If you’re a developer, you may have already heard the name of Eclipse, right? Eclipse is an open-source, community-driven project that aims for delivering a universal development platform. The IDE is also widely popular for its cross-platform support.

Eclipse is widely used for Java programming. The IDE itself is mostly written in Java. However, over time, it now has the capability of supporting other popular programming languages like Java, C/C++, Python, and Perl.

Today, we’ll be enjoying Eclipse IDE on the majestic Arch Linux. Truth be told, I’ll be using Manjaro Linux – a refined, Arch-based Linux distro that offers a pretty good looking environment with numerous tweaks to make Arch more easily accessible to new to advanced Linux users.

Installing Eclipse IDE

Eclipse is available in 2 forms – from the default repository and snap package.

Installing Eclipse from software repo

Get the installation package of Eclipse –

# Eclipse Java

sudo pacman -S eclipse-java

# Eclipse JEE

sudo pacman -S eclipse-jee

# Eclipse CPP

sudo pacman -S eclipse-cpp

# Eclipse JavaScript

sudo pacman -S eclipse-javascript

# Eclipse PHP

sudo pacman -S eclipse-php

Note that if you install one version of Eclipse, then installing any other version will cause conflicts within the system. For enabling support for other languages, you have to use the respective plugin.

Installing Eclipse from snap

For installing any snap package, the system must have the snap client. In the case of Arch and other Arch-based distros, snap client isn’t available on the default software repository. We have to grab its source from AUR, compile and install first.

Make sure that your system has “git” installed –

sudo pacman -S git

Now, grab the source of snap client –

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/snapd.git

Start the building and installation process –

cd snapd
makepkg -si

Enable the “systemd” unitthat manages the communication socket –

sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.socket

Run the following command for enabling the “classic” snap package support –

sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap

Now, install Eclipse snap –

sudo snap install eclipse --classic

Using Eclipse

Once the installation is complete, start Eclipse –

Select the workspace directory –

For creating a new project, go to File >> New >> Java Project –

Fill in the information –

Define Java settings for your project –

You can also make a module name –

Android Studio is the official IDE for the development of applications for the Android operating system. Android is present in most cell phones in the world. That’s why developers create their applications for Android, because they know it will be used by millions.

With this in mind, I’ll show you how to install Android Studio on Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 18.10.

0. Prerequisites

The process is simple, however, it is good to keep in mind that it requires some handling of the terminal and its terminology.

On the other hand, you need a user who has enabled the use of sudo for terminal commands.

Finally you need a computer with Ubuntu 18.04 or Ubuntu 18.10 (BETA) installed. Obvious.

1. Installing Java from Oracle

Android Studio requires java for its operation and therefore I recommend that you install the official version of Java 8. Java 8 is the version that best supports Android Studio and also thanks to Webupd8 ppa installation becomes very simple.

First, open a terminal and run:

:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java

Next:

:~$ sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer

During the process, you will be asked to accept Oracle’s license terms.

And to define this version of Java as the main one, install oracle-java8-set-default. Run:

:~$ sudo apt install oracle-java8-set-default

In this case it was installed by default.

Then, check the installed Java version.

As you can see, everything is going OK.

2. Install Android Studio

The easiest way to install Android Studio on Ubuntu is through a PPA. With this we make sure to install the latest version available and a simple way.

Open a terminal and run:

:~$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:maarten-fonville/android-studio

Now, you can install it.

:~$ sudo apt install android-studio

The time it takes depends on your internet speed.

3. Complete the installation

At the end it is necessary to run the wizard to complete the installation. Run:

:~$ /opt/android-studio/bin/studio.sh

Next, you have to specify the type of installation.

In this screen you will be able to choose the theme that android studio will use.

Finally the download of all components will start.

And that’s it.

As you can see, the installation is simple and will depend on your internet connection to ensure that it is done in the shortest time possible.

The latest version of Eclipse IDE is called Eclipse Oxygen. In order to install Eclipse on Linux, it’s a bit of a work. Don’t worry; it’s very easy with the step-by-step guide provided below. Take a note that I’m going to install “Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers”. You can use any other version of Eclipse according to your need. Just make sure to change the file name in the commands.

1. Download the package

Eclipse Oxygen IDE is an open-source and free to download software. Get your favorite Eclipse Oxygen IDE edition. Here, I’ve downloaded the Java EE edition (eclipse-jee-oxygen-2-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz).

Download the TAR.GZ file and place it into a suitable folder.

2. Install Eclipse Oxygen

Now, we’ll be installing Eclipse IDE. Note that the process will install Eclipse in “/opt” directory. Then, you have to create a symlink into “/usr/local/bin/” directory for the IDE’s executable files and verify symbolic path via “ls” command.

• Start a terminal.
• Navigate to the folder where you put “eclipse-jee-oxygen-2-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz”.
• Run these commands:

$ sudo tar xfz eclipse-jee-oxygen-2-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz -C /opt/
$ ls /opt/eclipse/
$ sudo ln -s /opt/eclipse/eclipse /usr/local/bin/eclipse
$ ls -al /usr/local/bin/eclipse

It’s time now to create a desktop launcher for Eclipse in the system applications directory. Run this command:

$ sudo nano /usr/share/applications/eclipse-oxygen.desktop

Go to the folder, open the “eclipse-oxygen.desktop” and enter the following codes:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Eclipse Oxygen
Comment=Eclipse Oxygen IDE
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Exec=/usr/local/bin/eclipse
Icon=/opt/eclipse/icon.xpm
Categories=GNOME;Application;Development;
Terminal=false
StartupNotify=true

3. Start Eclipse

Installation is complete. Now, it’s time to start using Eclipse. From the GNOME dash, search for Eclipse and launch.

At the first start, you’ll have to define the workspace path where Eclipse will store all the works. You can also choose the default path “/home/<username>/eclipse-workspace”.

Click “Launch”.
