Yes, friends. The day has come. It has recently been published that Linux Mint 20.2 has been released as a new update to the 20 branch based on Ubuntu 20.04.

Linux Mint has become one of the most popular distributions in the world. It has arguably taken Ubuntu to a level of practicality and usability that makes it ideal for novices but also all kinds of professionals.

If there is one thing that distinguishes Linux Mint, it is a continuous but solidly based development, which makes it very stable and user-friendly for everyone thanks to a selection of software that makes it complete.

Linux Mint 20.2 Features

So, based on Ubuntu 20.04 it inherits from it the possibility to have the kernel 5.8, Mesa 20.2.6, and Xsever 1.20.9 Also, it is supported until 2025 which means it has plenty of time left.

The Update Manager now supports Cinnamon spice updates (i.e. updates for applets, desklets, themes, and extensions). So from one place, you can update the whole system.

On the other hand, Linux Mint doesn’t like Snap packages and that’s why the Snap Store is disabled in Linux Mint 20. Anyway, they explain how to enable it again.

In Linux Mint 20.2 the Update Manager is now able to remember how long each update has been available for, how many days the computer was ON during that time, and assess whether or not a notification would be welcome to remind you of available updates. All this from the system notifications. No distractions. No hassle.

Also included in this new version is a new application called Bulky. With it, you can rename a lot of files quickly and without problems. Another successful point of the development team in favor of productivity.

The new app on Linux Mint 20.2

With every release of Linux Mint, we find a new version of Cinnamon. Linux Mint 20.2 includes Cinnamon 5 which includes many improvements in Nemo and memory consumption and performance. In addition, you can set the maximum amount of memory it can consume.

Cinnamon Memory usage

Where can I get it?

Well, all versions of Linux Mint 20.2 have been released in their various desktop environments. As always, for these distributions, we recommend at least 2gb of ram and 20gb of disk space, and a modern processor.

The corresponding links are on the Linux Mint website, as always we recommend using Torrents so as not to saturate the servers.

Enjoy it!

Hello, friends. We recently published the news that Rocky Linux 8.4 was available with a fully stable ISO. We are very happy about it because it joins AlmaLinux as a guarantor that the legacy of CentOS will not die. So, now in this post, we will tell you how to migrate from CentOS 8 to Rocky Linux 8.4.

As we all know Rocky Linux is one of the most anticipated distributions of this year. The so-called, with permission of AlmaLinux OS, the replacement for CentOS, is finally approaching us with a fully stable and production-ready version.

Ideally, if you are starting a new project, you will have to download the ISO image and install it from scratch, but if you have a production server, this may not be ideal. So the migration process although easy can always be problematic.

So, let’s get started.

Migrate from CentOS 8 to Rocky Linux 8.4

The process is quite simple thanks to a script that the community has prepared. So it shouldn’t take that long.

First, you have to completely upgrade your system. This step is essential for the success of the process.

sudo dnf upgrade

Then, reboot the system to make sure all changes are applied including kernel-related changes.

sudo reboot

After the system reboots, we can now download the script.

curl -O https://raw.githubusercontent.com/rocky-linux/rocky-tools/main/migrate2rocky/migrate2rocky.sh
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current
Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed
100 27069 100 27069 0 0 128k 0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 128k

Now give the script permissions to run

chmod +x migrate2rocky.sh

Now, we can run it locally with the command

sudo bash migrate2rocky.sh -r

This will start the whole migration process which may take some time depending on your computer resources and connection speed.

At the end, you will see a message like the following

1.- Migrate from CentOS to Rocky Linux

And finish the process by rebooting the system

sudo systemctl reboot

When it starts, you can verify the migration by running

cat /etc/os-release

2.- Rocky Linux OS

So, enjoy it.

Hello, friends. Today we are happy because a distribution that we are very fond of is celebrating. Because today we’ll tell you what’s new in the release of OpenSUSE 15.3 that was released a few hours ago.

The newest minor version of openSUSE Leap is the most recent, rock-solid addition to the openSUSE 15.x series that carries all the positive attributes of its predecessors. The main new feature of this release is that it strengthens the workflow between Leap and SLE. Making this release one of the most stable to date.

This release is hugely beneficial for migration projects and user acceptance testing. And one of the reasons is that OpenSUSE 15.3 is built with the same binaries as SLE. One example is that with a BTRFS file system, users can test in Leap, deploy to SLE and even roll back to a previous Leap snapshot.

So this version of Leap is aimed at the regular user but also keeps an eye on the enterprise world. Quite a marvel.

What’s new in OpenSUSE 15.3?

First of all, we have XFCE 4.16 available with a new color scheme and icons that give it a personality of its own. In the case of GNOME, it is still available version 3.34 which is not current but has been patched to be even more stable.

If you are a fan of KDE Plasma, you will once again enjoy version 5.18 which is LTS so, once again, you will have a stable desktop environment with no surprises.

On the container side, it’s all the same versions of Leap 15.2, but there are security updates for all packages like containerd, podman, kubeadm) and cri-o.

If you work with AI and Machine Learning, Leap 15.3 includes TensorFlow, PyTorch, ONNX as well as Grafana and Prometheus. So you’ll be well served.

Where can I download it?

You can download OpenSUSE 15.3 from this link. There you can have several methods on how to get it on various architectures.

If you want to know what’s new, it’s best to read the full announcement.

Enjoy it!

A few hours ago we were surprised by the announcement of a new version of GeckoLinux Rolling Release. In this post, we will tell you the main features of this release.

As we all know GeckoLinux is a Linux distribution-based and fully compatible with OpenSuse. It has two versions, the first one is the Static version which is based on Leap and the second one is the Rolling version based on Tumbleweed.

Well, recently the creator of GeckoLinux has informed that he has released a new version of GeckoLinux ROLLING updating all the packages and incorporating new features.

So, GeckoLinux ROLLING spins are generated directly from unmodified openSUSE Tumbleweed and Packman repositories, and the installed system can be updated directly from those official sources. GeckoLinux continues to be focused on eliminating pain points and polishing its unique out-of-the-box configuration on top of the stable and flexible openSUSE base.

GeckoLinux uses the Calamares system installer, providing easy but powerful options for reliable installation of the live system.

What brings us this new version of GeckoLinux Rolling?

First, the default filesystem for the various Calamares guided installation options is now Btrfs with transparent Zstd data compression.

On the other hand, for the users of new Ryzen hardware, the `xf86-video-amdgpu` driver is included out-of-the-box. This will allow users to enjoy a more polished experience with the system.

Additionally, zRAM swap is enabled out of the box, and the EarlyOOM daemon is also enabled to help prevent unrecoverable system freezes in low memory situations

As far as software is concerned, the Linux kernel is 5.12.3, and all GeckoLinux editions feature Firefox 88. So, you should have no problem if your computer is modern.

Also, note a large number of desktop environments that have been updated:

Gnome 40

Cinnamon 4.8.6

Plasma 5.21.5 / KF5 5.82 / KDE apps 21.04

Budgie Desktop 10.5.3

LXQt 0.17

XFCE 4.16

Mate 1.24

So you can choose your favorite desktop environment via the corresponding ISO.

To download this new version, you have to visit the project website. There you will find the corresponding links.

Hello, friends. We have some great news for you. Rocky Linux 8.3 RC1 is available which indicates that we are getting closer and closer to a stable version of a distribution called to be the replacement for CentOS 8 after the change that has left us all speechless.

Rocky Linux is a community enterprise Operating System designed to be 100% bug-for-bug compatible with Enterprise Linux, now that CentOS has shifted direction.

This resulted in the creation of a fork to continue the CentOS spirit, this distribution is called Rocky Linux.

Being one of the most awaited distributions because of the importance of CentOS 8, we are getting closer and closer to a stable version. Rocky Linux 8.3 RC1 has been released to speed up the development process.

Although RCs are near-stable releases, the Rocky Linux website tells us that “Under no circumstance should you use a release candidate in a production environment. A release candidate is provided for testing and validation purposes only“. So only use it on a personal computer or virtual machine.

This release is the result of several months of hard work in the process of integrating CentOS into this new distribution. For now, we only have images for the x86_64 and aarch64 architectures.

The exact date when we will have the first stable version? we don’t know yet, but the development team says it will be this year if everything goes well.

Download Rocky Linux 8.3 RC 1

As mentioned above, there are only images for x86_64 and aarch64 architectures. So, you can download them from the corresponding section of the website.

The x86_64 image can be downloaded from this link while the ARM64 (aarch64) image can be downloaded from this link.

That’s why in this post, we present you the new features of Linux Kernel 5.12 that has been released recently.

What’s new on Linux Kernel 5.12

Months after Linux Kernel 5.11 a new version is released highlighting support for DualSense, the PlayStation 5 controller. Therefore this feature makes it the highlight of the release.

As with every new version of the Kernel, support for a lot of hardware is added. Some of the hardware highlights include support for Nintendo 64, which in practice is not that relevant, but contributes to the virtualization of this legendary console.

On the GPU side, the new Linux 5.12 improves support for Intel’s Rocker Lake and Tigerlake iGPUs. Also, it includes Variable Rate Refresh (VRR) support for Intel Xe graphics technology integrated into Tiger Lake generation processors.

In the case of AMD, the RX 6800 and RX 6900 series have received overclock support with OverDrive. The AMDGPU driver has received enhancements and ACDC support to manage power and speed according to the power source (battery or AC).

Of course, in this new version, there is better support for Intel, AMD, and ARM processors. For example, support for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G is now included. On the other hand, to avoid unnecessary work, support for very old ARMS processors has been removed.

Linux 5.12 has also improved support for Microsoft’s Surface devices, and support for the Lenovo laptop platform has been added.

As always there is much more news like improved BTRFS support, compatibility with new audio mixers, like the Pioneer DJM-750, and improved audio debugging.

If you want to know all the new features we recommend you to visit this link

Hello, friends. Fedora is one of the most important desktop Linux distributions out there along with Ubuntu, Linux Mint, OpenSUSE, and even Debian. Recently Ubuntu released a new version and a few hours ago Fedora did the same. So in this post, we will tell you the news about Fedora 34.

Recently the development team announced the arrival of Fedora 34 in all its versions. The Workstation version which focuses on the desktop, and in particular, it’s geared toward software developers who want a “just works” Linux operating system experience comes with GNOME 40 as the main new feature.

In this version, we find many updated packages apart from the Graphical Environment highlighting the inclusion of Linux 5.11 to handle modern hardware. In the spin-off theme, Plasma now uses Wayland by default. Also, Xfce 4.16 and LXQt 0.16.0 make their debut in the XFCE and LXQT spin-offs.

If you are an audio content creator, then you will notice that PipeWire replaces PulseAudio and Jack. as the audio server. While many may not like it, it’s certainly a step forward in Wayland integration. Proof of this is that some Xorg-x11 packages have been removed.

No matter what variant of Fedora you use, you’re getting the latest the open-source world has to offer. For example, Ruby 3.0 is included in this release along with Golang 1.16. So if you want to develop applications in these languages, this version looks like an ideal choice.

How to get Fedora 34?

Fedora 34 is now available for public download and you can visit the download section of the project and download it from there.

You can also try some of the spinoffs that give us the power of Fedora 34 but with other desktop environments. To do so, go the section dedicated to them.

Although I recommend you to use torrent for the download. So, you can go to the alternative downloads section.

If you already have Fedora 33 on your computer, you can then migrate to Fedora 34 from this post.

So, enjoy Fedora 34.

Hello friends. Fedora is a very popular distribution that is characterized by frequent updates. But it also allows version jumping, that’s why today you will learn how to migrate from Fedora 33 to Fedora 34.

Fedora has an upgrade process that is quite easy to learn. Although it is always recommended to do installations from scratch, it is possible to upgrade without doing a clean upgrade.

In this respect, Fedora is one of the safest distributions to upgrade to, although there is always a risk involved. So let’s get started.

Migrating from Fedora 33 to Fedora 34

First of all, I would like to say the following:

The process is quite safe but I recommend you to make a backup of all your files as well as uninstall all third-party software to avoid incompatibilities.

On the other hand, the fastest and most efficient method is to do it via terminal so this is the way we will use.

Open a terminal from the main menu or connect via SSH to your computer.

Then, with the help of the
sudo
command, change to the root user of the system.

sudo -i

Then make sure that the whole system is fully up to date before starting the process.

dnf --refresh upgrade

Depending on what is needed, this process may take longer or shorter, but in any case, it is necessary to upgrade the system.

At the end of the process, you have to reboot the system. This is to ensure that all upgrades are applied.

reboot

After this, install the
dnf-plugin-system-upgrade
package which allows you to upgrade using DNF.

dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade --best

With this package, we can now start the upgrade process.

dnf system-upgrade download --refresh --releasever=34

1.- Migrate from Fedora 33 to Fedora 34

The
--releasever=34
option states that we will upgrade to version 34 which is the next higher version than 33 which is where we will be migrating from.

Upon executing the command, we will be asked if we are sure to perform the process:

Before you continue ensure that your system is fully upgraded by running "dnf --refresh upgrade". Do you want to continue [y/N]: y

Applying the changes

Then the whole process of downloading and installing the new packages will start.

When the process is finished, you will get an output screen similar to this:

Running transaction check
Transaction check succeeded.
Running transaction test
Transaction test succeeded.
Complete!
Transaction saved to /var/lib/dnf/system-upgrade/system-upgrade-transaction.json.
Download complete! Use 'dnf system-upgrade reboot' to start the upgrade.
To remove cached metadata and transaction use 'dnf system-upgrade clean'
The downloaded packages were saved in cache until the next successful transaction.
You can remove cached packages by executing 'dnf clean packages'.

Now to apply the change and upgrade you need to run the command:

dnf system-upgrade reboot

This will reboot the operating system and boot will apply all the changes. The process will take time according to the capabilities of your computer and the number of packages you have installed.

Afterwards, the system will continue to run and you can check if the process was successful by running the following command from a terminal

cat /etc/fedora-release

Output:

Fedora release 34 (Thirty Four)

So, enjoy Fedora 34.

Hello friends. The mythical Slackware distribution had been preparing something for us for a long time and a few hours ago it has been concreted. Slackware 15 Beta has been released and thanks to it many rumors that the project was dead have been denied.

What is it Slackware?

Referencing the Slackware website:

The Official Release of Slackware Linux by Patrick Volkerding is an advanced Linux operating system, designed with the twin goals of ease of use and stability as top priorities. Including the latest popular software while retaining a sense of tradition, providing simplicity and ease of use alongside flexibility and power, Slackware brings the best of all worlds to the table.

So Slackware is not oriented to all users like Ubuntu or Linux Mint but focuses on advanced users.

One of the reasons why it is still very much loved by the community is that it is very old. This has made it the basis of many projects that we can use today.

The Slackware Linux Project has aimed at producing the most “UNIX-like” Linux distribution out there. That is why stability is one of the main flagships of this distribution.

What’s new in Slackware 15 Beta?

As this is a new release, you will find many updated packages, but Slackware is all about stability.

First of all the core of the distribution has been updated with the arrival of GCC 10.3 and also the inclusion of the 5.10 kernel in the installation. But not only that, but you can also install the 5.11 kernel from the Testing repository.

But in the section of the desktops that in the end is what the user sees, we have GNOME 3.36 with some packages of 3.38. Also in the future Slackware will include GNOME 40. For Plasma users, you can enjoy version 5.21 and in the case of XFCE version 4.16.

Firefox 87 and Thunderbird 78.9.0 are included for smooth browsing and emailing. In addition to this, Python 3.9 guarantees support for this language for a long time to come.

So you can take a look at this beta version by downloading the 64bit version from this link. And the 32bit version from this link.

More info on the changelog

Nextcloud is an open-source application, which allows you to host files in the cloud. With the possibility to see having all the files available anywhere and at any time. Also, a few days ago the annual conference of the project was held, and immediately after it was announced the launch of Nextcloud 20. Possibly the most interesting version of the last ones announced by the developers.

Similarly, Nextcloud is becoming a self-hosted productivity solution. With which it no longer depends on the large clouds of services from the giants of the IT sector.

On the other hand, the name with which it should be called would be “Nextcloud Hub” is the name of the suite since the release of version 18. The latest version of Nextcloud, incorporates some important additions to the platform.

Nextcloud 20: What’s new?

The latest version of Nextcloud, including new features and improvements, should be big enough. With the goal that all users of previous versions of Nextcloud have to fight for the upgrade.

The new version of Nextcloud, include a new dashboard that replaces (only if you want). To the file application as default section when accessing Nextcloud. Also, the new dashboard is focused on the configurable modules so they can visualize the most important sections for the user. For example, upcoming events in the calendar, mention of email or social networks, and recommended files.

On the other hand, the three most important features of Nextcloud 20 are:

A new panel that provides an excellent starting point for the day It also includes more than a dozen widgets ranging from Twitter and Github to Moodle and Zammad already available.

The search was unified and brings together search results from Nextcloud applications and external services such as Gitlab, Jira, and Discourse in one place.

The talk introduced the bridge to other platforms, including MS Teams, Slack, IRC, Matrix, and a dozen others.

On the other hand, it incorporates improvements in the application.

Files that allow you to add a description to public link shares.

Flow adds push notifications and webhooks so that other web applications can easily integrate with Nextcloud.

Text entered direct link to files in Nextcloud.

To learn more are the new features of Nextcloud 20 visit the official announcement.

Conclusion

Nextcloud is multiplatform to allow working from a computer or a mac. Also for phones or tablets, either Apple or Android.

The improvements of Nextcloud 20 do not stop there but focus almost all around the new dashboard and global search function.

On the other hand, the announced import change with the integration of more than a dozen third applications.
