Hello! If you use your computer for work, you may need an item whose use has been growing exponentially recently. Especially in various fields related to technology. In effect, we are referring to typography or text fonts. This is something that we will need to use in sectors such as marketing, advertising, graphic design, blogging, among others. That is why it can be essential to be able to create and use fonts on Windows. Therefore, we will be able to write with our font. Arial, Time New Roman, Helvetica… are some of the most known and used typefaces and typefaces worldwide. In fact, typography is an art that requires many hours of work to master. This prompted us to show you how to create custom fonts on Windows.

How to get custom fonts on Windows.

To create our own custom font, we can make use of these free programs available for Windows.

Microsoft Font Maker

We are talking about an application developed by Microsoft. Its main function is to help us create our own typefaces in a simple way. In this way we can give a personal touch to all our creations. You can download it for free from the Microsoft Store. In theory, it is possible to create fonts with a mouse click. However, the experience is not very user-friendly. Therefore, it is recommended to have a PC with a touch screen or a tablet and a stylus to use it.

Once we run it, the main menu appears with different squares showing the alphabet. From there we must write the letters and symbols to create our own font. Another feature is that we will not be able to delete those characters in which we have made a mistake. We will also not be able to add special characters or add more options for the text.

In the next screen, you will see three sentences to write. In addition, it is necessary to write them in the corresponding box. This fact will be a little nostalgic for some people. In effect, you will feel like you have to learn calligraphy as in the olden days. It is a similar situation. It is also important that we do it correctly so that the program can detect the typeface we are going to create.

Adjusting the appearance

The last page allows us to adjust the size and create the font. At the bottom, we find three sliders to set the space between characters. In addition to the space between words and the size. Later, in case any letter appears to be improper, we can go back to the previous screens through a small arrow icon located at the top left. If the font size is not too tight, there is no need to worry. In fact, we can adjust it in applications such as Word.

Once finished, click on the Create button. This will open a File Explorer window so that we can save our font. Remember that we must give it a name, and it will be accompanied by a TTF extension.

FontForge

It is a powerful open-source application for creating and editing digital fonts. In addition, it is characterized by incorporating a good number of functions that will help us to customize each letter as much as possible. It also includes several metric and transformation functions. FontForge is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux. Additionally, it can be used completely free of charge. To do so, just download it from the developer’s website. Once opened, a window appears from where we can load a font already created. We can also create a new one by clicking on New.

Some special symbols are also available. By double-clicking on any box, an editing screen appears. From there you can create the font corresponding to the chosen number, letter, or character. This is something we must do individually with each square. Each time we add the font, the square will become blank, while the rest show an X.

Once finished, we only have to save our font by clicking on File and Generate font. Now we only have to give it a name and a location where it will be saved.

Web applications to create a typographic font

If we would rather not download any software to our computer, we can also create our own typefaces with these web applications.

Calligraphr

This is a web application that allows us to scan our handwriting to create a custom font. It is easy to use and offers several features that will help us to get your perfect font. The results can be exported as TTF or OTF formats for use on both Windows and macOS computers. Additionally, we can use Calligraphr to create and export a custom handwriting font for free. Likewise, a Pro subscription unlocks additional features to help us turn our handwriting into the best possible font.

The main disadvantage of using Calligraphr for free is that its font is limited to 75 characters. That may be enough for uppercase and lowercase letters, every number and common punctuation marks. However, it doesn’t give for much more. To get started, we must access its official website and create a free account.

How does it work?

The first thing to do is to create a template of the source. This is based on a grid of squares, with one square for each character we want to include in the font. After creating the template and printing it, we must handwrite each letter in the squares. Then, we must scan it again in our PC to be able to create the font. To accomplish this, we must click on Download Template and the file format and the size of the cells.

Once downloaded, we will obtain the necessary template that we must print. Then we use a black pen or marker to complete the template by drawing a single character per box. Please verify that each line is clearly drawn.

Now we just need to click on the My fonts section and then click on Upload template to add the template with our font.

It will show us the written characters that we can edit or delete if we like a particular one. We can also adjust their size to make sure that each character has the same height. Once finished, we click on Add characters to the font. Finally, we just need to click on the Generate Font button so that Calligraphr finishes converting our handwriting into a font. Once finished, we make sure it looks good in the preview, then we download the file in TTF or OTF format.

Very well, in this way we have seen how to create custom fonts on Windows. Bye!

Hi, how are you? The font is a distinctive aspect of any make or model. In fact, many people are able to recognize a product just by looking at its typeface. Windows 10 is no exception, and for that reason it comes with a characteristic font by default. This font is Segoe UI. However, each person has their own particular preferences. This includes colors, sizes, and also the system font. Personally, I like to give my personal touch to the operating system. And this implies modifying the type of font that the system brings. On the other hand, this is not something that can be modified with any command or system configuration. For that reason, let’s see how to change the default font in Windows 10.

How to change the font in Windows 10

As mentioned above, this procedure cannot be done from the Windows 10 configuration. In fact, the system displays the amount of fonts available, but does not show the option to change it. In this case, it is advisable to make a backup of the registry before modifying it. This way, if there is any problem, you can always recover the original state of the registry keys. To know how to backup and restore them, I invite you to see our post. Next we will see which are the sources available in the system. With this intention please enter the Windows configuration by pressing the Win+I combination. Once there, select Personalization.

Select System Personalization.

Then select the Font menu in the left column. The available fonts will then be displayed. Please select the font you wish to apply and copy its name verbatim.

List of fonts available in Windows 10.

Then open your favorite text editor and paste the following text:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts]
"Segoe UI (TrueType)"=""
"Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)"=""
"Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)"=""
"Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)"=""
"Segoe UI Light (TrueType)"=""
"Segoe UI Semibold (TrueType)"=""
"Segoe UI Symbol (TrueType)"=""
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes]

"Segoe UI"="New Font"

Please remember to replace New Font with the font you previously selected. In this specific case, I chose the Segoe Print font, so the text editor should look like this.

Text file to modify the font in Windows 10.

Next, save the file in any location but verify that its extension is a registry file (.reg).

Text file with new font settings.

Then, you must double-click on the log file. A warning message will be displayed immediately and you must accept it.

Update the registry file

You can see that the registration information was updated. Now you only have to reboot the computer to see the changes.

Registration information, correctly updated.

Finally, you can see the result of the font change.

Changed fonts in the file browser

How to restore Windows 10 fonts to their original state

If after a while, you want to return to the original source, just repeat the previous procedure, but using the following text.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts]
"Segoe UI (TrueType)"="segoeui.ttf"
"Segoe UI Black (TrueType)"="seguibl.ttf"

Hello, I hope you are fine. It is a real pleasure to be with you again! The variety of Windows 10`s users is unlimited, for example, some users just want to utilize it for day full works without intentions to change anything about how look his system. At the same time, another likes to change themes, colors and different personalization options. On Windows 7, we are able to open the personalization preferences and change the system font for various elements in the operating system, including the font for icons, title bars, menus, message box, and more. Unfortunately, this is not the case with Windows 10. Ironically, the menu shows fonts available, but it does not allow to change or modify fonts. With this intention, I will talk to you about Windows 10 and his possibilities for modifying the default system font.

Changing windows font.

The default font in Windows 10 is Segoe UI and it is the one that we are going to change. It is important to realize that this method implies to modify the windows registry and always, I repeat, we always must to make a backup of it. If you do not how to do that, please check our tutorial. So, let is do it. In the first place, we need to write in search bar themes in order to select themes and related settings

Select Themes and related settings

In the windows are the variety of fonts installed in the system. We can choose any font we like by noting the exact name of the font. In this particular case, we select Candara font.

List of fonts

Then, open Notepad and copy and paste the following registry code into the text file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts]
"Segoe UI (TrueType)"=""
"Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)"=""
"Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)"=""
"Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)"=""
"Segoe UI Light (TrueType)"=""
"Segoe UI Semibold (TrueType)"=""
"Segoe UI Symbol (TrueType)"=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes]

"Segoe UI"="Candara"

Please remember, I select Candara font, for that reason, it was written on the notepad, but if you need another font, just replace it in the last name for your font of choice.

Next, proceed to go to File / Save as and there, we select the option “All files”, assign any name to the file with the .reg extension, an click save. Now, we need to double-click in new .reg file to merge into the registry. A warning window will appear, click yes

Yes to confirm registry modification

A confirmation message will appear.

Change of font was made

Restart the system to apply the changes made.

How to restore Windows 10 fonts to their original state

If we want Windows to have the original appearance we should do the following. Open Notepad, and write this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts]
"Segoe UI (TrueType)"="segoeui.ttf"
"Segoe UI Black (TrueType)"="seguibl.ttf"
"Segoe UI Black Italic (TrueType)"="seguibli.ttf"
"Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)"="segoeuib.ttf"
"Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)"="segoeuiz.ttf"
"Segoe UI Emoji (TrueType)"="seguiemj.ttf"
"Segoe UI Historic (TrueType)"="seguihis.ttf"
"Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)"="segoeuii.ttf"
"Segoe UI Light (TrueType)"="segoeuil.ttf"
"Segoe UI Light Italic (TrueType)"="seguili.ttf"
"Segoe UI Semibold (TrueType)"="seguisb.ttf"
"Segoe UI Semibold Italic (TrueType)"="seguisbi.ttf"
"Segoe UI Semilight (TrueType)"="segoeuisl.ttf"
"Segoe UI Semilight Italic (TrueType)"="seguisli.ttf"
"Segoe UI Symbol (TrueType)"="seguisym.ttf"
"Segoe MDL2 Assets (TrueType)"="segmdl2.ttf"
"Segoe Print (TrueType)"="segoepr.ttf"
"Segoe Print Bold (TrueType)"="segoeprb.ttf"
"Segoe Script (TrueType)"="segoesc.ttf"
"Segoe Script Bold (TrueType)"="segoescb.ttf"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes]

"Segoe UI"=-

We save this file with the extension .reg. After this, we will double click on it, accept the warning messages and restart the system so that the changes are effective.

As has been noted, the way of change windows font is a little complicated, but it worth it in order to have a different Windows.

If fonts present in Windows 10 are not enough, you can download more variety from here.
