Today, OneDrive is one of the high-end services in the cloud storage services market. Indeed, it possesses remarkable features that Microsoft has been working on for twelve years. Let’s take a look at some main features:

• It offers its users Microsoft Office suite tools through Office Online. So they can create, edit and share documents, spreadsheets, slides, and others within the web browser. It has online versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
• It allows up to 5 files to be uploaded simultaneously with any web browser. In addition, it makes it possible to install ActiveX tools. Consequently, it allows users to upload an unlimited number of files from Windows Explorer.
• It enables users to share hyperlinks and provides a cloud folder to store as many as desired.
• It is associated with other web services to operate fully. In this way, it can address different user requirements in addition to document creation and editing. Thus, in addition to interoperating with Outlook and Skype, it is associated with Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to allow its users to share their work on social networks. Similarly, it has links to Bing to provide users with a search history in the main menu.
• Its free version offers 5 GB of storage. On the other hand, the paid versions offer 50 GB, 100 GB, 200 GB, 1 Tb and 6 Tb storage.
• It enables subscription to RSS, feeds of the content of public folders. These generate preview images of the added files, as a thumbnail or icon of the file type.

Additional features

• Allows the download of complete folders in the form of compressed files in ZIP format.
• The download limit for a single file is 15 GB. On the other hand, for downloading a set, the limit is 20 GB.
• It implements a recycling bin. It takes care of storing the files deleted by users during a given interval of time. Consequently, it keeps them in a storage space outside the user’s available space in the cloud.
• It allows viewing PDF and ODF (Open Document Format) files. The latter is an XML (Extensible Markup Language) based file that is supported by many word processing applications.
• It allows its users to upload photos. Therefore, it is possible for other users to view them via web browsers. Generally, the photos are downloaded from Windows Photo Gallery or directly as ZIP files. It uses a geolocation data system to update users’ multimedia files.
• It has a client that performs as an application on devices with Android, iOS, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11 Operating Systems. Currently, this application is a UWP (Universal Windows Platform) that merges the functions of the app version and the web version.
• All files stored in the OneDrive cloud are monitored by Microsoft. Therefore, any violation of the accepted code of conduct will result in permanent or temporary account suspension. In addition, this service provides a “Personal Vault”, a folder with additional security for storing sensitive files.

How it works

The basic architecture of OneDrive is a client-server network. The application installed on the device acts as an intermediary between the cloud servers and the Microsoft user. Like any service of this nature, it has a web version that eliminates the client’s intermediary and leads the user directly to the virtual hosting of his files.

Thanks to the linkage with the Outlook account, the web version of OneDrive is able to upload any file or folder from the local disk without the need for synchronizations between devices. It also allows you to create any document, spreadsheet, and slide. In this sense it differs from the client application that is installed on the devices, dependent on synchronization between devices. Through the same mechanism, it is able to keep track of activities, providing different options in the initial menu.

The web version of Outlook allows users to access it from devices with operating systems incompatible with the client. However, this action depends on the Internet connection. Therefore, the web version of the application proves to be much more practical and efficient for users, especially if it is a UWP.

How to use OneDrive

The main requirement to make use of OneDrive features is to register as a Microsoft user. As you might guess, this involves simply creating an account in Outlook. With this done, you will be able to directly access the OneDrive website. From there you will be able to upload, create, edit and share files. The following is a step-by-step description of the basic OneDrive actions.

Uploading a file

• Access the main menu of the OneDrive user account. Once there, click on Upload. All this, from the official OneDrive page.
• A small menu with the options Files and Folder will be displayed. Select the Files option. If you want to upload a set of files contained in a particular folder, select the other option.

• A local disk storage window will then pop up to select the file(s) to be uploaded to the cloud.
• OneDrive will notify that files are being uploaded with a message in the top bar.

• To open the documents, just click on their icon in the menu and OneDrive will refresh the portal to show the pages of the file.
• If you want to copy the file from the main My files menu to a folder, click the Copy to button on the top bar. You can select the folder that will also contain the document.
• Also, taking advantage of this drop-down menu, you can create a new folder to contain the document by clicking New Folder.
• Type the name of the new folder and click Create. Then select the folder you have created.
• Alternatively, functions such as copy, move and delete can be applied from the main My Files menu by selecting the white circle in the upper corner of the file or files to be modified.
• If you wish to upload files directly to the desired folder, simply access the cloud folder and click the Upload button, repeating the first four steps described above.

How to share files

• Select the file, or files, you want to share to update the top bar of the main My Files menu and press the Share button on the bar.
• Type the name(s) of the recipient(s) or their e-mail address in the text box and press the blue Send button. If desired, omit typing a descriptive message.
• If you want to create a hyperlink to the files, click on the gray circle of the Copy link option.
• Click the Copy button to share the hyperlink to the files directly to the recipients via instant messaging applications, or any other tool.
• To set restrictions on editing and viewing of the hyperlink, click the lower box containing Anyone who has the link can edit.
• Finalize the settings by clicking Apply and distribute the link to the target users.

How to create a document

• Go back to the My Files main menu and click on the New button in the top bar.
• Select the type of Office document, whether it is a Word document, an Excel spreadsheet or a PowerPoint presentation, etc.
• The user will be redirected to a new tab consisting of the Office portal of the chosen document. In this case, a Word doc has been chosen, so the essential Office interface for creating and editing the document is displayed.
• The document name can be changed by clicking on the Document1 – Saved to OneDrive button located in the upper blue bar.

Check available space on OneDrive from Windows

Regardless of the capacity of our subscription, it is essential to control the storage space. This way we avoid filling it surprised. Indeed, uploading files to OneDrive is as easy as copying and pasting them as if it were a normal folder.

On the other hand, Microsoft’s cloud is integrated into the operating system itself. To access it, we have an icon in the notification area. From there, we can carry out the few configuration options offered. In this way, we will have to click on the OneDrive icon in the lower-right corner. This will bring up a menu where we must click on the gear icon. As a result, another list will be displayed where we will select the Configuration section.

This will open a pop-up window where we click on the Account tab. Here, in the OneDrive section, we can see information about our account. Looking at the folders

Repairing OneDrive.

Before attempting complex repairs, try something simple. First, right-click on the OneDrive icon. Next, click Exit the app. Finally, re-open the app from the Windows Start menu. Another option is to log out and then log back in. If this does not work, then proceed to the next steps.

How to repair OneDrive by resetting it

How to unlink OneDrive from Windows 10.

In past editions of Windows 10, it was very complicated to remove OneDrive from the computer. Well, currently we will offer a couple of options. The first one is to unlink and hide OneDrive. This is a partial solution, since we do not uninstall the app completely. Before I continue, let me clarify something. Unlinking or uninstalling OneDrive does not mean that you lose access to your saved files. Therefore, you just need to log in to Onedrive.com to regain access to the data.

Let’s take a look at the steps:

• Click on the OneDrive icon in the taskbar.
• Please follow the route below: Help & Settings>Settings

• Next, click on the Account tab. Once there click on Unlink this PC and then on Unlink account.

Once the account is unlinked, let’s hide OneDrive. With this in mind, press the Win+E combination to open the file explorer. Once there, right-click on OneDrive. Finally, open Properties.

• Then select the General tab. Now scroll down to Attributes. Please check the Hidden checkbox. This will hide OneDrive from the file explorer.

• Once again click on the OneDrive icon in the taskbar. Then click Help & Settings>Close OneDrive.

This option will remove the OneDrive icon from the taskbar.

Uninstall OneDrive on PC completely

Uninstalling OneDrive in Windows 10 is a very simple and quick process. In fact, it can be uninstalled from Windows Settings or the control panel. With this intention, press the Win+R combination and run the following command:

appwiz.cpl

Once there, scroll down to the bottom until you get OneDrive. Next, right-click and select Uninstall.

Personal Vault

Personal Vault has been added to the latest OneDrive updates. This is an extra way to protect our most sensitive and confidential files. To successfully access Personal Vault, it is necessary to use some of the available authentication methods. It can also be accessed using some method of identity verification, such as PIN, fingerprint, facial unlocking or code sent by email or SMS. Although OneDrive runs with the trusted credentials of the Hotmail or outlook account, in order to access Personal Vault it is necessary to reauthenticate the login. This adds a second layer of security, very useful in case a shared computer is used.

In addition, the files contained in the Personal Vault have additional security measures. For example encryption of files at rest and in transit, monitoring of suspicious activities, detection of viruses and history of file versions. This last feature allows for recovering previous versions. It sounds interesting, doesn’t it? and best of all, it’s free. You can also use OneDrive’s mobile application to take photos, record videos or scan documents and send them directly to the Personal Vault. In addition, if you use a Windows 10 computer, the files in that area will be synchronized with a local copy on the hard drive. This section of the hard disk will be encrypted with the BitLocker system. As a result, we will have a secure area encrypted both in the cloud and locally.

As an extra measure of security, this service has a period of activity. In other words, if you go more than 20 minutes without accessing the Personal Vault, it will close. This means that in order to be able to access the files, it will be necessary to reauthenticate. Now let’s see how to activate and use this very interesting feature.

How to use Personal Vault

The first thing we need to do is log in to our OneDrive account, please login at this link. Once there, please enter your email and password.

Next, please click on Personal Vault. A wizard will be displayed indicating the characteristics of the element. Please click Next to continue.

Please confirm your Hotmail or Outlook account and proceeds to verify it.

Then choose the authentication method. In this case, I chose SMS authentication. So it is imperative to enter the SMS sent by the system. Once this is done, we will be successfully authenticated and we will be able to enter the Personal Vault.

After authenticating, we will enter the Personal Vault for the first time. You can now upload files.

In the options menu are the following options: Lock, Personal Vault settings and the number of free files that can be uploaded (only 3, without a subscription)

In the configuration menu, you can set how to enter and you can also disable the Personal Vault.

OneDrive Free Client

OnDrive free client is a CLI based tool that allows to sync linux with OneDrive cloud.

We have to install some dependencies for OneDrive. Use following commands for dependencies installation according to your linux distributtion.

This will setup PATH, LIBRARY_PATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, DMD, DC, and PS1.
Run `deactivate` later on to restore your environment.

OneDrive Installation

Configuration is optional. By default all files are downloaded in ~/OneDrive and only hidden files are skipped. If you want to change the defaults, you can copy and edit the config file into your ~/.config/onedrive directory.

cp ./config ~/.config/onedrive/config
vi ~/.config/onedrive/config

Now we need to authorize onedrive so it can access our Microsoft OneDrive account. Just run below command:

onedrive

And it will ask you to visit given URL for authorization. visit that URL, login your Microsoft account and allow app to access your account.

Once done, you will be redirected to a blank page. just Copy that blank page URL and paste it into the terminal.

That’s it. Onedrive will start downloading all of your files from cloud to your local directory.

You can see in below screenshot that, OneDrive is synced and files/folders are showing there.

Available options:

sync_dir: directory where all files will be synced.
skip_file: any files or directories that match this pattern will be skipped during sync.
Patterns are case insensitive. * and ? wildcards characters are supported. Use | to separate multiple patterns.

Note: after changing skip_file, you must perform a full synchronization by executing onedrive –resync

Selective sync

Selective sync allows you to sync only specific files and directories. To enable selective sync create a file named sync_list in ~/.config/onedrive. Each line of the file represents a relative path from your sync_dir. All files and directories not matching any line of the file will be skipped during all operations. Here is an example of sync_list:

If you want to sync your files automatically, enable and start the systemd service:
