Prerequisites

How to download MediaWiki.

The first thing you have to do is go to the download section of the MediaWiki project page. Once there, please download the latest stable version. After the download is completed, two steps are necessary. First, unzip the file and place it at the root of the website. That is, in the httdocs directory of the Xamp installation. Now, with the web server running please open this address in your web browser: http://localhost/wiki. An image like the one shown below will be immediately displayed. Please click on set up wiki first.

Configuring MediaWiki

In the first place you set the language of the user and the wiki. Please press Continue

The wizard will then validate the prerequisites for the installation. Once the environment parameters have been checked, it is time to start the installation by clicking on Continue

Then it’s time to set up the database aspects. That is, the name, user and password. If this does not exist, then select the superuser account. Please leave the password field blank.

Then confirm the parameters to use the same account for the installation.

Now it’s time to name the wiki. In addition, you must configure the namespace of the project. Finally, set the wiki administrator credentials.With these settings, you are ready to start the MediaWiki installation. With this intention, select the option to start the installation

Finally, confirm the options to start the installation process.

After a few moments, the installation will be completed. Please click on Continue.

After the installation is completed, the wizard will generate the file LocalSettings.php. Also, the download will start automatically. If not, a link is provided to force the download.

After downloading the file, it is time to place it in the root of the installation. That is to say, in the directory where the file index.php

Finally, we are ready to enter the wiki of our website.

Install MediaWiki on Debian 10

1) Install LAMP on Debian 10

Since this is a web application that requires a database manager, we need LAMP on our server. So that’s the first step.

How to install LAMP on Debian 10?

However, make sure you have these PHP modules installed. This will ensure that the functioning of the application is as expected.

2) Create a new database and user for MediaWiki

MediaWiki stores data in a relational database management system such as MariaDB or MySQL. It is already installed and configured as part of the LAMP stack. However, for security reasons, it’s a good idea to create a new user that has exclusive permissions on the database we’re going to create for MediaWiki.

So let’s go to the MariaDB console and get started:

:~$ sudo mysql -u root -p
> CREATE DATABASE mediawikidb;
> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON mediawikidb.* TO mediawikiuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'mediawikipss';
> FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
> exit;

With this, we will be able to continue.

3) Download and install MediaWiki on Debian 10

We have already prepared our server to install MediaWiki. Then, we will be able to download it and start with the installation. To do this, we are going to go to the root folder of apache and from there we proceed to download it.

:~$ cd /var/www/html/ 
:~$ sudo wget -c https://releases.wikimedia.org/mediawiki/1.33/mediawiki-1.33.1.tar.gz

Next, decompress the folder.

:~$ sudo tar -xzvf mediawiki-1.33.1.tar.gz

Then, I will rename the folder to make it more accessible.

:~$ sudo mv mediawiki-1.33.1 mediawiki

Finally, enable the apache rewrite module and restart it.

:~$ sudo a2enmod rewrite
:~$ sudo systemctl restart apache2

Now, we can complete the installation using the web browser.

4) Install MediaWiki on Debian 10 (II)

Once you have prepared everything, just complete the installation using your web browser. To do this, go to http://your-server/mediawiki/mw-config/ to start.

Press continue.

On the next screen, you will have to accept the license terms.

Then, you have to write the credentials of the database you just defined.

Then, you will have to configure some database settings.

Next, type the wiki name. There, you have to create the admin account.

After that, start the installation.

If everything went well, you will see the following screen. It tells us that everything went well and that there is a file called LocalSettings.php to download and copy into the installation directory.

If you are working with a remote server, then we will have to copy the downloaded file to the MediaWiki installation directory.

It’s simple thanks to the scp command.

:~$ scp Path_file your-server:/home/your-home/

For example:

:~$ scp ~/Downloads/LocalSettings.php 192.168.250.15:/home/your-home/

You will have to enter the user key of the server and then it will remain on the server.

On the server, move it to the MediaWiki installation directory.

:~$ mv /home/your-home/LocalSettings.php /var/www/html/mediawiki/

Finally, go back to your web browser and go to http://your-server/mediawiki and start enjoying the installation.

So, let us start to install MediaWiki on Debian 9.

1. Install Apache web server

The first step is to install Apache web server because MediaWiki is a web application. So let us install it.

:~$ su
:~# apt install apache2

When the installation is complete, Debian configures Apache to start by default. So now you can check the status of the service.

:~# systemctl status apache2

So, Apache is properly running.

2. Install PHP 7.3

Debian 9 Stretch has PHP 7.0 in its official repositories. It’s a great version of PHP but it’s getting a little out of date. So let’s install PHP 7.3 on Debian 9.

Next, install all the PHP modules required for MediaWiki.

:~#  apt install php7.3 php7.3-mysql libapache2-mod-php7.3 php7.3-xml php7.3-mbstring php7.3-apcu php7.3-intl  php7.3-gd php7.3-cli php7.3-curl

After that, you can do some extra configuration on PHP. To increase the PHP memory handling capacity. To do it, edit the PHP configuration file.

:~# nano /etc/php/7.3/apache2/php.ini

And make the following changes

upload_max_filesize = 200M
memory_limit = 128M

Finally, restart Apache.

:~# systemctl restart apache2

3. Install MariaDB

Now it is MariaDB’s turn. MariaDB is a free and open source database manager. It is very easy to learn but robust in features.

So, let us install it.

:~# apt install mariadb-server

Next, set a root password using the mysql_secure_installation script.

:~# mysql_secure_installation

You will be asked some configuration questions. In my case, I will answer like this: Y, N, Y, Y.

Then, it is necessary to create a new database for MediaWiki. Besides a MariaDB user as well.

:~# mysql -u root -p
CREATE DATABASE mediawikidb;
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON mediawikidb.* TO 'mediawikiuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'mediawikipss';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
exit;

4. Install MediaWiki

Now you can install MediaWiki. To do this, you need to download it to the Apache root directory.

:~# cd /var/www/html/
:~# wget https://releases.wikimedia.org/mediawiki/1.32/mediawiki-1.32.1.tar.gz

After that, decompress it.

:~# tar -xfvz mediawiki-1.32.1.tar.gz

Next, remove the downloaded file and rename the generated folder.

:~# rm -r mediawiki-1.32.1.tar.gz
:~# mv mediawiki-1.32.1 mediawiki

So, open your web browser and access to your browser to start the installation. For example, http://SERVER_IP/mediawiki/mw-config/.

Then, it will show you a screen where you will see the software requirements and license terms.

Next, configure the database.

Next, choose the database engine.

Next, create the admin account. Scroll down and you have two choise, start the installation now or set some configuration.

In the next screen, you will be able to modify other options such as the sending of mail and the license of the articles.

Next, you can start the installation.

Now, the installation is complete.

Now, the screen shows a message where you have to download a configuration file and place it in the MediaWiki folder to complete the installation.

So, use the scp command on your host computer.

:~$ scp Path_file your-server:/home/your-home/

Then, on the server move it to the MediaWiki root directory.

:~# mv /home/your-home/LocalSettings.php /var/www/html/mediawiki/

Next, come back to your web browser and go to http://SERVER_IP/mediawiki/ and you will see your wiki.
