Let’s be honest, when we hear or read that an application is for free, we immediately have doubts: if the application is good or just a waste of time using it. In this case, we have a productivity-oriented program that can be implemented in mid-sized workgroups. We will talk about Wekan and learn how to install it in Debian 10 / Debian 9.

As we are told in their wiki

“Wekan is an open-source kanban board which allows a card-based task and to-do management, similar to tools like WorkFlowy or Trello.”

For those who don’t know, the Kanban Board is a method of work organization and personnel of Japanese origin, that consists of showing the workflow in columns from left to right, where each column is a process or entity.

Wekan is developed by a group of collaborators from all over the world, who donate their time and knowledge to make the application grow and achieve its objectives. Wekan is built with the Meteor JavaScript framework and is distributed under the MIT license, allowing anyone to easily work with and modify it.

Features of Wekan

Being an application focused on productivity, we find a large number of interesting features for the job.

WIP Limits

Boards: List of all your public and private boards, board shortcuts at top of page

Wekan full screen or window on desktop (without browser buttons etc)

It also has an authentication system, an administration panel and the ability to perform SMTP configuration.

With the SMTP configuration you can do the self-registration from the application, or change for invitation only and inviting users to meetings.

And many more that you can always consult on their Github site.

Installing Wekan on Debian 10 / Debian 9

We have already talked about Wekan, and its features and if you have reached this point it is because you want to install it and you will be pleased. Let’s get to work.

The easiest way to install it is through the snap technology, that is easily downloadable and with a single command we can reach the goal.

If you don’t have it installed, all you need is a command:

:~# apt install snapd

installing wekan on Debian

And then with a simple one:

:~# snap install wekan

And with that we’ll have our Wekan installed.

Using Wekan on Debian 10 / Debian 9

Once the installation of Wekan is done, we proceed to enter in our favorite web browser the address http://localhost:8080/ or http://yourserver:8080 and we should see an image like this.

Wekan log in page

Where we are asked to log in and if we do not proceed to register.

Wekan first screen

Before we start we must take into account some of the temrinology that Wekan uses. It’s not complicated at all, but serves as a reference for understanding the workflow.

A board: It can be said that a board is the project itself.

A List: A list can be compared to a project stage. Or a simple step to execute.

A Card:The cards represent a task to be performed.

With these little tips we can get started.

Once you have registered you can use the application and it will show you the following screen:

In this screen it appears empty and we must progressively add the boards.

For the moment we are going to modify the Welcome Board by clicking on it.

Welcome Board

On this screen we can add the cards to indicate the tasks to be done, divided into basic or advanced tasks. Let’s add a basic task by clicking on Add Card.

Adding a card

Then we write in the name of the task and click on Add.

After adding it we can click on the card and modify its properties, such as: reception, start and end dates, as well as the members who are assigned the task.

So we can continue to improve our work, adding people, customizing with colors and defining whether the board is public or private.

Modify some settings

As mentioned above, without configuring anything Wekan is available at http://localhost:8080/, but it is possible to modify some parameters and configurations, being the port change highly recommended. To this end, we write:

:~# snap set wekan port="8081"

Obviously you can place any port you want.

We can also assign you the address where Wekan will be accessed.

:~# snap set wekan root-url="http://www.example.com:5000"

Note: both the port and the domain are examples

Once we have made the changes, we must always restart the Wekan service for the changes to take effect.

:~# systemctl restart snap.wekan.wekan

To conclude this article and not to make it too long, we can say that Wekan is a great application focused on productivity in teamwork with multiple tools and a focus always aimed at process optimization.

Its installation process is very simple thanks to the snap technology, and avoids long configuration processes.

For more information, you can visit the project’s website and share this article through your favorite social networks.

There are more and more applications available for Linux. It is a fact that the old fame that there are few applications in Linux remains more and more in the past. Recently, I have come across Graviton a simple and good text editor for Linux. Despite being in an early development phase, it has some interesting features. In this post, you will learn about this program, as well as install it on your favorite Linux distribution.

Meeting this text editor for Linux

Graviton-code-editor is a text editor for Linux that is built on the basis of Electron. It is quite simple, but promising features. This makes it a simple editor, elegant and very easy to install. Besides this, it is an opensource project released under the MIT license and is not only available for Linux but also for MacOS and Windows.

Some features of Graviton are:

The application supports themes. So, you can customize it and feel more comfortable with the editor.

Thanks to the plugin support, we will be able to extend the functionality of the editor. It is also possible to create your own plugins.

If we are working with multiple files, we can split the screen. Quite useful this feature.

You can use Zen Mode.

If you are a developer, you will also like that it has support for many programming languages. That is, it has syntax highlighting. Ideal for reviewing the specific source code.

Moreover, Graviton is translated into several of the world’s most popular languages. So, this is unlikely to be an obstacle.

However, the autocomplete works but is not entirely stable, but will be improved in future versions.

So, how to install it?

Graviton is available for Linux, in many formats for Ubuntu, Debian. However, we can also get it through AppImage or as a snap package.

Currently, version 1.0.1 is available, which is the latest version available. It is a beta, but it works quite well. So, you can go to the release page to download it.

If you choose the .DEB format, remember to install it later using the terminal.

:~$ sudo dpkg -i [file_path]

Or if you want to use snap.

:~$ sudo snap install graviton --beta

System administrators or developers use the terminal a lot. This is well known by all. Especially the former, because they base their work on services and applications that run on a server. For security and performance reasons, these servers cannot have a graphical interface so their environment is limited to the terminal. To access them, SSH is normally used in a Linux terminal or a dedicated client. So, in this post, I will tell you about Termius an SSH client that promises to revolutionize and innovate the way we use the protocol.

Looking for an SSH client? Termius is here

Termius is an application that can be installed in multiple systems. That is, it is cross-platform. It has versions for iOS, Android, Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. Its main advantage is that it not only supports SSH but other Telnet or Mosh protocols.

On the other hand, Termius offers us the possibility to synchronize our data between the different versions of the application. Do not worry, its developers say it is secure because it incorporates end-to-end encryption. In addition, Termius gathers commands from all your servers and provides suggestions while you type.

In addition to all this, termius It is Mosh-compatible, providing excellent reliability on high-latency constantly changing connections. This makes it ideal on slow connections or on a 3G mobile network.

With Termius you can do the following:

Add several hosts. In this way, you simplify the connection process.

Arrange hosts into groups. These groups can be used not only for the organization but to define a set of defaults for newly created hosts in that group.

Tags provide a convenient way for you to categorize your hosts.

And many other features that you can consult in the project documentation.

How to install Termius?

As I mentioned before, the application supports several platforms including mobile. In the case of our beloved Linux, the development team provides a Snap-based installer. This has many advantages such as the ease of installation and that we can install it on any distribution that supports snap.

So open a terminal and run the following command:

:~$ sudo snap install termius-app

Then just wait for the application to be installed and start enjoying it.

We live in the age of productivity and communications. That for me is the technological summary of our time. All the great tools of our time are focused on improving productivity. And if, in addition to this, it improves the way we handle our main accounts, then we are talking about a great application. In this sense, Rambox emerges as an interesting all-in-one that aims to unify those accounts. So, that is why, in this post, we will tell you about this fantastic app for Ubuntu.

Rambox an extraordinary app for Ubuntu

Rambox is an application that intends to govern all our communication accounts in a single workspace. For example, with Rambox we can have several Gmail or Outlook accounts in a single application. But not only that, it supports Whatsapp, Telegram and other messaging services. So if you use many of these services, Rambox is for you.

Rambox has a free version that I consider sufficient for most users. However, it also has business plans to further extend the features it brings to us. Some of them are:

Keyboard shortcuts. With this, the use of Rambox will be quite efficient.

Also, you can enable and disable applications without deleting them.

To improve the use of the application, there is a Do not disturb mode

Rambox takes the security aspect very seriously. So you can set up a master password to access your services. You will also be able to create and configure your own applications.

So let’s install this app for Ubuntu.

Install Rambox on Ubuntu

Rambox is an application that is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS. The detail with Linux is that it is only distributed under the snap format. So, we could say that it is an app for Ubuntu.

To install it open a terminal and run the following command:

:~$ sudo snap install rambox

Then, once the installation is finished, you can run it from the main menu.

1.- Rambox an extraordinary app for ubuntu

As you can see, there are many services available. In my case, I will add Outlook.

2.- Adding a service on Rambox

Then, you need to type your credentials.

Now you only have to enjoy this application that competes directly with Franz.

You can also read our post about Franz.

Conclusion

Rambox comes to unify our accounts into one. With great support and modern features, make it an application to keep in mind. Especially if we use many accounts and that will help us to avoid having so many tabs in the web browser.

IDE’s are essential to developers. In principle because these professional editors provide a lot of tools that help the coding process. Many of these options are intended for the debugging of catch or integration of other types of services that make up the coding process. In this sense, it could be said that the choice of the IDE is an important first step before starting the coding process of the application. This is because there are many different features with different approaches to different programming languages. So, in this world in which we live, Python is becoming more and more popular and there is a need for IDE focused on this single language. So, today I am going to tell you about Eric. Eric is a fantastic IDE for Python available for Linux.

Looking for an IDE for Python? Eric, it is the solution

Eric is a full featured Python editor and IDE, written in Python. It is based on the cross-platform Qt UI toolkit, integrating the highly flexible Scintilla editor control.

Some of Eric’s main features are as follows:

An unlimited number of editors.

Configurable window layout.

Configurable syntax highlighting.

Sourcecode autocompletion.

Sourcecode calltips.

Advanced project management facilities.

On the other hand, Eric integrates with many different services such as GIT or Mercurial. But it also integrates with Django which is a framework for web programming with Python. So as you can see it is a very versatile IDE for Python. Finally, it is also possible to integrate it with some Code Checkers such as Vulture and PyLint.

Sounds good, does not it? So let’s install it on Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

Install Eric on Ubuntu 18.04 and Linux Mint

Eric has some dependencies that we have to satisfy if we want to install it from its source code. However, we can do it through snap packages. So we do not have to worry about dependencies.

So open a terminal and run the following command:

:~$ sudo apt install snapd

Then, run the next one and wait for the installation to finish.

:~$ sudo snap install eric-ide --classic

1.- Install Eric using Snap

Conclusion

Developing quality applications requires a lot of time and technical knowledge. So applications are needed to help facilitate the process. In this sense, Eric behaves like a great IDE for Python that will be of great help to all lovers of this language.

There’s literally no limit of how many Linux distros can be out there, right? Now, add the fact that they all use different type of software installation methods and voila! You’re at the damn confusing scenario – which one to get????

Well, for making things easier, there’s a better solution that’s already established itself in the heart of the community. The “snap” package system offers a really intuitive method of installing all the popular software of Linux in a universal manner. No more messing around with confusing command lines, DEB/RPM/TAR.GZ files and others.

Setting “snap” core

Well, not all the Linux distros come up with “snap” preconfigured. In most cases, you have to prepare your system by yourself so that it can handle “snap” packages. Don’t worry; it’s an easy job.

Just run the following command(s) according to your Linux distro.

Ubuntu

sudo apt update

sudo apt install snapd

Debian

sudo apt update

sudo apt install snapd

If “sudo” isn’t installed, then follow the following steps.

su root

apt update

apt install snapd

Fedora

sudo dnf install snapd

sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap

OpenSUSE

Enable repo –

sudo zypper addrepo --refresh https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/system:/snappy/openSUSE_Leap_15.0 snappy

sudo zypper dup --from snappy

Install “snap” service –

sudo zypper install snapd

sudo systemctl enable snapd

sudo systemctl start snapd

Arch Linux

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/snapd.git

cd snapd

makepkg -si

sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.socket

sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap

Configuring “snap”

For “snap” to work properly, you need the “core” snap package. Run the following command –

sudo snap install core

For other Linux distros, check out the official documentation of “snapd”.

Voila! Installation complete!

Using “snap”

When you issue a command for installing a snap package, the “snapd” will grab it from the snap servers and install it into your system.

For installing a snap, find it out first in the Snapcraft Store.

Then, run the following command for installing the snap.

sudo snap install <snap_package_name>

Need to find out how many snap packages are installed?

snap list

You can easily disable/enable a snap package.

sudo snap disable <snap_package_name>

sudo snap enable <snap_package_name>

You don’t have to manually update snap packages. The “snapd” regularly checks for updates and updates all the snap packages to the latest version. However, you can manually issue an update order.

sudo snap refresh

Need to find out all the available things you can do with snap?

snap --help

Enjoy!

Developing applications is not as easy a task as many people think. In fact, it’s a complex process that requires time, dedication and a lot of effort on the part of the project team. That’s why having the right tools can be key to application development. So, today I’m presenting you with a fantastic IDE for Ruby. It’s RubyMine.

JetBrains brings us in RubyMine perhaps the best IDE to develop in Ruby. RubyMine has a pretty good design, elegant, sober and functional to start the work.

It has quite modern features such as the possibility to auto-complete the code and the partial search for code, to increase the speed of coding. Of course, it has debugging and code testing tools, as well as support for HTML, CSS, LESS Coffee script, which also makes it ideal for Ruby on Rails.

Let’s install this fantastic IDE for Ruby

First of all, what you have to do is install Ruby. I think it’s obvious, however, I remind you to do it. It’s possible to do it without so many problems with the following command.

:~$ sudo apt install ruby-full

1.- Install Ruby

Installation on Ubuntu 18.04 and Linux Mint 19 is simple because it is available as a snap package. In other words, the whole installation is reduced to one command.

:~$ sudo snap install rubymine --classic

2.- Install RubyMine

Next, launch it.

The first use of RubyMine

When you first run the application. We will be asked to import some previous configurations. Some of them may come from a previous version. Next, the installer will ask us if we accept the license agreement.

3.- Accept the license

Now you will begin to customize this IDE for Ruby. First, select the UI.

4.- Selecting the UI

Now, you have to set the keymap scheme.

5.- The keymap scheme for RubyMine

Now the next step is to integrate the plugins. Leave it that way by default.

6.- The default plugins

Now it’s the turn of the community plugins. You can also install it.

7.- Community plugins

RubyMine is not free so you will be asked to activate the license. However, you can request a trial for 30 days.

8.- RubyMine license activation

Then, the application will ask you if you want to send data anonymously, for statistics and possible improvements.

12.- RubyMine
