<p>Hello! Diskpart is an internal tool included in Windows <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">systems</a> that allows you to manage storage units. Indeed, it is possible to manage internal and external drives, disks, partitions and virtual hard disks. Read on to learn that Diskpart is a very useful tool for managing storage in Windows 10.</p>

<h2>Short view at Diskpart.</h2>

<p>In the course of working with Windows, you have surely experienced problems with storage drives. For example, sometimes USB drives have lost their file system. Consequently, it is impossible to format it with the classic system methods. Similarly, several self-assembled hard drives can cause boot errors. It is also possible that the disks are assigned the wrong letter. However, many other problems can arise with storage units. Nevertheless, the vast majority of them can be solved by Diskpart.</p>

<h2>Accessing Diskpart</h2>

<p>The only requirement to run this tool is that the user is in the local administrators group. Or in the same way that he has equivalent permissions. From then on, you just need to press the Win+R combination to invoke run box. Once there, type the following:</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">diskpart</pre>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="399" height="206" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk.png" alt="Running the diskpart command" class="wp-image-26014" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk.png 399w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk-300x155.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px" /><figcaption>Running the diskpart command</figcaption></figure>

<p>Another way to access is through the search bar. With this in mind press the Win+Q combination. Now type <em>diskpart</em></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="788" height="680" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk2.png" alt="Launching diskpart from the search bar " class="wp-image-26018" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk2.png 788w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk2-300x259.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk2-768x663.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk2-696x601.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 788px) 100vw, 788px" /><figcaption>Launching diskpart from the search bar</figcaption></figure>

<p>Obviously, if you are already running a CMD, just run the diskpart command to launch the tool.</p>

<h2>Diskpart is a simple but very powerful tool.</h2>

<p>After doing some above steps a system symbol is displayed with Diskpart running. Please do not be fooled by the apparent simplicity, as it offers many possibilities and options.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="979" height="512" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk3.png" alt="Diskpart running on Windows 10" class="wp-image-26022" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk3.png 979w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk3-300x157.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk3-768x402.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk3-696x364.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 979px) 100vw, 979px" /><figcaption>Diskpart running on Windows 10</figcaption></figure>

<p>In fact, there are almost 40 commands available to use. I show you the most useful ones below:</p>

<ul><li>Disk or help: shows the diskpart commands to use and a brief description</li><li>List disk: shows all the discs of the computer.</li><li>List vdisk: Displays the virtual disks, if any.</li><li>Select: moves the focus to a disk, volume or partition. This is a mandatory command to work with each element.</li><li>List volume: It provides a list of the volumes present.</li><li>Assign: assigns a unit letter or a mount point to the selected volume.</li><li>List partition: As its name indicates, it shows the partitions of the disks.</li><li>Clean:removes all partition or volume formatting from the selected disk.</li><li>Create: creates a partition, a volume or a virtual disk.</li><li>Extend: extends the selected volume or partition to a free and unassigned space.</li><li>Shrink: reduces the size of the selected volume by the specified amount.</li><li>Format: formats a disk on the supported file systems in Windows</li></ul>

<h2>Practical use of Diskpart.</h2>

<p>As mentioned, sometimes USB devices are problematic. That is, it is impossible to access them graphically. Consequently, it is impossible to format them in the traditional way. But don&#8217;t worry, we will show you how to do it with Diskpart without resorting to third party solutions. Please follow these steps:</p>

<ul><li>Run Diskpart.</li><li>Type <em>list disk</em> to see the drive with problems. For the example the number 3.</li><li>Select the drive with<em> select disk 3</em>.</li><li>Type the <em>clean </em>command to clean the drive.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="979" height="512" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk4.png" alt="Cleaning a USB drive with diskpart" class="wp-image-26029" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk4.png 979w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk4-300x157.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk4-768x402.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk4-696x364.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 979px) 100vw, 979px" /><figcaption>Cleaning a USB drive with diskpart</figcaption></figure>

<p>This way, the unit will be available and ready to be formatted with the system you want.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="819" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk5-1024x819.png" alt="" class="wp-image-26032" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk5-1024x819.png 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk5-300x240.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk5-768x614.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk5-696x557.png 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk5-1068x854.png 1068w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/disk5.png 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Ultimately, we have met Diskpart, a very useful tool for managing partitions in Windows 10. From now on you can count on this app to work more comfortably with Windows storage. On the other hand, the use of this tool can be complemented with <a href="https://www.osradar.com/how-to-use-chkdsk-in-windows-10/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CHKDSK.</a> Bye!</p>

<p>Hi! USB sticks are undoubtedly very functional elements for working in Windows 10. Indeed, their use ranges from file management to creating boot media. However, at some point, it is likely that the USB media will have errors. Most likely the damage is at the hardware level or at a logical level. In the first case, you will most likely have to discard it. However, errors on a logical level imply damage to the sectors of the USB stick. In this case, Windows has the option to try to recover the correct functioning of the USB. In this way, we can recover the hosted information. Well, come along to see how to repair a USB drive in Windows 10.</p>

<h2>How to fix a USB drive using the graphical method</h2>

<p>For this method, we will use the context menu of the USB drive. The first thing you have to do is open the file browser by pressing the Win+E combination. Then right-click on the USB drive and select <strong>Properties.</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="788" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb-1024x788.png" alt="Enter the properties of the USB drive" class="wp-image-22484" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb-1024x788.png 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb-300x231.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb-768x591.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb-696x536.png 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb-1068x822.png 1068w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb.png 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Enter the properties of the USB drive</figcaption></figure>

<p>A window will immediately pop up. Once there, please select the <strong>Tools</strong> tab. Then click on <strong>Check.</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="363" height="499" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb2.png" alt="Please click on Check. " class="wp-image-22486" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb2.png 363w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb2-218x300.png 218w" sizes="(max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px" /><figcaption>Please click on Check.</figcaption></figure>

<p>In the next window, just click on <strong>Scan and repair drive.</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="542" height="231" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb3.png" alt="Start scanning the USB drive" class="wp-image-22489" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb3.png 542w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb3-300x128.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px" /><figcaption>Start scanning the USB drive</figcaption></figure>

<p>This will begin to scan the unit and repair any errors it may contain. After a few moments, the process will have been successfully completed.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="352" height="199" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb4.png" alt="" class="wp-image-22491" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb4.png 352w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb4-300x170.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px" /></figure>

<h2>How to rfix a USB drive using the CMD in Windows 10</h2>

<p>We&#8217;ve talked about Command Prompt before. In effect, this console allows you to manage various administrative tasks. In addition, it also performs support tasks at the application and hardware level. For this particular case, we will use the <em>chkdsk </em>tool. Through it, Check Disk is invoked which checks the file system and the metadata of a volume. Consequently, it looks for logical and physical errors in the drive. This time we will use the tool together with the /f /r parameters. This way it is possible to detect the damage and try to repair it. The syntax is as follows:</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">chkdsk /f /R Unit:</pre>

<p>Please remember to write the letter assigned to the unit. It then opens a CMD with administrative privileges. With this intention, please type CMD in the search bar.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="792" height="638" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb5.png" alt="Runs a CMD with administrative privileges" class="wp-image-22492" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb5.png 792w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb5-300x242.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb5-768x619.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb5-696x561.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px" /><figcaption>Runs a CMD with administrative privileges</figcaption></figure>

<p>After entering the command, the examination of the unit will begin. The duration of the scan will depend on your system and the size of the USB drive.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="787" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb6-1024x787.png" alt="CHKDSK running the analysis of the USB drive." class="wp-image-22493" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb6-1024x787.png 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb6-300x231.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb6-768x590.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb6-696x535.png 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb6-1068x821.png 1068w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb6-80x60.png 80w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/usb6.png 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>CHKDSK running the analysis of the USB drive.</figcaption></figure>

<p>At the end of the day, we have seen how to repair a USB drive in <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10" target="_blank" aria-label="undefined (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener">Windows 10</a>. Please note that these tools will work if there is logical damage to the drive. But, most likely they will work and you will be able to retrieve information from the drive. All right, that&#8217;s it for today. Before I say goodbye I invite you to see our post about the <a href="https://www.osradar.com/how-to-open-windows-10-mobility-center/" target="_blank" aria-label="undefined (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mobility Center</a> on Windows 10.
