As indicated, there is no specific tool for this task. However, Windows has options to solve it. The first thing you have to do is to open the Start menu. Then, enter the term Task Scheduler and open the application. This tool is designed to create automatism in Windows.

This is so because the Windows shutdown is considered as a program by the operating system. Consequently, select this option and press Next.

Opening windows file explorer

From here begins the most complex process. However, it is also the most important step. In effect, you will have to choose the program you want to run. It will therefore be the Windows shutdown program. To begin, click on the Browse button to open Windows Explorer. From there you have to locate the program.

This action will display the file explorer. Please navigate to the address C:Windows System32. For convenience, you can copy and paste in the top bar of the file explorer. Once you are inside, double-click on the shutdown.exe application to select it. Note that it can be displayed without the .exe extension.

Next, we will come to the last step. At this stage, we will see a summary of the entire configuration. It is time to check that everything is in order. However, you can go back and modify any aspect if you wish. If everything is in order, you can click Finish to confirm the automatic shutdown. From now on, every day at the time you have set, the computer will shut down automatically.

How to program automatic shutdown using the CMD

The first method I propose is very simple to use. However, some users are not comfortable using the command line. Also, this method allows you to program the shutdown for the current section. In addition, the time frame is expressed in seconds, so you will have to convert it to the time you need.

Once launched you must enter the following syntax:

shutdown -s -t 

The value corresponding to -t, represents the time for shutdown. For example, to set the shutdown time to one hour, the command would be as follows:

shutdown -s -3600

Remember that time is represented in seconds. Consequently, 1 hour is equivalent to 3600 seconds. So from now on, you can set any countdown you want. But always remember to express it in seconds. As mentioned, one drawback of this method is that it is only used per session. That is, it cannot be scheduled daily for a certain time. To accomplish this, let’s move on to the next method.

Schedule automatic shutdown of Windows 10 using the task scheduler

This process is longer and more complex than the previous one, but it has more possibilities. Since it allows to program the shutdown to be executed daily. Or also for a specific day and time. Let’s see how to do it. For that purpose, we will use the task scheduler in the search bar.

Then click on Create Basic Task

In the first place, give it a name that is easy to remember and locate. This way you can easily edit or delete it in the future.

Now it’s time to set the time you want the task to be repeated. That is, you can set the system to turn off as required. In this case we will choose the option Daily.

Next, you must set the start date of the task. Additionally, add the time you want the computer to be turned off. And to ensure that it repeats every day at the same time, please type 1 in the repeat box.

Please select the option to Start a program.

In the box corresponding to the program or script please paste the following: C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe. This corresponds to the shutdown action in Windows 10. You can also search for it manually by browsing in the System32 directory

Finally, check the parameters of the newly created task. If you’ve done everything right, you’ll see the summary of the settings.

After pressing Finish, the task will have been successfully added. Consequently, the computer will be turned off daily at the set time. Schedule automatic shutdown using the Run box.

The run tool has been present since older versions of Windows. In this case, we will use it to schedule the automatic shutdown in Windows 10. With this in mind, press the Win+R combination to invoke the run tool, and type the following command:

 shutdown –s –t numberofseconds

Please note that you have to add the number of seconds you want to delay the system shutdown. Suppose, the idea is to postpone the shutdown for 10 minutes. Well, in that case, add the value 600. This is because 60 seconds is equivalent to one minute, and when you multiply it by 10, then the value 600 results.

Program the shutdown of Windows using the Command Prompt.

Another method of programming the shutdown is to use the Command Prompt. Some users are not experts using the console, however, in this case, its use is very simple. To launch a CMD, press the Win+R combination to launch the Run tool. Once there, type CMD.

After the CMD opens, just enter the same command as in the previous step:

 shutdown –s –t 600

After you press enter, the result will be the same. Consequently, Windows will issue a shutdown warning.

Use Windows Powershell for auto shutdown

The PowerShell tool can also be used for shutdown programs in Windows 10. With this intention, press the Win+X combination and then click on Windows PowerShell.

Once there, just enter the same command used in the previous two steps.

 shutdown –s –t 600 

The effect of this method is exactly the same as with the previous two.

Use the Windows 10 task scheduler

Finally, let’s schedule the shutdown of Windows graphically. With this in mind, we will use the Windows Task Scheduler. First, press the Win+Q combination and enter Task in the search bar.

Once the application is launched, just click on Create a basic task

In the box below, assign the name to the task. Choose something simple like Shutdown

Then choose the periodicity of the shutdown task. For this example, we will use the option Daily.

Just keep an eye on the set time for shutdown. Also, set the number 1 in the lower field so that the task is repeated every day.

It then sets the corresponding action for the task. In this case, select Start to program. And press next to continue.

In the box below, click on Browse.

Then go to the following route: C:Windows32\System32. And from there select the program shutdown.exe

Then press Finish, to close the dialog box. This way it is possible to schedule the automatic shutdown in Windows 10. It is a way to improve productivity and organize tasks. Automatic shutdown

As the name suggests, every Linux system comes up with the “shutdown” tool. The tool is generally for shutting down the system with the power of performing a number of additional tasks.

For example, you can easily configure the tool for commencing shutdown at a specific time of the day.

sudo -s
OR
su -

shutdown -P now

This command tells the computer to shut it down just now. Alternatively, tell your computer to shut itself down at exactly 8:00 PM (20:00).

shutdown -P 20:00

Note that the time is in 24-hr format. That’s the problem with the “shutdown” tool. Don’t worry; you can easily use this awesome online converter for converting 12-hr into 24-hr.

If you want to cancel the scheduled shutdown, run this command:

shutdown -c

Rebooting with “shutdown”

As I said earlier, “shutdown” tool, despite its name, is capable of doing more than that. Run this command for rebooting your computer at 5:30 PM (17:30).

shutdown -r 17:30

If you wish to cancel, run the command as usual:

shutdown -c

Scheduling wakeups

There is another tool “rtcwake”. This tool suspends the system and then, wakes it up at a specific time. For acquiring the entire cheatsheet of “rtcwake”, run the following command:

rtcwake --help >> ~/rtcwake-help.txt

A popular method of suspending the system is suspending it to RAM. Suspending to RAM offers greater power saving and faster performance on waking up. Run the following command:

su -
OR
sudo -s

rtcwake -m mem -s 28800

Here, you will notice that we’ve used the time in seconds. It’s the best way to make precise calculations despite having a little usage difficulty. You can take the help of this tool for converting time to seconds.

If you want to suspend your system to disk, run this command:

rtcwake -m disk -s 43200

There are other things that you can do right from the same command. For example, if you want to start Firefox right after the computer wakes up, the command should look like this:

sudo rtcwake -m disk -s 43200 && firefox

Use the “&&” (without quotes) to tell Bash shell to perform “command1 AND command2 AND …”. This command line will start LibreOffice, GIMP, and Firefox one after another.

sudo rtcwake -m disk -s 43200 && libreoffice && gimp && firefox

Don’t suspend right away!

Generally, whenever you use the command with “rtcwake”, it will immediately suspend the system for waking up after the specified time period. However, you may not want to suspend when you run the command. In that case, use this command line:

rtcwake -m no -s 43200

It’ll tell “rtcwake” only to wake up the computer after 12 hours (43200 seconds). You have to manually suspend your system before the time so that the computer can do the job properly.
