Throughout the Linux community, there are always expectations about when Ubuntu decides to have a Rolling Release. This, at least, since the developers have not been considered but now it is possible to have an Ubuntu Rolling Release and all thanks to a script called Rolling Rhino.

Rolling Release distributions like Arch Linux, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, or KaOS have a great advantage that no re-installations are required. That is to say, it is updated continuously and many applications are arriving there in their latest versions. This includes entire desktop environments as well as desktop applications or libraries.

As we well know Ubuntu does not follow this development scheme. Rather, it is a static version that has specific support. At first, there are no problems, but after a while, some packages may become obsolete. However, it must also be said that Ubuntu is much more stable than some Rolling Release distributions because of the same development approach.

Despite this, there has always been a desire from some part of the community to have Ubuntu released as a Rolling Release. Something like OpenSUSE that has a Rolling Release called Tumbleweed and another more stable and static version like LEAP.

Well, thanks to Rolling Rhino we will be able to make Ubuntu a Rolling Release.

Rolling Rhino is a script from a Daily Build image of Ubuntu or any of its flavors makes a follow up of all the development of the distribution. This makes Ubuntu constantly updated and a Rolling Release.

The only problem is that we will be in the development branch of Ubuntu. And this could lead to stability issues. So we do not recommend its use in production environments. It should be used for testing purposes.

How to convert Ubuntu to Rolling Release?

To achieve this with the help of Rolling Rhino, you must first be using a Daily Build image of Ubuntu or some of its flavors. It is also advisable not to have any PPA added.

Ubuntu Desktop Daily Build

Kubuntu Daily Build

Lubuntu Daily Build

Ubuntu Budgie Daily Build

Ubuntu MATE Daily Build

Kubuntu Daily Build

Ubuntu Studio Daily Build

Xubuntu Daily Build

Ubuntu Kylin Daily Build

Then, clone the Rolling Rhino repository.

:~$ git clone https://github.com/wimpysworld/rolling-rhino.git

Then access the folder that has been created.

:~$ cd rolling-rhino

And from there run the script as root user.

:~$ sudo ./rolling-rhino

If all goes well, you should see a screen output like this.

Rolling Rhino ?
 [+] INFO: lsb_release detected.
 [+] INFO: Ubuntu detected.
[+] INFO: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS detected.
 [+] INFO: Detected ubuntu-desktop.
[+] INFO: No PPAs detected, this is good."
 [+] INFO: All checks passed.
Are you sure want to start tracking the devel series? [Y/N]

Confirm the operation and in the end, you’ll see the Rolling Rhino logo. This will indicate that all changes have been successfully applied.

So, congratulations.

Conclusion

Seeing an Ubuntu Rolling Release is something the community has been dreaming about for several years. However, even though it’s not an official way to do it, Rolling Rhino helps us to have another experience with Ubuntu. It’s interesting.

After several months of development, the OpenSUSE community team announced a new version. I am talking about version 15.1 based on SUSE Linux Enterprise SP1. We are in the presence of an important release within Linux as OpenSUSE is cataloged as an important distribution for its use and contributions to the community. In this post, we will tell you more about it, but the important thing is that OpenSUSE 15.1 is available.

Continuity and stability on OpenSUSE 15.1

This release has numerous improvements, however, it has tried not to be aggressive with the updates. All this with the main goal of providing even more stability to the distribution. Therefore, we can say that is based on SUSE Linux Enterprise stability is practically guaranteed.

“With Leap 15, we have introduced a huge number of new features and innovations in security, performance, and tool/desktop area. Having in mind how stable, efficient and reliable Leap has become, with this release, we managed to keep the level of quality to the point that our private and Small Business users can..” These are some of the words of Haris Sehic, a member of the openSUSE community.

What is the new on this version?

As I mentioned earlier, the main novelties are in security and stability. However, it is good to note that all the graphics stack of the distribution has been updated. For example, all the graphical novelties of the 4.19 kernel have been ported to the 4.12 kernel currently used by OpenSUSE. This is incredible because it is not necessary to update the kernel to have a great support of AMD vega cards.

On the other hand, Network Manager now manages the distribution connections by default. Making it even easier for users coming from other distributions.

Professional technologies in a community version

OpenSUSE 15.1 stands out for being a community Linux distribution but it seems very professional. In this new version, highlights the appearance of the tools Podman and Buildah that are used by OpenSUSE kubic. All this as alternatives to Docker.

In addition, it has improved and updated the main services like FTP, SSH, SAMBA and others that will allow making a home or professional server in a very safe way. In the same way, Kopano and Nextcloud are now part of the distribution repositories.

Containers are an important thing on OpenSUSE 15.1

Additionally, OpenSUSE 15.1 makes it easier to migrate to SUSE Linux Enterprise as they share the entire core of applications.

In desktop environments, they have been a bit conservative and keep GNOME 3.26 and Plasma 5.12 as they have been tested as stable.

Now, all that’s left is for you to download it and try it. Then, comment on this post to know your opinion about this release.
