WinRar

The big name around the RAR format, a great alternative to the ZIP format, but closed. It offers incredible levels of compression (better than zip). Plus lightning fast speeds when compressing or decompressing and a pretty good 128-bit AES encryption tool. Besides being the only application capable of creating archives in this format, it can handle virtually all others, zip, 7z, TAR, iSO and so on. It can also create self-extracting archives (EXE) for which no other decompression software is needed.

WinRAR is commercial software and is distributed for 64-bit Windows in several versions for personal or professional use for a one-time fee. A 40-day free trial is offered. On the other hand, the UNRAR variant (only for decompressing this format) is released for other systems and is integrated or can be installed on GNU/Linux distributions.

PeaZip

A free and open-source solution that provides a more attractive and usable interface for the ordinary consumer than the one offered by 7-zip. Remember that it uses it as a base for its free software distribution. It allows compressing and decompress in 200 formats such as 7z, Tar and Zip. In addition, it can decompress RAR and also compress, although for this, you have to have WinRAR installed. It implements a powerful and complete file manager to edit, view, browse, and search files. It also includes an extensive set of data security features with strong AES encryption, encrypted password manager, optional two-factor authentication, secure deletion and file hashing tools.

PeaZip is available for Windows, Linux, BSD or ARM 32-bit and 64-bit. If you are looking for a 7-Zip with a modern and attractive user interface, this application is for you.

B1 Free Archiver

Less known among file compressors, it uses a native open source B1 format. With an attractive interface (it also works on command line), it allows you to compress/decompress formats such as B1 and Zip. Although it only allows compressing RAR. It offers password-protected archives encrypted with 256-bit AES algorithm.

Compress files in Android.

A great advantage provided by the operating system is that it is possible to manage compressed files natively. In other words, there is no need to download third-party tools. However, it is good to clarify that if the management of compressed files will be frequent, then it is advisable to download special tools. If not, then Android provides everything needed to work with compressed files. Well, to compress files we will use the File Manager application. This app is present in most Android devices. Please note that this app can be different on computers with a custom interface. This happens on Samsung devices, the EMUI layer or the MIUI interface. However, the functionality is almost the same.

To compress the files, just launch the File Manager application. Once there, select the files with a long touch.

Then, click on the menu and select the option Compress

The wizard will assign a default name related to the files. However, you can choose any name. In addition, the file will be saved in ZIP format.

At the end of the process, you’ll see the zip file. The only drawback of this method is that all files must be in the same folder.

Decompressing files on Android.

To decompress the files, the process is as simple as the previous one. The first thing you have to do is open the File Manager application, and select the compressed file. Immediately a menu will be displayed with the file options. It is possible to unzip the file in the same location or in another folder. In this case, we’re going to decompress the file in a different location.

Then the file explorer will show the folders present in the system. Just choose one, and click on Extract.

After the decompression is completed, a folder will be created with the files in the selected location. Please enter it to see the unzipped files.

Using Unrar

You can use Unrar on both command lines and your favorite file browser.

• Command line example

Run the following command for extracting the RAR archive –

unrar x <rar_file.rar>

Find out the extracted file(s)/folder(s) –

ls

• Using with the file browser

Fire up the default file browser of your system (GNOME – Nautilus, Dolphin – KDE Plasma and others).

Select the RAR file >> right-click and hit “Extract here”.

Voila! You’re ready to deal with all the annoying RAR archives out there!
