Linux is an open system is adaptable for many different things due to the availability of its source code. In addition, as it is a secure system, everything will go well with the data. for this reason is that many NAS devices use it as a system. Today in this article I will show you how to install OpenMediaVault for your NAS.

First of all, it is convenient to say that NAS is a technology for connecting a server with TCP protocol to store files and share them on a network. A major benefit of NAS is its ability to provide multiple clients on the network with access to the same files. For example, it is used by many companies worldwide that need to have their files available anywhere.

OpenMediaVault is a network attached storage (NAS) solution based on Debian Linux. It contains services like SSH, (S)FTP, SMB/CIFS, DAAP media server, RSync, BitTorrent client and many more. It’s simple, out-of-the-box and extensible via plugins.

Let’s install it.

Requirements

The hardware requirements to install OpenMediaVault are very accessible as it is a Debian 9 based system. Generally, you need 1gb ram, at least 20gb of hard disk and a 64bits processor.

I will use VirtualBox for this tutorial, but the process is the same if you have real hardware.

Downloading OpenMediaVault

First, go to your download section and download the image.

1.- Downloading OpenMediaVault

2.- Downloading OpenMediaVault

If you use real hardware, you need to burn the image to a flash drive and make it bootable. For this I recommend etcher.

Install OpenMediaVault

Once you get the system started, you’ll see something like this.

3.- OpenMediaVault boot screen

Select the Install option. If you have installed Debian 9 you will find the process very similar.

First you’ll be asked what country you’re in.

4.- choosing the country where you are

Then, you will have to configure the Keymap of the keyboard. Choose yours.

At the end of the network configuration, you have enter the hostname of the computer.
