Linux is an open system with many variants. Each one of them with its particularities, advantages, and disadvantages. However, not everyone can install some of them, that’s why today I’ll show you how to install Fedora 29.

Recently Fedora 29 came to light, loaded with some novelties that although not too many are important as Fedora Modularity.

With this in mind, many users plan to download it but do not always have the solid knowledge to do so. Or they just need a little help. That’s why this article will teach you how to install Fedora 29.

Preparing the installation

If you are not sure whether to install Fedora 29 on your main computer or just want to try it out, you can install it on a virtual machine. To do this you must have modern hardware that can withstand the load.

However, to install Fedora 29 in its main 64-bit Workstation version, you need at least 2Gb of Ram, a Dual Core processor that supports 64 bits and 20Gb of hard disk space. Come on, modern hardware can do it.

Let’s install Fedora 29

After downloading it from its official site, it prepares a pen drive with the system and starts booting. You will find this first screen:

1.- Fedora 29 first screen

In it, you must select the first option to start the Live session.

2.- Loading the system

Then, the installer will give you two options. There is an option to try Fedora from an uninstalled Live session. And the other one where you can start the installation. Choose the second one to continue.

3.- Two options: Try or install it.

The next step is to choose the language of the installation. This is up to you. However, I believe that although it is in English, the steps are clear.

4.- Language selection

As you continue, it will give you a summary of the installation. Where you will have to partition the disk and keyboard layout.

5.- Installation summary

On the partitioning screen, if you choose automatic, the process is simpler, but I’m going to show you how to partition manually so that you can do it yourself.

Conclusion

As you can see, installing Fedora 29 is not such a complex matter. So I invite you to give this great version of the community distribution sponsored by Red Hat a try.

By the way, speaking of Red Hat, did you know it was acquired by IBM? We’ll tell you about it here.

1.- Fedora

Let’s see why this distribution is so special.

Fedora has the Red Hat power

Fedora is a Linux distribution that uses RPM packages. It is sponsored by Red Hat and provides an updated, innovative and stable system. As expected it is available for free and although its default desktop environment is GNOME, it is also possible to download different Spin with other desktop environments such as KDE, XFCE or Mate.

One issue to which Fedora pays a lot of attention is that of containers, servers, and virtualization. Something that is very much happening these days. Proof of this is that it has three main versions. In the first place is the Workstation version, focused on home computers and everyday work. It is the most used and popular version. Then, it is Server oriented to servers using the best and latest tools of DataCenter. Finally, Atomic is specialized in Docker and Kubernetes technologies.

If a distribution is sponsored by an open source giant like Red Hat, it’s because it’s good and its latest version even better.

Fedora 29 Available

A new version was released recently, and in Matthew Miller’s words is the best yet. This is partly due to the updated package and the fact that this version is the first to be modular.

Fedora Modularity is a technology that has been tested for some time by Fedora that allows you to install several versions of the same package without modifying the basic libraries of the system. As you can notice, it is an innovation within Linux. And this is perhaps the most important novelty of this version.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this new version comes with Linux Kernel 4.18 and GNOME 3.30 as the desktop environment, thus ensuring compatibility with most recent hardware.

2.- GNOME is the default DE of Fedora

How to Upgrade from Fedora 28

It is possible to upgrade from Fedora 28 if you prefer. First, you must update all system packages. Open a terminal and run:

:~$ sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

It is then necessary to install the DNF plugin to update the system version. To do this, type.

:~$ sudo dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade

Once you have finished, you can start the system update.

:~$ sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=29

The above command will download all the new packages needed for the upgrade. In case you have problems with the update, you can add the –allowerasing option to enable the system to make the changes for the update.

Finally, reboot and complete the upgrade:

:~$ sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot

Updating Fedora

The update will take a while. When you reboot the system. You will have Fedora 29

Conclusion

Fedora is a great Linux distribution and this new version is even more innovative and promises to be the best that has been taken so far.

Fedora is one of the most popular Linux distros. It’s almost about the 15th birthday of Fedora. The first release of Fedora was back in 2003. It has already come a long way to make its path into many platforms including personal computers and servers. Fedora always offers the latest bleeding-edge technology directly to the users.

In the birthday of Fedora, the greatest present is Fedora itself with the latest release – Fedora 29. This one, in particular, is of great excitement as a number of new features come up in this release.

Fedora is the testing lab of RHEL as Red Hat brings the latest and newest features to Fedora first, then integrates into their industry-leading RHEL.

New features

Here is a short of all the new features that are coming to Fedora 29.

GNOME 3.30 – Fedora 29 comes up with the latest version of GNOME (v3.30). It offers its own set of changes and features.

Fedora Modularity – This is the most exciting feature of the latest Fedora release. It allows shipping various packages over the same base of Fedora. Now, users don’t have to upgrade the entire OS. For example, users can now select Node.js v8 or v10 or, choose between the versions of Kubernetes matching OopenShift Origin etc.
