Having security software installed is essential to avoid attacks when surfing the net. Certainly, there are many options. However, Windows Defender is the most popular option among Windows users. It is already integrated, works very well and also offers the possibility to configure it quite a lot. In this post, we will explain how to add exceptions to Windows Defender.

Why add exceptions to Windows Defender

Microsoft has improved the Windows Defender interface lately. Indeed, it has made more visible options, and we can modify some aspects. With this, it pursues to increase the security of the user. However, sometimes it is necessary to add exceptions to bypass some file or application. Basically, it is when the antivirus alerts that there is a virus or some security problem, but in reality this is not the case. The user trusts the file or application. However, Windows Defender detects it as a threat.

This is something that can happen with any antivirus. Logically, it also happens with Windows Defender. For example, when trying to download a file from Chrome or Edge, it may block it and warn us that it is potentially dangerous. We are clear that the action is not a threat; however, we cannot open it or install it.

There are a couple of options for opening these types of files. One of them is to disable the antivirus. Obviously, this is not the most advisable thing to do, as it may allow a real threat to enter. The other option is to create an exception in Windows Defender to ignore a file or folder. See how to add exceptions to Windows Defender

Steps to create an exception in Windows 10

First, we are going to explain how we can create this exception in Windows 10. With this in mind, we need to go to Windows Settings. With this intention, press the Win+I combination. Once there, click on Update & Security.

Windows Settings>Update & Security.

In the window that appears, click on Windows Security. Next, select Virus & Threat Protection.

Entering the antivirus configuration

Again, a floating window will appear. Consequently, go to the Virus Protection & Threats section. Then click on Manage Settings.

Manage Settings.

As you can see, several options are displayed. However, the one that interests us is the one related to exclusions. Therefore, click on Add or remove exclusions.

Managing Windows Defender exceptions

There we will have to choose if we want to apply this exception to a specific file or to a whole folder. The latter is useful if we have several saved files and we do not want the antivirus to block it. We can also apply a rule for a system process, as this could also be blocked by the antivirus.

Selecting the type of exclusion for Windows Defender

From here, you only have to select which type of exception you want. From now on, Windows Defender will start ignoring the threats that may be in that rule. However, you have to be very cautious about what you are adding. For example, it would be a mistake to add the downloads folder or the C drive to the exceptions. There we could have files that are actually a virus.

How to avoid false positives in Windows 11

We have previously told you about Windows 11. This is the most recent operating system implemented by Microsoft. Well, we will also be able to configure exceptions so that it does not detect false threats and we have problems to download a file or install any program. Windows Defender also works very well there. It continues being a fundamental tool for the security, although sometimes false positives appear.

Let’s see how to get rid of this problem. The first thing you have to do is to go to Windows Settings. With this intention, press the Win+I combination. Once there, click on Privacy & Security. Now in the menu on the right, click on Windows Security.

Entering the Windows 11 security settings

We will be faced with several elements related to Windows security. Some of them are the firewall, the account protection among others. However, just click on Virus and Threat Protection.

Next, the options for virus and threat protection are displayed. As you can see, several options appear. However, the one we are interested in is the one related to Virus and threat protection settings. Click on Manage settings, which appears below.

Again, we will see different options related to antivirus protection. This screen is very similar to the one we saw in Windows 10. Well, just scroll down until you get to the Exclusions section. Specifically, click on Add or remove exclusions.

Managing Windows Defender exclusions in Windows 11

Managing exclusions

However, the security control has been increased regarding Windows 10. In fact, we will have to authorize the system to make this change. You just have to accept. It is one more security measure that the operating system has for when we make a sensitive change, such as accessing the antivirus security. So, once the changes are approved, you will be redirected to a new window. From there, you will be able to manage the same type of exclusions that are done in Windows 10. After approving it, Windows Defender will not exploit items that we have added as exclusions. It will basically overlook any file or folder that we put, as if there was no threat.

Either way, just click there and choose file, folder, or process. A new window will open with Windows Explorer to go to the corresponding path. We mark the file, and we give to OK, From that moment on, Windows 11 will not consider that file or folder to consider it a threat.

Conclusion

In short, it is very easy to add exclusions to Windows Defender. This way we avoid false positives. . From that moment on, we will be able to download that problematic file or install that program that it detected as a security threat. However, we must be careful with this. We must be 100% sure that the file we want to exclude from the antivirus is really reliable. For example, we should never apply it to a document that we have downloaded from a source we do not know or that has arrived by e-mail without knowing the sender. In these cases, we are very probably dealing with a real virus. Bye!

Hello! Computer security and privacy are fundamental elements. Certainly, there are many advantages offered by the internet. However, improper use can lead to threats. For example, viruses and malware. Therefore, Microsoft has included its own security suite. We are talking about Windows Defender, a practical and efficient software. Consequently, it is not necessary to resort to third-party solutions to protect the system. In addition, this tool has 3 types of scans. A quick scan, a full scan, and an offline scan. Therefore, today we will find out which type of scan to use in Windows Defender.

What type of scan is in Windows Defender.

Windows Defender has active real-time protection. In addition, Microsoft’s antivirus has 3 types of scanning. We have the quick scan, the full scan, and the offline scan. The latter is designed to protect against viruses that attack and infect the system boot record.

The quick scan is recommended by Microsoft

This type of scan performs a quick analysis of potential locations for malware. That is, it focuses on particularly vulnerable sites. These key sites are the registry and Windows startup folders.

Windows Defender Quick Scan

On the other hand, Microsoft recommends this exam. It checks processes, memory, profiles, and certain locations on the device. Likewise, it works with active and real-time protection. In order to check all types of files every time they are opened and closed. It also applies every time we open a folder. Therefore, it is an action that provides secure protection against the system and kernel-level malware. It is likely that this scan will be sufficient to solve the system’s problems. Therefore, it is a good option to schedule it. Finally, it is advisable to run it on a regular basis.

The full scan examines the system in detail.

This type of analysis is based on the execution of a quick scan. However, it continues with a sequential examination of all files on all disks and drives. Depending on the amount of data to be analyzed, this scan can take hours to complete. However, it can be worth it. Since this type of scan is capable of detecting malware that the quick scan has failed to do. However, you should know that it will take a long time. This implies a waste of resources and energy as well.

Windows Defender Quick Scan

We have commented that the quick scan plus real-time protection is usually sufficient. Therefore, it is not recommended to run this type of test on a regular basis. It is only necessary if we are sure that malware is adversely affecting the system. In addition to having enough time to carry it out.

Offline scan, scans for viruses hidden at startup

This is a truly effective tool. Indeed, it is able to detect viruses offline. To do this, the scan is performed from a trusted environment and without having started the operating system. Moreover, this scan is performed from outside the Windows kernel. In this way, it is intended to find malware that tries to bypass the Windows Shell. This is a very common behavior of viruses that infect the master boot record (MBR). This type of test is very useful if we suspect the presence of a virus. But none of the above tests have been able to detect them. Consequently, we will be able to program it from Windows security. Then, when restarting the system, this type of scan can be executed. Ultimately we have learned what type of scan to use in Windows Defender. Another way to increase system security. Bye!

How to update the Windows Defender database

Like any good antivirus suite, Windows Defender requires updates. In fact, without them, it loses a lot of effectiveness. Since the updates feed the databases. Where the information on the malware that they try to eliminate is found. Certainly, malicious codes evolve. Therefore it is highly recommended to keep this database as updated as possible. So let’s see how to update it.

From Windows Update

The fastest way is through Windows Update. This is logical since Defender uses the same module as Windows Update. Therefore, we will use it to update the antimalware. Please follow the steps below: First open Windows Settings by pressing the Win+I combination. Once there, click on Update & Security.

Hi! Windows Defender is the integrated security solution for Windows systems. In effect, it is the shield that protects the server from local or external threats. Specifically from network threats since they can harm the organization’s services. For that reason, Windows Defender is the ideal solution to safeguard the system. However, there are special circumstances where it is necessary to disable or even uninstall it. For example, in support tasks, configuration errors, or even the purchase of a firewall or external security system. Inattention to those cases, today we will see how to uninstall and disable Windows Defender in Windows Server 2016/2019.

How to disable Windows Defender from the Security settings

Windows Defender is integrated into the security section of the system. Therefore, you only have to access this section. With this intention, press the Win+Q combination and type Security in the search bar.

Launch the server security section

The security section will be deployed immediately. Please click on Virus & Thread protection settings. Specifically, in Manage settings.

Manage security options

Finally, you only have to deactivate the pin to remove the protection in real-time. This way, Windows Defender will be temporarily suspended.

Disabling Windows Defender from the security section of Windows Server

Disable Windows Defender from PowerShell

Next, we’ll use the PowerShell console to temporarily disable Windows Defender. With this in mind, launch the console and run the following command:

Set-MpPreference -DisableRealtimeMonitoring $true

Disables WindowsDefender temporally from PowerShell

Once the work is done, you can reactivate Windows Defender using this command:

Set-MpPreference -DisableRealtimeMonitoring $false

How to uninstall Windows Defender from PowerShell

Next we will see how to uninstall Windows Defender. For this we will use again the PowerShell console. Once there, please execute the following command:

Uninstall-WindowsFeature -Name Windows-Defender

After a few seconds, the uninstallation will be complete. Please reboot the server to complete the changes.

Uninstalling Windows Defender using PowerShell

A positive aspect of this method is that it is possible to reinstall the service. With this in mind, please execute the following command:

Install-WindowsFeature -Name Windows-Defender

How to uninstall Windows Defender from CMD

Next, we will use the Command Prompt to uninstall Windows Defender. Specifically, we will use the DISM command. In addition, this command allows you to manage the system image. Please proceed with caution, as you will be uninstalling the app and installation package. Consequently, it will not be possible to reinstall Windows Defender. Finally, If you are sure to proceed, run this command from CMD:
