Hello! It is very important that the computer runs smoothly. Therefore, speeding up the system shutdown is a good measure to take. Moreover, it will save time just by making a few adjustments. Certainly, speeding up Windows startup is very important. But we can also speed up the Windows 10 shutdown. Sometimes we think that speeding up the system means buying a new computer. However, we can improve it with some tricks.

Use the Windows 10 quick startup/shutdown feature

This functionality has been included since Windows 8. Therefore, the system skips some steps to turn on. This is what the fast startup function is all about. Likewise, it also serves to speed up the shutdown. It should be enabled by default in Windows 10. However, let’s check it out. With this intention, press the Win+X combination. Once there, click on Power Options.

Entering the energy options

Now, in the right menu look for the Related settings option. Then click on Additional power settings.

Next, you have to select the behavior of the Power button.

Setting the behavior of the power button.

First, click on Change settings that are currently unavailable. Finally, you can check the box Turn On fast startup (recommended).

Turning on the fast startup

Speed up Windows 10 shutdown using the registry editor.

Next, we will accelerate the system shutdown. For this purpose, we will use the Windows registry editor. As always, we advise you to proceed with caution. Since this is a very sensitive element of the system. In addition, we recommend you make a backup of the registry.

On the other hand, the intention is that the system waits less time for programs at shutdown. So it will force the shutdown, helping to speed up the process. Please do the following. First, press the Win+R combination. Next, run the Regedit command.

Now, locate the following address in the bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

Next, in the left column, double click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout.

Now, we will edit the string value. Note that the data represents the waiting time before closing the programs. Also, the default is 5,000 milliseconds (5 seconds). Therefore, we can lower the value to 4,000 milliseconds. Which is the minimum recommended. However, we can lower it further. However, programs may close improperly.

Adjusting the timeout for closing programs in Windows 10

Detects programs that slow down the shutdown

Some programs tend to slow down the shutdown of Windows 10. Therefore, we should be able to fix these bugs. This process is easy to do through the Windows 10 Event Viewer. We just need to identify the processes identified with the number 203. First, press Win+R and run the eventvwr command.

Now, in the left menu locate the following path:

Applications and services logs>Microsoft>Windows>Diagnostics-Performance

Then double click on Operational in the center column.

This action will open the element. Consequently, in the menu on the right click on Filter current log.

Consequently, a new window will open. Once there, locate the All events ID checkbox. Please add the value 203 and press OK.

Note that the events identified with the value 203 represent those that slow down the system shutdown. Consequently, check the items for software that may cause a shutdown failure. If so, you can uninstall it to correct the fault.

Ultimately we have seen how to speed up the shutdown in Windows 10. As final tips, it is advisable to keep the system up to date. You should also close all windows and programs by hand before shutting down the system. See you soon!

Hi! We are currently using the computer for multiple tasks. However, there comes a time when we have to turn it off. Windows certainly incorporates power-saving mechanisms. But sometimes it is necessary to completely shut down the system. Either for power-saving reasons. As well as debug the system. This task seems easy to do. However, sometimes there are hardware limitations in the computer. Indeed, there may be some damage to the keyboard or mouse. Consequently, today we will see how to shutdown Windows 10. In addition, we will offer you different ways to do it.

How to shutdown Windows with the Alt+F4 combination.

This first option is one of the simplest and most popular. In fact, it is enough to press the Alt+F4 combination to invoke the shutdown window. Please note that this combination is also used to close system windows and applications. Therefore, you must close all windows. Otherwise, you will just close them. Alternatively press the Win+D combination to minimize all windows. Then press Alt+F4 to invoke the window. Once there, just press Enter to shut down the system.

How to shutdown windows using Win+X

Pressing the Win+X combination opens the context menu of the start button. Once there, there are several options. However, the one that interests us is the one related to the shutdown options. Please note that you can also go to this menu by right-clicking on the start button.

How to shutdown windows with the Windows 10 context menu

Shutting down windows with a shortcut.

It is also possible to shut down Windows with a button or shortcut. This option is very useful as it allows you to shut down the system with just a couple of clicks. Please refer to our tutorial to learn how to do it.

How to shut down Windows when it is stuck.

Surely you have gone through a situation similar to this one. You find yourself working, studying or just playing. Suddenly, the system crashes and does not let you use the mouse or access the start menu. In such a case, you can still resort to a classic Windows combination. In fact, just press Control+Al+Del. As a result, the Windows Security menu will be displayed. Which consists of a menu with a blue screen in the background. Once there you will see several options, but you can go down with the keyboard or the mouse until the option to turn off the computer.

How to shutdown windows with Control+Alt+Del

How to shut down Windows from the start menu

In the start menu there are many useful options for the system. There is also the option to shut down the system. Just click on the start button. Then just click on the universal icon to shut down the system.

Shutting down Windows with the Start menu

Alternatively you can do it by pressing the Windows key. Then press Tab and scroll down to Shutdown.

How to shut down Windows with commands.

We have previously discussed the Win+R combination. It allows you to open the window to execute all kinds of commands. Well, after pressing the mentioned combination, please run the following command:

shutdown -s

After pressing Enter, the system will be shut down. It is also possible to set a countdown timer to shut down Windows. Just run the command shutdown -s -t followed by the number of seconds it will take for the computer to shut down. Okay, so ultimately we have seen how to shutdown Windows 10. We also have several ways to accomplish the task. See you soon!

Hi, how are you? Windows 10 is the most widely used program in the world. Its type of users ranges from professionals, companies, to ordinary people. Indeed, some normal people often forget to turn off the computer. This can be problematic since it shortens the life of the hardware in addition to generating problems of consumption. If you are one of those people, or simply want to automate it, then this is your post. Inasmuch as we are going to see how to schedule the automatic shutdown in Windows 10.

Schedule automatic shutdown using the Run box.

The run tool has been present since older versions of Windows. In this case, we will use it to schedule the automatic shutdown in Windows 10. With this in mind, press the Win+R combination to invoke the run tool, and type the following command:

shutdown –s –t numberofseconds

Please note that you have to add the number of seconds you want to delay the system shutdown. Suppose, the idea is to postpone the shutdown for 10 minutes. Well, in that case, add the value 600. This is because 60 seconds is equivalent to one minute, and when you multiply it by 10, then the value 600 results.

Programming the shutdown using the run tool

Program the shutdown of Windows using the Command Prompt.

Another method of programming the shutdown is to use the Command Prompt. Some users are not experts using the console, however, in this case, its use is very simple. To launch a CMD, press the Win+R combination to launch the Run tool. Once there, type CMD.

Launch a Command Prompt

After the CMD opens, just enter the same command as in the previous step:

shutdown –s –t 600

After you press enter, the result will be the same. Consequently, Windows will issue a shutdown warning.

Scheduling Windows shutdown using the CMD

Use Windows Powershell for auto shutdown

The PowerShell tool can also be used for shutdown programs in Windows 10. With this intention, press the Win+X combination and then click on Windows PowerShell.

Launch the PowerShell

Once there, just enter the same command used in the previous two steps.

shutdown –s –t 600

Programming the shutdown using the PowerShell.

The effect of this method is exactly the same as with the previous two.

Use the Windows 10 task scheduler

Finally, let’s schedule the shutdown of Windows graphically. With this in mind, we will use the Windows Task Scheduler. First, press the Win+Q combination and enter Task in the search bar.

Opening the task scheduler

Once the application is launched, just click on Create a basic task

Creating a basic task.

In the box below, assign the name to the task. Choose something simple like Shutdown

Assign the name to the task.

Then choose the periodicity of the shutdown task. For this example, we will use the option Daily.

Choose the option daily

Just keep an eye on the set time for shutdown. Also, set the number 1 in the lower field so that the task is repeated every day.

Sets the start date of the task

It then sets the corresponding action for the task. In this case, select Start to program. And press next to continue.

Select the action to start a program.

Scheduling is one of the most interesting things you can do for increasing your productivity on lots of things. This technique is also quite useful in certain situations when you don’t want to manage things with your hands. For example, you can easily schedule SHUTDOWN on your system without many complexions. Yes, it’s possible to automate the shutdown of your system and also, wake up system!

Let’s take a look on automating the entire shutdown process.

Automatic shutdown

As the name suggests, every Linux system comes up with the “shutdown” tool. The tool is generally for shutting down the system with the power of performing a number of additional tasks.

For example, you can easily configure the tool for commencing shutdown at a specific time of the day.

sudo -s
OR
su -

shutdown -P now

This command tells the computer to shut it down just now. Alternatively, tell your computer to shut itself down at exactly 8:00 PM (20:00).

shutdown -P 20:00

Note that the time is in 24-hr format. That’s the problem with the “shutdown” tool. Don’t worry; you can easily use this awesome online converter for converting 12-hr into 24-hr.

If you want to cancel the scheduled shutdown, run this command:

shutdown -c

Rebooting with “shutdown”

As I said earlier, “shutdown” tool, despite its name, is capable of doing more than that. Run this command for rebooting your computer at 5:30 PM (17:30).

shutdown -r 17:30

If you wish to cancel, run the command as usual:

shutdown -c

Scheduling wakeups

There is another tool “rtcwake”. This tool suspends the system and then, wakes it up at a specific time. For acquiring the entire cheatsheet of “rtcwake”, run the following command:

rtcwake --help >> ~/rtcwake-help.txt

A popular method of suspending the system is suspending it to RAM. Suspending to RAM offers greater power saving and faster performance on waking up. Run the following command:

su -
OR
sudo -s

rtcwake -m mem -s 28800

Here, you will notice that we’ve used the time in seconds. It’s the best way to make precise calculations despite having a little usage difficulty. You can take the help of this tool for converting time to seconds.

If you want to suspend your system to disk, run this command:

rtcwake -m disk -s 43200

There are other things that you can do right from the same command. For example, if you want to start Firefox right after the computer wakes up, the command should look like this:

sudo rtcwake -m disk -s 43200 && firefox

Use the “&&” (without quotes) to tell Bash shell to perform “command1 AND command2 AND …”. This command line will start LibreOffice, GIMP, and Firefox one after another.

sudo rtcwake -m disk -s 43200 && libreoffice && gimp && firefox

Don’t suspend right away!

Generally, whenever you use the command with “rtcwake”, it will immediately suspend the system for waking up after the specified time period. However, you may not want to suspend when you run the command. In that case, use this command line:

rtcwake -m no -s 43200

It’ll tell “rtcwake” only to wake up the computer after 12 hours (43200 seconds). You have to manually suspend your system before the time so that the computer can do the job properly.

Enjoy!
