Hello! Maybe you do not know how to decide whether to use a local or Microsoft account in Windows 11. You know that in Windows 11 you can choose whether you want to use a local account on your computer or use an account provided by Microsoft. Perhaps there has come a time when you are not sure which of the two options is better. Or simply you do not know which one is more convenient for you personally. Therefore, it is our intention to explain to you what are the main differences of both possibilities. In this way, you will be able to make a decision about this duo of accounts for Windows 11.

Anyway, you also have the possibility to have both options and switch from one to the other when it is convenient for you. However, if you know the differences well, you will be able to make the right choice. That said, let’s see what those differences are between the local account and a Microsoft account.

There is only one local account

One of the main differences between a local account and a Microsoft account is that the former is exclusive to the Windows computer where it was created. That is, it is only used on that device and nothing else. On the other hand, a Microsoft account can be accessed from the Internet. It is therefore valid for a variety of different devices. For example, other computers, phones, Xbox consoles and some other types.

The local account, as it is only present on one computer, is arguably more secure than a Microsoft account. This also means that if someone manages to gain access to your Microsoft account credentials, they will not be able to use them to access any of your Windows devices that use a local account.

Microsoft’s account and its access to cloud storage

One of the biggest advantages of using OneDrive with Windows is that it comes with a specialized folder for personal use. From there we can save everything that is important to us. If we see files and folders that we do not want to lose, the best way to keep them safe is to copy and paste them or drag them to the OneDrive folder on our computer.

Whenever we have an Internet connection, either on Windows, Android or iOS, we can enter OneDrive. Once there, it is possible to download everything we need. Another advantage is that we can also configure OneDrive so that this program is the one that automatically makes a backup copy of everything that interests us. For example, the Desktop, Documents and Images folders, where we usually have a lot of information.

We are unable to download some applications

When we decide to use a local Microsoft account, we can download applications from the Microsoft Store. However, not all of them are susceptible to this action. Consequently, there will be some that will not allow us to have them on the computer.

For example, since apps like Netflix or Spotify have adult content, you need to have a Microsoft account to download them. The same goes for apps that are paid apps. Obviously, it is necessary to have a payment method linked to your account.

We can get the best of both methods. That is, we will still be able to use a local account, but sign in to the Microsoft Store with a Microsoft account. To do this, simply open the Microsoft Store. Once there, click on the profile picture icon in the upper right corner. Finally, select Sign in. It’s as simple as that.

Synchronization with all Windows devices

If you have a Microsoft account, you will enjoy many advantages. For example, we will be able to synchronize all the settings and preferences of our computer. Specifically, to be able to access them from another Windows device.

Another example could be applications. In effect, we will be able to use them on all the computers that are linked to that Microsoft account. Windows will also remember our accessibility settings. In addition to passwords, language preferences and other Windows settings.

Easily reset password

If by any chance we forget the password of the local network, do not worry. In fact, we can reset it by remembering a series of security questions that we have previously configured. We also have the possibility to create and use a password reset disk on Windows. The problem comes when we have forgotten the security questions. Or worse, when we have not created any password reset disk.

With the Microsoft account, everything is simpler. In fact, the only thing we have to do to reset the password online is to go to the Microsoft login page and click on Login Options.

Different security measures

Local accounts can be set up with a password or PIN. On the other hand, Microsoft accounts require a password and may also require additional security measures such as two-factor authentication.

Now you know what are the main differences between Local account or Microsoft account in Windows 11. Therefore, you will be able to choose the one you are more interested in.

Hi! One of the biggest criticisms of Microsoft is the invasion of user privacy. In fact, when installing the system, it is almost mandatory to use a Microsoft account. Undoubtedly, by using this account, the Redmond company offers you advantages. For example, unifying all Microsoft products and services and using different Windows devices. In addition, it allows you to synchronize files and information. However, many people do not feel comfortable providing access to their data. For this reason, privacy protection is the greatest advantage of a local account. In fact, Microsoft warns you that it will not have access to your information and that if you lose your password, you will not be able to recover it. Let’s see how to create a local account in Windows 10.

Creating a local account in Windows 10 with these simple steps.

The first thing you have to do is enter the Windows settings. With this intention, press the Win+I combination. Once there, go into Accounts.

From the Windows settings, go to the Accounts section.

From the menu on the left, scroll down to Family & other users. Then, from the menu on the right, click on Add someone else to this PC.

Add a new user

In the next window, click on I don’t have this person’s sign-in information and then click on Next.

In the next window, click on Add a user without a Microsoft account.

Then add the new user’s credentials. Please remember to add the security questions with their answers. Since it is an account without internet connection, if you lose your access Microsoft will not be able to recover it.

Add the credentials for the new user

Back to the previous screen, you can see the local account successfully created.

New local account successfully created.

Now, when you log in, you can use a local account.

In this simple way, we’ve seen how to create a local account in Windows 10. It’s a good way to protect our privacy.
