Hello! Have you heard about virtual machines? Do you know what virtualization is? Did you know that Windows 11 has its own virtualization approach already included? Well, we will try to answer those questions in this post. Just so we understand, Hyper-V is Microsoft’s internal virtualization solution for Windows 11. Thanks to this tool, we will be able to create virtual machines and run them on virtual hardware. It was first introduced in Windows Server 2008. In fact, the definitive version was released in June of the same year. With the launch of Windows 8 it reached all users. We also saw it in later versions such as Windows 8.1, Windows 10 or Windows 11. Let us see how we can take advantage of it and how we can enable Hyper-V. In addition to how to create virtual machines without using third-party tools.

What is a Virtual Machine

A virtual machine is a software that creates an independent layer where the operation of a real computer is emulated. Additionally, it includes all the hardware components you need to run a different operating system or a specific application. It can be run in a window as a separate computing environment. A virtual machine works like a computer within a computer. Also, it and allows end-users to use apps as they would on an actual machine. It is an excellent tool for programmers, developers and IT professionals. Indeed, this environment allows you to create, deploy and manage applications and software securely.

What is Hyper-V

Hyper-V is a hardware virtualization product from Microsoft that allows users to create, run and manage virtual machines on a host operating system. In addition, Hyper-V provides hardware virtualization. As a result, each virtual machine runs on virtual hardware. It also allows multiple operating systems to be created and run on a single physical machine. In addition, Hyper-V also allows users to perform system administration tasks such as backup, restore, and migration of virtual machines.

What are the requirements for using Hyper-V?

The first thing to know is that Hyper-V is available as an optional feature in Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, and Education. If you don’t know what version of Windows you have, you can find out by going to Settings>System>About. Then check the Windows specifications section to find your edition of Windows. But we must not only have a compatible Windows. In fact, we must also enable hardware virtualization in BIOS. This function is usually disabled. Therefore, we must be the ones to enable it.

When should we use Hyper-V?

There are some cases in which we could use Hyper-V. In this way, not having to rely on another third-party tool such as VirtualBox or VMware Workstation.

Run and test an older version of Windows or a non-Microsoft signature operating system.

Test software on multiple operating systems using many virtual machines on a single host system.

Enabling hardware virtualization in BIOS

As we have told you before, for everything to work perfectly, the hardware virtualization part of the BIOS must be operational and enabled. To perform this task, you should consult the user manual. Indeed, each brand uses a different way to enable this function. For knowledge purposes, let’s assume you have a computer from a well-known brand, such as HP.

Turn off the computer.

Now we turn on the system and start pressing the Esc key to see the boot menu.

It is time to press F10 to enter the BIOS Setup.

In the BIOS Setup Utility, we use the arrow key and open the Setup tab.

Next, we go down to the Virtualization Technology option.

Press Enter and then click on Enable.

Press the F10 key to save the changes and exit.

The computer will restart, and the virtualization tool will be enabled.

Hyper-V on Windows: control panel

Now it is the turn of Windows 11 and the ways that we have to enable the Hyper-V. The first one is by using the Windows Control Panel as follows:

Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.

Type Control Panel and open the option that pops up.

Now go to Programs>Programs and Features.

In the left pane, we click to Turn Windows features on or off.

Now, in the Windows Features dialog box, we select Hyper-V.

We must make sure that when we expand this option, Hyper-V Management Tools and Hyper-V Platform come up as active.

Then we click on OK.

As these are optional features, Windows will begin to install and enable them on the computer. This process may take some time to complete.

When it is finished, click on Restart Now.

Hyper-V on Windows: Command Prompt

Another way to perform this same action is to use the Command Prompt. DISM is used to get Hyper-V running on the computer.

We write cmd in the task bar and when the option appears we click on Run as Administrator.

Now that we are inside the Command Prompt, we write the following: DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /All /FeatureName:Microsoft-Hyper-V

Once we press Enter, it will start enabling the Hyper-V feature, and we will see the progress on the screen.

Once the operation completes successfully, you will need to reboot your PC. Then, press Y on your keyboard to confirm the action.

Hyper-V on Windows: Windows PowerShell

It is certainly a simple process with the command prompt. On the other hand, with Windows PowerShell it will be equally easy.

In the search box of the taskbar, we write PowerShell, and we give to Run as administrator as soon as it comes out.

Already in PowerShell, we write the following command, and we press Enter: Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V-All

PowerShell will start the Hyper-V enablement process. If successful, we will be prompted to restart the PC.

These are the ways we have to enable Hyper-V in Microsoft’s operating system. As you have seen, it is very simple, surely much more than you expected, to have Hyper-V fully operational in Windows 11. This way you can enjoy the benefits of virtualization on your computer. With the added bonus of not having to purchase or download additional software. See you soon!

Hello! Imagine any of these situations. For example, you want to test an operating system, but you have no space on your hard disk. Or you simply want to test a program that does not work on your operating system, but on another one. You probably think that the only solution is to install it on your hard disk. In such a case, you would have to format the hard disk, with the consequent loss of information. Besides, it is a process that requires certain knowledge and special attention from the user. But this is not necessarily so. Maybe you have heard about virtual machines. We are talking about software that allows you to run an operating system on another system contained in a computer. But what exactly is a virtual machine? What does it do? How does its mechanism work? We will try to answer these questions.

What is a virtual machine?

A virtual machine (VM) is a software implementation of a computer that runs on another computer. This way, allowing multiple operating systems to run on the same physical machine. It provides a virtualized environment for running applications, which are isolated from the host operating system and other VMs.

How a virtual machine works?

A virtual machine works by using a hypervisor, also known as a virtual machine monitor, to virtualize the underlying hardware of a physical computer. The hypervisor creates virtual devices and emulates their behavior. This way, it can to provide a virtual environment for the operating system and applications running within the VM. The VM communicates with the hypervisor, which in turn communicates with the physical hardware. So it allows the VM to access physical resources such as CPU, memory, and storage. This allows multiple VMs to run on the same physical machine. Also, each one with its own operating system and applications, without interfering with each other.

What are the advantages of using a virtual machine?

Some advantages of using a virtual machine include:

Isolation: VMs provide a layer of isolation between the host operating system and applications. Therefore, reducing the risk of contamination or system instability.

Cost-effectiveness: VMs can be a cost-effective solution for running multiple operating systems and applications on the same physical machine. This way reducing the need for multiple physical computers.

Portability: VMs can be easily moved between physical machines, making it easier to migrate to new hardware or to recover from a failure.

Compatibility: VMs can run older or incompatible applications, allowing them to continue to be used even on newer hardware or operating systems.

Test environment: VMs are available to create a safe and controlled environment for testing new software or configurations without affecting the host operating system

Disadvantages of working with virtual machines

Some disadvantages of working with virtual machines include:

Performance: VMs can have lower performance compared to running directly on physical hardware, as they must share the physical resources of the host machine.

Resource utilization: Running multiple VMs on a single physical machine can consume a large amount of resources. Especially memory and storage.

Complexity: Virtualization can introduce additional complexity to an IT environment, requiring specialized knowledge and skills to manage and maintain the virtual infrastructure.

Licensing costs: Some virtualization platforms and operating systems have additional licensing costs that can add to the overall cost of implementing virtualization.

Security: VMs can be vulnerable to security threats just like physical computers. Therefore, additional security measures may be required to secure the virtual environment.

What are the requirements for Windows to run virtual machines?

The requirements for Windows to run virtual machines are:

A 64-bit processor with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT)

At least 4 GB of RAM

At least 64 GB of free hard disk space

Hyper-V and Containers Windows features enabled

Windows 10/11 Pro or Enterprise (64-bit) version 1909 or later

A GPU with WDDM 2.0 driver for GPU acceleration (optional)

What is Hyper V, the virtualization module for windows?

Hyper-V is a native hypervisor from Microsoft that provides virtualization technology for creating and running virtual machines on Windows operating systems. It allows multiple operating systems to run on a single physical machine. In the same way, providing isolation and security for each virtual machine and enabling efficient utilization of hardware resources. With Hyper-V, users can create and manage virtual machines. Also configuring virtual switches, storage, and network interfaces, and monitor virtual machine performance and resource usage. It is available as a feature in Windows 10/11 Pro and Enterprise editions.

What are the most used virtualization software?

The most widely used virtualization software are:

VMware vSphere

Microsoft Hyper-V

Citrix XenServer

Oracle VirtualBox

Red Hat Virtualization (RHV)

Proxmox Virtual Environment

KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine)

AWS (Amazon Web Services)

Google Compute Engine

Alibaba Cloud Elastic Compute Service (ECS)

They are certainly the most popular. However, we will highlight those most commonly used in Windows environment. Previously, we talked about Hyper V. Therefore, we will start with Virtual Box.

Oracle Virtual Box

VirtualBox is a free and open-source virtualization software for x86 and AMD64/Intel64-based computers. It allows users to run multiple operating systems on a single physical machine. Also, each one in its own virtual environment. Moreover, providing isolation and security for each virtual machine. VirtualBox provides a user-friendly interface for creating, configuring and managing virtual machines.

In addition, including support for storage and network interfaces, and can be used for a wide range of purposes including software development, testing, and personal use. It can run on various host operating systems including Windows, macOS, Linux, and Solaris, and supports a wide range of guest operating systems including Windows, Linux, and BSD distributions.

VMware vSphere

VMware vSphere is a comprehensive enterprise-class virtualization platform. It provides a centralized management solution for virtual infrastructure. Moreover, it is used for creating, deploying and managing virtual machines, networks, and storage resources. With vSphere, IT organizations can pool and allocate shared resources to virtual machines and application. With this in mind, enabling efficient utilization of hardware resources, high availability, and disaster recovery.

vSphere includes features such as live migration of virtual machines, storage and network resource management, and multi-hypervisor support, as well as a robust security model and a powerful API for integration with other management tools. It is widely used in data centers and cloud environments for virtualizing business-critical applications, and is available as a standalone product or as part of the VMware Cloud Foundation, a unified SDDC platform for deploying and managing a hybrid cloud.

Very well, in this way we have seen what Virtual Machines are. We also check what are the advantages and disadvantages of using them. We also learned how they work. Furthermore, we saw which are the most used ones, plus what you need to run them on Windows.

In the previous post, we explained How to install KVM on Debian 10 / Ubuntu 20.04. Now it’s time to create a KVM Virtual Machine.

Creating a new KVM Virtual Machine on Debian 10 / Ubuntu 20.04

Creating a network bridge

Before creating a virtual machine, the following must be taken into account. A new network interface is created when installing KVMs. If you are going to test some systems this is enough, but if you want the virtual machine to be accessible from the whole network then you have to create a Bridge.

To do this, edit the interfaces file:

:~$ sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces

And add the following:

auto ens33
iface ens33 inet manual

auto br0
iface br0 inet static
address x.x.x.x
netmask x.x.x.x
network x.x.x.x
broadcast x.x.x.x
gateway x.x.x.x
bridge_ports ens33
bridge_stp off
bridge_fd 0
bridge_maxwait 0
dns-nameservers x.x.x.x

In my case, the physical network interface is ens33. Remember you can find out your network interface by typing:

:~$ ip addr

And the network parameters depend on each case. And you have to replace them with your own.

Save the changes, exit the editor, and reboot your computer.

In case you are doing this tutorial on a Debian 10 / Ubuntu 20.04 system that has a desktop environment installed, you can do it through the Network options. There the process is more intuitive and easier to do on GNOME, KDE, or Cinnamon.

Remember that this step is optional.

Creating the KVM Virtual Machine using Virt-Manager

Virt-Manager is a program that allows us from a graphic interface to create a KVM Virtual Machine. If you are using Debian with a desktop environment then this section of the tutorial is for you.

So, install it with the following command

:~$ sudo apt install virt-manager

And that’s it, the virtual machine will start.

8.- A KVM Virtual Machine running

Creating the KVM Virtual Machine from the terminal

Sure, the above step works if there is a desktop environment installed, but what if not? Well, you can also create it using the terminal.

To do this, you should create a folder where the files of this virtual machine will be. Inside this folder, you can create two more, one for the image and another for the storage.

:~$ mkdir -p virtual/{iso,storage}

In that ISO folder should be the image of the operating system you want to install in the virtual machine. Remember that using the wget command you can get one.

And now the command that creates the virtual machine is this:

:~$ sudo virt-install --name [name] --os-type linux --os-variant [linux-distribution] --ram [size] --vcpu [number] --disk path=[path]/[name].qcow2,size=10 --graphics vnc,listen=0.0.0.0 --noautoconsole --hvm --cdrom [path] --boot cdrom,hd

Remember to change the values in [] to the ones that are right for you.

If there is no error in the screen output, it means that the machine has been successfully created.

To access it, use a VNC client and use your IP address and port 0.

Conclusion

KVM is a wonderful technology that allows you to create virtual machines quickly. Whether using a graphical interface or the terminal the result is the same.

Hello! It is well known the approach that Microsoft has had lately with GNU/Linux. In fact, here we have talked about enabling the Windows Subsystem for Linux. This interesting option allows you to run an Ubuntu shell or another distro without leaving Windows. Besides, we show you how to install Ubuntu 20.04.1 in Windows using Hyper-V. That is, through the virtualization platform developed by Microsoft. Today we will continue using virtualization. However, it will be through a different perspective. Since we will be using Multipass. Which is a lightweight, multi-platform VM administrator (works for Linux, Windows and macOS). In addition, it allows the developer to run the necessary version of Ubuntu in a virtual machine. On the other hand, Multipass independently extracts the necessary image from the operating system and keeps it updated. Well, today we will see how to install Ubuntu on Windows 10 using Multipass.

Prerequisites

This method makes use of virtualization. For this reason it is necessary to have a processor that supports this technology. Additionally, it is essential to have Hyper-V enabled or to install VirtualBox.

How to download Multipass.

As mentioned above, this cloud-based installation is multi-platform. Therefore, the first thing you have to do is go to this link and download the executable file for Windows. Once you have downloaded the file, just run it as any Windows executable.

Starting the installation of Multipass in Windows 10

After accepting the license, it is necessary to select which hypervisor you will use. As mentioned, you can use either Hyper-V or Virtualbox.

Selected the hypervisor

Now the wizard offers to add Multipass to the path. This is very important because it allows you to run the instance without having to type in the full installation address.

Adding Multipass to the path

Now select the installation location.

Then choose the components to be installed.

Choose the components to be installed.

Once the previous step is completed, the installation will begin. Wait a few moments while the work is completed.

Completing the installation of Multipass in Windows 10

Running and configuring Multipass for Ubuntu.

Once the installation is complete, it is time to run Multipass for the first time. With this intention, go to the home menu and click on Multipass.

Launching Multipass

This action will launch Multipass. To launch the shell please right-click on the icon in the taskbar and click on Open Shell.

Hello, how are you? Today we will see how the practical use of the Hyper-V platform. In fact, in previous posts we have seen how to enable this feature. Both in Windows 10 and Windows Server. Please remember that Hyper-V is Microsoft’s bet to virtualize systems. Therefore, it is possible to enable it on Windows Server and some versions of Windows 10. Well, today we will detail how to use it to virtualize systems. Specifically Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. This GNU/Linux operating system developed by Canonical comes with a support of 05 years. So today we will see how to install Ubuntu 20.04.1 on Windows Server/10 using Hyper-V.

The importance of a virtualization platform like Hyper-V

We have previously highlighted the importance of using a virtualization environment. Indeed, at the level of Windows Server it represents a great advantage. It allows you to test systems and apps in a secure environment. Since any failure or error would not represent a threat to the system or its users. Within a corporate environment, it is a great security measure. Likewise, domestic and professional users can test new systems. Or even polish apps without fear of damaging the main system. Well, in this post we will use Hyper-V from Windows Server 2019. However, the process is very similar in Windows 10. Therefore, you can use the steps for both systems.

Installing Ubuntu on Windows Server using Hyper-V

In today’s post we will see how to install Ubuntu in a virtual machine step by step. In the first place you must download the image from this link. Then press Win+Q and type Hyper-V to launch the manager.

Launching Hyper-V manager

As this is the first time the tool is launched, you can see that there are no virtual machines created. Therefore, we are going to create the first one. With this in mind, select the server or machine. Next New>Virtual Machine

Creating a new virtual machine.

Configuring the virtual machine.

An assistant will be launched immediately. You can press Finish to create a virtual machine with default values. Or you can press Next to customize the settings. In this case, press Next to continue.

It is then time to specify the name of the new virtual machine. It is also possible to set the location of the virtual machine. When you are ready, press Next to continue.

Please specify the name and location of the virtual machine.

Hyper-V offers two generations of virtual machine configuration. Generation 1 is for older installations. Generation 2 offers features for more modern machines. You can choose any of them according to your needs.

Please select the generation to create the virtual machine for Ubuntu

Assigning Ubuntu installation values in Hyper-V.

Now it is time to specify the amount of ram memory intended for the virtual machine. By default, the wizard assigns the recommended minimum to run the system. However, it is recommended to assign a little more so that everything flows smoothly. On the other hand, this amount will also depend on the amount of physical ram memory the computer has. In addition, the platform provides the option of using dynamic ram memory. That is, beyond the assigned memory, Hyper-V assigns memory according to the needs of the virtual machine.

Assigning ram memory for the Ubuntu virtual machine

Then configure the network connectivity. That is, if you want to enable the Internet connection, please enable the physical network device to act as a switch.

Configuring the network connection

Now it’s time to configure the virtual hard disk. The wizard offers 3 options. The first one is to create a new disk with its assigned size. Besides that you can use a previously created virtual hard disk. Finally, you have an option to assign a virtual disk later.

Configuring a virtual disk for Ubuntu installation

This point you have to configure the values for the Ubuntu installation. That is, the source to boot the system. In this case, we will use the previously downloaded ISO.

<img loading="lazy" width="704" height="533" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ubu9.png" alt="Select the downloaded ISO to load Ubuntu.
Virtualization is a widely used technology today. Indeed, it is possible to test operating systems and applications without mounting them in a productive environment. In this way, any error or failure does not harm the host system. Well, Windows Server has its own virtualization manager. This service is known as Hyper V. As a result, this role allows multiple machines to run on one. Therefore, it is possible to evaluate operating systems and applications without additional costs. So in this post we will see how to install Hyper-V on Windows Server 2019.

How to install Hyper-V Windows Server 2019 from Server Manager.

Hyper-V is developed as a virtualization technology which is based on hypervisor. Consequently, it uses the Windows hypervisor, which in turn requires a physical processor. It is essential that this processor has the virtualization technology. To activate and install it, from the Server Manager click on Add Roles and Features.

Adding Roles and Features

Press Next to continue.

How to install Hyper-V in Windows Server 2019 from PowerShell

On the other hand, it is possible to install this role on the server using PowerShell. With this intention, open a PowerShell with administrator privileges and run the following command:

Install-WindowsFeature -Name Hyper-V -IncludeManagementTools

Installing Hyper-V with PowerShell

Installing Hyper-V using DISM

Deployment Image Servicing and Management is a tool integrated into the server with which we manage the system images. It also allows, to install Hyper-V. To use this method, you need to open a PowerShell as an administrator and run the following command:

dism /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:Microsoft-Hyper-V /All

Installing Hyper-V using DISM

In any case, you have to restart the server to see the established changes. Ultimately we have seen how to install Hyper-V on Windows Server. In addition, we studied the graphic mode and through PowerShell. All right, that’s it for now. Bye!

Hi, how do you do? Today we will continue to explore the possibilities of using Windows 10. Specifically, we will continue to explore virtualization. Certainly, Windows 10 has a native application to virtualized systems. As a matter of fact, here at googez.com, we have done a tutorial on how to enable and use Hyper V in Windows 10. However, there are also other options that allow you to virtualize operating systems. VirtualBox is virtualization software for x86/amd64 architectures. Through this application, it is possible to install additional operating systems, known as “guest systems,” into another “host” operating system, each with its own virtual environment. And today I will show you how to install and configure VirtualBox on Windows 10.

Downloading VirtualBox

To download the latest stable version of VirtualBox, we have to go to its official site, and in the Downloads section, go to the Windows hosts section to download the latest version.

Oracle VirtualBox official download site

Once downloaded the file, we run it to start the installation.

Starting VirtualBox installation

In the box will appear the features to be installed with the required disk space. Similarly, we can select the location of the installation.

Selecting the features to be installed

Next, we will choose options regarding the direct accesses granted to the program.

Selecting which shortcut wants to be installed.

A warning sign will indicate that when continuing with the installation, the connection to the network will be reset and therefore we will disconnect from the Internet. A warning sign will indicate that when continuing with the installation, the connection to the network will be reset and therefore we will disconnect from the Internet. As it is a temporary situation, press yes to continue the installation.

The connection to the network will be interrupted for a few moments

Finally, we are ready to install VirtualBox

Installing VirtualBox on Windows 10

The installation wizard will start and you just have to wait for it to do its job.

Finally, the installation has concluded and only remains to run the program.

The installation has been completed

Setting a virtual machine on VirtualBox

At the moment of launching the program, a welcome box will jump, from where we are going to configure a virtual machine. With this in mind, press New to open the installation wizard.

VirtualBox screen welcome

In the following box, the initial configurations of the window machine must be placed. As the name we will give it, the folder to use, the type of operating system and which version will be installed. In this particular case, we select as name lubuntu, in type Linux, and in version Ubuntu (64-bit).

Configuring Name and operating system. Press Next to continue

Next, we will allocate the amount of ram memory for the virtual machine. As Lubuntu is a very light system, 1024 MB will be enough to run it.

Setting the amount of RAM memory

In the following boxes we are going to configure everything related to the hard disk. Select the default option to create a new virtual hard disk.

Select the default option to create a new virtual hard disk

Choose which type of hard disk wants to install

Next, we choose the storage mode between dynamically allocated and fixed size. Select what you want according to the system.

Finally, it only remains to assign the size of the virtual hard disk.

Setting location and size of virtual hard disk

Setting storage to load an ISO image of the OS to run.

When the configuration of the virtual machine has finished, we will see a dashboard with all the configurations. In order to successfully boot the new machine, we need to click on storage.

Selecting storage in order to run the ♣OS Iso

Once there, we need to follow the next route: Storage devices>Empty>Optical Drive to choose the location when iso is located

Selecting ISO in order to run the new virtual machine

After all, the machine is ready to start. Just press Start in the manager and wait while the process starts. Finally, we can see how Lubuntu is running on Windows 10 through VirtualBox.

VirtualBox running Lubuntu 18.04 on Windows 10.

In conclusion, I would like to say that VirtualBox is an excellent tool in order to run virtual machines on Windows 10. Please note that it does not have full compatibility with Hyper V, so if you have it already installed, there will be operational problems. For this reason, we recommend uninstalling Hyper V before installing VirtualBox.

Hello! It is good to be with you again! In this opportunity, we are going to talk to you about virtualization. It refers to the creation of a virtual resource such as a server, desktop, operating system, file, storage or network. This term is most commonly associated with the ability to run several operating systems simultaneously on a single computer. In addition, the different operating systems behave uniquely, running with their files and libraries and remaining disconnected from the host computer. This is called a virtual machine.

There are many reasons to use virtualization. For the average user, the ability to use tools made for different operating systems without having to change computers or reboot into another system. On the other hand, The server administrators offer them the opportunity to run different operating systems within the same server. In addition, this flexibility allows for offering different alternatives, depending on the particular needs of each user. Meanwhile, there are different options in the market to achieve this, such as Virtualbox and Vmware. However, Windows 10 comes with a native tool to virtualize machine, called Hyper V. In this post we will see how to enable it and also how to configure it to run our first virtual machine.

Prerequisites

First of all, we must know that this feature is available only for Pro versions of windows, so if you are a user of a Home version, you can not run it. To verify which version of windows you use, press windows+R, type winver, and press enter.

Windows 10 version is Pro. Capable to run Hyper V

On the other hand, we have to check if the processor supports the virtualization feature. Anyway, However, if we continue with the procedure and our processor does not support virtualization, then the installer will not let it continue.

Enabling Hyper V feature.

Once the prerequisites are verified, we will proceed to enable the hyper v feature. If you don’t know how to do it, please check our tutorial. For that, we have to go to the Enable Features in Windows 10. If you don’t know how to do it, please check our tutorial. Once there, select Hyper V, press OK and wait for it to be installed. The system will ask you to reboot it.

Using Hyper V

In order to start Hyper V service, we type in the search bar Hyper until Hyper Manager appears and do click on it.

Selecting Hyper V Manager

Next, the main program window will appear and we are going to select Connect to server to start a new virtual machine.

The main window from Hyper V Manager

In the next window, select Local computer.

Select local computer in order to connect to the virtualization server

Then, select New, and Virtual Machine to invoke the configuration wizard.

Creating a new virtual machine

Ok, now we will configure our virtual machine, in this case, we will install Lubuntu 18.04. Obviously, we need to have the iso already downloaded

Configuring Virtual Machine step by step

Step 1. Press Next to start the configuration wizard.

Press Next to start the configuration wizard.

Step 2. Specify the name and location of our virtual machine. In my case, the name will be Lubuntu and the location will be the default.

Assigning a name and location to the virtual machine

Step 3. Choose the generation to the virtual machine. According to the needs of the system to install, then we can select either of the options offered. In my case, I choose Generation 1.

Choose the generation of the virtual machine

Step 4. In the following box, we allocate the amount of memory for the virtual machine. It is recommended to assign more than the minimum that the system needs to run. In my case, I assign 2024 mebagytes

Assigning memory

Step 5. Configure networking. We can choose between connecting to the switch or staying disconnected. Select Default Switch.

Configure networking

Step 6. Connect Virtual Disk. In order to install an operating system is necessary to allocate storage to do it. We can modify the options as we want, or we can leave them by default

Connect Virtual Hard Disk

Step7. Installation options. This is an important step since we are going to select the image of the operating system that we want to install. With this intention, select Install an operating system from a bootable CD/DVD-ROM, => Media=>Image file (.iso) and browse to the image file location. Press Next to continue.
