System32 is one of the most important folders in Windows. As well as program files. The latter is where the installed third-party applications are stored. However, System32 contains the files and binaries essential for the operation of the operating system. For this reason, Microsoft is testing a new directory. We are referring to OEMDRIVERS, a dedicated folder for third-party drivers. We have reason to believe that Windows 10 could implement a folder dedicated to third-party drivers.

A new directory is coming for Windows 10.

We owe this discovery to the good Albacore. The Twitter user specialized in scanning Windows source code. And it is an important new development. It means that non-Microsoft drivers leave the critical System32 directory. Currently, all drivers are inside the DriverStore folder, included in Systm32. This sometimes causes security risks. On the other hand, it is well known that drivers are an essential part of the operating system. They are fundamental in the connection between the operating system and the connected devices. However, a failure can compromise the stability and security of the system. That said, it is not logical to group all types of drivers into the same folder. Certainly, the system checks the legitimacy of the driver before adding it. But it is still a potential security risk.

In the preview version of Windows, specifically in build 21343, the OEMDRIVERS folder has appeared. The purpose of this folder is to host non-Microsoft drivers. In addition, it is located outside System32. Concretely, its path is C:\Windows\OEMDRIVERS. Albacore explains that before the first boot of the system, the drivers are automatically migrated.

Looks like Microsoft wants to isolate 3rd party drivers on Desktop similarly to how they isolate them on 10X. No dedicated partition, but a folder will do. pic.twitter.com/4DatghWNas
— Albacore (@thebookisclosed) March 25, 2021

As mentioned, there is no direct benefit to the user. However, this change would improve the security of the system. So you read it here first, Windows 10 could implement a folder dedicated to third-party drivers. So long!

Hello! Consider this: The operating system is already saturated, and giving problems. Therefore, it is necessary to reinstall Windows. In such a case, a common problem is the drivers. They are often not available or not compatible. Consequently, it is problematic to update drivers for elements such as network, audio, graphics, etc. For such reason, it is advisable to have a backup of the drivers that are working correctly. There are certainly third-party programs that offer this feature. However, today we are going to use a Windows 10 application. Read on to learn how to backup drivers in Windows 10.

How to create driver back up in Windows 10 using PowerShell.

As mentioned, we will use PowerShell. It is well known that this is a command-line interface of Windows 10. Therefore, we will use some commands to do the backup. The first thing you have to do is to open this console with administrator privileges. With this intention, press the Win+X combination. Please look at the image below:

Running a PowerShell with administrator privileges

Once the PowerShell is executed, it is necessary to use the following syntax:

Export-WindowsDriver -Online -Destination Path where we will store them

In this case, we have created a folder on the E: drive called Drivers_Backup. Therefore, the command will look like this:

Export-WindowsDriver -Online -Destination E:\Drivers_Backup

Backing up the drivers in the selected location.

Pressing Enter will start the driver export process:

You can go to the selected location to validate the backup of the drivers.

<img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="787" src="//1081754738.rsc.cdn77.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/dri5-1024x787.png" alt="Backup of drivers in the selected location.

List of drivers installed in Windows 10

To see the list better organized, please use the following command:

Get-WindowsDriver -Online -All | Out-GridView

How to restore drivers from the command prompt.

Once backed up, it is possible to update the drivers. With this in mind, we will use the command prompt with administrator privileges. With this intention, type CMD in the search bar:

Launching a CMD with administrator privileges

Once there, we will use the following syntax.

dism /online /Add-Driver/Driver:Path to controller/Recurse

Restoring a driver with CMD.

Restore and update drivers with PowerShell

This process can also be performed from PowerShell. To do so, we will use the following syntax.

Add-WindowsDriver Path to controller/Recurse

In this way we have seen how to back up the drivers in Windows 10. Consequently, this copy allows you to reinstall the system safely. Thus, the correct functioning of the hardware is guaranteed. See you soon!

Hello! A faulty driver can cause many problems for a computer. In fact, the main warning signal is the BSOD. This is usually caused by a problematic driver. Fortunately, there are blue screen error codes and memory dumps to tell you what is wrong. With this information we can go to the misbehaving driver and update or remove it completely. However, sometimes these codes are useless. In fact, the computer may not be able to locate the specific driver failure. Or even, there is no BSOD and the computer just freezes. In these cases, I suggest you use Diver Verifier. This tool puts additional pressure on the controllers to provoke a response. That is to say, if there is a mistake, then the app detects it and reports it through a blue screen. So today we will see how to check for driver errors with Driver Verifier.

Prerequisite

As mentioned, Diver Verifier identifies the problem through a blue screen or BSOD. In addition, you will most likely not be able to log in before the system crashes. For that reason it is highly recommended that you create and restore your system. If you don’t know how to do it, please watch this tutorial. But even without having made this step, it is possible to solve the BSOD as we will see ahead.

How to use the driver verifier in Windows 10

As we have detailed, the main function of this app is to identify problematic drivers. So the first thing we will do is to run the app. With this intention, please press the Win+Q combination and type verifier.

Once the app is launched, please click on Create custom settings (for code developers)

Please click on Create custom settings (for code developers)

The following window offers the set of tests that will be done on the controllers. Please check all of them, except those corresponding to Randomized low resources simulation and DDI Compliance Check.

On the next screen, click on Select driver name from a list.

Select the name of the drivers from a list.

Most likely, the problematic drivers are different from those provided by Microsoft. Therefore, please follow the steps below. First, click on the Provider tab. This will organize the drivers according to their manufacturer. Then, check the boxes for other non-Microsoft providers. Then click on Finish.

Please select the drivers not provided by Microsoft.

When you press Finish, Windows will ask you to restart your computer. When you do this, Windows will start with Driver Verifier enabled. Please continue to use the computer normally. If the app generates a blue screen, please check the error message and restart the computer.

Disabling Driver Verifier

Back in Windows it is possible to disable Diver Verifier in two ways. In the first place run the tool and use the option Delete existing settings. Then click on finish.

Please select Delete existing settings

If you cannot enter Driver Verifier there is still another option. To do so, enter a CMD and run the following command:

verifier /bootmode resetonbootfail

Alternatively you can run this command:

verifier /reset

On the other hand, if you have created a restore point, then you can use that option.

Ultimately we have seen how to check for driver errors with Driver Verifier. Certainly it is a tool more than interesting to solve problems of controllers in the system. All right, that’s it for now. Please stay tuned for more news on Windows 10.

Hello, how are you? November is about to end, and this month’s update has reached several users with Windows 10. Here at osradar.com, we have commented on the details of this one. However, some users have reported bugs that have forced to uninstall it. Or in other cases, even the update has been completely stopped. As you will remember, this update is a Service Pack, and theoretically should be available to most users. The only requirement is that they have installed the May 2019 Update. In fact, both updates share the same kernel and system files. However, as we mentioned at the beginning, the update has compatibility problems with AVG and Avast antivirus.

An issue with old versions of Avast and AVG.

Avast or AVG users who have Antivirus version 19.5.4444.567 or earlier are affected by this problem. Consequently, it is recommended that you update your antivirus applications before attempting to upgrade to Windows 10 1903 or 1909. Now, the AVG and Avast sites are offering support to their customers to solve this situation. Microsoft’s recommendation is that you do not attempt to force the update by any means. At least until you have updated the antivirus.

Older versions of AVG and Avast, present problem with the November update.

Inconvenient with some controllers.

Not only are these antivirus versions incompatible with the update. There have also been reported problems with older versions of Realtek bluetooth drivers. To this, we must now add some Qualcomm Wi-Fi drivers.
If you have an old version of Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi adapters, when trying to upgrade to Windows 10 1909 you will receive a warning that will prevent you from continuing. This compatibility issue can cause loss of Wi-Fi connectivity after upgrading your system, and so they have blocked the upgrade. The solution is to manually update the drivers from the official website. After this, you should be able to update correctly.

Problems with Qualcomm and Realtek drivers

In short, Windows 10 updates promise stability and improvements, but this is not always the case. In fact, from here we always recommend waiting a reasonable time before installing them. This is all for the moments before I go I want to invite you to see our post about DNS over HTTPS.
