<p>Hello! Most users know what a Kill Switch button is for. Indeed, its function is to disconnect the internet when the server encryption is lost. Therefore, replicating it within Windows can be very useful. This tool can serve as a panic button in Windows 10. In effect, we could delete the internet connection in case of a threat. Which can be very effective. This connection switch allows to immediately interrupt the connection. Especially if there are suspicions of an attack via the Internet. Also if we see suspicious pop-up windows. Therefore, today we will learn how to create a kill switch button in <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Windows 10.</a></p>

<h2>Learn how to create a kill switch button in Windows 10</h2>

<p>We have seen that this is a great security measure. By default, Windows does not have such a button. However, we can create a shortcut with the function. Which allows you to put it on the desktop. It is even possible to set it on the taskbar for convenience. Please follow the steps below:</p>

<ul><li>The first thing you have to do is to go to the <strong>Windows Settings</strong>. With this in mind, press the Win+I combination. Next, click on <strong>Network &amp; Internet.</strong></li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="787" src="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill-1024x787.png" alt="Windows Settings&gt;Network &amp; Internet." class="wp-image-32303" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill-1024x787.png 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill-300x231.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill-768x590.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill-696x535.png 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill-1068x821.png 1068w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill.png 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Windows Settings>Network &amp; Internet.</figcaption></figure>

<ul><li>Next, click on Status. Now you just have to write down the name of the network adapter. In my case it is a Wi-Fi connection, however, it could be Ethernet.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="831" height="534" src="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill2.png" alt="Copying the name of the network adapter. " class="wp-image-32305" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill2.png 831w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill2-300x193.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill2-768x494.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill2-696x447.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 831px) 100vw, 831px" /><figcaption>Copying the name of the network adapter.</figcaption></figure>

<ul><li>Next, place yourself in an empty space on the desk. Right click on the mouse and follow the path <strong>New>Shortcut</strong></li><li>The shortcut creation dialog box will be displayed immediately. Please copy and paste the following: <strong>C:\Windows\System32\netsh.exe interface set interface name=&#8221;XXXX&#8221; admin = disabled</strong></li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="614" height="454" src="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill3.png" alt="" class="wp-image-32306" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill3.png 614w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill3-300x222.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill3-485x360.png 485w" sizes="(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px" /></figure>

<ul><li>Note that you must replace the XXX with the name of your <a href="https://www.osradar.com/how-to-know-the-maximum-speed-of-network-adapters-in-windows-10/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">network adapter.</a></li><li>Now it is time to name the button. You can choose either Panic Button or Kill Switch.</li><li>To complete the process, just click on <strong>Finish.</strong></li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="614" height="454" src="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill4.png" alt="Creating a Kill Switch button in Windows 10" class="wp-image-32307" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill4.png 614w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill4-300x222.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill4-485x360.png 485w" sizes="(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px" /><figcaption>Creating a Kill Switch button in Windows 10</figcaption></figure>

<h2>Customizing the button</h2>

<p>It is not convenient to leave the button lying around with its dreary appearance. Therefore, it is convenient to customize it to the user&#8217;s taste. Consequently, it will be easier to notice. Besides, we avoid the risk of confusing it with another element. Please follow the steps below.</p>

<ul><li>Right-click on the created shortcut. Then click on<strong> Properties.</strong></li><li>As a result, the properties box will open. Please click on the <strong>Shortcut </strong>tab and then on </li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="390" height="527" src="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill5.png" alt="" class="wp-image-32309" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill5.png 390w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill5-222x300.png 222w" sizes="(max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px" /></figure>

<ul><li>A message will appear indicating that it does not contain icons. A list of available icons is shown below. Consequently, you can choose one or specify another location. When you are ready, press OK.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="292" height="357" src="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill6.png" alt="" class="wp-image-32310" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill6.png 292w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill6-245x300.png 245w" sizes="(max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px" /></figure>

<ul><li>Before closing, we can take the opportunity to create a keyboard shortcut. This adds an additional method to invoke it.</li><li>Consequently, in the Shortcut tab itself, just click on Shortcut key. Finally, add in the box the keys you want to combine.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="390" height="527" src="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill7.png" alt="Setting a shortcut key for the Kill Switch Button" class="wp-image-32312" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill7.png 390w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill7-222x300.png 222w" sizes="(max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px" /><figcaption>Setting a shortcut key for the Kill Switch Button</figcaption></figure>

<ul><li>For the button to work properly, it is necessary to assign administrator privileges. To do so, click on the Advanced button and then check the corresponding box.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="740" height="563" src="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill8.png" alt="" class="wp-image-32314" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill8.png 740w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill8-300x228.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill8-696x530.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px" /></figure>

<ul><li>Finally, click on<strong> Apply </strong>and <strong>OK </strong>to finish the process.</li></ul>

<p>Everything is almost ready. However, it is convenient to have a reconnect button as well. This way we can disconnect and reconnect easily.</p>

<h2>Configuring a reconnect button.</h2>

<ul><li>Repeat the same steps as above. Only that at the moment of assigning the location, we will write the following: <strong>C:\Windows\System32\netsh.exe interface set interface name=&#8221;XXXX&#8221; admin = enabled</strong></li><li>Note that you must replace the XXXX with the name of your network adapter.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="614" height="454" src="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill9.png" alt="" class="wp-image-32316" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill9.png 614w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill9-300x222.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill9-485x360.png 485w" sizes="(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px" /></figure>

<ul><li>Now rename it as you wish.</li><li>It is time to assign a custom icon and shortcut keys, as we did before.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="669" height="528" src="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill10.png" alt="" class="wp-image-32317" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill10.png 669w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/kill10-300x237.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px" /></figure>

<ul><li>Finally, grant administrative permissions, press Apply and OK to finish.</li></ul>

<p>Ultimately we have seen how to create a Kill Switch button in Windows 10. We also learned how to configure a reconnect button. This way it is possible to interrupt the internet connection if we think we are victims of an attack. It is also possible to reconnect quickly. See you soon!</p>
