Hello! Privacy is a fundamental aspect in any area of life. This fact becomes more relevant at the computer level. Since more and more time is spent using it. For this reason, it is very likely that you keep personal and work items on your hard drive. In any case, it is always advisable to keep this data out of the reach of curious people. Now, Windows offers methods to limit the access to folders of certain users. However, these are steps that require some knowledge on the part of the users. Consequently, today we will see a visual procedure that allows almost completely hiding a folder. And by moving it to a hidden location, it makes access as difficult as possible. Today we will see how to create invisible folders in Windows 10.

Learn how to hide the folder easily

As mentioned, the change concerns the appearance of the folder. This will make it practically invisible. In fact, all you have to do is modify the main icon. Then replace it with one of the icons provided by the system. With this in mind, right-click on the folder to enter Properties.

Go to folder properties

The properties window will be displayed immediately. If you have used Windows since previous versions, then you will be familiar with this environment. The first thing you have to do is click on the Customization tab. And then click on Change Icon.

Proceed to change the folder icon

We have reached the central point of the tutorial. Since the wizard shows a list of available icons. Well, just select a blank icon. That is, transparent looking. To do this, just select the blank space between the icons. As shown in the image below.

Selecting the transparent icon to make the folder invisible.

Please note that when you click on the white space, it will turn blue. So press OK to return to the properties window. Finally, press OK to set the changes.

Back to the folder location, you can see the established change.

Folder looking invisible on the Windows 10 desktop

Ultimately we have seen how to create invisible folders in Windows 10. Or move it to a location that is difficult to access. Then you can increase the privacy control of your content. All right, that’s it for now. Before I say goodbye I invite you to see our post about how to add a Gmail account to Windows 10.
Hello, in this opportunity, we are going to talk a little about Windows Server 2019. Specifically about the file server and how to enable it. This is a server that is configured to provide a central location in the local network. The goal is to store files and share them with domain users. In this way, users can have access to files and applications. In other words, the file server is a simple and effective solution for sharing data. For that reason, let’s see how to enable the file server in Windows Server 2019

How to create a shared folder in Windows Server 2019

The first thing we have to do is create a new folder inside the server. This folder will function as a file server. Once created, you need to enter its properties. Next, go to the Sharing tab. Additionally, click on Advanced Sharing

Create the folder and enter the Sharing tab

In the next window, check the box corresponding to Share this folder. It is also possible to limit the number of simultaneous users in the folder. Press accept to continue.

Share the folder

From the same window, click on the Permissions menu. In this way, we will modify the access permissions of the folder. In the first place, remove the Everyone user group. This is done for security. In addition, click on the Add menu.

Add a user group

Then choose the group of users you want to have access to the folder:

Adding domain users

For the purposes of this example, we have selected the Domain Users. Then give it read and write permission in the folder. This guarantees full access to the files by the selected users.

Guaranteeing access to the users of the domain.

After applying the changes, press OK to set them. In the same way, the access path for the client machines is shown. With these steps, the folder for the file server has already been correctly configured. To check its functionality, simply log in from any client computer. Then access the newly created folder.

Accessing the shared folder from a client machine.

Configuring the file server in Windows Server 2019.

Next, we will manage the file server in Windows Server 2019. With this in mind, please enter the Server Dashboard and from the left menu select File and Storage Services.

Select Files and Storage Services

In the next window click on Shares. Immediately view the shared folder:

From the Shares section, select the shared folder.

Then double click on the folder to enter the properties of the folder. In this menu go to the Settings section. Additionally, click on the first option corresponding to Enable acces-based enumeration. This option allows users to only see the folders that have permission to be edited, the ones that are read-only will be hidden. This configuration is very useful to protect the privacy of the folders.

Enabling Enable acces-based enumeration

File Server Resource Manager options

Some options shown in the window are as follows:

Quota manager: this option allows you to define a space limit for users to add files to the shared folder. Consequently, the capacity of the disk on the server is not affected.

File Screening Manager: This option allows access to a series of templates where elements such as executable files, video, audio, etc. are blocked.

Conclusion

Ultimately we have seen how to enable the file server in Windows Server 2019. With this option we give the ability to the clients of the server, to enter the desired data. In addition, it is possible to control the quota, size and amount of information available. All right, that’s it for the moment. See you later.

When you’re working on Linux, there’s obviously tons of directories (folders) you have to work with, right? Even for the most basic users, a good number of folders must be ready to work with. For example, I have to constantly visit the “Movies” folder for watching my movie collection, “Images” for my photos etc.

In most cases, all the folders have the same icon. That’s so BORING!!!! Of course, you’re free to customize your folder icon with different themes like Oranchelo, Papirus, and Uniform etc. However, you’re not able to individually customize the icon of each of the folders.

Want to give your folders some spice? Let’s change the folder icon for an awesome view with Folder Color!

Installing Folder Color

Folder Color is a nice tool for the purpose. It offers tons of available icons for each of your folders!

Installing Folder Color is very simple. Run the following commands according to your own Linux distro –

Ubuntu

sudo apt install folder-color folder-color-caja folder-color-common -y

Debian

# 32-bit package
wget http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tangerine:/deb9-xfce-4.12/Debian_9.0/i386/folder-color_0.0.86-7_i386.deb

# 64-bit package
wget http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tangerine:/deb9-xfce-4.12/Debian_9.0/amd64/folder-color_0.0.86-7_amd64.deb

# Install the DEB packages
sudo apt-get install folder-color_0.0.86-7_*.deb
sudo apt-get install -f

Fedora

sudo dnf copr enable sogal/folder-color
sudo dnf install folder-color-common folder-color-common-lang nautilus-extension-folder-color

OpenSUSE

sudo zypper install folder-color folder-color-common caja-extension-folder-color nautilus-extension-folder-color

Arch Linux

# Install Git
sudo pacman -S git base-devel

# Get Folder Color
git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/folder-color-bzr.git

# Install Folder Color
cd folder-color-bzr
makepkg -si

Generic Linux instruction

Folder Color doesn’t offer much compatibility. If your Linux distro isn’t on above, you have to install the tool from source. Get the latest version of source code on Launchpad.

After the extraction is complete, run the following command –

sudo python3 setup.py install

Depending on your system, you may need to install the following packages –

python3-distutils-extra

python3-dbus

python3-apt

Using Folder Color

Folder Color officially supports two of the most popular file managers – Nautilus and Caja. However, the tool should also work with other file managers. For the best result, Nautilus or Caja is recommended.

Let’s change the icon of “demo1”. Right-click on the folder >> Folder’s Color.

Select whatever your mind wishes! Here’s a demonstration of my test directories.

Enjoy!
