Sometimes we may need to save a web page. Consequently, we will be able to view it later or on another device. As you can see, it is a very interesting feature. For this, we will use different methods and services. Consequently, we are going to explain what we have to do to download a web page completely. Most of all to be able to view it offline on that device or on any other device. Stay with us to learn how to download a web page.

Reasons to download a web page.

You are probably wondering what is the use of downloading a web page. However, sometimes it is essential. Consider this: you are flying in an airplane. Well, there, we are not going to have an Internet connection. At best, the connection will not be normal or will be very limited. So, if we want to read information from a site we are traveling to, we can save web pages we have previously found and read them offline. Furthermore, We might be in an area without signal coverage. Or we have little data left, and we want to take advantage of it and not run out. In these cases, we will also be able to download a web page and read it later. Even if we do not have an internet connection.

It may also be that we have internet on the mobile phone. However, you may want to view these pages better on your computer without a connection. We can download it on one computer and move it to another or previously do it. We will be able to read the content without any problems.

Methods to download a web page

Then we come to the neuralgic point. How can we download a website and be able to view it without an Internet connection? We will look at different services and tools. Its function is to download the content and have it all ready for us to simply click on the file and start the page anywhere. Although we do not have a network connection.

HTTrack

The first option we will study is HTTrack. It is certainly one of the most used tools to download a website. It is an open-source program which is available for many platforms. Furthermore, it certainly fulfills its function in an excellent way. In addition, we can generate different projects. To start using it, just go to the project’s website. From the download section, you can select among the different versions offered. As already mentioned, it is available for Windows, Linux, or Android. Then we install it and can start using it.

The wizard will ask you to assign a name to the new project. Next, you just have to choose the website to download. Now decide where to save it and continue the process until it is completely downloaded to your computer. Finally, we will only have to open the index.html or index.htm file.

Wget

Wget is another option for these tasks. It is a free and cross-platform program. Consequently, it is available for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Its operation is not as simple as the previous one, since it works through the command line. It allows you to retrieve files via HTTP and FTP protocols. Therefore, you will be able to access files from a web page.

It was originally intended for downloading files individually. However, it can also be used to download an entire web page. To start using it, just go to the website and download it. A portable version is available for Windows. If you want detailed information on how to install it, you can check our tutorial about it.

Webcopy

This application is for Windows use only. It allows you to automatically download the content of a website. We will also be able to store it locally to open it at another time without needing access to Internet. To download it, just go to the project’s web page. Just go to the download section and choose the version that best suits your needs. After installation, it is ready to use. You just have to find the corresponding address and start the process.

SiteSucker

This is another option available for only a few operating systems. Specifically, it works on iOS and macOS. However, it is a really useful tool for users of these systems. It also allows you to download a complete web page. As usual, we have to go to the website and download the program. After running it, we are ready to download the web page. Just enter the desired address.

On a positive note, this program is not limited to downloading text from the website. On the contrary, it also includes multimedia files, such as images. It is very useful to be able to view a page in its entirety, without any kind of restrictions.

How to download a website directly with the browser

We have seen some programs with which we can completely download a website. They are very intriguing as they offer additional features. However, you may want a simpler option. In that case, we can download a website directly from the web browser. It doesn’t matter if it is Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Mozilla Firefox.

Let’s start with Google Chrome. This method also applies to Chromium-based browsers, such as Microsoft Edge. So, what we will do is go to the settings menu. Next, seek the print option. Note that you must do this with the desired page open. Consequently, the print menu will be displayed. Now, instead of selecting a physical printer, you must select Save as PDF. Finally, set the save location and that’s it! You will only have to go to this location to enjoy the web page at any time.

Concerning Mozilla Firefox, the procedure is very similar. Once again, we enter the browser menu. In the same way, we select Print. But instead of choosing the printer, we activate the Save as PDF option. Set the save location, and you will have the website ready to access at any time. Even without an internet connection. OK so we have seen how to download a web page. As always, we have offered you several alternatives for you to select the one you prefer. Bye!

Creating a website is a process that requires time and in-depth knowledge of HTML and other languages. However, more and more tools are being created to help create one quickly and efficiently. Today I will show you how to install Hugo on Ubuntu 20.04 / Debian 10.

Hugo is a static web site generator. By static web sites we mean web sites that do not process data. That is, they cannot process forms or generate documents.

Usually these web sites are made for small projects and informative sites. Even small shops can display their products quickly.

Well, with Hugo you can create these websites quickly and easily.

Install Hugo on Ubuntu 20.04 / Debian 10

Hugo is a quite popular program and this makes installing it in Linux and specifically in Debian a simple process.

First of all, you can install Hugo through the official repositories of the distribution. To do this, open a terminal and run the following:

:~$ sudo apt install hugo

The main problem with this method is that the latest version available is not installed. And in many cases, very old versions.

So this method, although simple, is not recommended.

Another way to install it is through Homebrew. This package manager for Linux and macOS, guarantees that you get the latest stable version.

How to install Homebrew on Debian 10 / Ubuntu 20.04?

To install it using this tool, just use it:

:~$ brew install hugo

This method is quite reliable, but there is another.

Hugo can be installed using the pre-compiled packages for Debian. To download it, run the following command:

:~$ cd /tmp/
:~$ wget https://github.com/gohugoio/hugo/releases/download/v0.72.0/hugo_extended_0.72.0_Linux-64bit.deb

And then install it, with the following command:

:~$ sudo dpkg -i hugo_extended_0.72.0_Linux-64bit.deb

And now Hugo, you are available to work with him.

First step with Hugo

Hugo is a website generator. So the first thing to do is to create a new site.

:~$ hugo new site [path_site]

For example, I’ve created a new site:

:~$ hugo new site macaco

This will create a new folder called macaco. Access this folder and we will start the work from there.

The first thing is to add a new theme for the site. If you want to add all of them, you can use this command:

:~$ git clone --recursive https://github.com/spf13/hugoThemes themes

This install all the Hugo themes. It can be useful to test which one you want.

In my case, I chose a specific theme:

:~$ git clone https://github.com/matcornic/hugo-theme-learn.git themes/learn

It is important that you put the themes in the themes folder.

After the theme is installed, you have to tell Hugo to use that particular theme.

To do this, you need to define it in the config.toml

1.- Hugo Config file

There you can also define other newly created site configurations.

Now, all you have to do is create a new index to be displayed on the site. You can create this with the following command:

:~$ hugo new _index.md

As you can see, the file has an md extension, this means that you can add content using markdown. Great.

2.- Creating a new site with hugo on Ubuntu 20.04 / Debian 10

You can also create new categories to shape the site:

:~$ hugo new [category]/[file.md]

And to view your website, use the following command:

:~$ hugo serve
| EN
-------------------+-----
Pages            |  7
Paginator pages  |  0
Non-page files   |  0
Static files     | 77
Processed images |  0
Aliases          |  0
Sitemaps         |  1
Cleaned          |  0

Built in 608 ms
Watching for changes in /home/angelo/macaco/{archetypes,content,data,layouts,static,themes}
Watching for config changes in /home/angelo/macaco/config.toml
Environment: "development"
Serving pages from memory
Running in Fast Render Mode.
The else is up to you. With Hugo you can create static websites quickly.

Conclusion

In short, Hugo is a program quite in line with the paradigms of our times. Where the speed and efficiency of the processes must be the norm for the creation of websites. In the case of Hugo, it only creates static websites but it is very useful in certain cases.

There are a lot of tools to create and manage websites today. Websites very different from each other can be easily managed and created thanks to CMS. Of this great group of tools, WordPress stands out for its ease and popularity. However, there are many other alternatives, able to face it. Each of them, dedicated to a specific sector, but all with a common goal, provide everything you need to host a dynamic website without too much effort. So, in this post, I will show you how to install Dotclear on Ubuntu 18.04.

Dotclear is an open-source web publishing software published in 2003 by Olivier Meunier. The project’s purpose is to provide a user-friendly tool allowing anyone to publish on the web, regardless of their technical skills. Dotclear possesses a rich functionality that makes it a high-quality publishing tool, equaling and even outperforming other similar tools in some aspects. For example:

Easy publication.

Fully customizable theme.

User-friendly administration.

Media management.

Naturally optimized for search engine.

Complete trackback support.

As you can see, there are many features that make it a serious alternative to our website.

So, let us start.

Getting Dotclear on Ubuntu

1) Install LAMP

The first step is to have a functional LAMP server. Because Dotclear is a web application that requires a database manager.

So you can read our post about how to install LAMP on Ubuntu 18.04.

I will just point out that it’s necessary to install some extra PHP modules. They are:

libapache2-mod-php7.2 php7.2-common php7.2-mysql php7.2-gmp php7.2-curl php7.2-intl php7.2-mbstring php7.2-xmlrpc php7.2-gd php7.2-xml php7.2-cli php7.2-zip

To install them, just type:

:~$ sudo apt install libapache2-mod-php7.2 php7.2-common php7.2-mysql php7.2-gmp php7.2-curl php7.2-intl php7.2-mbstring php7.2-xmlrpc php7.2-gd php7.2-xml php7.2-cli php7.2-zip

2) Configure PHP

In order for Dotclear to work without any problems, it is necessary to modify some parameters of the PHP configuration. So you have to edit the configuration file:

:~$ sudo nano /etc/php/7.2/apache2/php.ini

Now, edit the following parameters.

file_uploads = On
allow_url_fopen = On
short_open_tag = On
memory_limit = 256M
upload_max_filesize = 200M
max_execution_time = 360

I’ll give you a little trick, use in nano the key combination CTRL + W to find the exact term and not waste time.

Next, restart Apache.

:~$ sudo systemctl restart apache2

3) Creating the database for Dotclear

Once we have all the components installed, it’s time to create the database dedicated to Dotclear.

So run the following command:

:~$ sudo mysql -u root -p
CREATE DATABASE dotclear;
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON dotclear.* TO 'dotclearuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'dotpss';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
exit;

1.- Creating the database for Dotclear

4) Install Dotclear on Ubuntu 18.04

Now you have to download Dotclear to install it. To do this, run the following commands:

:~$ cd /tmp/
:~$ wget http://download.dotclear.org/latest.tar.gz

2.- Download Dotclear on Ubuntu 18.04

Next, decompress it and move it to the Apache root folder.

:~$ tar xvf latest.tar.gz
:~$ sudo mv dotclear /var/www/html/dotclear

After that, it is necessary to set the proper permissions to the folder.

:~$ sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html/dotclear/
:~$ sudo chmod -R 755 /var/www/html/dotclear/

3.- Set the permission to the folder

Now you have to make a virtual host for Dotclear run correctly.

:~$ sudo nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/dotclear.conf

And add the following:

<VirtualHost *:80>
     ServerAdmin admin@your-server.com
     DocumentRoot /var/www/html/dotclear
     ServerName your-server.com
     ServerAlias www.your-server.com

     <Directory /var/www/html/dotclear/>
          Options FollowSymlinks
          AllowOverride All
          Require all granted
     </Directory>

     ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log
     CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined
</VirtualHost>

4.- Create a new virtual host for Dotclear

Save the changes and close the file.

Next, enable the new virtual host and the rewrite module. After that, restart Apache.

:~$ sudo a2ensite dotclear.conf
:~$ sudo a2enmod rewrite
:~$ sudo systemctl restart apache2

5.- Restarting Apache

5) Complete the installation

Finally, open the web browser and go to the server to run Dotclear. You will see the following:

Now, you will see the admin panel.

10.- Admin panel

And that’s it.

Conclusion

As you can see, the installation of Dotclear is not complicated, but it opens a new possibility to manage our blog or website. So, this is a very competitive alternative in a market dominated by WordPress.
