Transfer files between PCs is a task that can arise in several situations. For example, when we buy a new computer, and we want to use the data from the previous one. No matter if they are documents, photos, videos, music or any type of file. Depending on what we need to do and the means we have, there are various methods to perform this type of transfer. There are direct transfers between PCs, or through an intermediate medium and external devices. It is also possible to use cloud storage services. We review them.

How to transfer files between PCs

Direct cable

It is the simplest, most convenient and fastest way to transfer files from one PC to another PC. There are two basic ways to do it:

A USB jumper cable. The industry offers cabling to connect Windows computers via USB. Mac to Mac using USB/Thunderbolt ports, or even between them. Windows computers will recognize the connection. In addition, it will only be a matter of installing a small included program to be able to synchronize them and transfer the files as if it were a typical explorer. On Mac, using Thunderbolt ports, you can connect two computers and transfer files easily by dragging them between them.

A crossover network cable. A lesser known alternative among the public is to use a crossover Ethernet cable. By means of them, we can create a local area network without the need for a router or modem. In addition to sharing files between computers regardless of their operating system. It is an ideal method when we mix platforms. In fact, we can connect personal computers running Windows, macOS, or Linux indistinctly.

External storage

Using an external storage medium is surely the most used way to copy files from one PC to another. Especially when handling large files. The disadvantage compared to the above is that you cannot copy files between two PCs directly. In addition, we have to use an added and intermediate device to do it in two steps.

The advantage is that they are widespread and inexpensive. Similarly, they are not only used to transfer data between PCs, but also for data backup and backups. They are also used to install operating systems or other applications once they have been made bootable.

Optical media are less and less used because of their failures and limited capacity. However, from the rest, there is everything you want. You can use an external disk (hard disk or SSD) of large capacity and connected to a port as compatible as USB. You also have the option of a microSD (or SD) card, through a USB drive, that you can carry in a pocket. In any of these cases, the task is simple. You simply connect the external media to the first PC, copy the data to be transferred to it. Finally, you remove the drive and place it in the second PC to copy the data.

In addition to the above means, you can also use wireless storage units to transfer files without the need for cabling. Another great possibility are NAS. These are devices that add storage and connectivity and can also be used to transfer files of any size between PCs. Moreover, from anywhere in the world and regardless of the operating system you use.

Local network

This method takes advantage of the fact that all computers included in a local network can see each other once configured. Operating systems have built-in options for setting up home networks between devices. In this way, folders and files can be transferred very easily from the same file explorer. It works over wired LANs as well as wireless networks connected via Wi-Fi.

In addition to the operating systems’ own tools that can be used, there are applications such as those specialized in file transfers (FTP). These are ideal for moving data across networks, both Internet and local.

If you do not control this type of network management, there is third-party software to copy files of any size between two PCs. In this group, we have to highlight Send Anywhere. A fantastic and free application that only requires the two computers to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. It has versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux and even has an extension for Chrome OS. It also has versions for mobiles, iOS or Android.

HDD or SSD

This method is recommended, especially when we are looking to replace the storage unit. However, we can also use it to move data from one PC to another PC. Here we have several possibilities. One possibility is to dismount the storage solution (hard disk or SSD) from the old computer and mount it on the new one. Something that is not always possible because of its format or because of an installation that is more complicated.

That is why in these cases we recommend connecting the drives externally. In fact, it is a natural method to—by the way – take advantage of the old hard disks that we are replacing with the solid state drives that today completely occupy the consumer storage market. We can do this using three effective methods:

Cable. A simple eSATA (external SATA) cable or a SATA to USB interface adapter. They are very cheap and effective and are suitable for hard disks or SSDs.

Enclosures. Another possibility, perhaps the most aesthetic, is to use a case-chassis where we will place the hard disk or SSD. It is simply a matter of removing a few screws because the circuitry is already included inside. We would use it to copy files between two PCs. In addition, it would serve us later to save data and backups or to install software from it.

Dock. Something more expensive than a simple cable, but more versatile and aesthetic to place on a desktop, is a docking station. Its use is as simple as putting hard drives in their housings and connecting the dock to a PC, desktop or laptop. They offer multiple bays, support different interfaces and work on different platforms.

Cloud

The cloud is here to stay. This includes servers installed in large data centers that provide computing, video, music, software, or games on demand. They also provide data storage. In addition, it is another very convenient solution to use it as a medium that can be accessed by any type of PC.

It is as simple as uploading files to the cloud from your old computer and downloading them to the new one. If you have a good Internet connection and both computers have synchronized folders locally, the upload/download will be done simultaneously gaining in speed.

The problem with this method is when the amount of data to move is massive, tens/hundreds of gigabytes, we must be subscribed to a paid service that offers sufficient capacity. In fact, the free ones are usually not very generous in the handling of large files.

File extensions on Windows are suffixes placed at the end of a file name. They are usually preceded by a period as a name separator. In addition, they typically have a length of two to four characters. It is a basic section for file management. However, it is perhaps not too well known to the average user. We will try to bring you up to date in this post. File extensions, as characters appended to the name, allow identifying their type or format. They also allow you to define the applications associated with each of them. That is, the type of software that a computer will use when executing a file. There are a huge number of them to cover the wide range of formats that a personal computer can handle.

A simple example to understand its function would be the handling of a hypothetical file named Tutorial file extensions.jpg. When we try to open that file to view or edit it, the operating system will look for any associated application. In this case, the .jpg extension tells us that it is an image. Consequently, it will use an application that we have installed. This app can be Windows’ own Paint or others from third parties such as Gimp or Photoshop.

As we will see later, the user can select the use of a specific application for each type of file. In the same way, you can have information about it without opening it, just by looking at its extension.

How many file extensions are there on Windows?

On Windows there are countless of them, and they are distributed according to their type. A group of them are internal to the operating system, necessary for its operation. Others correspond to the wide variety of formats that a computer can handle, such as image, video, document, music, web and other files. To name a few of the most important and most familiar to you:

EXE: one of the executable file formats used for Windows programs to run.

PNG: lossless image file format.

DOC / DOCX: Microsoft Word processor document file.

HTM / HTML: HyperText Markup Language format for creating online web pages.

ISO: disk images for various formats

PDF: storage format for digital documents, initially developed by Adobe.

MP3: compressed digital audio format.

ZIP: compressed archive format

TXT: plain text ASCII text file.

MPEG: compressed video file

COM: MS-DOS application

These are just a few examples of the best known ones because there are many, many more. Some are industry standard and others have been created by the developers themselves to run particular applications.

How to view file extensions on Windows?

Microsoft does not make it easy because the latest versions of Windows do not show the extensions by default. Besides, if you do not change it, you will only see its name. The best thing is that they should be visible to the user. It is not only more useful, but also safer. If file extensions are not displayed, it can be difficult to know if a given file (following the example of a .jpg) really corresponds to an image and not to a malicious executable file.

Its activation is simple. For example, in Windows 11, go to any Windows File Explorer window and pull down the View menu. Next, select the Show submenu, you will see a checkbox to enable extensions.

There is also another way to display them. From the file explorer itself, please enter the options. With this in mind, click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner. Then scroll down to the bottom and click on Options.

In the floating window, please select the View tab. Now scroll down to the bottom and uncheck the option: Hide extensions for known files.

How to select the application for each file?

Whenever you install an application on Windows that can open a particular file type, both the file extension and the software will be included in the Windows registry. It is perfectly possible to have multiple applications that can open the same file type. You can start an application and then load a compatible file into it. Or, you can right-click on a file to open its context menu and choose one of the applications that can run it. In the example, an image file in JPG format:

However, there is also a default application associated with each extension. It is the application that opens when you double left-click on a file. On Windows, it is also the application that appears at the top of the list shown in the example above.

If you always use the same one, it is useful to associate an application that is always used by default with a certain file extension. To do this, right-click on a file to open its context menu and click on Choose another app. There you will see the list of applications installed on your PC. Select the one you prefer and check Always. Thus, this will be the default app to open this type of files.

In Windows 11, you can access the same option in the System Settings>Apps> Default Apps tool and manage between the main types of image, music, video, or web files there.

Errors when changing file extensions

Windows is totally dependent on these characters to handle file execution, and if you remove them or change the extension, the operating system can go crazy and the file becomes temporarily unusable. As an illustration, we rename an image file .jpg to a text file .txt and try to run it. The system tries to open it in Notepad and returns something like the following:

To resolve it is just a matter of rewriting the original extension. Generally, Windows will warn about the issue with an error message before any changes are made. At this point, an important security recommendation is to be extremely careful when opening files from untrusted sources. Especially potentially dangerous ones in executable formats or those that execute code such as EXE, BAT, MSI or REG. You really have to be careful with all of them because malware can be included in any type of file.

GNU/Linux and macOS: How extensions are handled.

Linux and macOS also use file extensions, but do not rely on them as Windows does. Instead, they use the MIME protocol, where the creators determine the file type. This information is stored within the file header, and both macOS and Linux use that information to determine what type of file they are dealing with.

Since file extensions are not really necessary on macOS or Linux, it is quite possible that you have a valid file without an extension. However, the operating system can still open the file with the correct program because of the file information contained in its header.

Hello! On our Windows computer, we usually work with all kinds of file formats. Indeed, some of them will be more familiar to us, while others will be quite the opposite. This can happen when we have a file with the KEY file extension. Especially because it is a format especially used on macOS, being theoretically only compatible with Apple computers. In case we have received such a file, we will tell you everything you need to know about them. Next, let’s see what a KEY file is and what it is used for. As mentioned above, it is a file type only supported by macOS. However, there are also ways to open and edit them on Windows. We will also see different options available to convert them to other file formats.

What is the KEY file used for?

A KEY file is a format for creating multimedia presentation on Apple devices. Specifically for use from the Keynote application on both macOS and iOS. This file type contains different slides in which you can include text, images, shapes, graphics, transitions, audio, video, and notes. Thus, a KEY file is the main file type associated with Keynote. In this sense it behaves similarly to how PPTX files behave with Microsoft PowerPoint.

Keynote is one of the three Apple productivity applications that can be found in iWork, along with Pages and Numbers. These are Apple versions of the most popular programs developed by Microsoft, such as PowerPoint, Word and Excel, belonging to the Office suite.

This may lead us to believe that a KEY file can only be compatible with Apple devices. However, the truth is that it can also be accessed and used from a Windows 10 and Windows 11 device.

Programs to open and view in Windows

Let’s suppose that you have created a presentation using the Keynote application, creating a KEY file. Well, you may need to be able to open the file. If you don’t have your MacBook, iPhone, or iPad handy, you may be in trouble. But don’t worry, if you have your Windows PC you can also manage it correctly. In this case, we tell you how to open and view them.

However, we must keep in mind that the display will never be the same, nor will we be able to obtain the same attributes and functions of Keynote when opening the KEY file in Windows. Despite the compatibility of some programs, there will always be a loss or change in the format and layout.

Microsoft PowerPoint

This is possibly the most popular and widely used tool for opening slide presentation files. In fact, it is a Windows reference, and it will also allow us to open any KEY file. To use it, you will need to purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription or buy the Office package. Once opened, you just need to open the program and click on the File tab, select Open and navigate to the desired file and select it.

In PowerPoint, the KEY file will open in the native Windows PPT/PPTX format, and the same goes for saving the file. This is important to note. In fact, if we modify it and then save it, it will be done as a PPT or PPTX file name extension.

LibreOffice Impress

If you do not have PowerPoint, you can also use a free alternative such as LibreOffice Impress. Unfortunately, as with PowerPoint, we will not be able to use all the functions of the original KEY presentation. In fact, we may lose the formatting, as well as the transition effects included. We can download it for free from the official LibreOffice website.

To view the presentation, it will only be necessary to click on the File tab, click on Open and select the KEY file. We will be able to edit the presentation from this software. However, when we are going to save the changes, it will not be as KEY format, but we will have to choose another one like ODT, PPT, XML, etc.

Viewer Lite

We are talking about a universal file opening program. In fact, it can open more than 150 different types of formats, including Keynote KEY files. We can open with this software any presentation created with Apple Keynote on Windows. However, here we get a limitation. And that is that we will not be able to edit them. We will only be able to see them, and it will not be possible to modify them.

File Viewer is a free program compatible with all Microsoft operating system platforms, from Windows XP to Windows 11. Simply download it for free from the developer’s website.

iCloud

We are talking about Apple’s cloud storage service, which allows us to open and edit any Keynote KEY file. To accomplish this, we just need to access their website and log in with our Apple ID and password. Then select the Keynote application and click on the load icon. We select the file we want to open and load the file. Click on the wrench icon and select Download copy. Then choose the desired format and the format in which you would like to save the file. Once we have loaded the KEY file, we can play and edit it.

Convert to other formats

There may be times when we may be interested in converting our KEY file to PowerPoint PPT format, or other formats such as PDF or ZIP. If this is our case, we can perform the conversion by using these software programs developed for this purpose.

ZAMZAR

This is a web page specially designed for file conversion. It really stands out for the wide variety of formats it works with, as well as for being extremely efficient. We can use it to convert our KEY file to PPT file. To get started, just click on this link on its official website. Then you just need to load the KEY file and click on Convert Now. The process will take just a few seconds and once finished it allows us to save the final result on our hard drive.

So, this way we have seen what is KEY file and how to open it in Windows. See you soon!

Today we will show you what is the file explorer of Windows 11. The new Microsoft operating system brings an innovative file explorer. Indeed, in several respects it differs from its predecessor in Windows 10. It certainly does not convince many users. Indeed, we miss some aspects. For example, the use of tabs to open multiple folders, as well as the inclusion of add-ons. This is the reason developers are encouraged to offer alternatives.

Main innovations of Windows 11 file explorer

The most noticeable changes can be seen in the graphical interface. Indeed, it lacks tabs. In addition, we have a new modern interface, icons, redesigned context menu and many other settings. In accordance with the new look of Windows 11, it incorporates rounded corners. Additionally, the menu and title bar have been combined into a header interface. It also incorporates a New icon in the toolbar. This speeds up the creation of a new folder.

New icons in Windows 11 Explorer

Another important change is the incorporation of new icons. These elements are modern, with new styles, colors, and orientations to align with the latest design changes incorporated into the system. On the other hand, the New Folder icon has changed. Consequently, there are two versions of the icon. One is to indicate that the folder is empty, and another icon to indicate that the folder has contents inside. Actually, a simple but very practical change. In addition, the icon for the compressed folder has also been modified.

Example of the new icons in the Windows 11 file explorer.

New redesigned tools menu in Windows 11 file explorer

The new file explorer also incorporates a new tool menu design. In this menu there is a top row with different commands for quick actions. These are: Cut, Copy, Rename, Share and Delete. Additionally, a list of options depending on the item we are currently selecting. By default, the menu only shows the most common commands that we usually use. However, we can always see more options by clicking on the corresponding menu.

View of the tools’ menu in Windows 11 file explorer

Using the file explorer toolbar.

We have already mentioned that we have a new toolbar. We also mentioned that Microsoft has added a button for New. Using it we can create new folders, shortcuts, bitmap image, text document and compressed folder. We can also find the tools for cutting, copying, pasting, sharing and deleting files. There are also controls to customize the View and Sort files actions. In the first option, we can determine how we want to see the icons or files. We can also view the hidden elements.

There are also specific actions according to the type of files. For example, when selecting an image, we can choose different options such as: Set as background, rotate left or rotate right. Finally, there is a three-dot icon. From there, we can manage different options related to the files. For example, select all, do nothing or invert selection.

Tools menu

File explorer search engine features

Below the toolbar, there is an address bar. From there we can scroll to the different folders. Therefore, it has controls to go forward, backward, up and down. These controls are very useful to move comfortably through the folders. It also incorporates a new button to update the explorer window. Finally, there is the search bar to locate the files, programs, or applications that we have in our computer.

Windows 11 file explorer search and address bar

Managing quick access in the file explorer

Quick access is an old acquaintance of the file explorer. Its use is maintained in this version of Windows 11. When clicking on it, folders are displayed with a number. This number indicates how many main folders there are. Therefore, we will be able to see: desktop, downloads, documents and images. In each one of them, the files will go automatically according to what type of file or format they are. For example, in the downloads’ folder will go the files that we have downloaded recently in our computer. In the Images’ folder will be saved the screenshots we have recently downloaded to our computer.

Quick access

How Windows 11 Explorer recent files work.

Just below the quick access folders, there is the Recent Files section. In this section, we can see all the files we have opened and have been using. Very useful to quickly open all the usual documents. Just below the quick access folders, there is the Recent Files section. In this section, we can see all the files we have opened and have been using. Very useful to quickly open all the usual documents. A handy Preview tab is also available. Which is very useful to preview the files without having to open them.

Recent files with their respective preview

How Windows 11 Explorer views work

We are coming to the final part of the new features of Windows 11 file explorer. This time we will refer to the view menu. Actually, it is a set of controls located at the bottom of the explorer screen. Specifically, in the lower-left corner is a counter that indicates the number of items present in that explorer window. Now, in the lower-right corner, there are a few more icons. The first icon, is to put all our items in a vertical list. The second icon we find is to put all our larger files horizontally. Very well, in this way we have seen that it is the file explorer of Windows 11. As you can see, there are several innovations that will make your work easier. See you later!

Hello! One of the basic tools of Windows is the file explorer. Indeed, it is a daily use app. However, it also has third-party alternatives. This time, we will talk about Files. A free and open-source alternative. In addition, it was already available for Windows 10. However, it already has a date of arrival for Windows 11. And it offers all the basic functions of the file explorer. With the addition that supports tabs and adopts Fluent Desing. In addition, Files already has a release date for Windows 11.

Files will arrive on Windows 11 on October 04th

We have already told you about the performance of Files in Windows 10. Honestly, it has been a great experience. Well, for now, it is in the closed beta phase. However, this testing period is soon to end. Since the developer has posted on Twitter that the release date will be October 04, 2021.

#Files_v2 🚀 pic.twitter.com/633glUM6za
— Files (@FilesForWindows) August 25, 2021

As we have already mentioned, Files allows the use of tabs. Besides, its design is based on Fluent Design. On the other hand, it integrates almost all the functions of the classic Windows 10 explorer. In fact, it is enough to use the context menu to check it. It also supports functions such as FTP access.

But Files doesn’t just change things at the performance level. In fact, it supports the use of themes. So it’s a really attractive browser. Since it includes the option of side panels. That is, you can view folders or files in two different locations in the same window. It is even possible to preview the files inside it. On the other hand, there is still a little more than 1 month to go to know the complete news of Files. However, in the images, we can appreciate improvements typical of Windows 11. Such as the rounded corners and the redesigned icons. But if you want to see the evolution of Files, go to his page on GitHub. You already know, Files already has a release date for Windows 11. Bye!

Hi! You may not believe it, but at some point, you will need a file converter. Indeed, you will probably want to change the format of an image, an e-book, a song, a video, a document, a PDF, etc. In such a case, you will have spent time and energy looking for the right converter. Moreover, there are specific converters for each task. There are even programs that offer a universal conversion. On the other hand, there are also online converters. That is websites that offer conversion of various types of files. Well, today we will see such a solution. With a special addition. And this website offers the conversion for most types of files.

Online Convert offers the conversion for most file types. And it’s free.

Online Convert is the website we are talking about. In addition, its operation is similar to most other sites of its kind. However, it presents a feature that makes it special. It allows you to perform a lot of conversions of all kinds: audio, documents, web services, software, video, e-books, devices, images, files. As you can see, it is extremely versatile.

Online Convert allows you to convert most of the available file formats.

This kind of website is very useful. Therefore it is advisable to set it as a favorite in the web browser. Since it allows to make many conversions. For example: convert PDF to Word, PNG to JPG, MP4 to MP3, EPUB to MOBI, DOC to PDF, or MKV to MP4. In fact, most of the possible conversions are available. On the other hand, there are a couple of features that make this website even more interesting. First of all, it is completely free to use. In addition, conversions can be improved by configuring settings.

The file conversion process is very simple. All you have to do is access the website and choose from the available options. Let’s say you want to convert a PDF to DOCX. Consequently, you just need to click on the Document Converter. Then you select the target format.

Immediately a window will be displayed where you must upload the file to share. The website also allows you to upload web links and content from Dropbox and Google Drive. You can also set a number of parameters to improve conversion. For example, the source language, the color of the final result, or even set an OCR. When you are done, you can start the conversion.

Converting a file in Online Converter

This is just an example. In reality, there are many more options available. So you know that this website offers the conversion for most types of files. See you!

Hello! Windows 10 usually offers stability to its users. However, this stability is accompanied by a certain rigidity in its aspects. In fact, several aspects can only be modified with third-party apps. Unlike GNU/Linux for example. Previously we have talked about the file explorer. Which is one of the most used elements. Well, this design has not evolved much over time. However, it incorporates a side panel that allows you to preview images. But this function is only limited to this type of file. Read on to find out how to enable the preview of any file type in Windows 10.

Using QuickLook to preview any file in Windows 10.

As mentioned, Windows is very limited for previewing files. Indeed, it is not possible to preview documents, spreadsheets, or a PDF. Therefore, QuickLook offers this functionality. It is a free and open source tool that is in constant development. The project has a fairly simple intention. Since it seeks to incorporate this function present in macOS. It is a feature longed for by Windows users: the preview of files in the file explorer.

This tool has the project hosted in GitHub. Besides, it has improved a lot since its beginning. It allows 3 download tips. First, downloading the tool from Microsoft Store. But it’s also possible to download portable versions from GitHub. And finally there are available Nightly builds from AppVeyor

Whatever the type of download, all you have to do is to run it. To check that everything is in order, you should check the program icon on the taskbar.

QuickLook icon running correctly on the taskbar

From now on, just select the file in the file browser. Then press the space bar to preview the file or folder.

QuickLook previewing a PDF file in Windows 10.

Some functions and supported files.

The tool has other additional functions. For example, pressing Esc hides the preview and pressing Enter runs the current file. Obviously with the directional you navigate through the previews. Similarly, by using Ctrl+mouse wheel it is possible to zoom in. The following is a list of available file types:

Image files such as .png, .jpg, .bmp and .gif

Compressed files such as .zip, .rar, .7z.

Text files, and PDF files.

Office documents such as .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, and .pptx.

Video files such as .mp4, .mkv, .m2ts

HTML and HTML files

MarkDown files.

On the other hand, QuickLook integrates perfectly with Files, the great option for the file explorer. So you can have previews along with this great file manager. Very well, this way we have seen how to enable the preview of any file in Windows 10. Enjoy it!

Hello! It is rumored that this year Microsoft will renew the look of Windows 10. For example, the file browser is one of them. Since it is an essential working tool. Besides, it is incredible that it keeps the look from old editions. On the other hand, systems such as macOS and Unix have updated this element. But as far as Windows 10 is concerned, there are still no changes or evolution. Fortunately, the community of developers is very enthusiastic. So today we show you an extended free and open source option. We present you Files, the best option for the Windows 10 File Explorer.

Files for Windows 10 incorporates the tabbed view.

Certainly improvements and changes are expected for Windows 10. In fact, here we show you how to enable the new Windows 10X file explorer. This is an interesting option. However, it is oriented to files in the cloud. Nevertheless, these versions are far from a definitive final deliver. So today we show you a project with almost a couple of years of development. Files are available for download from the Microsoft Store. In addition, the project is hosted in GitHub. Similarly, Files offers the basic functions of the Windows file browser. But it also has an interesting addition. And that is that it incorporates the tabs. Additionally, it has a modern design inspired by Fluent Design. Similarly, the context menu works perfectly. So you only need to right-click on the mouse to see it in action. Any additional downloaded functions will be displayed normally.

Files working with the Windows 10 context menu.

An innovative and attractive design.

The design is very elegant and attractive. Because the tabs take up the right space on the top bar. In addition, it now incorporates the dual panel view. That is, it is possible to view folders in two different locations in the same window. Therefore, productivity is increased.

Files showing tabs and the dual panel mode.

The app offers many customization options. For example, choose the browser’s home page. You can even select the default terminal application. As for the display mode, it is very similar to that of the Windows file browser. For example, large icons, small icons, medium icons, details, etc. Similarly, it manages hidden files and extensions.

Another interesting aspect is an ongoing task panel. It displays notifications of operations performed by the browser. Such as the time remaining when copying or moving files. It even asks if you want to delete an item permanently when you delete it. That is, whether to go through the Recycle bin.

In short, these are the most relevant aspects of Files, the best option for the Windows 10 file browser. I’ve been using it for some time, and it’s practically flawless. Beyond some eventual lag when using the dual panel. We assume that with updates it will improve performance. However, it is my favorite option to browse the archives. See you later!

A little problem has come up recently. I needed to compress a large file and the internet connection was a little bad. Also, I didn’t want to set up an FTP or samba server and I started researching. In this post, I will tell you how to share files in Linux using a tool called Feem.

Sometimes our reliable internet connections can suffer some kind of problem. And we need to share a big file to a computer that is close to us, what would we do? One solution is to use mobile data or in a computer network, to use an internal FTP server something like that, but it is worth to do it to pass a photo album to a specific person? I think not.

The answer to the previous problem is to share it offline. For this, we have an application called Feem.

Feem allows us to share files offline between devices that are within the same wired network or Wifi. Of course, with wireless connections, it gains a lot of potentials. It does it using the speed of the router as well as our Wifi device.

According to the project’s website, it is like using Bluetooth but 50x faster. This makes transferring very large files easy. But being offline means that we have no limits of any kind when transferring files. No servers, no clouds, and no limits.

On the other hand, Feem is an application that you can install on almost any device because it has versions for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and of course Linux. So, you can share files on Linux easily.

Similarly, although Feem has a free version, also has a paid version that allows you to customize and extend the functions of it.

The Feem features are:

It’s very fast because it works on Lan Networks.

No transfer limits.

Quite safe because it has no interaction with servers. They also add transfer with TLS.

Supports many devices because it is cross-platoform.

You can pause the transfer and not lose any progress. That is, you can resume it.

Also, add a chat to communicate with the team that will receive the file.

Using Feem to share files on Linux

One of the things I liked most about Feem is the ease with which you can work with him. Even to install it is a simple thing.

Feem is available for Linux in AppImage format. That is, it is a format that any Linux distribution will recognize. So once you download it, just assign it execution permissions and then double click it and it will open.

1.- Feem

There you will see the requirements. You have to install Feem on the devices and connect to the same wifi network. Easy.

2.- Using Feem to share files on Linux

That’s how easy it is to use.

Every time a device with Feem installed is on your wifi, it will be available. Select the file you want to receive and that’s it. The other device has to accept.

You can also accompany this with a chat.

That simple and as you see in the picture, I used it to share a file with an Android device.

Hi, how are you? Windows 10 has a huge amount of folders and files. Additionally, as computers get better and storage increases, then the number of files grows. Consequently, nobody likes to lose access to any files. In those cases, there are tools such as folder synchronization programs. These programs allow making security backups in the cloud, being of great help to solve problems in the system. However, today we will talk about a tool that allows synchronizing folders between local drives. Well, in this opportunity we will show you how SyncToy works, a Microsoft application. This app is free and easy to use. And within its functions is that it allows you to synchronize two PC folders in Windows 10.

What is SyncToy and how does it work?

SyncToy is a Microsoft proposal for Windows 10 users. Its main function is to synchronize the content of two folders within the same computer. In addition, it uses an attractive but simple graphic interface to make the task easier. In the first place, download the program from this link. Once the program has been downloaded and installed, this initial window will appear. It asks you to create the new folder to be paired.

Create a new folder to be paired

From now on the folders will be called Left Folder and Right Folder.

Select the folders to be paired

Modes of operation of the program.

From now on, the app offers three different modes of operation. Below, we will briefly detail each one of them.

SyncToy Options

In the first option you will synchronize all files and folders. Consequently, if we delete something from either, it will also be deleted from the other. On the other hand Echo copies all new and updated files from the left to right folder. If we delete or rename a file on the left, it will also be deleted or renamed on the right. Finally, Contribute copies the new and updated files and folders from the left to right. Files renamed from the first one will also be renamed to the right, but no files or folders will be deleted in either. Consequently, when you delete a file in the left folder, it will not be deleted on the right. Once the corresponding option has been selected, it is necessary to assign a name to the pair.

Assign the name to the pair

Then the process of synchronizing the data within the folder will begin. I wait a few seconds according to the size of the folder.

Folder Synchronization

Conclusion

Finally, we have seen how to synchronize two folders inside the PC in Windows 10. From now on, you only have to manually activate the synchronization process. This is a great tool for managing the content of two tools. In addition, it is an app provided by Microsoft and it is free. I hope you enjoyed this post.
