<p>Hello! It is very important to ensure the integrity of the hard disk in the computer. Since it is an essential element for the system. Indeed, the failure of this element will cause instability, expenses and loss of information. Consequently, it is important to watch over the integrity and performance of this hardware. Certainly there are third party apps that do this function. However, Microsoft included its own tool to detect and correct errors in the hard disk. This is the CHKDSK command. This is a very useful Windows command for the health of the system in general. Well, today we will see how to use the CHKDSK command in <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Windows</a> 10.</p>

<h2>What is CHKDSK?</h2>

<p>It is a command that analyzes, repairs and checks the state of the hard disk. It also aims to improve the performance, use and speed of the disk. In addrion, it provides the following options:</p>

<ul><li>Scanning, repairing and solving the physical problems presented by the hard disks in the system.</li><li>Real-time hard drive integrity check</li><li>Repair of logic errors.</li></ul>

<h2>Using the CHKDSK command to repair the hard disk.</h2>

<p>The user can invoke this command in different ways. First type CHKDSK from the search box.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="788" height="676" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch.png" alt="Launch CHKDSK from the search bar." class="wp-image-25804" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch.png 788w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch-300x257.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch-768x659.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch-696x597.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 788px) 100vw, 788px" /><figcaption>Launch CHKDSK from the search bar.</figcaption></figure>

<p>You can also run it through a CMD with administrative privileges, by running the <em>chkdsk </em>command.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="790" height="680" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch2.png" alt="Launching a CMD as an administrator. " class="wp-image-25806" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch2.png 790w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch2-300x258.png 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch2-768x661.png 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch2-696x599.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 790px) 100vw, 790px" /><figcaption>Launching a CMD as an administrator.</figcaption></figure>

<p>You can also run the chkdsk command directly. With this in mind, press the Win+R combination:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="399" height="206" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch3.png" alt="Running the chkdsk command" class="wp-image-25807" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch3.png 399w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch3-300x155.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px" /><figcaption>Running the chkdsk command</figcaption></figure>

<p>Once in the CMD, you can execute the chkdsk command to see the disk information and system integrity. However, this only shows a descriptive report without making any repairs.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="741" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch4-1024x741.jpg" alt="Running the chkdsk command" class="wp-image-25809" srcset="https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch4-1024x741.jpg 1024w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch4-300x217.jpg 300w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch4-768x556.jpg 768w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch4-696x503.jpg 696w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch4-1068x773.jpg 1068w, https://www.osradar.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/ch4.jpg 1229w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Running the chkdsk command</figcaption></figure>

<h2>How to check the hard disk with the CHKDSK command</h2>

<p>As mentioned, when we use the command alone, a report is displayed. Now, to execute actions, you have to use this syntax:</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">chkdsk (Unit): (parameters)</pre>

<p>Below I show you some commands and their usefulness:</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">chkdsk /scan</pre>

<p>Scans and searches for errors on an NTFS disk</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">chkdsk /spotfix</pre>

<p>This command will instantly unmount the volume to fix problems that were sent to the registry in previous analyses:</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">chkdsk sdccleanup</pre>

<p>This command can only be used on NTFS systems. In effect, it will collect and then delete data that the analyzer does not use. Additionally, it includes the use of the /F parameter.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">chkdsk offlinescanandfix</pre>

<p>It can only be used with NTFS disks and must be used in conjunction with the /scan command. This command performs an online scan and sends errors to a queue for offline repair.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">chkdsk /scan /perf</pre>

<p>It is only for use on NTFS disks and must be used with the /scan command. Additionally, It allows you to use more system resources to perform a scan as soon as possible. However, it may produce a slower system state.</p>

<h2>CHKDSK command options.</h2>

<p>This command can be supplemented by using some parameters.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">/f</pre>

<p>This parameter allows to fix errors on the disk.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">/l</pre>

<p>Using this parameter a light check of the index entries will be executed. Note that it only applies to NTFS drives</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">/r</pre>

<p>With this parameter it is possible to correct errors in the disk sectors. Also, the wizard can recover readable information from the disk.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">/x</pre>

<p>Through this parameter the volume is forced to its dismounting</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">/b</pre>

<p>This command validates incorrect clusters on the selected disk. On the other hand, if the disk is NTFS then add /r</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">/c</pre>

<p>Using this parameter, the cycle check in the folder structure is skipped. Similarly, it is only available for NTFS disks.</p>

<pre class="wp-block-preformatted">/?</pre>

<p>Deploy chkdsk support.</p>

<h2>Conclusion</h2>

<p>Ultimately we have seen how to use the CHKDSK command in Windows 10. Indeed, this tool is very powerful in detecting errors on hard disks. However, it goes further because it allows you to correct numerous types of failures. Even physical and logical ones. All right, that&#8217;s it for now.
