<p>Hi! Boot Configuration Data (BCD) is a set of data where the system boot information is stored. In addition, from there the operating systems stored in the computer are managed. Similarly, this is a new function that allows systems not managed by <a href="https://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/BIOS-basic-input-output-system" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BIOS</a> to boot properly. Well, today we will see how to backup and restore BCD in Windows 10.</p>

<h2>How to create a BCD backup.</h2>

<p>All BCD files are stored in the Boot folder. It is possible to manage them for administration purposes. In addition, they are encrypted to prevent unauthorized changes. Consequently, this action can cause negative effects on Windows startup. On the other hand, Windows has a tool called <em>bcedit</em>. This allows you to create a backup of your boot configuration and restore it when necessary. In addition, BCD boot configuration data is stored in a data file in the Windows registry. Its path is as follows:</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\BCD00000</pre>

<p>In the case of UEFI boot, this file will be in /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/BCD on the EFI system partition. Well, now we will use CMD to create a backup of BCD. The first thing you have to do is open a command prompt as an administrator:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="787" height="681" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd.png" alt="Launching a CMD as an administrator" class="wp-image-26073" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd.png 787w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd-300x260.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd-768x665.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd-696x602.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 787px) 100vw, 787px" /><figcaption>Launching a CMD as an administrator</figcaption></figure>

<p>Then run the <em>bcdedit</em> command to see the current file structure.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="787" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd2-1024x787.png" alt="Checking the BCD structure." class="wp-image-26075" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd2-1024x787.png 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd2-300x231.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd2-768x590.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd2-696x535.png 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd2-1068x821.png 1068w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd2.png 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Checking the BCD structure.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Now we are going to export the contents of this folder to a path. For security reasons, it is convenient to use a different disk or partition than where Windows is installed. So first, please create the folder in the location of your choice.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="787" src="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd3-1024x787.png" alt="Creating the folder to save the BCD backup." class="wp-image-26095" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd3-1024x787.png 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd3-300x231.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd3-768x590.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd3-696x535.png 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd3-1068x821.png 1068w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd3.png 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Creating the folder to save the BCD backup.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Then, please use the following syntax:</p>

<p>bcdedit /export &#8220;path bcd.bcd&#8221;</p>

<p>Please remember to replace <em>path</em> with the address of the folder you will be backing up. In my case, the command looks like this:</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">bcdedit /export "E:\BCD\bcd.bcd"</pre>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="979" height="512" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd4.png" alt="" class="wp-image-26101" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd4.png 979w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd4-300x157.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd4-768x402.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd4-696x364.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 979px) 100vw, 979px" /></figure>

<p>You can verify the operation by going to the path:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="801" height="248" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd5.png" alt="BCD backup effectively created. " class="wp-image-26102" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd5.png 801w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd5-300x93.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd5-768x238.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd5-696x215.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 801px) 100vw, 801px" /><figcaption>BCD backup effectively created.</figcaption></figure>

<h2>How to restore a BCD backup in Windows 10</h2>

<p>The procedure for restoring a BCD backup is quite simple. Just run the following syntax from a CMD with administrator privileges:</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">bcdedit /import “path”</pre>

<p>In my case:</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">bcdedit /import "E:\BCD\bcd.bcd"</pre>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="979" height="512" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd6.png" alt="" class="wp-image-26104" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd6.png 979w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd6-300x157.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd6-768x402.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/bcd6-696x364.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 979px) 100vw, 979px" /></figure>

<p>In this way we have seen how to backup and restore BCD in Windows 10. So if there is a problem with the system <a href="https://www.osradar.com/how-to-make-windows-10-boot-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">startup, </a>we can resort to this backup. Okay, that&#8217;s it for now. See you later!</p>

<p>Hi, how are you? One of the worst scenarios when using the computer is that it does not start. Indeed, it can be disappointing to turn on the computer and have it simply not start. This inconvenience can have many causes. However, one of the most common errors is damage to the Boot Configuration Data or BCD. Additionally, there are several factors that can damage the BCD boot file. For example, when the system does not shut down properly, either due to a power failure or a serious system error. Similarly, a hard disk failure or a virus can also damage the BCD. It is also possible that a defective hardware component may prevent the system from booting properly. In that case, you have to replace it with a new one. Anyway, we&#8217;ll see how to back up Boot Configuration Data in Windows 10.</p>

<h2>How to create a BCD backup in Windows 10</h2>

<p>A very simple way to create a BCD backup is by using Command Prompt. With this in mind, type CMD into the search bar and then launch it with administrator privileges</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="898" src="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd-1-1024x898.png" alt="Launch a CMD with administrator privileges" class="wp-image-21321" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd-1-1024x898.png 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd-1-300x263.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd-1-768x673.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd-1-696x610.png 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd-1-1068x936.png 1068w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd-1.png 1176w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Launch a CMD with administrator privileges</figcaption></figure>

<p>Then execute the following command:</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">bcdedit /export <em>E</em>:<em>backup</em>.bcd</pre>

<p>Please remember to replace the letter<em> E </em>with the letter of the unit where the backup will be stored. Also, replace <em>backup </em>with the name you want to assign to the file. Additionally, remember to save the file on a secure drive that you can access in case of a system error.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="582" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd2-1024x582.png" alt="" class="wp-image-21322" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd2-1024x582.png 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd2-300x170.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd2-768x436.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd2-696x396.png 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd2-1068x607.png 1068w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd2.png 1348w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>After pressing Enter, a copy of the BCD will be saved in the selected unit. This way, you can restore it in case of system error.</p>

<h2>How to back up BCD using third-party tools</h2>

<p>If you don&#8217;t feel comfortable using the command line, then you can resort to third party programs. In this case, we will use <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/" target="_blank">EasyBCD</a>. This free program allows you to manage the bootloader of your computer. But it is also possible to make backup copies of the BCD. Once downloaded and installed, just click on BCD Backup/Repair. Additionally, the menu is very intuitive since it allows you to manage the backup destination and the file name. On the other hand, the tool also provides the function to restore BCD backups.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="853" height="723" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd3.png" alt="Using Easy BCD to Back Up Boot Configuration Data" class="wp-image-21323" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd3.png 853w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd3-300x254.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd3-768x651.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd3-696x590.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 853px) 100vw, 853px" /><figcaption>Using Easy BCD to Back Up Boot Configuration Data</figcaption></figure>

<h2>How to repair the BCD if I don&#8217;t have a backup</h2>

<p>Imagine this scenario: You turn on the computer and the system won&#8217;t start. Most likely you have a bad BCD. And if you don&#8217;t have a backup, the situation is worse. In that case, just use the tools provided by Windows to repair the corrupted boot file. As a requirement, you must start the system with the Windows 10 boot disk. But instead of installing the system, click on <em>Repair your computer.</em></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="800" height="598" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd4.png" alt="Click on Repair your computer" class="wp-image-21325" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd4.png 800w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd4-300x224.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd4-768x574.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd4-696x520.png 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd4-80x60.png 80w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd4-265x198.png 265w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>Click on Repair your computer</figcaption></figure>

<p>Then select <em>Troubleshoot</em></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="800" height="598" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd5.png" alt="" class="wp-image-21327" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd5.png 800w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd5-300x224.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd5-768x574.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd5-696x520.png 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd5-80x60.png 80w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd5-265x198.png 265w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure>

<p>Now click on <em>Command Prompt.</em></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="635" height="475" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd6.png" alt="" class="wp-image-21328" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd6.png 635w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd6-300x224.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd6-80x60.png 80w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/bcd6-265x198.png 265w" sizes="(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px" /></figure>

<p>Once inside the CMD, you must execute the following commands:</p>

<p><strong>bootrec /fixmbr</strong>: Writes a new MBR</p>

<p><strong>bootrec /fixboot</strong>: Writes a new boot sector to the system partition, fixing possible damaged sectors</p>

<p><strong>bootrec /rebuildbcd</strong>: Scans all hard drives connected to the computer. Also, if it detects Windows installations on any of them, it adds it to the BCD.</p>

<p>Finally, exit the CMD and reboot the computer. If everything has gone well, then the system will boot normally as the BCD will be restored.</p>

<h2>Conclusion</h2>

<p>Finally, we have seen how to make a Boot Configuration Data back up in Windows 10. Also, I showed you how to do it with the command line and also with a third party tool. Finally, we detail the method to repair the Windows boot. All right, so far the tutorial.
