Things to Do After Installing Linux Mint 19

Linux system is obviously one of the most powerful systems to have. They’re free, open-source and provides blazingly fast performance than the traditional Windows, despite Windows being a better option for gamers. If you’re a Linux user/enthusiast, you may already have experienced the new Linux Mint 19. Check out Linux Mint 19 features.

Is Linux Mint 19 your current system? Or, you’re planning on getting Mint 19 ready in your virtual machine? Whatever you choose to do, here are a few things to do after you’ve completed installing Linux Mint 19.

Things to do

1. Update your system

This is the most important thing after the installation is complete. At first, make sure that your update server location is the nearest for the fastest experience.

Then, start up a terminal and run the following commands –

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

My system is up-to-date, so there’s nothing to do. However, for newly installed systems, you’ll have a lot of things being upgraded.

Don’t forget to check out the “Update Manager” as well.

2. Set up graphics drivers

Graphics drivers are one of the most important parts of a system if you’re using a discrete graphics card. You may have a hard time setting everything up. Let Linux Mint handle all of it.

Start Drive Manager –

I’m using nothing special, so there’s no need for me to get any additional drivers. If you’re using an NVIDIA or AMD graphics card, you’ll have to install it from the window. Just select the driver and click “Apply Changes”.

3. Set up “snap”

Snap is one of the most powerful things about Linux. You can easily run all the snap packages on any platform that supports the “snap” core. On Linux Mint, run the following command on a terminal –

sudo apt install snapd

After the installation is complete, don’t forget to run this as well –

sudo snap install core

Now, feel free to get your favorite snap packages from “snap” store!

4. Install programs

If you’re going to enjoy your system, you need all your favorite software and tools at disposal. Feel free to install all your favorite apps from the “Software Manager”.

5. Media codecs

Media codecs are one of the most important things for enjoying your collection of media files. Linux Mint doesn’t come up with pre-installed media codecs for licensing issues.

For getting all the media codecs for playing your favorite media files, run the following command –

sudo apt install mint-meta-codecs

6. Customize your desktop

There are a number of things you can do to change the feel of your desktop. Even the slightest change has the potential of improving your Linux Mint 19 experience.

For example, you can change your desktop background –

You can also add a number of themes like Oranchelo, Uniform, Papirus, Evopop, and Arc etc. to give your system a really good feeling.

7. Backup with Timeshift

This is one of the most powerful features of Linux that makes backing up your system way easier than before.

After you’ve set everything properly, don’t forget to make an initial backup so that whenever your system becomes corrupted, you can get at the fresh and working state instantly.
