SteamCMD is a terminal interface tool that allows us to create dedicated Steam platform game servers. This way we can have an easy-to-use tool that allows us to personally manage some games. As an example, with SteamCMD we can create a CS:GO server, one of the most popular games nowadays.

It is worth noting that it works with games that use a SteamPipe content system. With this in mind, we can quickly understand the usefulness of the tool.

The installation is quite easy and quick to do so this is a short post.

Install SteamCMD on Ubuntu 20.04

First, open a terminal instance or connect via SSH. After that, you need to make sure your system is fully updated.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Next, switch to the root user of the system

sudo -i

And from there create a new Steam user.

adduser steam

The above command creates a new user named steam. You can rename it. There you will have to provide information about the user and assign a new password.

Next, you will need to install a package called lib32gcc1 which is a dependency of SteamCMD.

Fortunately, it is included in the official repositories, so to install it we just need to run it:

apt-get install lib32gcc1
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following additional packages will be installed:
  gcc-10-base lib32gcc-s1 libc6-i386 libgcc-s1 libstdc++6
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  lib32gcc-s1 lib32gcc1 libc6-i386

  gcc-10-base libgcc-s1 libstdc++6

Now, we need to log into the steam user and make it temporarily able to use bash.

su -ls /bin/bash steam

And from there with the help of the wget command download the tool.

Now decompress it

tar xvf steamcmd_linux.tar.gz

And then you just need to run the executable file

./steamcmd.sh +quit

After executing the command, the whole process of downloading the necessary packages and libraries will start.

When you get an output screen like the following then you know that SteamCMD has been successfully installed.

The only annoying thing using Steam is the downloading of a game. Sometimes, it may feel like DECADES passing away while the game only downloaded 5% of it! Here are a few tips & tricks to speed things up.

Don’t forget to back up your Steam games!

1. Check the internet connection

This is one of the main reasons why your download is going at a slow pace. If your connection is a good one but still facing performance issue, then try checking out the connection – the wiring, the ports etc.

If you’re using Wi-Fi or other wireless connection, make sure that the position of your PC and/or the modem is a proper place where it can get better signal coverage. In cases, restarting the device works like a charm. If the problem persists, then don’t forget to contact your network provider.

2. Clear Steam download cache

The download cache of the Steam client may become problematic time to time. If you’re facing network speed problem, try cleaning the cache.

For clearing the download cache, go to Steam client >> Settings.

From the left panel, select “Downloads”.

There, click the “CLEAR DOWNLOAD CACHE” button. Note that you’ll have to login into your Steam account again after clearing the cache.

3. Change server location

The location of the download server may also keep a dramatic effect on your download speed. For example, you’re living in Asia but your download server is North America, then due to the distance the data has to pass will drastically degrade the performance.

For changing the server location to your nearest, go to Steam client >> Settings >> “Downloads” from the left panel.

There, you’ll notice the available download regions. Select your nearest location for maximum performance.

We already discussed how to move a Steam game from one folder to another. Today, let’s take a look how to take backup of Steam games. The steps are same for both Windows and Linux.

The step-by-step guide

• Open Steam.
• Go to Library >> Games.

• You’ll see the list of all the installed games on the left panel. Select the games you want to make a backup.

• Right-click and select “Backup Game Files”.

• Click “Next”.

• Select the directory where you want to backup your game.

• Enter a backup file name. I recommend leaving the option of “File Size” to “CD [640 MB]”. It’s only a measure of splitting the compressed game archive.

Just wait until the game(s) are backed up.

Another awesome feature of Steam is, it allows moving a game from one place to another, even to another partition! It’s extremely useful for relieving the storage load on the “C” drive on Windows and root partition on Linux. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to move Steam games from one folder to another. The instructions are same on both Windows and Linux (except the file path structure).

Using the built-in function

Steam has a built-in function that allows you moving a game folder from one place to another. Here’s how to use it. But before using this method, make sure that you select a folder for a game library in a proper location.

• Open Steam.
• Go to Steam >> Settings.

• Select “Downloads” from the left panel.

• Click on “Steam Library Folders”.

Here, add the preferred library folder(s) where you wish to move your game. It can be on any drive. Just make sure that you have enough storage space on the drive. Here, I’ve added “E:\SteamLibrary”. Now, time to move the game.

• Go to Library >> Games.

• On the left panel, you’ll see the list of all the installed games. Right-click on any of the games >> select “Properties”.

• From the new dialog box, head to “LOCAL FILES” tab.

• Click on “MOVE INSTALLATION FOLDER”.
• Select the library folder and click “Move Folder”.

Depending on the game’s size, it’ll take quite some time. Be patient and don’t mess up anything or your game will become corrupted. I also recommend not running any heavy task during the transferring process.

Done! Your game is moved to the destination folder.

Using Steam Library Manager (Windows only)

There is another 3^rd-party tool to make the Steam game management even easier. Download Steam Library Manager. Then, run the program as administrator.

You can easily see the library folders on the left panel and games on the right section. You can simply drag-n-drop games from one folder to another.
