Hello! Deleting files by accident is one of the biggest fears of users. Indeed, unintentionally deleting documents, music or photos can be catastrophic. When this happens, we often turn to specialized software. There are also options for you to pay for it. However, honestly, paid apps usually work better. That’s why this news can be surprising. Microsoft is offering its own app to recover deleted files. In fact, it can be downloaded from the Microsoft store. Without further ado, let’s see how to recover deleted files with Windows File Recovery.

Microsoft brings us its own tool to recover deleted files.

In a move of the market, Microsoft launches its own tool to recover files. And best of all, it’s totally free. In fact, as we mentioned, it can be downloaded from this link in Microsoft Store. However, not everything is so good. Since the tool has no graphical user interface. That is, it is handled through Command Prompt. This is something that might scare some users who are not used to managing commands in the console. Consequently, this app is recommended for medium to advanced users. On the other hand, it is a fundamental requirement to have the 2004 update of Windows 10. Once it’s unloaded, all you have to do is launch it.

Windows File Recovery running on Windows 10.

According to Microsoft, the app has 3 modes:

Default: is the recommended mode to use for recently deleted files on NTFS file system discs

Segment: This mode is recommended in NTFS for recovering files that were deleted some time ago. Either after formatting or with a corrupted disk, and it does not require MFT. Microsoft recommends trying Segment first, then Signature.

Signature: For FAT, exFAT, or ReFS file systems, Microsoft recommends Signature mode, which requires data to be present on the disk. Additionally, it can be used on an external drive, such as a hard disk or flash drive.

How to use Windows File Recovery.

From Command Prompt, always use the winfr command. In addition, we must include the search unit and the destination unit. In addition to specifying the type of search. For example, if we want to recover in Default mode a specific file from C: and have it copied to a folder on disk E. Then execute the following command:

winfr C: E: /n \Users\roger\Documents\osradar.docx

Where roger is the user folder and osradar.docx is the searched file. If you want to search in C: by file type (PNG and JPEG in this case) in Default mode, and you want to paste in E:, you have to execute this in the command line:

winfr C: E: /n \Users\roger\Pictures*.JPEG /n \Users\roger\Pictures*.PNG

To search in C: PDF and Word files in Segment mode, and copy them to E, enter (/r) in the action, execute this:

winfr C: E: /r /n *.pdf /n *.docx

With the Signature mode, it would be similar, using (/x) in the syntax:

winfr C: E: /x /y:JPEG,PNG

In general, these are the most used commands. Now if you want to learn more about this app, please check their support website. Finally, we have seen how to recover deleted files with Windows Recovery Files. What do you think about the app? Would you use it? Let us know your opinion in the comments.
