Hello! Without a doubt, the start menu is a fundamental part of Windows 10. In fact, it is practically the first stop when you turn on the system. For that reason, today we will solve what can be a serious problem. Specifically, the Windows 10 start menu is not working. This element has been an elementary part of Windows. However, let’s remember that Windows 8 was removed in its traditional form. Since the system was oriented to touch screens. This situation was criticized by many users. So much so, that the start menu partially returned in Windows 8.1. However, the start menu with its classic look is back in Windows 10. It is well known that this system maintains a policy of security updates. We have even shown you how to clean and organize it. But sometimes, this menu can fail. Which is often very cumbersome.

How to repair the windows start menu with Regedit.

Windows do not have a specific tool to repair the startup menu. It is certainly a shortcoming of the system. And it is very likely to be added in the future. Therefore, as a first alternative, we will resort to the registry editor. As always, we recommend backing up the registry before proceeding. So the first thing you have to do is to press the Win+R combination to go to the run box. Once there, please run the regedit command.

Opening the registry editor.

Then, go to the following path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CloudStore\Store\Cache\DefaultAccount

Next, right-click on Default Account and then select Delete. This action will delete all the configuration cache from the start menu. Consequently, you will be back to factory defaults.

Restart the file explorer.

Occasionally, problems with the file explorer can also damage the startup menu. So what we will do is restart it. To do this, it is necessary to open the task manager. With this in mind, press the combination Control+Shift+Esc. Please click on the Processes tab. Next, select File Explorer with the right mouse button. Finally, select Restart.

Restarting the file explorer.

Please wait a moment while the file explorer restarts. Then check to see if the problem has been resolved.

Restart Cortana

Some users have reported that Cortana has caused problems with the start menu. So another solution is to restart Cortana. This action can be done from the PowerShell. However, we must launch it with administrator privileges. With this in mind press the Win+X combination and select the corresponding option.

Launching a PowerShell with administrator privileges.

Next, please run the following command:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

Please note that this command takes several minutes to execute. Then restart the computer and check that the problem is fixed.

Repair Windows 10 start menu with SFC

Sometimes the problem with the Start menu implies damage to the Windows system. Therefore, it is necessary to repair the file system. With this in mind, we will use the SFC and DISM commands. Please check our post to learn how to use these commands. Anyway, we have seen how to solve this problem: The Windows start menu is not working. You can also try rebooting the system or logging out. You can also disable the antivirus. See you soon!

It is well known that Sun Valley is the next major update to Windows 10. In fact, it is likely to be the most important update that the operating system will undergo since its launch in 2015. Therefore, a drastic renovation of the system’s native applications and interface elements are expected. For example, the taskbar, the Action Center, and the Start Menu. In addition, this update will include new features such as a news and interests widget in the taskbar. But perhaps one of the most awaited changes is the one related to the start menu. So get ready, as the next major Windows update will include a completely revamped start menu.

A revamped Start menu marks the beginning of the Windows 10 Sun Valley era.

Recently, Zac Bowden, who is a member of Windows Central, reported that the start menu would be revamped with Sun Valley. He has even presented a mockup where the possible changes can be seen. For example, the menu with rounded corners and in floating form. Next, we will see the mockup:

Image credits: Zac Bowden and Windows Central

However, it seems that the Redmond company wants to deepen the renovation. And apparently there will be another version of the completely renewed start menu. Which would be of alternative use to the one shown in the mockup. Therefore the user could choose between the two options:

Hearing that MS is working on a new Start menu layout for Sun Valley that's different from the rounded Start/Tile interface we've seen so far. Users will be able to switch between the classic and new layout via a toggle in Settings.
— Zac Bowden (@zacbowden) February 23, 2021

Bowden claims that this new mode would not have a hamburger menu. instead, our profile picture, power controls, and File Explorer shortcuts would be distributed at the bottom of the menu. Additionally, an all apps button would be included in the upper right corner. We should be patient until these new features are shown in the insider channel. In the meantime, we can enjoy this recreation elaborated by the Twiter user @vastglad.

<img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="1024" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/st2-1024x1024.jpg" alt="Mockup of the totally renewed Windows 10 Sun Valley start menu.
Finally, we have seen how Windows 10 Sun Valley could include a completely revamped Start Menu. We will surely see more news as the days go by. There is no doubt that the changes in the operating system will be significant. See you soon!

Today we are going to see how to edit the folders and applications in the Windows 10 Start menu list, so it is possible to sort it according to the user’s taste. Indeed, each newly installed program behaves differently. In fact, some create folders in the Start menu and others create shortcuts. It is therefore convenient to organize it. It is well known that Windows 10 has a Start menu customization section. However, it is not possible to edit the contents of the list. In order to organize these items, it is necessary to resort to the file explorer. Read on to find out how to do it.

How to edit the Start menu folders.

This is a simple procedure. Just open the Windows file explorer. With this in mind, you can click on the icon in the taskbar. Or press the Win+E combination.

Entering the Windows file explorer.

Next, it is necessary to go to a specific address. For this you need to do two steps. First, you must click on the address bar. This action causes the full address of the location to be displayed.

Clicking on the address bar.

Next, enter the following address in the search bar:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Next, press Enter to go to the selected selection. You will immediately access the list of folders and shortcuts in the start menu. As you can see, the items are displayed as they are in the Start menu. In addition, the system sorts them alphabetically. However, you can edit it to create or delete folders.

List of folders and shortcuts in the Windows 10 start menu.

Obviously, the only thing left to do is to organize it to your liking. That is to say, inside the folders there are the shortcuts. Then, it is possible to cut and paste them outside the folder. By doing so, you delete the folder and only the shortcut of the application will remain in the Start menu list. In the same way, it is possible to do the process the other way around. To organize all items in folders. Very well, in this way it is possible to edit Windows 10 Start menu folders and applications. This will give you another way to customize the system. See you later!
