Many devices will not be able to access the Internet as of September 30

Hello! Millions of device users may soon be in for an unpleasant surprise. They will probably not be able to connect to the Internet. Indeed, internet security is essential. Therefore, updates are essential for safe surfing. So, many devices will not be able to access the Internet as of September 30. The problem will affect millions of older devices. Not only computers, but also televisions, cell phones, and others. This is due to the expiration of a root certificate. Let’s see a little more about it.

Alert! Some of your devices may not be able to access the Internet after September 30.

As mentioned, Internet security is essential. One of the ways to guarantee this security is through SSL certificates. Well, companies like Let’s Encrypt provide these certificates. In addition, devices need to have pre-installed certificates as well. These are called root certificates. So the problem arises because a security certificate called DST Root CA X3 will expire on September 30. It is a certificate widely used by services and web pages. It works to establish a secure connection between the device and the server that offers the web. In consequence, after it expires, an internet connection will not be possible.

Indeed, a substitute certificate already exists. Indeed, the ISGR Root X1 is valid until 2035. But its use requires the device to recognize it. Therefore a firmware update is required. The problem is that not everyone is used to update their devices. Moreover, this process is not always automatic. Especially on older devices. It is even possible that there is no updated firmware for the TV or phone.

Which devices will not be able to connect to the Internet

What will happen if your device uses that certificate? It will affect many services and web pages that use secure connections. From Netflix to banking sites, online stores, etc. Surely they will give a connection error and you will not be able to access it. Let’s take a look at some of the devices that will expire on September 30.

  • Cell phones and tablets running Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread or lower
  • Mac computers with macOS 10.12.0 or lower
