<p>Hello, how are you? File synchronization is a convenient way to access information from anywhere. In fact, with only an internet connection is possible to access data, without being physically in front of the device. Additionally, technological giants such as Google and Microsoft offer their own tools for synchronizing files. However, an essential feature of secure synchronization is privacy. For this reason, some users are reluctant to trust their personal information to the servers of these companies. That´s why today we are going to talk about Syncthing. It is an OpenSource application that enables you to synchronize folders between different devices. In addition, it allows you to select folders to share and synchronize with other devices. Well, in this post we are going to see how to install Syncthing on Windows 10.</p>

<h2>Prerequisites</h2>

<p>In order to enjoy synchronization between two computers, it is imperative that both have the program installed. On the other hand, obviously, both computers must be turned on and connected to the network.</p>

<h2>Downloading Sycthing.</h2>

<p>As we mentioned earlier, this is a multiplatform program. Obviously, it also has its version for Windows. To download the latest version, please go to the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="download (opens in a new tab)" href="https://syncthing.net/downloads/" target="_blank">download</a> section of the official website:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="730" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn.jpg" alt="Download the version of Windows corresponding to the architecture of your pc." class="wp-image-16749" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn-300x214.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn-768x548.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn-696x496.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn-589x420.jpg 589w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Download the version of Windows corresponding to the architecture of your pc.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Once downloaded the application, proceed to decompress the file. It then executes the executable file. Forthwith, a window will appear indicating that the program is being installed. Additionally, you will have to allow the connection of the program through the Windows Firewall.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="728" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn3.jpg" alt="Start of Syncthing installation. Please allow connection through Windows Firewall." class="wp-image-16752" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn3.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn3-300x213.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn3-768x546.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn3-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn3-696x495.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn3-591x420.jpg 591w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Start of Syncthing installation. Please allow connection through Windows Firewall.</figcaption></figure>

<p>After these initial settings, it is very likely that the program&#8217;s web interface will open. If not, manually enter this address in the web browser: <strong>http://localhost:8384/</strong>.</p>

<h2>Configuring Sycthing</h2>

<p>Once the program&#8217;s graphical web interface is opened, the wizard will ask for authorization to send anonymous statistics.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="728" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn4.jpg" alt="Allow the use of anonymous data" class="wp-image-16753" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn4.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn4-300x213.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn4-768x546.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn4-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn4-696x495.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn4-591x420.jpg 591w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Allow the use of anonymous data</figcaption></figure>

<p>After completing the previous step, the program&#8217;s graphical web interface will appear. There you can see the address of the folder to share and its statistics. Also, at the moment this folder is not shared. On the other hand, the right menu shows the current device and remote devices. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="728" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn5.jpg" alt="Synchting Dashboard" class="wp-image-16756" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn5.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn5-300x213.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn5-768x546.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn5-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn5-696x495.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn5-591x420.jpg 591w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Synchting Dashboard</figcaption></figure>

<h2>Adding a remote device</h2>

<p>We have commented that in order to synchronize two devices, it is necessary to have the program installed in both. Well, this connection is made through a unique network identifier, generated by the program. To display the device ID, please enter the action menu located in the upper right corner of the page.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="728" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn6.jpg" alt="Showing the unique identifier." class="wp-image-16759" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn6.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn6-300x213.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn6-768x546.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn6-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn6-696x495.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn6-591x420.jpg 591w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Showing the unique identifier.</figcaption></figure>

<p>The device identifier will then be displayed in numeric form and also as QR code.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="730" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/de.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-16760" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/de.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/de-300x214.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/de-768x548.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/de-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/de-696x496.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/de-589x420.jpg 589w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Showing the unique identifier</figcaption></figure>

<p>After knowing the identifier of the device you want to add, please enter the menu <strong>Add a remote device.</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="728" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn7.jpg" alt="Adding a remote device." class="wp-image-16761" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn7.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn7-300x213.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn7-768x546.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn7-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn7-696x495.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn7-591x420.jpg 591w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Adding a remote device.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Immediately a window will be displayed, where you have to enter the unique identifier generated. It is also possible to assign a name to the connected device. Press save to set the changes.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="728" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn8.jpg" alt="Entering the data from the remote device." class="wp-image-16762" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn8.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn8-300x213.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn8-768x546.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn8-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn8-696x495.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn8-591x420.jpg 591w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Entering the data from the remote device.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Back to the previous screen, the folder remains unshared and the remote device is unused. This happens because Sycthing has to be restarted in order to sync correctly. The program should do it automatically, otherwise force the restart manually. With this intention, go back to the actions menu and click on restart.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="728" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn9.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-16763" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn9.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn9-300x213.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn9-768x546.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn9-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn9-696x495.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn9-591x420.jpg 591w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Restarting Sycthing</figcaption></figure>

<p>Please remember to repeat the same procedure on the remote device.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="730" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/dede.jpg" alt="Adding a new computer to the remote device." class="wp-image-16764" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/dede.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/dede-300x214.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/dede-768x548.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/dede-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/dede-696x496.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/dede-589x420.jpg 589w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Adding a new computer to the remote device.</figcaption></figure>

<h2>Sharing the folder.</h2>

<p>Syncthing by default does not share folders. So in order to activate it, it is necessary to edit the parameters of the remote device. With this intention, press the Edit command. Then go to the Sharing tab and check the box corresponding to Sharing Folders with the Device. Click on save to set the changes and restart the program.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="728" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn11.jpg" alt="Share folders" class="wp-image-16767" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn11.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn11-300x213.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn11-768x546.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn11-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn11-696x495.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn11-591x420.jpg 591w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Share folders</figcaption></figure>

<p>Once again repeat the same steps on the remote device.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="730" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/deded-1.jpg" alt="Set to share folders on the remote device." class="wp-image-16769" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/deded-1.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/deded-1-300x214.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/deded-1-768x548.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/deded-1-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/deded-1-696x496.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/deded-1-589x420.jpg 589w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Set to share folders on the remote device.</figcaption></figure>

<p>After the servers are configured, then both the folder and the remote device are correctly updated.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="728" src="//1723336065.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn12-1.jpg" alt="Syncthing running correctly" class="wp-image-16772" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn12-1.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn12-1-300x213.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn12-1-768x546.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn12-1-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn12-1-696x495.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/syn12-1-591x420.jpg 591w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Syncthing running correctly</figcaption></figure>

<h2>Conclusion</h2>

<p>In the end, we have seen how to install Syncthing on Windows 10. After configuring it correctly, you can now synchronize files safely. In addition, this program does not use external servers and provides data encryption. So it is an option for users. I say goodbye and invite you to review our post about <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Plesk (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.osradar.com/how-to-install-plesk-obsidian-on-windows-server-2019/" target="_blank">Plesk</a> on Windows Server 2019.</p>
