What email clients offer us.

E-mail clients are a type of application that interfaces with an e-mail service. This can be public (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo… ). It can also be installed in a closed infrastructure (e.g., a company). Its basic functions include accessing e-mails to read them and download attachments. In addition, we can send messages by creating new threads or replying to one that the user has previously received.

Obviously, it is always possible to encounter a wide range of possibilities. For example, it is possible to send messages only in plain text or HTML format and to deal with electronic signatures. Strangely enough, it is still possible to meet people who are very suspicious of HTML e-mails because of the possible embedding of malware. In any case, however, it is advisable not to display any messages of suspicious origin. Nor is it advisable never to load images by default. As you know, always be cautious when it comes to security.

Existing modalities. POP3

When it comes to viewing e-mails, users tend to use two ways. The first is Post Office Protocol. This is better known as POP3 in reference to its third version. This is a protocol that downloads e-mail so that it can be viewed locally and without an Internet connection. Therefore, it can be very useful in contexts or situations where the Internet connection is not of high quality. On the downside, much more space is lost for data storage. Consequently, clients generally leave messages on the server until the user explicitly decides to delete them.

With IMAP, mail clients are connected to the server all the time. In addition, their interface remains active to download messages on demand. That way, they can offer faster response times for users. Especially in situations where there are numerous messages.

JMAP

More recently, in 2019, start JSON Meta Application Protocol (JMAP). This is a set of open standard Internet protocols related to e-mail handling. We start with one of the options that offer powerful multi-format support, Thunderbird. It officially covers Windows, Linux, and macOS. It is also preparing its landing on Android through the aforementioned K-9 Mail conversion. In addition, it is free software, as the source code of its desktop application is published under the MPL 2 license.

During its first years, it stood out for being a simple and easy to configure mail client. It also made it easy, especially for those users who used IMAP. Let’s remember that this feature is far from being exclusive. In addition, there are those who think that it is currently better implemented in other applications.

In the second decade of the 21st century, it ended up in a state of semi-abandonment. Even Mozilla publicly showed its intentions to get rid of Thunderbird. However, after failing to find a new home for it, it had to keep the client, albeit under a different organization.

It is a very complete application with support for calendars, address books and the Matrix communications protocol. On the other hand, its interface is being redesigned to adjust to the times. Although it still has the disadvantage of not having support for Microsoft Exchange by default.

Mailspring

Another option that stands out for being free and multiplatform software. Additionally, it comes with support for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Mailspring supports multiple accounts via IMAP and Office 365, unified inbox, touch gestures, themes and layouts, spell checking, contact management. Plus the ability to undo sending and advanced keyboard shortcuts. However, its most attractive feature is that its design is more in line with the lines that are usually used in recent years. Therefore, its appearance is modern and fresh.

Mailspring was born as a fork of another email client, originally called Nylas N1 and then Nylas Mail. However, the lead developer decided to discontinue the project in September 2017 and had the gesture to release its source code under the MIT license. Since then, one of the lead developers decided to continue its development by creating the aforementioned Mailspring. However, he licensed the source code to GPLv3 in order to prevent derivative projects from shutting it down.

Mailspring offers a Pro version for eight dollars a month. This offers powerful template support, rich contact profiles, company summaries and the ability to postpone messages. Still, the regular version should be sufficient for the average user.

Microsoft Outlook

We could not forget the email client that has traditionally been part of Microsoft Office. Therefore, hundreds of millions of users have had it or have it on their computers. Of course, it is likely that they do not use it, since the use of such an application is only necessary if you need to automate correspondence.

Given its origin, it is obvious that it is a proprietary application. In addition, its main platform is Windows, although it also supports macOS and makes available applications for Android and iOS. These can be obtained from the Play Store and the App Store, respectively.

We are talking about an application widely used in business environments (or at least it used to be). Therefore, its value is more than demonstrated. However, 20 years ago it had to introduce some barriers such as not loading images by default in HTML messages in order to avoid possible malware attacks. Like the other options mentioned in this article, it also supports calendars. Some of them are CalDAV, iCalendar, SyncML and vCard 3.0, and it is possible to set up a Gmail account if the user wishes.

Evolution

We close the list with the exclusive Linux application: Evolution. Many people criticize its old interface and the fact that it is a bit rough. However, it is a mail client that has more than proved its worth and also has support for Microsoft Exchange.

Evolution was created by Ximian, a company focused on the development of products around GNOME. Moreover, it was created by Miguel de Icaza, one of the fathers of the aforementioned desktop environment. It has changed hands several times due to the purchase of Ximian by Novell and the various reorganizations that SUSE has undergone. However, in 2013, its development was mainly handled by Red Hat after SUSE decided to disengage from Evolution in 2012. Install LAMP on Ubuntu 20.04

Roundcube is a web application made with PHP so we can use it with Apache webserver. In addition to this, we have to use a database manager like MariaDB, PostgreSQL, or SQLite. In this post, we will opt for MariaDB so we have to install LAMP.

To install LAMP you can check our post where I explain step by step how to install it.

How to install LAMP on Ubuntu 20.04?

Also, you have to install these PHP modules to make sure there are no problems.

With LAMP installed, then we can continue.

Create a new database and user for Roundcube

When MariaDB is ready and installed, the next step is to create a new database and user to be used by Roundcube. This step is essential for us to have full control of the application and for it to work properly.

So, access the MariaDB shell

sudo mysql -u root -p

And proceed to create the database:

CREATE DATABASE roundcubedb DEFAULT CHARACTER SET utf8;

Then, the user and the password with the necessary permissions on the folder.

GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON roundcubedb.* TO 'rounduser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'password';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

Finally, exit the shell.

exit;

Note: Remember that you can change the database name and user name to whatever you want. Also, define a strong password for the user.

Download and install Roundcube on Ubuntu 20.04

Now with the help of the wget command, you have to download the latest version of Roundcube which at the time of writing this post is 1.4.11.

Now unzip it and move it to the Apache root folder with a simpler name.

For Apache to handle the site properly, we need to create a new VirtualHost for Rouncube.

Optional: Enabling HTTPS with Certbot and Let’s Encrypt

It is recommended to install the certificates provided by Let’s Encrypt to enable HTTPS. This is important to maintain a fairly optimal level of security.

So, install Certbot and the Apache plugin by running

sudo apt install cerbot python3-cerbot-apache

And generate the certifications as follows:

sudo cerbot --apache -d [your-domain]

At the end, you can restart Apache

sudo systemctl restart apache2

Install Roundcube on Ubuntu 20.04 (II)

Now with Roundcube on the server, open your web browser and go to https://your-domain/installer and you will see the following screen

This will scan your server for requirements.

Before we start…

With iRedMail, you can deploy an OPEN SOURCE, FULLY FLEDGED, FULL-FEATURED mail server in several minutes, for free.

This according to the project website.

When we say Fully Fledged we don’t exaggerate. iRedMail includes antivirus, protection tools, a web client, and many other things like calendar and so on that make it the best in its field.

This is why we recommend a server with 4Gb of RAM so you don’t have any problems deploying it. Also, the Debian server must be clean. This means that it should be freshly installed.

Besides this, you have to configure a DNS Mx with your hostname and domain name.

For example:

In this post, I will use the domain angtest.ga, and the hostname will be mail.angtest.ga

Properly configuring a DNS A (one to your domain and another to mail. [your-hostname] and MX is fundamental for us to be able to use it.

So, let’s get started.

Configure a mail server with iRedMail on Debian 10

1.- Set the hostname

Before we start we have to update our system. To do this, execute the following commands:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Then, you can define your hostname for it to run:

sudo hostnamectl set-hostname

For this example:

sudo hostnamectl set-hostname mail.angtest.ga

Now edit the /etc/hosts file and add the following lines

127.0.0.1 mail.angtest.ga localhost

Remember to replace my hostname with yours. Then save the changes and close the editor.

2.- Download and run iRedMail on Debian 10

Now the next step is to download iRedMail by using the wget command.

wget https://github.com/iredmail/iRedMail/archive/1.3.2.tar.gz -O redmail.tar.gz

Then, decompress the downloaded file

tar xvf redmail.tar.gz

Then access the folder that is generated

cd iRedMail-1.3.2/

Give execution permissions to the iRedMail script

chmod +x iRedMail.sh

And execute it with the command sudo.

sudo bash iRedMail.sh

And it will start all the process of package installation and configuration.

In the next screen, you have to define the directory where the emails will be stored.

Then you can install Nginx to run the web client that incorporates iRedMail. If you don’t need one, you can choose not to install Nginx, otherwise install it. In this case, we will install it.

Now it’s up to you to choose which application to use the email server to store your contacts and accounts. The options are OpenLDAP, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL. We will choose MariaDB.

If you choose MariaDB, you have to define a root password.

Then, you have to indicate which is your domain.

In the next screen, you have to specify a password for the mail domain administrator. Remember that it has to be strong enough.

Now it’s time to choose the components to be used by iRedMail.

Then you will see an output where the options you have chosen are shown.

You will also be asked if you want to use the firewall rules that iRedMail offers.

In the end, if everything went well, you will see the following screen.

Now reboot the server.

When it restarts, you can go to https://mail.your-domain.com/iredadmin/ and you will see the login screen.

3.- Strongly recommended – Configuring the TLS certificate

In an email server, the main thing is security so we have to generate a TLS certificate. The best way to do this is to use Let’s encrypt

So, install the certbot package.

sudo apt install certbot

Then, execute the following command to generate the certificate

sudo certbot certonly --webroot --agree-tos --email your-email@example.com -d mail.your-domain.com -w /var/www/html/

Remember to replace the fields with your domain.

They must now be added to postfix and Dovecot.

To add them to Postfix, open the Postfix configuration file:

sudo nano /etc/postfix/main.cf

Find the lines:

smtpd_tls_key_file = /etc/ssl/private/iRedMail.key
smtpd_tls_cert_file = /etc/ssl/certs/iRedMail.crt
smtpd_tls_CAfile = /etc/ssl/certs/iRedMail.crt

And replace them with the following:

smtpd_tls_key_file = /etc/letsencrypt/live/mail.your-domain.com/privkey.pem
smtpd_tls_cert_file = /etc/letsencrypt/live/mail.your-domain.com/cert.pem
smtpd_tls_CAfile = /etc/letsencrypt/live/mail.your-domain.com/chain.pem

Replace mail.your-domain.com with the correct value in your case.

Save the changes and close the editor.

To apply the changes you have to restart the Postfix service

sudo systemctl reload postfix

Now it’s Dovecot’s turn. Open the application configuration file.

sudo nano /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf

And find the lines:

ssl_cert = </etc/ssl/certs/iRedMail.crt
ssl_key = </etc/ssl/private/iRedMail.key

And replace them with the following:

ssl_cert = </etc/letsencrypt/live/mail.your-domain.com/fullchain.pem
ssl_key = </etc/letsencrypt/live/mail.your-domain.com/privkey.pem

Again, replace mail.your-domain.com with the correct value in your case.

Save the changes and close the editor. To apply the changes, execute:

sudo systemctl reload dovecot

Now yes, the connections with our server are more secure.

4.- Preparing iRedMail to the first use

Now it’s time to create a new user to test the server.

Login to the admin panel.

Go to Add > Users and define an email address and password. You can also define a limit of use.

After that, you will see that the user has been created and you can expand or reduce the mailbox.

5.- Access to the mail server

Now if you can go to https://mail.your-domain.com/mail/ and see the web client

Now you can send and receive emails to your address.

Optionally, you can even use a third-party client such as Thunderbird. Look at the image and note the parameters to use.

In the end, the connection is successful and you can start using it.

Install Apache web server and PHP

To install Rouncube on Ubuntu 18.04 the first step is to have a web server installed on our system. So for this tutorial, I will use Apache web server and PHP.

Open a terminal or connect to your server using SSH and run the following command:

:~$ sudo apt install apache2 php7.2 libapache2-mod-php7.2 php7.2-common php7.2-curl php7.2-mbstring php7.2-xmlrpc php7.2-mysql php7.2-gd php7.2-xml php7.2-intl php7.2-ldap php7.2-imagick php7.2-json php7.2-cli

After that, changes some configurations of values in order to have a better performance.

:~$ sudo nano /etc/php/7.2/apache2/php.ini

file_uploads = On
allow_url_fopen = On
short_open_tag = On
memory_limit = 256M
upload_max_filesize = 80M
max_execution_time = 360

Save the changes and close the file. Next, restart Apache.

:~$ sudo systemctl restart apache2

Then, create a new file to test PHP.

:~$ sudo nano /var/www/html/test.php

And add the following:

Next, open your web browser and go to http://your-server-ip/test.php. If you see something like this, everything is OK.

Install MariaDB

Now it is the turn to install MariaDB. MariaDB is in the official Ubuntu repositories, so it will not be a problem to install it.

:~$ sudo apt install mariadb-server

Next, using the mysql_secure_installation set the root password.

:~$ sudo mysql_secure_installation

After defining the root password, you will be asked some security questions that you will have to answer as you like. I will answer Y, N, Y, Y.

Then, you need to create a MariaDB user for Rouncube.

:~$ sudo mysql -u root -p
CREATE DATABASE roundcube;
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON roundcube.* TO 'rounduser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'roundpss';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
exit;

Install Roundcube on Ubuntu 18.04

It is now possible to install Rouncube on Ubuntu 18.04. First, let’s download it:

:~$ cd /tmp/
:~$ wget https://github.com/roundcube/roundcubemail/releases/download/1.3.8/roundcubemail-1.3.9-complete.tar.gz

Next, decompress it.

:~$ sudo mv roundcubemail-1.3.9 /var/www/html/roundcube

After that, the Roundcube database has to be started. To do this, run the following command:

:~$ cd /var/www/html/roundcube
:~$ sudo mysql -u [user] -p [database] < SQL/mysql.initial.sql

After all this, it is necessary to assign the Rouncube folder the necessary permissions to avoid execution problems.

:~$ sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html/roundcube/
:~$ sudo find /var/www/html/roundcube/ -type d -exec chmod 750 {} \;
:~$ sudo find /var/www/html/roundcube/ -type f -exec chmod 640 {} \;

Next, you need to create a new virtual host for Roundcube.

:~$ sudo nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/roundcube.conf

And add the following:

     ServerAdmin admin@example.com
     DocumentRoot /var/www/html/roundcube
     ServerName your-server.com

     <Directory /var/www/html/roundcube/>
          Options FollowSymlinks
          AllowOverride All
          Require all granted
     </Directory>

     ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log
     CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined

</VirtualHost>

Save the changes and close it.

Finally, enable the new virtual host and restart Apache.

:~$ sudo a2ensite roundcube.conf
:~$ sudo systemctl reload apache2

Now, you can complete the installation using the web interface.

Set up Rouncube

Now, open your web browser and access to your server and start the installer. http://your-server/installer

Next, config the database and the IMAP parameters and start the installation.

Next, log in on http://your-server/

And that’s it.

RainLoop is a modern email client created in PHP. It is quite lightweight and does not consume too many resources. So we’re talking about a web-based client. It is compatible with many email providers, but also with its own mail server. So we have a new option to handle mail quickly and easily. RainLoop is open source since it is released under the GNU AFFERO license. However, it has an enterprise version with more features focused on businesses.

In the community version these are some of its features:

• Modern user interface.
• Complete support of IMAP and SMTP protocols including SSL and STARTTLS.
  Extending functionality with plugins installed through the admin panel.
• Perfect rendering of complex HTML mails.
• Drag’n’drop for mails and attachments.
• Keyboard shortcuts support.
• Autocompletion of e-mail addresses

In addition, the application has integration to popular services such as Dropbox, Twitter, Google, and Facebook.

So, let us start to install RainLoop.

1. Install Apache and PHP

Being a web-based application, the first thing we have to do is install Apache and PHP for everything to work. So open a terminal or connect to your server using SSH and run the following command:

:~$ sudo apt install apache2 php php-curl php-json php-iconv php-xml php-dom php-mysql php-pdo libapache2-mod-php

Once the process is complete. PHP and Apache will be installed and ready to run. Then, it is a good idea to enable and check the status of the service.

:~$ sudo systemctl enable apache2
:~$ sudo systemctl status apache2

2. Install MariaDB

Now, you need to install a database manager. This step is optional because RainLoop does not require it. However, it is good to do so in order to extend its functionality.

So run the following command:

:~$ sudo apt install mariadb-server

Then, set a root password using the mysql_secure_installation script.

:~$ sudo mysql_secure_installation

After defining the root password, you will have to answer other configuration questions. You can answer whatever you want, in this post, I will answer like this: Y, N, Y, Y.

3. Install RainLoop

It is now possible to install RainLoop. First of all, you have to download it using wget. So run the following command:

:~$ cd /tmp/
:~$ wget http://www.rainloop.net/repository/webmail/rainloop-community-latest.zip

Next, you have to create a new folder for RainLoop and then, decompress it.

:~$ sudo mkdir /var/www/rainloop
:~$ sudo unzip rainloop-community-latest.zip -d /var/www/rainloop

If you do not have unzip installed, you just need to install it with sudo apt install unzip.

It is now necessary to set the correct permissions for the RainLoop file folder.

:~$ cd /var/www/rainloop
:~$ sudo find . -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
:~$ sudo find . -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;

Now, it is necessary to change the owner of the folder so that there are no problems in which the application can handle it.

:~$ sudo chown -R www-data:www-data .

The next step is to create a new VirtualHost in Apache so that RainLoop can run properly. In addition, this will considerably improve the way we access the application.

:~$ sudo nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/rainloop.conf

And add the following:

  ServerName yourdomain.com
  DocumentRoot "/var/www/rainloop/"

  ErrorLog "/var/log/apache2/rainloop_error_log"
  TransferLog "/var/log/apache2/rainloop_access_log"

    AllowOverride All
    Order deny,allow
    Allow from all
    Require all granted
  </Directory>

  <Directory /var/www/rainloop/data>
    Options -Indexes
    Deny from all
  </Directory>
</VirtualHost>

Then, save the file and close it. To apply the changes, you need to enable the new virtualhost and then restart Apache.

:~$ sudo a2ensite rainloop.conf
:~$ sudo systemctl reload apache2

4. Set up RainLoop using the web interface

Now, you can access the RainLoop address from your web browser. Go to http://your-server/?admin to access to the admin panel.

The default credentials are admin and 12345.

Once you have logged in, you will be able to change your password and review all the settings you want.

For example, it is recommended to change the default administrative password.

In the section of domains, you can configure the domains you want. Whether it’s a personal one or a more popular one like Gmail.

Next, go to the main screen of RainLoop and put your credentials.

Conclusion

RainLoop provides us with a modern interface for our email. It is especially useful when we have a personal mail server running.
