One advantage is that it does not require any additional configuration on the computer. In fact, just install it, and you are ready to use it. In addition, connections are encrypted with the AES-256 algorithm.

Another interesting feature of this application is that it is a cross-platform tool. Therefore, it has applications for Windows, GNU/Linux and macOS, as well as for Android or iOS. Consequently, it allows you to connect to remote computers and desktops, with the possibility of working with multiple screens and simultaneous connections. We can also transfer files and folders between the connected computers.

Ammyy Admin

This is a very light tool, with an installer that has a minimum weight of about 1 MB. In addition, it has a simple configuration process so that users without knowledge do not have problems when using it. It has paid versions and a free version, which can only be used for 15 hours per month with a single session.

It is also not a file sharing tool and does not have any of the advanced features that some others may offer. However, if you want a lightweight tool just for occasional use, then it’s for you. You will be able to control your computer remotely without much hassle.

AnyDesk

AnyDesk works very well and is also free. Moreover, it does not require advanced knowledge. It is only necessary to have a stable Wi-Fi connection and a device with the client installed. This can be another computer or even mobile phones with Android or iOS.

One of its coolest features is that its mobile version has a series of controls adapted with advanced options with certain finger movements. Additionally, it allows you to send files remotely. It also allows you to control your mobile from your computer, although in this case, it is a function that does not work limited to some devices.

VNC Connect

This tool is mainly paid, although it has free trials for all its modalities. It also includes a free Home version but with fewer options. However, on the downside, we can say that the registration page is perplexing. It actually tries to divert you to download its trial versions.

On the other hand, the application offers you the possibility to install it on any desktop operating system. Additionally, it can also be installed on mobile clients on Android and iOS. It is therefore a very flexible tool. Zoho Assist

Zoho Assist is a cloud-based remote access and support tool. They also have a processional approach. It allows you to support customers remotely and via the web. Like some previous options, you can use it to control PCs, laptops, mobile devices or servers in just a few seconds after the connection is established.

In this case, it is mainly a pay-as-you-go tool, with rates starting at $8 per month. The cheapest plan allows a range of two sessions, and as you pay more you can use it with more devices. It also has a free plan with access for one device, but with chat, desktop application, Mac support and clipboard sharing.

Windows

Together with TeamViewer, it is one of the most used options by all Windows users. Its main advantage is that it is already installed on the system. However, we will need to have the Windows 10 Pro version. However, we need the Windows 10 Pro version. Through its configuration menu, we will be able to enter from any Windows device. UltraVNC 

Another popular tool is Ultra VNC. Based on a free software client-server structure, it allows remote access to a computer and use it also from another device. Its drawback is that this protocol has been accused of not being very secure.

The xrdp package provides RDP functionality, along with a server capable of accepting connections from rdesktop and Windows Terminal Server clients. One of the main advantages of Xrdp is that all of its communications are encrypted by default,

On the other hand, we live in an age where there is a lot of homework and remote assistance is becoming more and more important. And unfortunately, many people still use Windows, and having Ubuntu 20.04 or Debian 10 compatible with Windows for remote assistance is something that can be useful.

Install Xrdp on Ubuntu 20.04 / Debian

For Ubuntu Only:

Fortunately, the package is available from the official Ubuntu repositories but in the multiverse section.

So, open the Ubuntu repository configuration file and make sure it’s enabled

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal main restricted universe multiverse

so that it will be enabled. Save the changes if you made them and refresh apt.

sudo apt update

Ubuntu / Debian

And after that, you will be able to install Xrdp without any problems.

sudo apt install xrdp

At the end of the installation, a system service will be added that you can manage with the command systemctl.

Check the status of the service by running:

sudo systemctl status xrdp

And check that everything is OK

Configuring Xrdp on Ubuntu 20.04 / Debian 10

To increase security Xrdp requires that we create a new system user dedicated to the program.

sudo useadd xrdpuser -G sudo

And then assign a password to it:

sudo passwd xrdpuser

The application runs on port 3389 which you have to make sure to open in the Firewall.

Now you have to make some configurations in Xrdp for it, edit it.

sudo nano /etc/xrdp/xrdp.ini

And add these changes

max_bpp=128
crypt_level=low
xserverbpp=128

At the end add this one:

use_compression=yes

Save the changes, close the editor and restart the service.

sudo systemctl restart xrdp

Now any computer can remotely access your computer.

Enabling Telnet on Windows Server 2016/2019. Using PowerShell

To be able to use Telnet correctly we have to open a session in the destination machine. This session has to be opened with a user with access. As mentioned above, this protocol presents an important security gap. For this reason, it is disabled by default in Windows Server. It is possible to check this by running the telnet command at a command prompt:

To enable it, please open a PowerShell with administrative privileges and add the following command and press Enter:

 Install-WindowsFeature -name Telnet-Client 

Immediately start the installation:

At the end of the process we will see the following window:

Another way to enable this function is to open a CMD with administrative privileges and run the following command:

dism /online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:TelnetClient

It is also possible to enable Telnet from the Windows Server 2016/2019 Dashboard. With this in mind, you have to enter the section Add roles and features.

Then press Next to continue.

In the next window, click on Role-based or feature-based installation:

Next, select the server you are going to add to Telnet.

Now, just press Next and skip the roles on this screen. Press Next to continue the installation.

Then scroll down and select the Telnet checkbox. You will see a brief description of the feature.

On the next screen, press Install to start the process.

Just wait a few seconds until Telnet is finally installed.

Testing Telnet.

After the process is finished, you just need to open any CMD and run the next command:

telnet

If everything is correct, you will see the next window:

To view the available subcommands, run the following command:

telnet /h

There is a free (Non-supporter) and a paid (Supporter) version. The main limitations of the free version are the following: For 50 minutes, it is limited to two clients per session and the operating system menu is reduced to 7. But it is perfect for home use. Let us go for it!

1. We will need an original DVD of Windows 10 or an ISO.
2. Router
3. Computer with Windows installed with user name and password: Serva is a Windows application and needs to be installed on a PC with it (it will work as a server).
4. Download the free version (non-supporter).
5. Unzip in a folder called “Serva”.

NOTE: No installation is necessary because it is portable. For ease of use, I recommend unzipping at the root of the hard drive.

Then, create inside an empty folder (for example OS) where the decompressed images of the operating systems will be located:

 C:\Serva\OS\

Running the EXE file

Run “Serva64.exe” (or Serva32.exe) depending on the version of our Windows. The free version will ask you to wait for 7 seconds before you can use it. Once the wait is over, click “Thanks, not today” and configure as follows (if a Windows Firewall warning appears, give access to the application).

In the first place, we have to select “settings”.

Then, click on the TFTP tab. Next click on TFTP server option. After that, select TFTP server root directory and browse through the file directory to where the folder you previously created is located.

Finally, select the DHCP tab, then select the proxyDHCP and BINL options.

After that, close and restart the program (as administrator). At this point, several subfolders will be created within the root folder “OS”:

NWA_PXE: Here we will put different Windows distributions (Linux, etc).

WIA_RIS: Previous Windows insight (XP, Server 2008 non-R2).

The previous folders do not interest us.

WIA_WDS: From the view on (View, W7, W8, W10). This is the one!

The “WIA_WDS” folder must be configured as shared and with the name of the shared resource “WIA_WDS_SHARE”

Create a folder inside “WIA_WDS” with the name of the operating system. Then extract the content of the ISO and paste it into the folder. For example C:\Serva\WIA_WDS\Windows10\ Then we close the program and restart it as an administrator.

At the destination computer

Go to the computer where you want to install Windows and enter the BIOS. Make sure that the network boot is enabled. This setting can be called “Boot from the network” or “Boot from PXE”.

Then start the computer and press the key to display the start menu. On most computers, press F12, F8 or del button depending on the BIOS version. Select Network or PXE (again, this depends on the computer BIOS), to boot from the network, using Serva

If all goes well, you should see a screen similar to the one below that shows the computer’s MAC and network card requests to an IP address via DHCP.  The installation files are loaded and a small window called ServaPENet is displayed. In this step, Serva installs the network driver, loads the network resources and connects to the Windows installation folder. Type in the user account of the server pc and accept.

Then continue with the installation of Windows, as usual. As you can see, the entire proccess is a little bit complex, but by following these steps, we can make it.
