMware is one of the best choices you can make. VMware Workstation Player provides everything you need to run a virtual operating system right from your desktop.

With enough hardware resource, you can run almost ALL the operating systems in the world! There are 2 different versions of the Workstation Player – Workstation Player and Workstation Player Pro. “Pro” is the paid version that offers some advanced features like running multiple VMs at once, taking VM snapshot, create and manage encrypt VMs etc. However, the normal one fulfills all the basic features that general users will need to check out new systems.

Get VMware Workstation Player.

GNOME Boxes

GNOME is a big software family that contains almost all the essential software, including this cool virtualization tool! Yes, GNOME Boxes is a great virtualization software that you can enjoy for free.

If you prefer something really simplistic like VirtualBox, then GNOME Boxes is your right choice. In fact, it’s even easier than the legendary VirtualBox! Keeping simplicity in mind, GNOME Boxes arranged everything in a way that you won’t have any confusion on what you’re doing. Featuring all the necessary virtualization features and hardware support, this software will become one of your favorites pretty easily.

Check out GNOME Boxes!

QEMU

Another really popular choice for virtualization. It’s a very simple yet powerful one, just like VirtualBox. It’s also completely free and open-source.

QEMU is able to virtualize any system on any hardware provided that the platform is supported by the program. The tool allows very fast performance on the guest OS, nearly the performance of the native OS. Get QEMU.

Virtual Machine Manager

Virtual Machine Manager (virt-manager) is basically a command line tool for performing virtualization on a system. Don’t worry as it also provides an elegant, simple and powerful GUI to perform all the tasks for a general user. The primary targets of virt-manager are the KVM VMs. However, it’s able to handle Xen and LXC pretty easily. Get virt-manager.

Hope you liked the tools. There are also other software to perform the jobs. Feel free to share your thoughts.

Enjoy!

If you’re a Linux user, you obviously know the name of GNOME – one of the most popular desktop environments of all. Over the period of time, it found its way in all the major Linux distros – Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian, CentOS and a lot more. GNOME also went through a long process for upgrades and modifications. Now, Ubuntu and CentOS (current versions) are disabling a security feature of GNOME. This security feature was introduced back in 2017.

The name of the feature is Bubblewrap. This is a sandbox environment that provides the secure GNOME thumbnail parsers with the release of GNOME 3.26.

Bubblewrap – protection to the thumbnailing

Thumbnails are the little icons that sit next to each of the files and folders/directories to give you a slight idea what you can expect inside it. The little icons are actually pretty useful and some of the thumbnails are now the synonyms of different popular software.

Each time you navigate through a file or folder/directory, the system generates thumbnails. This process is performed automatically by thumbnail parsers – scripts that create the icon.

In recent years, security researchers identified that thumbnail parsers can also act as an attack vector when a hacker can trick a user into downloading a trap file on their desktop. The thumbnail parser then executes the malicious code.

This is the reason why GNOME Project added the Bubblewrap feature for the thumbnail parser scripts in GNOME.

Bubblewrapper missing!

According to a German journalist and security researcher Hanno Boeck, Ubuntu is currently disabling the Bubblewrap support inside their GNOME shell environment for all the recent OS versions.

According to Google security researcher Tavis Ormandy, the Bubblewrap sandboxes were also not present in the default CentOS 7.x version.

However, Ubuntu has a valid and reasonable explanation for the behavior. Alex Murray, Ubuntu Security Tech Lead at Canonical described that Ubuntu team opted to disable the feature because they didn’t have enough time and resource to audit the Bubblewrap feature.

According to Murray, Bubblewrap is relatively a new piece of software that performs complicated things to set up those sandboxes. They didn’t want to enable the feature because even if there’s any possible vulnerability in the process itself, then it may cause major disasters.

Murray also said that criticizes are valid. However, for making sure to provide a high-quality distro, every single package has to undergo through a thorough review process and that takes time. He also assured that the feature is most likely to get to the mainstream.

USB drives are one of the best ways to travel with your favorite movies and personal files without carrying the large laptop or other components. Of course, there are pocket PCs available in the market but not all of us use those on a regular basis.

Are you in need of writing multiple USB devices at once? Meet GNOME-multi-writer – an effective tool that can successfully write multiple USB flash drives at once. There’s no limit how much drives it can handle. The only limitation is the file size – 1GB to 32GB, nothing bigger.

Quick note – make sure that your USB drives are big enough to house the data properly.

Installing GNOME-multi-writer

For installing GNOME-multi-writer, you have to get the package from either Pkgs or from your distro repository. Run the following commands according to your Linux distro –

Ubuntu

sudo apt install gnome-multi-writer

Debian

sudo apt-get install gnome-multi-writer

Fedora

Download the appropriate RPM package. Then, run the following command –

sudo dnf install gnome-multi-writer-3.28.*.rpm

OpenSUSE

Download the proper RPM package and run the following command –

sudo zypper install gnome-multi-writer-3.26.0-lp150.2.6.x86_64.rpm.html

Arch Linux

Get GNOME Multi Writer for Arch Linux.

Other Linux distros

Check out Pkgs.org to find out the appropriate package for your Linux distro.

Using GNOME-multi-writer

This tool is only able to write down ISO files. That means, this tool is also great to burn the ISO of a system, for example, the installation image of Linux distros.

If you have an IMG – raw image file, you need to convert it to ISO first. Use “ccd2iso” to convert it. The command line would be –

ccd2iso /path/to/filename.img /destination/path/filename.iso

If you want, you can even make an ISO of your important folder! Run the following command –

mkisofs -o <iso_filename>.iso /home/<username>/folder

After you’re ready with your ISO file, it’s time to burn the image. Fire up the tool –

sudo gnome-multi-writer

Here’s the main window of the tool.

For choosing your ISO, go to menu >> Import ISO file.

We like Opensuse and so much so that we have already talked about it on other occasions, we teach you how to install it and we give you some tricks so that after installing it, it can be ready for daily use.

OpenSUSE is that great GNU/LINUX distribution, that like few others makes us feel in a business environment, being one of community character. I admit that I will always be in love with it, because I started using GNU/LINUX with her when I was a teenager. It is always known that OpenSUSE has a predilection for the Plasma desktop, but the truth is that it treats everyone equally, with Gnome being a great aleternativa in this distribution of the chameleon.

Gnome and OpenSuse: a great duo

OpenSuse is such a well-done and thought-out distribution that it’s not really difficult to use whatever desktop environment you choose, you could, for example, use Plasma or XFCE and the way you work would not be affected; that’s doing things right. Although there is always a favorite desktop environment and in this case it is Gnome.

Gnome is a veteran of the GNU/LINUX desktop environments and is mega known to be the default one used in Ubuntu and Debian, two of the most popular and used distributions in the world. With a minimalist concept that is not exempt from many controversies and sometimes serious failures, it is a reference to a clean and simple environment focused on productivity and integration.

However, GNOME and its overly minimalist concept is not to the total liking of many users, and so they prefer other desktop environments, despite GNOME’s efforts to move forward with its concept, it becomes a bit difficult to be entirely productive if we don’t have extensions.

GNOME extensions provide additional features that add functionality and possibilities to the user experience. We will see how to install, the extensions that for the author are the most necessary.

Install firefox plugin to install plugins from the gnome extensions site

In order to install GNOME extensions from your website, we must install a Firefox extension from this link directly. After that, click on the add firefox button and wait for it to download and then, we must to install chrome-gnome-shell from official repositories through terminal:

sudo zypper install chrome-gnome-shell

And now, we must to restart gnome: ALT + F2, write r and enter.

Finally we can go to the GNOME Extensions website and install the ones we want.

1.- AlternateTab

By default, GNOME’s ALT+TAB is a bit short of functionality, activating this extension means that the windows are not grouped by application, but each one is shown as it is, and we also have some options to increase customization. It comes already installed in a clean installation of OpenSuse with Gnome and only needs to be activated from Gnome-Tweak-tool.

1-Gnome-tweak-tool on opensuse

2.- DashToDock

Some of the best in all of GNOME. No exaggeration. Turn your favorite applications into a dock, with many customization options and without having to install third-party applications.

As it does not come standard in the official OpenSuse repositories, we must enter the GNOME Extensions website and activate it from there. Here is the direct link to the extension. Next we must activate the extension through the Gnome Tweak Tool, where we can also access the configurations and adjust the behavior to our needs:

3.-Removable Drive Menu

If you work with removable devices whether they are external hard drives, partitions or removable memories, this is the extension for you, as it allows us to add a status menu for accessing and unmounting removable devices. Direct link to extension, here.

Activate the extension from the site and then we get a pop-up window asking if we want to install it, press install and that’s it.

4-Installing Removable Drive Menu

And then, as always, we set out to activate it from the Tweaks tool.

5-Activating Removable Drive menu

4.- Drop Down Terminal

This is one of the most important extensions, if you are like me, that I cannot live without using the terminal, or if you are learning to use it. Deploy a ready-to-use terminal from the GNOME top bar. Simply wonderful. We can access directly from this link. We activate it and then go to Tweak Tool to initialize it.

6-Installaing Drop Down Terminal

5.-NetSpeed

NetSpeed is an extension that allows us to monitor the speed of a network interface we select, to know at what speed of download or upload. Very useful if you have slow connections or simply want to know the behavior of the network. Through this link we can access it directly.

As a conclusion it is remarkable to say that GNOME is a great desktop environment focused on the simplicity of its component programs but that through the extensions we can add features that help us to be more productive.

Gnome and Opensuse are a great combination to have if you want to get started in this world of GNU/LINUX.

If you’re a Linux user, you’ve definitely heard about the famous desktop environment – GNOME. It’s one of the most popular and mainstream desktop environments that offer lots of comfort and flexibility. Interestingly, you’ll find the basic interface of it quite similar to Android or other smartphone OS. The apps page is quite powerful and systematic, but can be disorganized.

Do you want to folder out every apps according to different category? You have the option of switching to different desktop environment like Xfce, KDE etc. but this also can be done on GNOME. In fact, the folder system is quite similar you would do on Android.

Now, let’s take a look how to do the job with this simple script.

Prerequisites

Before we dive deep into the script, let’s set up the system first. You need Git to download the script. Let’s take a look at how to install Git.

You also need to update your Python to the latest version. For checking the version, run this command:

python3 --version

You have to use the Python 3. You may already have Python 2 installed, but that won’t be necessary for running this script.

After installation is complete, you can download the script from GitHub.

Downloading the script

Run this command:

git clone https://github.com/BenJetson/gnome-dash-fix

Now, change the working directory to the downloaded folder:

cd gnome-dash-fix

Add the following file permissions:

sudo chmod +x interactive.py

sudo chmod +x appfixer.sh

Running the script

For running the script, launch the “interactive.py” using this command:

python3 interactive.py

You’ll have to go through different questions and steps. Answer them and the script will create the needed modification in the system.

If you have problem running the script, you should change to the legacy bash script. Run the script using the following command:

./appfixer.sh

However, you should exercise caution as this shell script uses a tool called “gsettings”. There’s no way of undoing the system changes, so use it as a last resort if you’re desperate and/or facing problem running Python 3 or other system issue.

Removing the app folder

If you want to revert the changes of your system, run the script. Except this time, select “option 3” that will remove all the modification from your system.

Everything should be up and running. Enjoy!
