No doubt there are many terminal emulators on the market. However, you can hardly get one as original as eDEX-UI. In fact, everything in this project is very original. Since this free and open source emulator is really amazing. In the first place, it is not only a common terminal. Since the visual aspect is really attractive. Since it looks like something out of a science fiction movie. Indeed, its creators are inspired by the movie Tron Legacy. Even, at the time of boot, the app has a startup sequence with sound effects included. However, the surprises do not end there, as it includes a practical on-screen keyboard. But in my opinion, the most striking thing is that it includes a complete system monitor. It shows a lot of hardware information in real time. Come with me to see eDEX-UI: A cross-platform terminal with a cool graphic interface.

eDEX-UI is a terminal emulator with a strange name but full of interesting features.

Actually, the whole aspect of the terminal is very interesting. However, the system monitor is very complete. It shows date and time, information about the hardware, resource consumption, network traffic, running processes, and a perfectly functional directory viewer. GNU/Linux users have multiple graphic options to monitor the computer. Such as Conky or I-Nex. However, in Windows this is not as common or easy to use. But in addition, eDEX-UI includes several themes to modify the visual aspect. And as mentioned, it includes great sound effects. These appear when the terminal is launched and while it is being used as well.

eDEX-UI running on Windows 10 with Tron theme

How to install and use eDEX-UI

This open source project is hosted by GitHub. Therefore, you just need to download it from the project site. However, there is no need to compile it, since its maintainers offer an executable file for Windows 10. After downloading, you just need to install it like any other program for Windows. At the time of launching it, the emulator has a very striking startup sequence with welcome more sound effects included. Although it is usually new at first, you may want to remove it later. And this can be done from the settings screen. To do this, just press the combination Ctrl+Shift+S.

EDEX-UI settings.

As you can see there are many configurations. For example, you can choose other themes.

eDEX-UI running Matrix theme.

At the level of customization, the program allows you to modify many things. For example, remove the welcome screen and sound effects. Additionally, change the font, text size, enable a window mode, hide the keyboard from the screen, etc. In addition, there is a guide on the wiki about customization that includes even CSS injection.

Conclusion

We are definitely in front of a terminal emulator very different from the rest. Because apart from the options shown, it allows you to select the terminal that will be used. In addition, it is possible to run several terminal windows. From now on, you only have to use it to discover more features. I hope you enjoyed this look about eDEX-UI: A cross-platform terminal with a cool graphic interface.

The terminal emulator is one of the most controversial applications in Linux. On one hand, there are the novices who do not want to know anything about it, but on the other hand, there are the more experienced users who see it as a very efficient tool to perform certain tasks. There are many good emulators, but in this post, I will talk about Alacritty that is the fastest terminal emulator for Linux.

What is Alacritty terminal emulator?

According to Github’s project profile, Alacritty is a multi-platform terminal emulator with a special focus on performance and simplicity. This makes it quite comfortable to work with, especially if you have modern computers.

Alacritty the fastest terminal emulator for Linux

How does Alacritty get so fast? Well, because it relies on the computer GPU to perform slightly more complex tasks. This makes performance soar by far.

This is why the project claims that it is the fastest terminal emulator available.

Also, Alacritty is cross-platform which makes it available to many Linux distributions quickly and easily. It is also available for MacOS, BSD and Windows.

Another important aspect of Alacritty is that it’s open source released under the terms of the Apache 2.0 license so we won’t have problems using it and seeing the source code.

Installing Alacritty on Linux

Fortunately, Alacritty is available for several Linux distributions in a simple way because they include it in their repositories or there are packages already built for them.

For Linux Arch and derivatives:

:~$ sudo pacman -S alacritty

If you use Alpine Linux:

:~$ apk add alacritty

For Fedora, on the other hand, it is sufficient to use these two commands:

:~$ sudo dnf copr enable pschyska/alacritty
:~$ sudo dnf install alacritty

If you are an OpenSUSE Tumbleweed user, just run it:

:~$ sudo zypper in alacritty

In the case of Ubuntu 18.04 and Linux Mint 19 you have to add an extra repository and then install it:

:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mmstick76/alacritty
:~$ sudo apt update
:~$ sudo apt install alacritty

Also, you can find the binaries on Github. In my case, I downloaded the DEB file and then I installed using gdebi.

:~$ sudo gdebi Downloads/Alacritty-v0.4.1-ubuntu_18_04_amd64.deb

Whatever distribution was used, we’ll use it now

Using Alacritty terminal emulator

After you install it, don’t run it, because we have to copy the default configuration of the application. It’s in YML format and you can download it from here.

Then, you have to copy the file to the following location:

$HOME/.config/alacritty/

And there copy the file alacritty.yml

The configuration file is quite simple and explicit and you can modify it to your liking. However, be careful with spaces and syntax.

Now we can run Alacritty from the main menu.

And that is it.

Conclusion

There are no secrets with Alacritty. It’s a normal emulator like what we’ve used before. However, it is quite fast and very comfortable to use because of its impressive performance.

So you’ve got to get the most out of this program.

Terminal is the heart and soul of any Linux system. Using it, you can perform all the complex and difficult tasks. All you need is a proper understanding of the commands you’re giving input and decipher what the output means.

Working with the terminal can be pretty boring in cases. The reason is, it’s the legitimate command line interface. That’s why there are a number of available terminal emulators that can add the difference in the working environment and gift you a less boring, more focusing environment.

Are you tired of the default terminal emulator? Today, let’s change the terminal emulator to a different one!

Changing terminal emulator

Before you can change the default terminal emulator, you need to have at least one more to switch to. Don’t worry; feel free to check out some of the most popular terminal emulators for the Linux platform.

Installed your favorite one(s)? Good then, time to make the switch!

Fire up the current terminal emulator –

In my case, it’s the Xfce4-terminal.

Now, run the following command –

sudo update-alternatives --config x-terminal-emulator

You’ll be presented with a list of all the available terminal emulator(s) on your system. Depending on your installed terminal emulators, the list will vary. If you don’t have any, you’ll be told so.

My favorite one is Konsole – the terminal emulator of KDE Plasma. For making the switch, enter the number of your target emulator –

The switch is complete. Now, exit the current terminal emulator –

exit

Verifying the result

Press “Ctrl + Alt + T” or whatever shortcut you’ve decided to fire up the terminal –

Voila! The change is successful!

Linux is quite powerful because of the powerful terminal facility in it. The terminal is the ultimate tool that can be used to perform literally everything. However, the default terminal can be boring or scary sometimes. For devs, it’s quite nice to have access to the terminal and the project development window at the same instance. If that’s the case, then Upterm is the perfect choice for you.

However, Upterm isn’t available just like any regular software distribution method. It has to be installed pretty differently. Moreover, after installation, you have to integrate the shortcut of this app to your system. But worry not, as you’re in the right place to perform all the tasks very efficiently.

Download Upterm

Upterm is available on the official Upterm GitHub page. Download the AppImage version of Upterm.

Installation procedure

When the download is complete, don’t double-click and run the file. It’s because of the file system (AppImage). All the app files will be extracted to the folder. If you open the file in “Downloads” directory, it’ll extract all files there and will create a big mess.

First, create a directory. Here, I’m creating a folder in my system. Feel free to create the file anywhere, but not recommended. I recommend creating a hidden folder. This way, you won’t accidentally end up deleting or modifying the folder.

Run these commands:

sudo mkdir ~/.Upterm

cd ~/Downloads
sudo mv upterm-0.4.3-x86_64-linux.AppImage ~/.Upterm

Now, add file permission for read/write to the folder.

sudo chmod +x upterm-0.4.3-x86_64-linux.AppImage

The final step would be running this command:

./upterm-0.4.3-x86_64-linux.AppImage

Click “Yes”. Now, Upterm is available from your “Apps” menu.

How to uninstall Upterm

For uninstalling Upterm, follow these steps.

Delete the program shortcut.

Delete the AppImage.

cd ~/.upterm
rm *

Delete the folder.

Now, Upterm should be disappeared from your system.

For Arch users

The method described above will work on most of the Linux distros. However, for installing Upterm as a native app on Arch Linux, you have to do it via AUR. Here’s how to do it.

Get the “git” package of Upterm.

sudo pacman -S git

Clone Upterm PKGBUILD file.

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/upterm.git

Navigate to the downloaded folder.

cd upterm

Build & install Upterm.

makepkg -si

For uninstalling Upterm, run this command:

sudo pacman -R upterm

Done! Enjoy Upterm.

For Linux, the terminal is the most important part of performing useful tasks. The terminal is a console that uses the CLI (Command Line Interface). If you’re a Linux user, you must have used it for quite a few times, right? The complexity of the console/terminal is quite scary for many of us. If you’re one of them, don’t worry. There are different terminal emulator available for Linux.

Take a note that terminal emulators make the interface easier with customizations and tweaks. You have to understand the basic commands and how they work. It’s the command that is crucial, not the interface. If you run wrong commands or make any unexpected changes to the system, you’ll face serious troubles with your system, no matter what terminal emulator you use.

Well, let’s take a look at the best terminal emulators for Linux users.

Sakura

If you’re looking for a lightweight and powerful terminal emulator, Sakura is the right choice. Unlike GNOME Terminal & Konsole, Sakura has a very few dependencies whereas Konsole & GNOME Terminal would bring in a big chunk of GNOME and KDE.

Sakura allows custom configuration of almost all the settings by right-clicking on the option, for example, tab labels, size, the default number of tabs, fonts, bells etc. If you’re an adventurous user, try personalizing the configuration file “~/.config/sakura/sakura.conf”.

Get Sakura.

Xiki

Xiki is a nice terminal emulator developed by Craig Muth. It’s not just a terminal emulator, it also focuses on increasing the reach and speed of your CLI.

If you’re not much experienced with command shells, Xiki will make your life a lot easier. There are plenty on-screen help texts available. Using keyboard or mouse, you can navigate through Xiki a lot faster than the traditional, built-in terminal.

Get Xiki.

ROXTerm

It’s another nice lightweight emulator. Its interface design is similar to GNOME Terminal. The original development of this terminal was to have smaller footprints and faster startup time by not using the GNOME libraries & using an independent applet. However, over the time of its course, it’s designed to support a higher range of features for power users.

It’s a good choice for an intermediate user. With more customizability than GNOME Terminal, ROXTerm is a very decent choice.

Get ROXTerm.

LXTerminal

It’s the default terminal emulator for LXDE (Lightweight X Desktop Environment). LXTerminal is VTE-based. It includes all the common features like multiple tabs, general commands, theming etc. It’s a nice terminal emulator for both noobs and pros.

Xfce4 terminal

Xfce is my most favorite desktop environment of all. The simplicity, lightweight and customizability make it a very good choice. Xfce4 terminal is a pretty handsome console choice it that sense. It’s a modern and easy-to-use terminal emulator specifically designed for Xfce desktop, but also available for Ubuntu and Fedora. Check out this link for installing Xfce4 terminal on Ubuntu and Fedora.

Its feature includes search dialog, tab color changer, drop-down console etc. Get Xfce4 terminal.

QTerminal
