Passwords are used to prevent an intruder from entering an account or registry. We can put passwords on social networks like Facebook or Twitter. Also in the mail or to enter the computer. In this post, we will explain what you should do to set a password to the bookmarks in Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. This way you can improve security and prevent them from accessing the pages you have stored.

Why encrypt browser bookmarks

Bookmarks or favorites are websites that we save in the browser to view later or that we frequent. Basically, it is a folder where these sites are stored. We click on the folder and the links appear to enter the corresponding web page. It is very useful when we usually enter many websites. We can use it in the main browsers, such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

Now, why put a password to the browser bookmarks? This is useful if you use a shared computer. For example, at a workplace, at home, etc. Maybe you save web pages that are important for your work, studies. Or you simply don’t want someone to be able to modify them or, by mistake, delete them.

By setting a password, another person who can get into that computer and open Chrome or Firefox would not be able to see the contents of the browser’s bookmarks. They would not be able to know what pages you have saved, nor would they be able to modify or delete them. One more guarantee to avoid problems.

This is something that you will be able to do in both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. However, the browser itself does not have a native option for this. You will have to use an extension, although the process is simple and fast. You can set up a password and avoid problems.

How to set a password for Chrome favorites

First, we are going to explain how to encrypt bookmarks with a password in the Google browser. The process is simple. However, you will need to install an add-on. We recommend downloading this type of extensions from official sources. The Chrome store is a good option to download this type of software without risk.

You can use the Secure Bookmarks extension. As its name suggests, the purpose of this add-on is to secure the bookmarks we have in the Google Chrome browser. It allows you to add any page to the list of bookmarks. In addition, all of them will be protected by a password of your choice.

The first thing you need to do is to add it to your browser. When you have done this, you will automatically see the Secure Bookmarks icon appear in the top bar of the browser. The first time you open it, a window will appear like the one you see in the image below, where you will have to enter a password.

From there, all you have to do is go to the extension icon and click on the New Bookmark button, and you will start saving pages there. You only have to do that when you are inside a website. When you enter the password, you will see that you are logged in. This way, you can access all the bookmarks you create and put in that protected folder.

How to use Secure Bookmark

If you log out, you will not be able to enter those bookmarks you have created. Therefore, if someone has physical access to your computer and enters the browser, they would not be able to see what pages you have bookmarked. You could click on the extension, but it would ask for a password to get in.

You will also see the New Folder button. In this case, what you do is create a new folder. You can create as many as you want. This way, you will be able to sort all the pages you are saving in favorites. You will be able to have more control and create lists according to your preferences. Also, all these folders will be protected thanks to Secure Bookmarks.

So, as you can see, it is a simple way to encrypt with passwords the web pages that you save in favorites in Google Chrome. All you have to do is install it, set a master password and start saving websites.

Steps to set a password for Firefox bookmarks

You can do something similar also in Mozilla Firefox. In this case we have tested the Private Bookmarks extension. It works very well on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. This way, you will prevent them from being available to anyone who has access to your computer.

This time, you have to go to the official Mozilla Firefox store and download the extension there. Once you install it, you will see the icon appear in the top bar. At first, you will only be able to use it in a private Firefox window. However, you will be able to modify it. Open the application, and you will see a button to choose the password.

From there, you can start saving web pages in Firefox bookmarks and encrypt them with a password thanks to Private Bookmarks. It is an interesting add-on for the Mozilla browser with which you can increase your security and privacy.

Conclusions

In short, as you have seen, it is simple and quick to encrypt bookmarks with a password in both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. In both cases, you will have to install extensions. We know that they do not have native functions. They are free, secure and work well on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. However, our advice is to always download these add-ons from the official browser store.

Should I password-protect my browser’s bookmarks? This will depend on what kind of user you are. That is, if you share the computer with other people or if it is yours own. If you want to prevent third parties who have access to view the pages you save, modify them or even delete them. Then it is a good option to use this type of extensions that you will find on the Internet.

There are many options available to us to maintain security when surfing the Internet and using devices. The most common is to install an antivirus. Indeed, this type of program will prevent the entry of malware and warn us in case there is something strange. But this is not the only option, as there are many more tools. In this post, we will focus on security extensions for the browser. Read on to learn about some of the best antivirus browser extensions.

Why protect your browser

Cyberattacks can affect many of the programs we use daily. But the browser is undoubtedly one of the most affected. After all, it is the one we use to surf the web, open web pages, log in to social networks and forums. When surfing the Internet, we can make mistakes. For example, clicking on a link that takes us to a malicious site and starts downloading a file that is actually malware. You may also mistakenly install a supposed Chrome or Firefox update, and it is actually a virus.

It is therefore significant to always protect the browser. Occasionally, it is not enough just to have an antivirus installed on the system, such as Windows. It is necessary to take certain extra precautions, and that is where browser security extensions come into play. Consequently, you can install an antivirus for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or whatever browser you use.

It also helps to save energy. Even Gmail has done it, though not yet fully. So, there are extensions that do the job. For now, we suggest you use an extension like I don’t care about cookies.
Hello, friends. In this short post, you will learn how to install OpenH264 on Fedora 33. You will find this post especially useful if you use your web browser a lot to play video files from the Internet.

What is OpenH264 and why is it necessary?

The technical advantages of the H.264 codec were a strong advantage over Open Source alternatives such as VP8, used in the WebM container. The main problem was licensing and cost because you had to pay to use MPEG LA. So, In order to play many streaming videos, you need the H.264 codec. However, due to licensing restrictions, H.264 is not open source like Firefox.

On the other hand, Cisco has taken their H.264 implementation and open-sourced it under BSD license terms. Development and maintenance will be overseen by a board from the industry and the open-source community.

OpenH264 has been launched in collaboration with Cisco and Mozilla. This plugin comes with Firefox but not always in its latest version.

In addition to this, it is possible to install other plugins to be used with Gstreamer in desktop projects.

So, let’s go.

Install OpenH264 on Fedora from the Cisco repository

The first thing to know is that Fedora through the
fedora-repos
package includes an OpenH264 binary that is licensed by Cisco. However, it is possible to add the repository of it, to obtain a better integration with the system and to obtain other necessary packages.

So, add the repository in question:

sudo dnf config-manager --set-enabled fedora-cisco-openh264

The command will not generate any output on the screen. After that, install the necessary plugins.

sudo dnf install gstreamer1-plugin-openh264 mozilla-openh264

1.- Install OpenH264 on Fedora 33

This command installs not only the Firefox plugin but also the Gstreamer plugin needed for various projects.

Afterward, you need to open Firefox, go to menu → Add-ons → Plugins, and enable the OpenH264 plugin.

2.- Configuring OpenH264

Now it is necessary to make some changes in Firefox.

To do this, open it, and in the address bar type
about:config

From the Search field type in 264 and a handful of options will appear. Give the following Preference Names a value of true by double-clicking on false:

media.gmp-gmpopenh264.autoupdate
media.gmp-gmpopenh264.enabled
media.gmp-gmpopenh264.provider.enabled
media.peerconnection.video.h264_enabled

Finally, restart Firefox.

Conclusion

Having our Firefox and Fedora ready to play content over the Internet is never too much to get the most out of both. With this small and simple tutorial, it is possible to do it quickly.

Windows 10 has different options to improve the user experience. Indeed, it may be that we visit a website constantly. This may be for work, leisure, or study reasons. Consequently, we can turn this website into a Windows 10 app. The purpose is to have the website as an additional system resource. Including the traditional actions of the apps. However, the website will look and behave as it would in a browser. The difference is that there are no browser elements in the application window. That is, the bookmarks bar, address bar, etc. will not be present. In fact, the app will use the selected browser in the background. Either Firefox Mozilla. In today’s post, we will see how to convert a web page to Windows 10 App.

How to turn a website into a Windows 10 app using Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft has relaunched an innovative version of its Edge browser. Which breaks with tradition by being based on Chromium. Indeed, it shares the code with Google Chrome and it is possible to install the same extensions. In addition, it has proven to be very fast and reliable. Let’s see how to do it:

The first thing you have to do is to open the website. Once there, please follow the following path: Menu>Apps>Install this site as an App.

Menu>Apps>Install this site as an App.

In the pop-up window, please assign the name.

When you open Firefox web browser there is a lot that happens in the background that you don’t see. It performs routine checks, seeks profiles, loads your extensions and add-ons, establishes a network connection and activates the proxy server if used. All these things you might not see, but they all occur quietly in the background and all have an obvious impact on the startup time of Firefox. This will become even more evident as you overload the browser with extensions and add-ons. Basically, the more you pack in – the more you’re giving it to do – the longer Firefox will take to boot.

Once Firefox has loaded all the aforementioned background stuff, it will then connect to your pre-configured home page and render the page for you. Having your favorite search engine configured as your home page might be convenient, but unfortunately it also slows down Firefox even more. Thankfully there is a small tweak you can make to your Firefox home page to significantly reduce its startup time.

The small tweak involves simply replacing the Firefox home page from an internet website to a local image file on your hard drive.

Currently, we have our favorite search engine set as the default home page in Firefox.

For our example, we have created a simple placeholder image that we have saved to our hard drive and will use as our new home page.

First, open the image in Firefox by pressing “CTRL+O” and copy the local URL.

Now we simply need to delve into the Firefox configuration options. In the navigation menu simply enter “about:config” and confirm the warning message.

Once in the configuration options, simply search for the term “home”.

Now we simply paste in the local URL we copied earlier into the configuration option for “browser.startup.homepage”.

Now exit the configuration options and press on the “Home” button in Firefox. You will now see your new image file.

To really see the full benefits of this small yet effective Firefox tweak exit the browser completely and then restart Firefox. You will now see the full benefits of using an image as your Home page in Firefox, as it really makes Firefox startup much quicker.

Firefox is a web browser created and maintained by the Mozilla Foundation. Together with Google Chrome, they dominate the web browser market. With each new version, Firefox improves and improves even the latest stable version, is considered by Mozilla as the fastest. However, scroll down does not feel as fast and smooth as it should. So in this post, I am going to teach you how to improve Firefox scroll down.

Is slowness a Firefox problem or a simple bad reputation?

The truth is that Firefox has always performed less well than Google Chrome. This has always been the case, but since the Quantum version, this gap has decreased quite a bit. So much so that it is possible to say that Firefox has become the main alternative to Google Chrome. However, in Linux Firefox is everyone’s preferred option.

Although Firefox has improved, many users still claim that when browsing many websites, scrolling down is not smooth. Or it does not work as it should. Then it feels like the browser is slow when it is not.

Improve the Firefox scroll Downfire

To achieve our goal, it is necessary to access the browser configuration and modify some values. With this, we will obtain more fluid navigation and according to our times.

Open Firefox and in the address bar type
about:config
and press Enter. You will see a warning that tells you that you can crash the browser. Click on the blue I accept the risk button.

Now in the search box, type
mousewheel.min_line_scroll_amount
and modify the value. To do this double click and assign a value of 100. To save the change click Ok.

1.- Improve the Firefox Scroll down

Then search for
general.smoothScroll.mouseWheel.durationMaxMS
and assign it the value of 600. Remember that to do so you must double click on it.

2.- Firefox Settings

Finally, search for the
general.smoothScroll.mouseWheel.durationMinMS
and assign it the value of 400.

3.- Changing the Firefox settings to improve the scroll down

For all this to work, you need to restart Firefox. And now you have learned how to improve Firefox scroll down.

While it is true that fewer and fewer web applications require Java, they are still widely used. And if there is something that characterizes Java is the solidity and stability but also the consumption of resources. In this sense, the same web browsers are consuming more and more resources thanks to the extensions and their design. So, if you are running a Java application on the web and it is heavy the java plugin will consume more and more disk and can cause a problem. That’s why, in this post, I will show you limit disk usage by the Java web plugin in the web browser.

The Java control panel

The Java Control Panel is a small application built into Java that allows you to control the behavior of the Java web plugin. It has several tabs with different options according to our needs.

An example of the utility of this utility is that with it, we can use a proxy only for the Java web plugin. This way, we won’t affect our main connection. On the other hand, we can also define which JRE to use if we have several installed.

Besides all this, this utility allows you to update the plugin frequently. And of course, it allows limiting the use of the disk by the plugin.

Let us do it.

Limit the disk usage by the Java web plugin

The Java Control Panel comes when Java is installed on the computer. However, it does not have a launcher in the main menu itself. So maybe it’s a bit hard to locate it.

To launch it, open a terminal emulator and run this command:

:~$ jcontrol

1.- Java control panel

Next, go to the web settings tab. And next to the Temporary files settings tab.

2.- Limit eh disk usage by the Java plugin

There in the Disk space section, you can define how much the plugin will use the disk. Vital if you have little space or if you want to minimize the disk reading.

Conclusion

Limiting disk usage by the Java web plugin is easy and can save a lot of resources when running Java applications on the web. With the passage of time, it is less and less common to find one, but there is always one on the market.

Please share this post with your friends.

Nowadays, there are a lot of web browsers. Most of them are cross-platform which makes them available for Linux. However, in Linux, it seems that the majority prefers Firefox, but always place for the exploration of alternatives for certain cases. We must bear in mind that the web plays a determining role in today’s society. For example, many applications are developed with the aim of being on the Internet. Or even, leisure activities such as enjoying multimedia services are done from the web browser. So knowing alternatives is never too much. So in this post, I will show you how to install Vivaldi on Fedora 30.

Vivaldi is a cross-platform web browser focused on performance and innovation. It is relatively new compared to veterans like Firefox, Google Chrome or Opera, but thanks to its speed and innovation have earned a place in many Linux users. Precisely thanks to its innovation that I like very much, for example, has been one of the first to support Razer Chroma.

So, let us start to install Vivaldi on Fedora 30.

Install Vivaldi on Fedora 30

The first thing we should do is visit Vivaldi’s website. It’s very nice and quite intuitive.

1.- Vivaldi web site

On the site, you will also find downloads for other operating systems. But, Download the RPM package.

2.- Download Vivaldi web browser

Then wait for the file to download. It should not take long.
