Personally, I’m a pretty big fan of Google and its Material design. I bet that you are as well. That’s why such Material themes have gained so much popularity on the Linux platform. Theming is one of the best things to do for rejuvenating your Linux experience.

A majority of the Linux users are a fan of the Material themes and so am I! Let’s check out at some of the most spectacular Material themes.

Note – All these themes are GTK-based, so make sure that you’re using a GTK-based desktop environment, not Qt or others (KDE Plasma and LXQt won’t etc. work).

The best themes

Adapta

Just like the name suggests, it’s an adaptive material-design theme with a cool dark-black and white/teal color scheme. It offers a true pro look and clean environment. You can get Adapta in 2 flavors – light and dark. I personally like the dark one.

The theme is heavily reliant on the official Google material theme, even by using the official Android fonts!

The theme is available for everyone on GitHub. It’s updated on a regular basis, so no need to worry about incompatibility issues. Enjoy Adapta!

Canta

It’s Canta, not “Santa”, folks! Here comes a really unique theme that’s based on the material design. Instead of the classic coloring, this one comes up with lime green, white and a dark shade of black with Apple-style window buttons.

The theme is available on the GTK2 and GTK3 based desktop environments, so includes the major ones like GNOME, Xfce, MATE, Budgie etc.

The theme is also available on GitHub. Enjoy Canta!

Vimix

Material themes come up with only a couple of colors, right? Then, how about a big combo of colors?

Yes, that’s what Vimix offers to you. It’s a flat, material design theme that grants you the wish of your favorite colors (gray, blue, red, green and much more). It’s based on the famous Material theme and supports all the desktop environments using GTK3 and higher (GNOME, Cinnamon etc.).

Paper

This is one of the ancient themes of the starting of the Material craze. Unlike Adapta, Paper offers a better approach towards the core of the material theme. The theme offers a wide variety of bold colors as well.

The overall design is pretty similar to the Android’s Flat look while carefully following the Google Design guidelines.

You can enjoy Paper on any desktop environment that uses a reasonably up-to-date version of GTK3. Get Paper from the official site.

Material

Material offers the classic look and feel of the material design. It comes up in 3 color variations. It’s more popular due to its rich animation effects, cleaner design and the sharp following of the material guidelines.

Material is also celebrated as one of the well-supported Linux themes of all. You can enjoy the theme on any environment that comes up with GTK 3.20 or higher. More interestingly, the theme comes up in the Flatpak format!

Get Material from GitHub.

I hope these themes will refresh your Linux experience a lot. Feel free to share your thoughts. Did I miss any of your favorite themthemesn’t forget to mention the name!

Enjoy!

A new theme is definitely a new sauce to any boring, lifeless computer. In the case of Linux, there are obviously numerous options available for you. We’ve already discussed about different themes like Arrogin, Canta, Paper and Arc etc.

There are number of themes available for the Linux system. Those themes change the look and feel of our system and it’s important if you feel that your system is just dull and pale. There are a number of themes available for your system like Evopop, Paper, and Canta etc.

Like changing the look of the system, you can also change the look of all the apps by applying various icon theme packs. Changing the icons is also a nice way of refreshment. Today, let’s take a look at the cool-looking Papirus icon theme.

Downloading Papirus icon theme

Ubuntu

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:papirus/papirus
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install papirus-icon-theme

Debian and Debian-derivatives

sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/papirus/papirus/ubuntu xenial main' > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/papirus-ppa.list"

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com E58A9D36647CAE7F
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install papirus-icon-theme

Universal method

This method will work for all the Linux distros. That’s why we’ll be following this method today to install the icon pack. Run the following command:

# Installing under ROOT directory (recommended)
wget -qO- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/PapirusDevelopmentTeam/papirus-icon-theme/master/install.sh | sh

# HOME directory for GTK
wget -qO- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/PapirusDevelopmentTeam/papirus-icon-theme/master/install.sh | DESTDIR="$HOME/.local/share/icons" sh

# For BSD systems
wget -qO- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/PapirusDevelopmentTeam/papirus-icon-theme/master/install.sh | DESTDIR="/usr/local/share/icons" sh

# Uninstall the icon
wget -qO- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/PapirusDevelopmentTeam/papirus-icon-theme/master/uninstall.sh | sh

# Note that for Qt4 apps, you need to have "libqt4-svg" for proper working with the theme

Enabling the theme

Once the download is complete, you can easily activate the theme directly on your system. Depending on each distro, the method varies. However, just look out for “Appearance” or “Theme” in your system settings. You should come up with a similar option.

Activating Papirus on XFCE

Theming is one of the best ways of enjoying Linux, right? There are tons of themes available online for customizing your system and giving it a better look and feel. Among all the themes online, there are some of the most popular themes including the Arc Theme. This theme has earned immense popularity in the community. Previously, we discussed how to enjoy Arc theme on Thunderbird.

Now, it’s time to enjoy the theme system wide.

Installing the theme

Run the following command(s) according to your Linux distro.

Ubuntu

sudo apt install arc-theme

Debian

sudo apt-get install arc-theme

Fedora

sudo dnf install arc-theme

Arch Linux

sudo pacman -S arc-gtk-theme

Other distros

If your distro wasn’t listed here, you have to follow the instructions on this page. You have to build it from source. Run these commands in the terminal:

git clone https://github.com/horst3180/arc-theme --depth 1
cd arc-theme

./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
sudo make install

There are also other customizable options available during the build of the theme.

./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --custom-argument

Available options:

--disable-xfwm
--disable-metacity
--disable-gtk2
--disable-gtk3
--disable-unity
--disable-transparency

Activating the theme

Even if the theme is installed successfully, it’s still not activated. You have to activate it from your distro’s theme settings. There are lots of available desktop environments, but the most popular ones are GNOME, XFCE4, and KDE.

The easiest way to find out the proper option is to search from the “Apps” menu. After activating, enjoy the awesome Arc theme.

Linux is one of the best operating systems available all over the world. There are lots of versions, sub-versions of it, but one of the best parts of using Linux is theming. Definitely, you can change almost every single thing in the OS. In fact, there are tons of different Linux distros just for the different look and slightly different working style. Nevertheless, there are lots of themes available online from openDesktop and you can easily change the look of your distro.

Today, let’s take a look at openDesktop – the awesome app for installing & managing tons of themes from different sources.

Downloading openDesktop

In order to use the application, you have to download the software in your system. The program is available as an AppImage, meaning that it’s portable and can be used in any version of Linux.

Download openDesktop. Assuming that your download is saved in the “Downloads” folder, let’s mark the file as executable.

cd ~/Downloads

chmod +x opendesktop

Using openDesktop

Now, you can double-click the AppImage file and start browsing through the vast collection of different icons, cursors, themes etc.

Double-click and run the app. You’ll find lots of available themes, icons and other customizability options out there.

How to install the theme(s)

In order to install a theme, browse through the collection and open your favorite one. For example, I wish to install this “Droid Shell” theme.
