FreeFyleSync is a tool focused on file synchronization. It is also open-source and cross-platform. Therefore, it has versions for Windows, Linux, and macOS. In today’s post, we will explain how to use it and the advantages of this tool. So in the following lines, we will learn how to synchronize files with FreeFileSync.

What is FreeFileSync?

The main function of this open-source tool is to synchronize files and folders between different computers. In addition, it offers a simple working interface. In fact, it displays two panels, one for each folder or computer. With two easy-to-use options: compare or synchronize. The first option will generate a list of all files that differ in the comparison. Consequently, we will be able to add them to the folder where they are missing. As for synchronization, we have the option of doing it in either direction or merging. With this last parameter, the files and folders will be mixed on both sides, to always have the same updated copy on both sides.

If we do this task often, then we only need to tell the wizard to create jobs. Then we only have to specify the folders on one side or the other, the synchronization method, and the time span.

How to use FreeFileSync to synchronize files

The first thing we have to do is to download the tool from the official website. In addition, it is possible to install the program in a portable form. But in this case, you have to make a donation. Therefore, I recommend continuing with the normal installation.

Installing FreeFileSync on Windows 10

I’m going, to be honest. The interface is a bit outdated. However, it is very easy to use. So this program is recommended for inexperienced users. Since we will be able to perform the tasks with a couple of clicks. We know that the main purpose is to synchronize files and folders. However, the tool can also compare files and folders to look for any changes. Likewise, there are synchronization variants. Such as Two-Way, Mirror, Update, and Custom for advanced users.

FreeFileSync Main Window

Making the first synchronization

Let’s see how to set up a basic bidirectional synchronization. The first thing you have to do is click on the Browse button in the left pane. Now, select the source folder. Then in the right menu select Browse again and select the destination folder. The program also allows you to drag and drop source and destination folders into the appropriate fields. When you are ready, please click on the Synchronize button. When the process starts, the list of files to be synchronized will be displayed. After confirming, the synchronization process will start.

Starting the file synchronization process.

After a few moments we will see a new window. One shows the completed process and the other shows the log information.

The tool has evolved and now allows synchronization with files in the cloud. Specifically, with Google Drive and SFTP and FTP servers. To do this, simply click on the cloud icon. Then enter the corresponding network credentials.

Ultimately, we have seen how to synchronize files with FreeFileSync. It is an easy way to synchronize files and folders. It is enough to use it regularly to understand all its possibilities. See you later!

Hello, how are you? File synchronization is a convenient way to access information from anywhere. In fact, with only an internet connection is possible to access data, without being physically in front of the device. Additionally, technological giants such as Google and Microsoft offer their own tools for synchronizing files. However, an essential feature of secure synchronization is privacy. For this reason, some users are reluctant to trust their personal information to the servers of these companies. That´s why today we are going to talk about Syncthing. It is an OpenSource application that enables you to synchronize folders between different devices. In addition, it allows you to select folders to share and synchronize with other devices. Well, in this post we are going to see how to install Syncthing on Windows 10.

Prerequisites

In order to enjoy synchronization between two computers, it is imperative that both have the program installed. On the other hand, obviously, both computers must be turned on and connected to the network.

Downloading Sycthing.

As we mentioned earlier, this is a multiplatform program. Obviously, it also has its version for Windows. To download the latest version, please go to the download section of the official website:

Download the version of Windows corresponding to the architecture of your pc.

Once downloaded the application, proceed to decompress the file. It then executes the executable file. Forthwith, a window will appear indicating that the program is being installed. Additionally, you will have to allow the connection of the program through the Windows Firewall.

Start of Syncthing installation. Please allow connection through Windows Firewall.

After these initial settings, it is very likely that the program’s web interface will open. If not, manually enter this address in the web browser: http://localhost:8384/.

Configuring Sycthing

Once the program’s graphical web interface is opened, the wizard will ask for authorization to send anonymous statistics.

Allow the use of anonymous data

After completing the previous step, the program’s graphical web interface will appear. There you can see the address of the folder to share and its statistics. Also, at the moment this folder is not shared. On the other hand, the right menu shows the current device and remote devices.

Synchting Dashboard

Adding a remote device

We have commented that in order to synchronize two devices, it is necessary to have the program installed in both. Well, this connection is made through a unique network identifier, generated by the program. To display the device ID, please enter the action menu located in the upper right corner of the page.

Showing the unique identifier.

The device identifier will then be displayed in numeric form and also as QR code.

Showing the unique identifier

After knowing the identifier of the device you want to add, please enter the menu Add a remote device.

Adding a remote device.

Immediately a window will be displayed, where you have to enter the unique identifier generated. It is also possible to assign a name to the connected device. Press save to set the changes.

Entering the data from the remote device.

Back to the previous screen, the folder remains unshared and the remote device is unused. This happens because Sycthing has to be restarted in order to sync correctly. The program should do it automatically, otherwise force the restart manually. With this intention, go back to the actions menu and click on restart.

Then go to the Sharing tab and check the box corresponding to Sharing Folders with the Device. Click on save to set the changes and restart the program.
