Hello, friends. Security in communications is very important nowadays and every day more and more questions arise about security in WhatsApp. So today I will show you how to install Signal Desktop client on Debian 11 / Ubuntu 20.04 / Linux Mint 20.

What is Signal?

Signal is a messaging service that comes to compete with WhatsApp and Telegram. As you can imagine it is less popular than these two but it is very well valued by advanced users. The reason is that Signal is committed to offering the highest level of privacy possible.

Signal uses an end-to-end encryption protocol called Open Whispers Systems for all communications. This means thatmessages are sent from your mobile phone already encrypted and are only decrypted when they reach the recipient.

While I love installing Telegram Dekstop on Linux, it is also true that Signal offers better security. That is why it is so important for many users.

So, let’s get started.

Install Signal Desktop Client on Debian 11 / Ubuntu 20.04 / Linux Mint 20

One of the great advantages of Signal Desktop Client is that the source code is open to everyone. So you can examine it and see that there are no backdoors or malware. And also as you can imagine, it enjoys great support for Linux and especially DEB distributions.

So, open a terminal and make sure to update the whole system.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Then, download and install the official GPG key from the Signal repository by running these two commands:

wget -O- https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt/keys.asc | gpg --dearmor > signal-desktop-keyring.gpg
cat signal-desktop-keyring.gpg | sudo tee -a /usr/share/keyrings/signal-desktop-keyring.gpg > /dev/null

Now add the official Signal repository run:

echo 'deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/signal-desktop-keyring.gpg] https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt xenial main' | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.list

Refresh the APT cache

sudo apt update

And finally, install Signal by running

sudo apt install signal-desktop

sudo apt remove signal-desktop

So, enjoy it.

Conclusion

Signal is an application to take into account if we want to have the maximum privacy possible in our communications. Even though it is not that popular, it is useful for many people who don’t want to compromise their communications.

Hello, friends. The current communications could be said to be at their best. Many tools and services are oriented to it. Today, in this post, you will learn how to install Viber desktop client on Ubuntu 20.04.

What is Viber?

Viber is a mobile messaging service similar to WhatsApp or Telegram. It features messaging and files sending like any other but its principal distinction is that Viber focuses on calls.

So, Viber has support for calls of very good quality that even exceeds those of Whatsapp or Telegram. It is widely used in certain sectors where the security of data transmission is a priority.

Also, your conversations on Viber between all the devices you use, whether mobile, tablet, or desktop, are fully synchronized.

Other features include group chat, sticker creation, shredding messages, and the ability to install it on distribution such as Ubuntu.

Unlike Whatsapp, Viber offers a native client for Linux. This makes it much more convenient to use it from your computer without interrupting your workflow.

Another point where it differs from Whatsapp or Telegram is the possibility of creating communities. Communities are the new social network and the best way to bring people together. To give us an idea, imagine a group chat, only with no limit on the number of members, more administration control, and new conversation features.

Viber takes security very seriously because the encryption keys exist only on the user’s devices and nowhere else. So no one, not even Viber, can read your messages.

So, let’s install it.

Install Viber Desktop App on Ubuntu 20.04 / Linux Mint 20

Viber has a download section where you can find the DEB package for Debian, Ubuntu, and derivatives. Also, you can download the APPImage which should work on any distribution.

So, go to the Viber website and proceed to download the package.

Download Viber Desktop app for Linux

Also, you can download it via terminal with the help of the
wget
command

wget https://download.cdn.viber.com/cdn/desktop/Linux/viber.deb

Then to install it, double click on the package or simply run this command in the terminal.

sudo apt install ./viber.deb

This will install it and when finished, you will be able to run it from the main menu.

When you run it, configure your account so you can enjoy the service.

1.- Viber desktop app on Ubuntu 20.04

Alternatively, you can use Viber by downloading the APPImage file provided. To do this download it from the website or via
wget
.

wget https://download.cdn.viber.com/desktop/Linux/viber.AppImage

Assign it to run permissions

chmod +x viber.AppImage

And run it by double-clicking on the file. Enjoy it.

Removing Viber on Ubuntu 20.04

In case you no longer want to use Viber, you can uninstall it in the following way

sudo apt remove viber

If you used the APPImage, then, there is nothing to uninstall, just remove the file and you are done.

Conclusion

Viber is a messaging veteran that although it is not so popular it has an important market share. Also, its Linux support is quite good which makes it a solid alternative to others.

Yes, friends. The day has come. It has recently been published that Linux Mint 20.2 has been released as a new update to the 20 branch based on Ubuntu 20.04.

Linux Mint has become one of the most popular distributions in the world. It has arguably taken Ubuntu to a level of practicality and usability that makes it ideal for novices but also all kinds of professionals.

If there is one thing that distinguishes Linux Mint, it is a continuous but solidly based development, which makes it very stable and user-friendly for everyone thanks to a selection of software that makes it complete.

Linux Mint 20.2 Features

So, based on Ubuntu 20.04 it inherits from it the possibility to have the kernel 5.8, Mesa 20.2.6, and Xsever 1.20.9 Also, it is supported until 2025 which means it has plenty of time left.

The Update Manager now supports Cinnamon spice updates (i.e. updates for applets, desklets, themes, and extensions). So from one place, you can update the whole system.

On the other hand, Linux Mint doesn’t like Snap packages and that’s why the Snap Store is disabled in Linux Mint 20. Anyway, they explain how to enable it again.

In Linux Mint 20.2 the Update Manager is now able to remember how long each update has been available for, how many days the computer was ON during that time, and assess whether or not a notification would be welcome to remind you of available updates. All this from the system notifications. No distractions. No hassle.

Also included in this new version is a new application called Bulky. With it, you can rename a lot of files quickly and without problems. Another successful point of the development team in favor of productivity.

The new app on Linux Mint 20.2

With every release of Linux Mint, we find a new version of Cinnamon. Linux Mint 20.2 includes Cinnamon 5 which includes many improvements in Nemo and memory consumption and performance. In addition, you can set the maximum amount of memory it can consume.

Cinnamon Memory usage

Where can I get it?

Well, all versions of Linux Mint 20.2 have been released in their various desktop environments. As always, for these distributions, we recommend at least 2gb of ram and 20gb of disk space, and a modern processor.

The corresponding links are on the Linux Mint website, as always we recommend using Torrents so as not to saturate the servers.

Enjoy it!

Many things happen in a network, especially if many users use it. Actually, we don’t know everything that happens on it, and that for some sysadmin or IT professionals is a problem. Basic or relevant information intersect in that exchange. Therefore, there are applications like Wireshark that help to collect statistics on the use of the network protocol and analyze them. With this in mind, today I will teach you how to install Wireshark on Ubuntu 20.04 and 18.04.

Wireshark is a free and opensource web analyzer. It allows you to know from a quite technical point of view what is happening in your network. With this, you can make statistics, specific monitoring or simply know its traffic.

Some of the main features of Wireshark are:

Deep inspection of hundreds of protocols, with more being added all the time.

Live capture and offline analysis.

Standard three-pane packet browser.

Captured network data can be browsed via a GUI, or via the TTY-mode TShark utility.
The most powerful display filters in the industry.

Rich VoIP analysis.

And many more. However, one of the most outstanding features is that it is cross-platform. In other words, you can install it on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, and other systems.

So, let’s install Wireshark.

1. Install Wireshark on Ubuntu 20.04/18.04

To install Wireshark more easily on Ubuntu 16.04, it is necessary to use a PPA repository of its developers. We have two options to install, the developing version or the latest stable version. I’ll show you the process for both, but in this post, I’ll install the stable version. If you use Ubuntu 20.04/ 18.04 this is not necessary.

If you want to install the development version:

Open a terminal and run:

:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dreibh/ppa
:~$ sudo apt update
:~$ sudo apt install wireshark

And that’s it.

Install the stable version:

It is always best to install the stable version of any program. That’s to avoid major bugs and surprises. It is clear that no application is free of bugs, but stable versions are less prone to them.

Open a Terminal and add the external repository with this command:

:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wireshark-dev/stable

1.- Adding the external repository

The multimedia section continues to be one of the most requested topics of Linux. Because until now, Linux is master and master of servers. Within the developers, it has a pretty good reputation that competes for face-to-face with Windows and macOS. But in the multimedia section, it has to be said that it is still a bit behind the competition. In this sense, open-source projects try to shorten the differences with many new libraries or with software that allows shortening differences. It is also true that the differences lie in the drivers of the new devices and in the applications that can be installed in the system. However, today we will show you how to install eSpeak on CentOS 8 and Ubuntu 20.04 / 18.04. With this program, you will be able to transform text to speech and use it in your multimedia or development projects.

eSpeak to convert text to speech

In general, we can say that eSpeak is an application written in open-source C that allows transforming the text into a voice file. In short, it works as a synthesizer.

The application can be installed in multiple operating systems such as Windows, Linux and macOS. However, in Linux there is a fork called eSpeak NG that was born with the aim of facilitating the compilation for unix systems.

eSpeak is quite a wonder. In the first place, because it supports many languages including the most spoken as English, Cantonese, Japanese and others. Also because the audio quality is quite good and is very reliable in its target.

One aspect to keep in mind the application is that it is a tool purely used in the terminal. So you have to get to work on it. But do not worry the community has developed a graphical interface for the program called <g class="gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="5" data-gr-id="5">gespeaker</g>.

So, let us install it.

Install eSpeak on Ubuntu 20.04 / 18.04 / Linux Mint 19/20

A great advantage is that eSpeak is an application that is available in the official repositories of Ubuntu- So to install it, just use the following command:

:~$ sudo apt install espeak

Once installed, it will be ready for action. If you don’t want to use eSpeak from the temrinal, you can install gespeaker which is a graphical interface for the application.

:~$ sudo apt install gespeaker

And now you can use the application.

Install eSpeak on CentOS 7 / CentOS 8

In the case of CentOS 7 and 8, they are also available in the official repositories. So as a root user you run some of these commands depending on which version of CentOS you are running:

For CentOS 7:

:~$ su
:~# yum install espeak

But if you use CentOS 8:

:~$ su
:~# dnf install espeak

This way, you will have the application running.

Basic use of eSpeak

The most basic way to use eSpeak through the console is with the following syntax:

:~$ espeak "[text_to_convert]" -w [output_file] -g [x] -p [x] -s [x] -v [language]

I’ll explain briefly. First we invoke the command and pass it the text we want it to “read”. With the -w option we simply point to the path of the output file. The -g option is used to set the pause time between words. -p defines the pitch. To define the reading time we use the option -s and finally we set the language of the reading.

An example would be the following:

:~$ espeak "Hello welcome to osradar" -w /tmp/output.wav -g 10 -p 80 -s 100 -v en-uk

Then, open the file with VLC or another media player.

If you want to use the graphical interface, just install it. This is how it looks.

And enjoy it.

Hello, friends. While it is true that services like Netflix or Amazon Prime are world leaders, there is another alternative like IPTV. So in this post, you will learn how to install Hypnotix which is the IPTV client that offers us Linux Mint.

Recently the Linux Mint development team informed that a new version of Hypnotix is available. This IPTV client is in a very early stage of development but it is usable from now on.

Install Hypnotix on Linux

For now, as it is a rather early stage of development, Hypnotix is only available in DEB format so it is perfectly compatible with UBuntu 20.04 onwards.

If you use this distribution or Linux Mint 20 or any derivative, just execute these commands:

wget https://github.com/linuxmint/hypnotix/releases/download/1.1/hypnotix_1.1_all.deb

And then install it with APT

sudo apt install ./hypnotix_1.1_all.deb

Remember that this installation can also be done using your system’s graphic interface.

Install Hypnotix on Linux Mint 19.3

Linux Mint 20 is a marvel but there are still users who use the reliable Linux Mint 19.3

Trying to install Hypnotix on this system will cause a dependency error. You can fix it, installing the package python3-imdbpy_6.8-2_all.deb

wget http://lug.mtu.edu/ubuntu/pool/universe/i/imdbpy/python3-imdbpy_6.8-2_all.deb

And install it:

sudo apt install ./python3-imdbpy_6.8-2_all.deb

And then, if you can download and install Hypnotix as before.

Using Hypnotix

As soon as the application is installed, we can run it from the main menu without problems.

Once you do it, you will see the following screen

1.- Hypnotix on Linux

It’s really easy to use the application but it’s what Linux Mint always does to take everything to the next level of ease.

Conclusion

Linux Mint continues to offer us solutions to remain the distribution that best suits the novice. In this sense, this application is another step forward. It won’t be ready for version 20.1 but it’s moving forward and today it’s usable.

Hello friends. It seems that the discord with the Chromium package has come to an end and the Linux Mint team has already packed it. Now, let’s see how to install Chromium web browser on Ubuntu 20.04 / Linux Mint 20.x

Chromium is an open-source browser project that aims to build a safer, faster, and more stable way for all users to experience the web. In case you didn’t know, Chromium is the basis of the well-known Google Chrome and they share many features. They only differ in the support of proprietary multimedia files and small things more.

The problem came when Ubuntu 20.04 included Chromium in Snap fromat. This forced users to use Snap if they wanted Chromium.

Now, this has changed because the Linux Mint team has packaged Chromium in DEB form so it is now easier to do.

Let’s get started.

Install Chromium web browser on Linux Mint 20

The Chromium DEB package has been included in the different versions of the Linux Mint repositories.

Therefore, the installation can be done using Synaptic or from the terminal by executing the following command:

sudo apt install chromium

And it will automatically start the download and installation process.

Install Chromium web browser on Ubuntu 20.04

In the case of Ubuntu, we have the Ubuntu native option which is to use the snap package. If you prefer, this method is the most recommended in Ubuntu.

So, open a terminal, and run:

sudo snap install chromium

and so the download and installation process will begin.

Then, run it from the main menu.

Install Chromium web browser on Ubuntu 20.04 (II)

We will also be able to take advantage of the DEB packages that the Linux Mint team has made available to us.

This method, although secure, does not provide automatic updates and therefore these packages must be downloaded periodically.

So, open a terminal and download the necessary packages:

wget http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/upstream/c/chromium-browser/chromium-browser_2020.10.27_all.deb
wget http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/upstream/c/chromium/chromium_86.0.4240.111~linuxmint1+ulyana_amd64.deb
wget http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/upstream/c/chromium/chromium-dbg_86.0.4240.111~linuxmint1+ulyana_amd64.deb

Now, proceed to install them:

sudo apt install ./*.deb

Then, run Chromium from the main menu.

1.- Chromium web browser on Ubuntu 20.04 / Linux Mint

Conclusion

Chromium is a great alternative to Google Chrome although it is true that on Linux, the favorite of many is Firefox.

The good thing is that we continue with many different alternatives, previously, Edge has come to Linux and now we have new alternatives for the installation of Chromium thanks to Linux Mint.

No matter how complete and robust a programming language is, the programmer will always need a tool to write the code. These programs have to be complete and with features that can speed up the coding process. We usually call these programs IDE. There are IDEs that support many languages making them a Swiss army knife but there are others that are more specialized. So in this post, I will show you how to install RStudio on Ubuntu 20.04 / 18.04. It is almost impossible to write R code without using RStudio.

R Language and RStudio

RStudio is an IDE created especially for the R programming language. Its mission is to provide a statistical computing environment for R allowing analysis and development for anyone to analyze data with the language. As expected, it has all the common characteristics of an IDE.

Some of the features of RStudio are as follows:

Syntax highlighting.

Code debugging.

Integrated documentation and support.

Management of various folders and workspaces.

However, other possibilities can be done with RStudio. For example, with RStudio you can do many data analyses relatively quickly.

RStudio is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux which makes it cross-platform and open source with the AGPL license.

Install RStudio on Ubuntu 20.04 / 18.04

RStudio is just an application to take advantage of all the potential of R. Everything from a comfortable graphic interface made in QT.

This leads to the conclusion that we must first install the R language in this system before continuing.

To do this follow our instructions in this post

How to install R programming language on Ubuntu?

Once R is correctly installed, we can start the installation.

RStudio is not available from the official Ubuntu or Linux Mint repositories, but this does not mean that we cannot install it.

To do it first, you have to download the package for Ubuntu 18.04 from the RStudio website.

If you want to do it from a terminal (faster and more efficient) you can type the following command:

:~$ wget https://download1.rstudio.org/desktop/bionic/amd64/rstudio-1.2.5042-amd64.deb

Once you download it, you have to install it. Since this package has some extra dependencies that you probably don’t have installed, you can use gdebi to install it.

If you do not have gdebi installed, you can use the following command:

:~$ sudo apt install gdebi

Once installed, now you do install RStudio on Ubuntu 18.04 / Linux Mint 19.x with the following command:

:~$ sudo gdebi rstudio-1.2.5042-amd64.deb

1.- Install RStudio on Ubuntu 20.04 / 18.04

After some time installing the program, it will be available to run.

2.- RStudio

So, enjoy it.

Conclusion

RStudio is a vital application for working with R. It is used by many scientific and data analysis institutes that do very important mathematical tasks for society. So we are talking about a very important program for the world.

RStudio has paid versions that further increase the potential of it, but in the end it all comes down to potential.

Hi, folks. In this post, we will show you how to install Arduino IDE on Ubuntu 20.04/ 18.04 and Linux mint 19.x.

You probably already know what Arduino is but in case you don’t, I’ll explain it briefly.

Arduino is a company that is behind the manufacture of an electronics platform whose main feature is that it aims to facilitate the use of electronics in all kinds of projects. However, the main novelty of this is that it does so from the philosophy of Open Hardware.

This philosophy allows the devices to publish to the public all the diagrams and specifications of it. This is great for learning and small projects. In short, Arduino gives the foundation for creating other electronic boards.

Another aspect of the Arduino boards is that it is possible to use this board along with other materials such as sensors and create such important projects as a mechanical arm. Of course, this requires software and here is another advantage of Arduino: the entire software kit is free and accessible.

Arduino IDE is a program that will help you program Arduino boards quickly and easily. The Arduino programming language is Wiring based and has a very low learning curve. We will install it today.

Install Arduino IDE on Ubuntu 20.04 / 18.04 / Linux Mint 19.X?

A big advantage of the Arduino IDE is that it is cross-platform and this makes it possible to install on Linux without any problems. However, in this case, we will do it in Ubuntu/Linux Mint.

First, go to the download section of Arduino IDE and download the package for Linux 64 bits.

In my case, I will do it from the terminal using the wget command.

:~$ wget https://downloads.arduino.cc/arduino-1.8.12-linux64.tar.xz

There is a wide variety of database managers today. Of all of them, MySQL continues to be the most prominent within open source. On the other hand, PostgreSQL is also a robust alternative that has a special share in market projects. Maybe being less popular but just as robust we have SQLite. So today I’m going to show you how to install SQLite on Ubuntu 20.04 / 18.04.

SQLite is a small, reliable and very fast database engine. It is one of the most efficient database engines in the world. In part, thanks to that made in C Language which makes it very efficient in managing the resources of the system.

In like manner, the development of SQLite is so important that many major companies participate in it. This is done through the SQLite Consortium. In addition, all the code is available to be downloaded, viewed and reused for being open source.

So, let us start.

Install SQLite on Ubuntu 20.04 / 18.04

SQLite is a very light and powerful program. It will not take long. In addition, to simplify the whole process, SQLite is available in the official repositories of Ubuntu 18.04 and Linux Mint 19.

So, first, you need to update the APT cache.

:~$ sudo apt update

1.- Update the repositories cache

Then, you can search the repositories for SQLite-related packages.

:~$ sudo apt-cache search sqlite

2.- SQLite packages

Then you can start installing SQLite. To do this, run the following command:

:~$ sudo apt install sqlite3

3.- Install SQLite on Ubuntu 20.04 / 18.04

After that, you can check the installed version by running the following command.

:~$ sqlite3 --version

4.- SQLite version

And that’s it.

The first steps with SQLite

Now, it is convenient that I show you the first steps with SQLite. Let us create a test database.

:~$ sqlite3 example.db

5.- Creating a new database with SQLite

In the SQL language, databases are composed of Tables. So, let us create an example table named “Student”.

sqlite> CREATE TABLE Student
               (
               Id VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL,
               Name VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL,
               Last_Name VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL,
               Age INTEGER(2) NOT NULL,
               CONSTRAINT pk_Student PRIMARY KEY (Id)
               );

6.- Creating a new table

In the previous image, it is shown that we have created a table with several fields and where the Id field is the primary key. This is SQL language so you have to learn it in order to use SQLite correctly.

After that, you can check that the table was created.

sqlite> .tables

7.- Show the table

Then, you can insert some values on the newly created table.

sqlite> INSERT INTO Student (Id, Name, Last_Name, Age) VALUES ('Xy01','Jon','Snow',18);

8.- Insert some data

Finally, use the Select command to show the data inserted.

sqlite> SELECT * FROM Student;

9.- Show some data

Now, you can use SQLite to make projects. Type .exit to close SQLite shell.

Bonus: How to install SQLite Browser

As a bonus, I will teach you how to install the SQLite Browser which is a front-end for SQLite. It is quite complete and will help with data visualization and data management. So, run these commands:

:~$ sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:linuxgndu/sqlitebrowser
:~$ sudo apt update
:~$ sudo apt install sqlitebrowser

10.- Install SQLite browser

Next, open it from the main menu.

11.- SQLite browser

Enjoy it.

Conclusion

SQLite is a great database application and if we learn to use it, it would be a great help for our projects. Installing it is very easy and gives us a lot of work possibilities. In addition, the SQLite Browser makes the workflow too easy.
