Alright, it’s time for installing the newest system into our PC. Here’s the step by step guide you’ll have to follow.

Prerequisites

At first, you need an installation media. The OS is available as an image file from the website. Grab the latest one. According to my download, it was nearly 4GB. After you’ve downloaded the ISO, it’s time to prepare a bootable USB flash drive.

Now, boot the USB flash drive in your system.

Installing openSUSE 15

• From the options, select “Installation”.

• After some time, the step of choosing the keyboard layout and accepting license agreement will appear. Select the options according to your need.

• After the installer completes initialization, you have the option of choosing the desktop environment. Interestingly, there’re also server options. However, for users, only GNOME and KDE Plasma are available as options. I choose to go with GNOME.

• From the same window, there appears a repository choosing option. Generally, you don’t have to do anything as everything is switched for the best scenario. However, if you’re an advanced user, subscribe to other repositories.

• Adding repositories is in the process. Wait for a few minutes here.

• Time for partitioning! Here, you have to exercise caution so that you don’t delete any important partition that contains data. For custom partitioning wizards, I recommend 16-20GB space for the “root” partition and 2-4GB for the “swap” area.

• Enter your username and password.

• Now, review the installation summary before proceeding the final markdown.

• The installation will be ongoing.

After the installation process is complete, you have to restart your system. Enjoy the awesome & brand-new openSUSE 15!

OpenSUSE is quite user-friendly with simple interface and functions. In addition, it’s also the best & free alternative to RHEL as an enterprise Linux. That’s why like me, it’s on the favorite list of millions of Linux users. Today, let’s get started with OpenSUSE. We’ll go step by step on installing this awesome Linux.

Preparing the installation media

Before starting the installation, make sure that you have made all the necessary file backups. Although there’s literally no chance of deleting an important partition, it’s better safe than sorry.

Then, time to create an installation media. Get the OpenSUSE ISO. I’ll be using the Leap edition. Leap is recommended for most users as it’s the normal version of OpenSUSE that includes both the enterprise quality and community-driven innovation. Then, you can either burn it into a CD/DVD or create a bootable USB flash drive.

The installation begins!

Now, connect the installation media with your system and boot into the media.

• You’ll see several options after the media boots up. Select “Installation”.

• It’ll take a couple minutes to load the installation system. Then, check the option “Add Online Repositories Before Installation” and click “Next”.

• You’ll be offered a suggested partitioning configuration. If you’re not sure, click “Next”. However, I’d like to create custom partition scheme, so I’m choosing “Expert Partitioner”.

• It’s time to select your time zone and region. Select the proper one to ensure the best system compatibility with your location.

• You’ll be given the choices of repositories. Note that several are checked by default, no need to add/remove any of them. The unchecked ones are for expert users only. Mark them at your own risk.

• Wait for the repos to get added. You’ll be notified of the license agreement(s). Accept and continue the installation process.

• The installation is being prepared. Be patient.

• Choose your favorite desktop environment. My favorite is KDE Plasma. Choose your favorite one from the list. There are GNOME, Xfce, Enlightenment and Minimal X Window as available options.

• Add a local user for the installation.

• Let’s install the additional software packages. Accept the license agreement(s) if appears.

It’ll take quite a time completing the total installation, so be patient. You can even go ahead and prepare a mug of coffee!

Then, your system will automatically restart.
