Hello! Both personally and at work, we must have as much control as possible over our email messages. To do so, we can make use of various platforms and applications. Especially those designed for this task. We will now talk about a couple of very interesting proposals. Nothing more and nothing less than Vivaldi Mail and Thunderbird. There are certainly many options for managing emails. However, today we are going to compare the two that are the strongest in this market so that we can know which one is the best. Read on to see Vivaldi Mail vs. Thunderbird.

Main differences and similarities between Vivaldi Mail and Thunderbird

First of all let’s talk about the less known option: Vivaldi Mail. It is a powerful mail manager with multiple functions for the treatment of this element. It also includes other very interesting additions. Actually this tool is part of the Vivaldi browser. Therefore, we can use this software to move around the Internet. At the same time we will be able to have an integrated mail manager to keep up to date with our messages.

For many users, this can become a very interesting advantage over Thunderbird. We say this because the second option is an independent program that focuses on mail. It is also exciting to know that Vivaldi’s proposal allows us to use all types of email accounts, just like Thunderbird. That is, we will be able to manage Gmail, iCloud, POP3, Outlook, or IMAP accounts. In short, in both managers, we will have the possibility of using multiple types of accounts.

Moreover, in both programs, we will have the possibility of using and configuring several of these accounts simultaneously. However, we must take into consideration that the e-mail service integrated in the browser is deactivated by default. Therefore, to use it first we must activate it from its configuration window, as it happens with the calendar.

Vivalvi mail aims to prioritize the different views we can have of our mails. Even above the use of folders. Thunderbird offers a fully customizable user interface. This way we will be able to locate messages more quickly based on our preferences.

Additional Thunderbird features

In addition to being able to manage our mail from this application, it offers other interesting functions for day-to-day use.

Master password access.

Digital signature and email encryption.

Password manager.

Calendar.

Social networks and RSS monitoring.

Installation of extensions and add-ons.

Simultaneous use of multiple email accounts.

Complete contact management.

Use of several profiles in the application.

Search tools.

Message storage.

Main features of Vivaldi Mail

Perhaps its most attractive feature is that it is part of the Vivaldi browser. This is a software that is characterized by the great possibilities it allows you to customize it. Now let’s see the additional functions that it offers us in its mail manager.

Integrated calendar.

Management of multiple simultaneous accounts.

Different views for personal emails.

Searches saved as filters.

Event management in messages.

RSS reader and news feeds.

Own translation service.

Which email manager is best

There is no doubt that the number of features, both usability and aesthetics, available for the moment is greater in Thunderbird. But we cannot forget that this is a much older software than the Vivaldi mail service. Therefore, those who want more functionality will probably end up choosing Thunderbird. However, new features are expected for Vivaldi Mail. In addition, regular users of the browser will feel more comfortable using a fully integrated option.

In fact, one of the biggest disadvantages we find in Thunderbird is that it is an independent software from our default browser. Therefore, to move around the Internet and manage our mail, we need to have both applications open simultaneously. We could say that Thunderbird is a more complete and advanced project to manage our mail. However, Vivaldi Mail has room for improvement and is a manager who looks excellent. Bye!

Email clients are the software that allows easier management of your email directly from your desktop, instead of opening a browser and logging into your account. In fact, email clients are more efficient in terms of faster response and usability. In Linux, you can easily get one of the most popular Linux clients and enjoy the easy management of your business or everyday deals.

Let’s take a look at the best email clients for your Linux distro.

Thunderbird

It is one of the most popular email clients for everyone. Developed and maintained by Mozilla, Thunderbird offers the best possible experience one can ask for – for free!

Some of the cool features of Thunderbird are –

Custom, personalized email address

One-click address book

Tabs and search

Web searching

Activity manager

Message archive

Automated updates

We’ve already discussed about backing up Thunderbird profile and enjoying Arc theme on Thunderbird.

Mailspring

This is a next-gen email client that’s developed using open web techs. The user interface is really modern and slick. There are 2 versions of Mailspring – Free and Pro. The free version is more than enough for everyday users. However, the Pro version targets only for professionals and/or business organizations.

Some of the core Mailspring features include –

Unified inbox – all the email from different email providers in one inbox

Enhanced contact management

Snooze, schedule emails

Improved privacy & security with PGP

Analytics and tracking

Translator buil-in

Geary

It’s a nice, open-source email client that’s primarily developed for GNOME project. However, it’s available in Flathub. That means, if your system has Flatpak installed, you can easily enjoy Geary, no need to follow any complex installation method.

Some features of Geary –

Easy integration with all the popular email providers

Nice integration with system

Note that as Geary is a part of the GNOME system, it’ll provide the best possible experience if your desktop is running GNOME desktop environment.

Evolution

It’s another awesome email client from GNOME project. Evolution is much like Geary, except a few additional features and interface changes.

Core features of Evolution –

Contact management

Task management

Notes

Filter & folders

Plugins

For getting Evolution, you need to build it from source. Worry not; GNOME project explains installation of Evolution through Flatpak.

Sylpheed

In the case of every Linux user, Thunderbird is obviously a familiar software. It’s an email client that is available for free and accessible to users from all platform – Windows, Linux, and macOS etc. This is my everyday tool for managing all the connections and keeping things organized. Moreover, I can also take a backup of Thunderbird profile for future usage.

Did you know that you can theme your Thunderbird? Theming is one of the best ways to customize your system and enjoy the best possible look. It’s true that you can easily go to the Thunderbird Add-ons and get your favorite theme. However, one of the most popular themes in the world is obviously the Arc theme. Let’s take a look how you’ll have to install it in your system.

Downloading the theme

Building up programs from the source, especially from the GitHub is obviously difficult for everyday users, right? Thanks to the devs, they already provide pre-compiled XPI file available for installing into your Thunderbird.

Download the Arc theme XPI.

Installing the theme

For installing the XPI, follow these steps.

Go to “Add-ons”.

From the left panel, select the “Appearance” tab.

From the “Gear” icon, select “Install Add-on From File”.

Browse for the XPI file and select “Open”.

Thunderbird is another popular software as an email client. It’s cross-platform, open-source and really powerful for using at the enterprise level. As it’s free, companies are more interested in integrating this client into their workspaces. As a professional, I also use Thunderbird as my email client on my desktop. If you’re a Thunderbird user, you already know how this software saves time & increases productivity at the same time.

Thunderbird, like most other software, doesn’t have any built-in function for backing up the data. You have to reconnect your email every time you reinstall your OS. There are also other reasons that require taking a backup of Thunderbird profile.

If you’re on Linux, there’s a big chance that you’re already using Thunderbird or have it installed on your system. It’s one of the best email clients for every purpose. Let’s take a look how to backup Thunderbird profile and restore it when needed. This way, you can ensure the hassle-free usage of your favorite app even after reinstalling OS.

Backing up the profile

Thunderbird saves its profile under “~/.thunderbird” folder. We’ll make a compressed archive of the folder as the backup. Before proceeding, make sure that Thunderbird isn’t running.

Now, open a terminal and run the following command:

tar -jcvf thunderbird-email-profile.tar.bz2 .thunderbird

For convenience, I’ll be moving the backup file to “Desktop”.

mv thunderbird-email-profile.tar.bz2 .thunderbird

Restoring the profile

For restoring the profile, run these commands. Make sure to move the compressed file into “/” directory beforehand.

rm -rf ~/.thunderbird
tar -xvf thunderbird-email-profile.tar.bz2

Encrypting the backup

If you want to ensure tighter security for your backup so that no one gets their hand on it, you can encrypt it really easily, as you’re on Linux. Learn how to encrypt the file(s) on Linux.
