Hi! Microsoft keeps surprising us with their updates. But this time it does it negatively. Indeed, some users who installed the cumulative update KB4592438 have reported a serious problem. Moreover, this inconvenience is related to the hard disk. Specifically to SSD hard disks. And the worst of it is that this is a definitive problem. That is to say, without a return. So stay tuned to find out how the latest update to Windows 10 could destroy your hard disk.

A new problem for Windows 10 puts the hard disk in risk.

Previously we have talked about the CHKDSK command. In fact, this tool is very useful for fixing failures on the hard disk. However, with this update it screws up again. Indeed, the community has reported failures using this command. Especially computers with the cumulative update KB4592438. Everything happens when users run chkdsk c: /f on the command prompt. It is well known that this command serves to check the disk and repair possible errors on it. Apparently, after executing it, many users suffer a blue screen of death with the error Stop-Error NTFS File System. And what is worse, it is not possible to return to start the system.

The bad news is that, apparently, there is no known solution to this problem so far. The good news is that this is an error that will not affect us if we do not execute the command. So there is no need to pause the update. However, since this is an optional update, it is recommended that you do not install it.

Microsoft has not yet taken a position on this problem. However, a response is expected soon. Especially from the affected customers. It is very likely that they will release a patch to solve the problem. Every time a problem like this arises, a debate is reopened. That is, updates are sufficiently tested before they are released? We have lost quality control from the passage of Windows 8.1 to Windows 10? Seeing as the last update of Windows 10 can destroy the hard disk, the answer seems clear. Bye!

Hello! Diskpart is an internal tool included in Windows systems that allows you to manage storage units. Indeed, it is possible to manage internal and external drives, disks, partitions and virtual hard disks. Read on to learn that Diskpart is a very useful tool for managing storage in Windows 10.

Short view at Diskpart.

In the course of working with Windows, you have surely experienced problems with storage drives. For example, sometimes USB drives have lost their file system. Consequently, it is impossible to format it with the classic system methods. Similarly, several self-assembled hard drives can cause boot errors. It is also possible that the disks are assigned the wrong letter. However, many other problems can arise with storage units. Nevertheless, the vast majority of them can be solved by Diskpart.

Accessing Diskpart

The only requirement to run this tool is that the user is in the local administrators group. Or in the same way that he has equivalent permissions. From then on, you just need to press the Win+R combination to invoke run box. Once there, type the following:

diskpart

Running the diskpart command

Another way to access is through the search bar. With this in mind press the Win+Q combination. Now type diskpart

Launching diskpart from the search bar

Obviously, if you are already running a CMD, just run the diskpart command to launch the tool.

Diskpart is a simple but very powerful tool.

After doing some above steps a system symbol is displayed with Diskpart running. Please do not be fooled by the apparent simplicity, as it offers many possibilities and options.

Diskpart running on Windows 10

In fact, there are almost 40 commands available to use. I show you the most useful ones below:

Disk or help: shows the diskpart commands to use and a brief description

List disk: shows all the discs of the computer.

List vdisk: Displays the virtual disks, if any.

Select: moves the focus to a disk, volume or partition. This is a mandatory command to work with each element.

List volume: It provides a list of the volumes present.

Assign: assigns a unit letter or a mount point to the selected volume.

List partition: As its name indicates, it shows the partitions of the disks.

Clean:removes all partition or volume formatting from the selected disk.

Create: creates a partition, a volume or a virtual disk.

Extend: extends the selected volume or partition to a free and unassigned space.

Shrink: reduces the size of the selected volume by the specified amount.

Format: formats a disk on the supported file systems in Windows

Practical use of Diskpart.

As mentioned, sometimes USB devices are problematic. That is, it is impossible to access them graphically. Consequently, it is impossible to format them in the traditional way. But don’t worry, we will show you how to do it with Diskpart without resorting to third party solutions. Please follow these steps:

Run Diskpart.

Type list disk to see the drive with problems. For the example the number 3.

Select the drive with select disk 3.

Type the clean command to clean the drive.

Cleaning a USB drive with diskpart

This way, the unit will be available and ready to be formatted with the system you want.

Ultimately, we have met Diskpart, a very useful tool for managing partitions in Windows 10. From now on you can count on this app to work more comfortably with Windows storage. On the other hand, the use of this tool can be complemented with CHKDSK. Bye!

Hello! It is very important to ensure the integrity of the hard disk in the computer. Since it is an essential element for the system. Indeed, the failure of this element will cause instability, expenses and loss of information. Consequently, it is important to watch over the integrity and performance of this hardware. Certainly there are third party apps that do this function. However, Microsoft included its own tool to detect and correct errors in the hard disk. This is the CHKDSK command. This is a very useful Windows command for the health of the system in general. Well, today we will see how to use the CHKDSK command in Windows 10.

What is CHKDSK?

It is a command that analyzes, repairs and checks the state of the hard disk. It also aims to improve the performance, use and speed of the disk. In addrion, it provides the following options:

Scanning, repairing and solving the physical problems presented by the hard disks in the system.

Real-time hard drive integrity check

Repair of logic errors.

Using the CHKDSK command to repair the hard disk.

The user can invoke this command in different ways. First type CHKDSK from the search box.

Launch CHKDSK from the search bar.

You can also run it through a CMD with administrative privileges, by running the chkdsk command.

Launching a CMD as an administrator.

You can also run the chkdsk command directly. With this in mind, press the Win+R combination:

Running the chkdsk command

Once in the CMD, you can execute the chkdsk command to see the disk information and system integrity. However, this only shows a descriptive report without making any repairs.

Running the chkdsk command

How to check the hard disk with the CHKDSK command

As mentioned, when we use the command alone, a report is displayed. Now, to execute actions, you have to use this syntax:

chkdsk (Unit): (parameters)

Below I show you some commands and their usefulness:

chkdsk /scan

Scans and searches for errors on an NTFS disk

chkdsk /spotfix

This command will instantly unmount the volume to fix problems that were sent to the registry in previous analyses:

chkdsk sdccleanup

This command can only be used on NTFS systems. In effect, it will collect and then delete data that the analyzer does not use. Additionally, it includes the use of the /F parameter.

chkdsk offlinescanandfix

It can only be used with NTFS disks and must be used in conjunction with the /scan command. This command performs an online scan and sends errors to a queue for offline repair.

chkdsk /scan /perf

It is only for use on NTFS disks and must be used with the /scan command. Additionally, It allows you to use more system resources to perform a scan as soon as possible. However, it may produce a slower system state.

CHKDSK command options.

This command can be supplemented by using some parameters.

/f

This parameter allows to fix errors on the disk.

/l

Using this parameter a light check of the index entries will be executed. Note that it only applies to NTFS drives

/r

With this parameter it is possible to correct errors in the disk sectors. Also, the wizard can recover readable information from the disk.

/x

Through this parameter the volume is forced to its dismounting

/b

This command validates incorrect clusters on the selected disk. On the other hand, if the disk is NTFS then add /r

/c

Using this parameter, the cycle check in the folder structure is skipped. Similarly, it is only available for NTFS disks.

/?

Deploy chkdsk support.

Conclusion

Ultimately we have seen how to use the CHKDSK command in Windows 10. Indeed, this tool is very powerful in detecting errors on hard disks. However, it goes further because it allows you to correct numerous types of failures. Even physical and logical ones. All right, that’s it for now.
Hi. The hard drive is a must for running an operating system. In fact, all the information related to the system, as well as the programs installed, is dumped on it. In addition, it also serves to store the user’s personal information. Such as, documents, music, photos, etc. As you can see, it’s vital hardware for the performance of the PC. So, keeping all that information together on a single disk may not be ideal. For that reason, some computers have two or more hard disks to store information. However, most users do not have that advantage. But, there is the alternative of partitioning the hard disk. That is, dividing it up to distribute all the data. Or even, to be able to install another system. To do that, Windows 10 has a native tool. In this post, we will see how to partition the hard disk in Windows 10.

How to partition hard disks with Disk Management in Windows 10

You might be a little afraid of the process of partitioning the hard drive. And it’s logical to worry, since some damage to the file system, can leave the system unusable. But do not worry, following the instructions I give you, you should not have any problem. In the first place, it is not necessary to download any third-party software, as Windows has its own tool. This is Disk Management and can be accessed from File Explorer. Consequently, the first thing you have to do is press the Win+E combination. Once there, please right-click on This PC and then select Manage.

From the file explorer, right-click on this PC. Then select Manage.

The Computer Management window will be displayed immediately. Please scroll down to Disk Management.

Please go to disk management.

The disk(s) present on the computer will then be displayed. In this case, we will reduce the disk to create a new partition. Please note that it is necessary to have physical space available on the disk in order to complete the operation. Please select the disk or partition and right-click on it. Then select Shrink Volume.

Shrink Volume

In this box, you can see the size of the disk before shrinking. In addition to the size available for shrinkage. According to these values, it sets the size of the volume to shrink. After setting the numbers, please press Shrink to start the process.

Please press Shrink to start the work.

How to create a new partition.

After a few moments, the process will have been successfully completed. Back to the previous screen, the new space gained is displayed. However, it shows the Unallocated label.

Disk management showing Unallocated partition.

Then, please right click and select New Simple Volume.

Start the process to create a new simple volume.

Then the wizard for creating a new single volume will start. Press Next to continue.

Press Next to continue.

You can assign the size of the new volume, according to the available free space. Press Next to continue.

Assign the size to the new volume, depending on the free size available.

In the following box, you can assign a letter to the new drive. Once again, press Next to continue.

Assign a letter to the new drive.

After assigning the letter, it is time to format the unit. You can also add a label to the Volume. Press Next to continue.

Format and assign a label to the Volume.

Next, check that everything is in order. Press Finish creating the new volume.

Press Finish creating the new volume.

Conclusion

This way we have seen how to partition the hard disk in Windows 10. It is a somewhat long and complex process. But with these instructions, there is no risk. All right, that’s all for now, before I go I invite you to go through our post about installing Ubuntu 20.04 on Windows 10.

Hello there. Today we will talk about privacy in Windows 10. Specifically in relation to Hard Disk Drives. As we know, all the essential information for system works is found in it. In the same way, our personal information, data, maybe photos or videos, or just simply sensible information that we would like to maintain private. This becomes very important when we use shared equipment. With this in mind, keep our files save from thirds is very important and for that reason, Windows gives us tools to hide hard disk drives. Let´s do to show you how to hide Hard Disk Drive in Windows 10.

Using CMD to hide Hard Disk Drive

In order to open CMD, we need to type on the searching bar CMD to run a Command Prompt.

Opening a Command Prompt

Once CMD is open, we need to input the next commands:

dispart
List Volume

Now all currently active drives to be deployed in Windows 10. See image below:

Diskpart showing all disk drives available

This information can check it, into File Explorer:

File Explorer showing all of the Hard Drives

Now, we need to select which unit we want to hide. In my case is Unit E. With this in mind, we can select it by choosing the number (select volume 3) or letter assigned (select volume E). Any of these commands have to be typed on Command Prompt. In this case, I selected volume 3.

CMD running diskpart. Selecting volume 3

Once the unit had been selected, we have to delete the letter assigned to the disk in order to hide it. To the end that, just type in CMD the nex command:

remove letter E

CMD running diskpart command. Removing unit´s letter to hide hard disk drive

This is it, we can open File Explorer and check that the unit is not there anymore.

Unit “E” is hidden.

At the same time, if we want to restore visibility the unit again, just repeat same proceed through diskpart to select unit desired (3 or E), but we need to execute the next command:

assign letter E

CMD running diskpart command to assign unit´s letter.

Once again, we can open File Explorer to see how the unit has been restored to visibility.

File Explorer showing Unit E once again

Using Disk Management

Previously, we see how to hide a Hard Disk Unit using CMD, but Windows provide us a graphical tool too, called Disk Management. Let´s do it! In the first place open File Explorer, and do right-click on This PC, a menu will show up, and we have select manage.

Manage This PC to open Computer Management

A new window with the Computer Management will appear with several options inside. On the left side under Storage, select Disk Management. Them, please do right-click on the desired unit, and click Change Drive Letters and Path

On the next window, we have to select Remove

Removing drive letter to hide hard disk drive

Now, we select the Remove option to remove the drive and hide it from the system. We will see the following message that we will accept to complete the process:

A warning sign

We open File Explorer and see that the unit is not visible anymore.

File explorer with Hard Disk Drive hidden.

Once again, if we want to restore visibility to the unit, just repeat the same process to select it, dor right-click on it and select Change Drive Letters and Path, and select Add

Add a letter to the drive

On the next window, we must Assign the following drive letter, and can select the same (E) in order to restore visibility.

The file explores showing unit previously hidden
