Linux system is obviously one of the most powerful systems to have. They’re free, open-source and provides blazingly fast performance than the traditional Windows, despite Windows being a better option for gamers. If you’re a Linux user/enthusiast, you may already have experienced the new Linux Mint 19. Check out Linux Mint 19 features.

Is Linux Mint 19 your current system? Or, you’re planning on getting Mint 19 ready in your virtual machine? Whatever you choose to do, here are a few things to do after you’ve completed installing Linux Mint 19.

Things to do

1. Update your system

This is the most important thing after the installation is complete. At first, make sure that your update server location is the nearest for the fastest experience.

Then, start up a terminal and run the following commands –

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

My system is up-to-date, so there’s nothing to do. However, for newly installed systems, you’ll have a lot of things being upgraded.

Don’t forget to check out the “Update Manager” as well.

2. Set up graphics drivers

Graphics drivers are one of the most important parts of a system if you’re using a discrete graphics card. You may have a hard time setting everything up. Let Linux Mint handle all of it.

Start Drive Manager –

I’m using nothing special, so there’s no need for me to get any additional drivers. If you’re using an NVIDIA or AMD graphics card, you’ll have to install it from the window. Just select the driver and click “Apply Changes”.

3. Set up “snap”

Snap is one of the most powerful things about Linux. You can easily run all the snap packages on any platform that supports the “snap” core. On Linux Mint, run the following command on a terminal –

sudo apt install snapd

After the installation is complete, don’t forget to run this as well –

sudo snap install core

Now, feel free to get your favorite snap packages from “snap” store!

4. Install programs

If you’re going to enjoy your system, you need all your favorite software and tools at disposal. Feel free to install all your favorite apps from the “Software Manager”.

5. Media codecs

Media codecs are one of the most important things for enjoying your collection of media files. Linux Mint doesn’t come up with pre-installed media codecs for licensing issues.

For getting all the media codecs for playing your favorite media files, run the following command –

sudo apt install mint-meta-codecs

Don’t forget to check out all the awesome media players for Linux!

6. Customize your desktop

There are a number of things you can do to change the feel of your desktop. Even the slightest change has the potential of improving your Linux Mint 19 experience.

For example, you can change your desktop background –

You can also add a number of themes like Oranchelo, Uniform, Papirus, Evopop, and Arc etc. to give your system a really good feeling.

7. Backup with Timeshift

This is one of the most powerful features of Linux that makes backing up your system way easier than before.

After you’ve set everything properly, don’t forget to make an initial backup so that whenever your system becomes corrupted, you can get at the fresh and working state instantly.

If you’re an experienced Linux user, you already know what to do after your system is all set. In the case of Linux Mint 19, all these steps can really help you a lot and make your system more enjoyable for the rest of its life.

Linux Mint is one of the most popular Linux distros all over the world. It is super simple and user-friendly and the user interface is easy-to-understand for Linux newbies, especially for those who’ve switched from Windows to Linux. There are tons of other features like stability, performance and security etc.

Mint 19

Recently, Linux Mint is about to release their latest version – Mint 19. We’ve already discussed about all the new things coming with this Mint 19. Here’s a quick recap of all those.

No more KDE

TK 3.22

New “Welcome” screen

Timeshift

Better app loading performance

And others. Don’t forget to check it out.

The GOOD news is, Linux Mint 19 is about to RELEASE!

Mint 19 is about to HAS ARRIVED!

Recently, Linux Mint is putting the Mint 19 ISO into “stable” channel of all their mirrors. For example, let’s take a look at the Kernel.org mirror. Navigate to “stable” folder. You’ll notice that there’s a folder named “19”.

Inside the folder, there are all the available Linux Mint 19 ISOs.

Linux Mint 19 Tara is coming!

Are you a Linux lover? Then you already know everything about Linux Mint, right? It’s one of the most popular Linux distros all over the world. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu that offers blazing performance and power to any system. Currently, the latest release of Linux Mint is 18.3 and the indication towards Mint 19 is really strong. Recently, the features of Mint 19 has been released on the web. Let’s take a look what it will contain.

The codename

Each of Linux Mint’s versions come up with a codename. In the upcoming version, the codename will be “Tara”. The current one – v18.3 – is codenamed “Sylvia”.

What’s interesting is that Mint 19 will be based on Ubuntu LTS 18.04. The version isn’t released officially yet, but depending on the release date, we can estimate that the release of Mint 19 will be around May or June 2018. Unlike Ubuntu, Mint doesn’t follow any strict schedule, so nothing is confirmed except speculation.

Linux Mint 19 will be supported up to 2023.

Features

There are several ensured features available. Here are some of them.

GTK 3.22 – GTK+ is one of the most popular desktop environments. GTK 3.22 is the most stable release of GTK 3 series with stable APIs and theming engines.

No KDE – If you’re a KDE user, it’s a bad news. KDE desktop will no longer be available for Linux Mint. However, you can still have KDE on Mint 19, but unofficially.

New “Welcome” screen – The welcome screen of Linux Mint is going to have a revamp.

Better app loading – Currently, the XFCE and MATE edition of Mint loads apps faster. In the upcoming release, the devs target to provide better experience on Cinnamon as well. They’re also targeting to provide improved overall performance.

Timeshift – Starting from Linux Mint 19, the main show will be the “Timeshift”. It was previously introduced with Linux Mint 18.3, but from now on, it’ll be the center of Linux Mint’s update strategy and communication.

Timeshift allows you take a snapshot of your system and if anything goes wrong, you can restore your computer to the latest snapshot. This feature greatly simplifies the maintenance of your system. This feature can ensure that you’re staying on a stable system all the time.

Update Manager – Unlike the previous ones, the Update Manager will no longer promote selective and vigilance updates. Instead, it’ll rely on Timeshift to guarantee the stability of your system and will suggest applying all available updates.
The “mintupdate-tool” command is replaced with “mintupdate-cli”. This new command is much easier to use and provides better options. Kernel updates now depend on the package managers. So, you can easily remove the obsolete kernels by running “sudo apt autoremove” to get rid of those.

Software Manager – The new Software Manager is also improved with a fine-tuned user interface, improved keyboard navigation and faster searching.
Mint 19 also comes up with built-in support for “.flatpakref” and “.flatpakrepo” for easier Flatpak software installation.

Other improvements

USB stick formatting now supports “exFAT” by default.

Cinnamon 3.8, Mate 1.20 and Xfce 4.12 as desktop environments

“Software Sources” can show the installed packages from PPAs.

No data collection, unlike its core OS – Ubuntu. Another great reason for people sticking with Linux Mint.
