One of the big problems faced by most users who use older or somewhat limited equipment is the high consumption of software resources. When we work with our computer, both the operating system and the installed applications need PC resources. As well as the use of CPU and RAM memory to function properly. However, when this consumption reaches 100%, for example, is when the issues really start. This can negatively affect all the applications installed on the computer and cause them to stop working. On certain occasions, we may even find ourselves with blockages in the equipment that do not allow us to continue working. A good way is to apply techniques to free up ram memory.

This is precisely why, if we have an old PC that we are demanding a good performance, we should try to free RAM memory from time to time. Although this may seem a complex task, it is not at all. In fact, in these same lines, we are going to talk about a series of simple tricks that will be of great help for these tasks that we mentioned. In a matter of seconds, you will be able to free part of the RAM that is being consumed at that moment. So, you will be able to make Windows work like silk.

Free up RAM with these simple tricks

These tricks are valid on both hardware-limited and more powerful computers. Especially when we are demanding it to the maximum. Moreover, they are changes that can be made in a matter of seconds. In addition, we will notice the difference in the operation of the operating system.

Terminates Windows processes

Using the powerful Task Manager tool of Microsoft’s operating system, we can terminate processes with the right mouse button. All we have to do is access this functionality. Then, click on the programs and processes that consume the most RAM.

Manually closes unnecessary programs

If we have many applications open at that moment, the best thing to do is to close those that we do not need at that moment.

Remove programs from Windows startup.

We can also do it from the Task Manager, specifically if we access the tab called Startup. From there, we will have the possibility of eliminating programs that start automatically with the operating system.

Temporarily disable the antivirus.

Even if it is not forever, deactivating the antivirus for a certain period of time will help us to free up RAM. Normally, this software is constantly running in the background.

Uses third-party software.

We can also use external software solutions such as BySoft FreeRAM to take care of these tasks.

Restart the PC.

As happens on many occasions, restarting our computer will help. This will free up RAM so that we can start working smoothly again.

Disables software running in the background.

Windows gives us the possibility, through its Configuration, to deactivate the execution of programs in the background. This way, we will save a great amount of RAM memory.

Removes visual effects from the interface.

In order to offer us a more attractive user interface, Microsoft includes a multitude of visual effects in the system. Here we are talking about animations and the like that we can disable in order to save memory.

Keep Windows and its programs up to date

Both Microsoft and the rest of the software developers send constant updates of their projects. In many occasions these optimize the operation of all this, which will be very useful in this case.

Run the antivirus from time to time.

High RAM memory consumption can also be caused by some kind of malware that has been installed on Windows. It never hurts to run an antivirus scan of the computer from time to time.

Many times, users want to know if it is possible to upgrade their equipment in terms of RAM. Sometimes for software needs we are in the position to implement more memory. Or we simply would like to change modules to improve the speed of it and thus gain performance. This begs the question: how can we know which RAM slots are empty in our PC? Whether you have a laptop or a PC, there are many situations where you might need to know how many RAM slots you have available. On PC, it is simpler. Indeed, modern cases usually include windows to check the inside. But on laptops it gets complicated and many do not know how to do it. That is one of the reasons for this post. Read on to learn how to know the empty RAM slots of your PC.

How to check for empty RAM slots

As with everything in life, there are several methods to find out exactly which slots are available. In addition, in some cases we can find out a lot more data that can be especially useful. We will see numerous methods, some by software and others by hardware. The best thing is that in most cases the result is successful. However, it is therefore best to have options to compare and be sure that the information is correct.

With Windows

The easiest way is to use Windows 10 or Windows 11. But at the same time it is the most basic and the one that less information contributes. For it is as simple as to press the right button of our mouse in the task bar so that the following menu is shown. Alternatively, you can press the combination Win+X.

It can also be achieved by pressing the Control + Alt + Delete keys. Next, click on the Task Manager. This way, you can know the empty RAM slots that your PC or laptop has in task manager, and it will open. At this point, we will have to go to the performance tab. Once there, click on the memory section, as shown in the following image.

In this section, at the bottom right, Windows 10 will indicate how many slots we have used. In my particular case, I still have one slot available. But in addition, our OS indicates the reserve we have for the integrated graphics and the speed of the same. If we need more specific information for a replacement of our memories or an expansion, we will need to know the exact modules, both their serial numbers and their latencies.

View empty RAM slots with CPU-Z

In this aspect, we can resort to more specialized programs without having to open our laptop or computer. For this, we recommend using the CPU-Z software. There you will find everything you need to download and set it up. The download and installation procedure is elementary. In fact, it behaves like almost any other Windows program. Once run, just click on the SPD tab. From there, this small but powerful program provides us with all possible data. In our particular case, we will see the following:

Correctly, our CPU-Z tells us that our modules are Micron Technology branded. Furthermore, its speed is 666MHz at 150V. We can go jumping between banks if we set the upper tab, so we will see what type of module has each slot in particular. This is the specific memory section where each slot will mark the model, type, serial number or latency. However, the way to know if we actually have free slots is precisely by changing the slot in the drop-down menu of this section.

If the program can read the SPD from the RAM, it will mark the data. If it is empty, the data will be blank, so it is a very intriguing way to see the empty RAM slots and especially to know which ones have a specific module installed. In the Memory section of the same program, we can see if we have Dual Channel or Quad Channel configuration. This depends on the platform. Because it is one thing to have two or four modules, and another that they are well-placed to enable these key technologies.

AIDA64 Extreme

Another equally valid and more powerful method is to use the AIDA 64 software, a much more complete program than CPU-Z. It also has a trial version that can be used free of charge. We recommend the Extreme version as it is more specialized and has specific options, although for checking how many empty RAM slots our PC has, it is not influential as such.

Assuming that we have our software already registered, accessing the summary menu we will have the same information that CPU-Z gave us. However, we will have many more options, test, benchmark and general information of our equipment. For the ones that concern us, we will see something similar to this:

Where we will also see details such as the type of memory (DDR3 in SO-DIMM format) which we cannot see with CPU-Z. There is more information available here, for example, in the Motherboard section, which is inside the equipment section. Here we have the most reliable information for what we are looking for, since it will indicate the type of bus, the bus width and above all the RAM slots supported by the motherboard.

Physically check your PC or laptop

This is either the simplest or the most complicated method, depending on the type of computer we are talking about. If you want to know how many modules you have installed or how many you can install in your PC, and it has a tower with a window, just look at it and see it in a second. This in laptops involves disassembling a cover or the entire bottom structure of the laptop to access the RAM. In this case, we will not only see the modules and get to know them thoroughly, but we will also see the empty RAM slots in our laptop.

It’s not the easiest thing to do, and in the case of disassembling the entire lower housing it may mean loss of warranty according to the manufacturer. However, you won’t find anything more reliable than that at the same time. OK, ultimately, we’ve seen how to know the empty RAM slots of your PC. Bye!

Hello, how are you? Windows 10 has been conceived to optimize the operation of the system according to the hardware of our PC. However, within it, there are some elements and functions that allow improving the performance. One of these elements is the virtual memory or Pagefile. The function of this file is to remove and temporarily store pages that are used less frequently and have been assigned in the RAM to the hard disk. Consequently, when the RAM memory is fully occupied, the system takes care of moving some hosted data to the hard disk. These files will then be moved to the Pagefile. Therefore, the RAM memory will be allocated to priority services and functions of the system. As a result, system performance is maximized by avoiding hanging due to a lack of memory. For that reason, let’s see how to configure virtual memory in Windows 10.

Calculate the virtual memory size in Windows 10.

There is a formula for calculating the virtual memory limit in Windows 10:

The initial size of the paging file is equal to 1.5 per the total amount of operating system RAM.

The maximum size of the paging file is equal to 3 times per the initial size.

How to increase virtual memory in Windows 10. Graphic mode

The first thing you have to do is to enter the Advanced system settings. With this in mind, we need to get into the control panel. Once there, follow the path below: System and Security>System.

Control Panel. System

In the next window, select the Settings tab:

Entering the advanced properties of the system.

Then select the Advanced tab, and locate the Virtual Memory section and select Change:

Select to change the size of the virtual memory.

In the next window, you can see the current size assigned to the virtual memory. To edit it, uncheck the first box. Then select custom size and assign the values for the initial size and maximum size. Select Set to complete the process.

Setting the initial size and maximum size of the virtual memory.

Configuring the virtual memory size with Command Prompt.

The first thing we have to do is validate the status of the pagefile. With that intention, you have to open a CMD as administrator and enter the following command:

wmic pagefile list /format:list

Them, we are going to customize the virtual memory of Windows 10. Please enter the following command:

wmic computersystem where name="%computername%" set AutomaticManagedPagefile=false

Establishing custom virtual memory management

Next, we define the values of the virtual memory using the following command:

wmic pagefileset where name="C:\\pagefile.sys" set InitialSize=SIZE,MaximumSize=SIZE

Please remember to replace the SIZE value with the size you are going to assign to the pagefile file. It must be remembered, that these values are established according to the formula we indicated at the beginning of the post. For instance:

Setting Virtual Memory Values

Finally, restart Windows to apply the changes using the following command:

shutdown -r -t 00

Automatically set the size of virtual memory.

If you want Windows to manage virtual memory values automatically, then run the following command:

wmic computersystem where name="%computername%" set AutomaticManagedPagefile=true

Setting the value of the virtual memory automatically

Conclusion

Ultimately, we have seen how to configure virtual memory in Windows 10. Additionally, I have given you the options to do it graphically and through the CMD. Thus, you know how to modify these values according to your hardware needs.
Hello, how are you? In my particular opinion, Windows 10 has been the best operating system Microsoft has ever made (I apologize for the romantic users of Windows XP). In addition, it behaves very stably and generally runs very well on any equipment, both new and old. Besides, driver compatibility issues have been fixed. I still remember when after installing Windows XP or Windows 7, I had to waste time looking for correct drivers. Those problems are things of the past, and now when we install the operating system, we have a team ready to work ideally. However, with the passage of time, we can notice how the performance suffers, and the system is no longer as fast as at the beginning. With this intention, here are some tips for improving CPU performance in Windows 10.

Uninstall unused applications

On many occasions, there are a lot of applications in the system that we never or hardly ever use. Worst of all, they take up space on the hard drive and often run in the background, consuming CPU and RAM resources. With this in mind, we need to type control on the search bar, to enter in Control Panel. Now we just have to choose the application we want to remove, double click on it and the uninstallation process will begin.

Control Panel. Uninstalling programs

Uninstall pre-installed programs

Windows 10 comes with some pre-installed applications, some of them useful, others not so much. In the same way, Windows 10 comes with some pre-glazed applications, some of them useful, others not so much. For these cases, we have to type in the search bar: app and select Add or remove programs.

Entering in Add or remove programs

A list with the applications will be displayed, we only have to click on the one we want to uninstall.

Uninstalling pre-installed apps

Disabling startup apps

There are situations where we cannot uninstall an application because it is useful for us. But it is the case that it starts when the system boots, and remains in the background consuming resources. For this purpose, Windows includes a tool that allows you to view applications that start at startup. To activate it, just type startup in the search bar and enter in Startup Apps.

Entering into Startup apps

The following box contains all applications configured to start when we log in. In addition, we can see the impact they cause in the system and the option to disable them.

Disabling or enabling Startup Apps

Disable Visual Effects

Windows 10 comes with visual effects on windows, tabs, and menus. These are activated by default in the system, and their impact on powerful machines is almost imperceptible. But when we work with more modest equipment, it can become a problem. For that reason, we can disable it by typing in the search bar appear in order to click on Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.

Appearance and performance

in the next window select the tab Visual effects, and choose Adjust for best performance. This will disable all visual effects, you can also choose the Custom option to select which effect you want to deactivate.

Performance window

Defragment the hard drive

Another option to improve the performance of the system is to defragment the hard disk. To do this, type defragment in the search bar Another option to improve the performance of the system is to defragment the hard disk. To do this, we write defragment in the search bar until it appears to defragment and optimize drive. In the following box, select analyze and then optimize, to improve the performance of the hard drive

Optimizing drives by defragments hard drives

Delete temporary files, free up disk space, and clean up the desktop

As we use the system, surfing the Internet, installing programs, the disk is filled with unnecessary temporary files. Windows 10 has its own tool that allows you to erase temporary files, and free up space on your hard drive. This tool is called Disk Cleanup, and to activate it just type Disk Cleanup in the search bar. We select the disk to clean and the items that we want to eliminate. This is also the option to clean up system files.

Cleaning the disk

Keep the drivers updated and Windows 10 itself

it is imperative to have always correctly updated the drivers of our PC, as well as the installed applications and the own operating system is going to help us to improve the performance of Windows 10 and to accelerate the system. Any problem, incompatibility or obsolete driver can make certain components not work properly and the performance of our equipment is not optimal.

OK, that’s all for now, with these simple tips we can improve the performance of our team with windows 10. If you want to know more about our favorite system, I invite you to review our tutorial about installing Docker on Windows 10.

With this, you know how to increase the CPU performance on Windows 10.
