Hello, dear friends. Many users who are not used to the Linux upgrade system, may be confused about the way it is done. Recently, Debian 11.1 has been released as one of the first maintenance releases of this great version. In this tutorial, you will learn how to upgrade from Debian 11 to Debian 11.1.

Debian 11.1 is available

This point release mainly adds corrections for security issues, along with a few adjustments for serious problems. Security advisories have already been published separately and are referenced where available.

One of the things the development team emphasizes is that this is not a new major release of Debian, but a bug-fix release.

Another thing to note is that those who frequently install updates from security.debian.org won’t have to update many packages, and most such updates are included in the point release. So the importance of always updating the system and doing so frequently is emphasized.

So this is a maintenance release but we still need to get it on the system to avoid security problems.

In this post, we will show you how to do it using the terminal without any problems.

Upgrade from Debian 11 to Debian 11.1

The upgrade process is very easy and should not give us any problems. However, it’s also not a bad idea to back up the most sensitive data on your disk to an external device.

Also, it is a good idea to have as few external repositories on your system as possible.

So, check the current version of Debian.

lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Debian
Description: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye)
Release: 11
Codename: bullseye

After that, open a terminal and update the current package.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Now perform the system upgrade

sudo apt dist-upgrade

After this, the process will be finished and you will have Debian 11.1 up and running.

This way the upgrade has been successful and we can continue our work.

Conclusion

In this post, you learned how to upgrade Debian 11 to Debian 11.1 to get the latest Debian security features. I hope you found this post useful, although simple, it can be of help to many newbies to the system.

Hello, friends. In this post, we will show you how to install Vivaldi on Debian 11 This web browser is getting a lot of buzz in Linux because of its link with Manjaro.

What is Vivaldi?

When we talk about Vivaldi in Linux we don’t mean the great music composer but a modern and efficient web browser that was born some time ago.

Vivaldi is one of the best web browsers in the world. With the permission of Firefox and Google Chrome, Vivaldi has many modern features that make it interesting.

One of them is that it allows you to group tabs, it doesn’t track you by default, it includes an ad-blocker and it even integrates an email client.

On top of that, it includes everything you would expect in a modern browser: data synchronization, GUI customization, support for Chrome plugins, so the options are many.

So Vivaldi is an excellent browser for everyday use and this is what the Manjaro Cinnamon developers thought because they decided to replace Firefox with Vivaldi. This is one of the most important pieces of news of the last days in Linux, but it gives us an idea that the browser is very good and efficient.

Install Vivaldi on Debian 11

One of the few bad things about Vivaldi is that it is not open source. Besides that, it is not included in the official Debian 11 repositories, but its installation is not complex thanks to the DEB package provided by the developers.

To do so, go to the Vivaldi website and download the DEB package for Linux.

After downloading the package, you can install it by double-clicking on it or running it in the terminal.

cd Downloads
sudo apt install ./vivaldi*.deb
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting 'vivaldi-stable' instead of './vivaldi-stable_4.1.2369.21-1_amd64.deb'
The following additional packages will be installed:
 fonts-liberation libu2f-udev
Recommended packages:
 adobe-flashplugin
The following NEW packages will be installed:
 fonts-liberation libu2f-udev vivaldi-stable
0 upgraded, 3 newly installed, 0 to remove and 10 not upgraded.
Need to get 834 kB/86.0 MB of archives.
After this operation, 295 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

So when the process is finished, you can run it from the main menu.

Uninstalling Vivaldi web browser on Debian 11

In case you want to uninstall Vivaldi from the system, you only have to run the following command

sudo apt remove vivaldi

This will permanently remove the package.

Conclusion

With Vivaldi, we will be able to have everything we want a modern web browser to be. And with the certainty of being secure and private, it adds an extra. It’s not perfect, we miss the fact that it’s not open source, but it’s still a worthwhile application.

Untitled Document.md

Hello, friends. Today we’re going to talk about how to install Atom on Debian 11.

If there is one thing that makes Atom different from Sublime Text and Visual Studio Code is that it is open source. Because Atom is released under the MIT license.

Why do I compare Atom with Sublime Text and Visual Studio Code? Because Atom is an advanced text editor that allows us to write code in many different languages very easily.

As it is an open-source application we can examine its source code without problems. In fact, the developers encourage us to try it because it is “the hackable editor of the 21st century”.

With Atom we can have everything that advanced text editor gives us, syntax autocompletion, syntax highlighting for many languages, GIT integration, theme support, debugging, and a lot of plugins that even increase its functionality.

It’s worth adding that Atom is free so we can use it in almost any environment or situation.

The only downside I find is that it is an Electron application which makes it a bit more resource-consuming. Of course, this shouldn’t be a problem for modern computers.

So, let’s install it.

Install Atom on Debian 11

Atom provides good support for Linux. Especially for Debian because we can install it in several different ways.

Install Atom on Debian using the DEB package

On the Atom website, you will find a DEB package that you can download without any problems. To do so, go to the Atom website or their Github profile and from there you can download the DEB package.

Once downloaded you can install it by double-clicking on the DEB file or from the terminal using APT which is the Debian package manager.

cd Downloads/
sudo apt install ./atom-amd64.deb
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting 'atom' instead of './atom-amd64.deb'
The following additional packages will be installed:
 git git-man liberror-perl patch
Suggested packages:
 git-daemon-run | git-daemon-sysvinit git-doc git-el git-email git-gui gitk
 gitweb git-cvs git-mediawiki git-svn ed diffutils-doc
The following NEW packages will be installed:
 atom git git-man liberror-perl patch
0 upgraded, 5 newly installed, 0 to remove and 5 not upgraded.
Need to get 7,514 kB/145 MB of archives.
After this operation, 707 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

If you want to download it via terminal, just run:

wget https://github.com/atom/atom/releases/download/v1.58.0/atom-amd64.deb

In any case, installation is easy.

At the end of the process, you can open the application from the main menu and start working.

Atom on Debian 11

Install Atom via flatpak

Flatpak is a technology of packages isolated from the system and its libraries. This means that they can work universally on almost any system. Also, it adds an extra layer of security to the system because the program will not make use of the system libraries.

In this chaos, we can install Atom via Flatpak and get the latest stable version of Atom.

So, install Flatpak from a terminal

sudo apt install flatpak

Then add the Flathub repository where the Atom package is located.

sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

Then proceed to install it by running this command.

sudo flatpak install flathub io.atom.Atom

At the end of the process, you will be able to run it from the main menu or by executing the command

flatpak run io.atom.Atom

This way you can install Atom.

Removing Atom on Debian 11

If you no longer want to have Atom on Debian 11 then the best thing to do is to remove it from the system. If you have installed Atom using the DEB package then you can remove it by running

sudo apt remove atom

Or via Flatpak by executing the following command

sudo flatpak remove io.atom.Atom

This will leave no trace of the application on the system.

Conclusion

Atom is an advanced and powerful text editor but with the incentive of being open source and that we can use it without any limitations. Moreover, we can customize it in almost any aspect.

I will learn how to install it, although simple, it can help many novices to get started in programming.

Hello, friends. In this post in the form of a guide, you will learn how to install Microsoft Visual Studio Code on Debian 11.

We already know that Debian 11 is a multipurpose operating system so it is not only used on servers but also on the desktop. Especially for users who need stability to develop their work on it. This is the case for many developers who see Debian as an ideal system with no surprises for their work.

So, on Linux, we are fortunate to have many different applications available. We can even install applications created by Microsoft (!) But we have to admit that Visual Studio Code is a great application and every day it is used by more and more developers.

With this powerful text editor, you can create your code and it has features similar to an IDE. It includes debugging support, integrated Git control, syntax highlighting, smart code completion, code snippets, and code refactoring. In addition to this, the editor is customizable and users can change the appearance and global settings.

But not only this, it supports a lot of extensions that make Visual Studio Code have incredible functionalities. Some of them add support for many other programming languages like C++ or YML.

So, let’s install Visual Studio Code on Debian 11

Install Visual Studio Code on Debian 11

Although this is a quite popular application, it is not in the official Debian 11 repositories. But is not a problem to install it because Microsoft provides us with a special DEB package for Debian.

So, you can download it either from the terminal or from the graphical interface.

Open your favorite web browser, and go to the Visual Studio Code download section.

1.- Download Visual Studio Code on Debian 11

Now download the Debian DEB package.

Then, open your file browser and navigate to the download folder.

Now double click on the package to install it.

Or, install it using the terminal

cd Downloads
sudo apt install ./code*.deb

Following whichever procedure you choose, now you just need to run it from the main menu.

2.- Visual Studio Code on Debian 11

As a repository is also added, you can then keep the application up to date from the system update manager.

Enjoy it.

Remove Visual Studio Code

If you no longer wish to use the program then it is best to uninstall it. To do so, just run this command in the terminal

sudo apt remove code

This way there will be no trace of the application on your system.

Conclusion

Visual Studio Code is one of the best text editors out there. Widely used by many developers it has become indispensable for many of them. This is due to its ease of use and the features it offers that make coding easier. What’s more, there are plugins of many types to help with the process.

Hello dear friends. Firefox and Google Chrome are the main dominators of the web browser market, but this does not mean that there are no other alternatives out there. And I think one of the most solid is Opera. So, in this post, you will learn how to install Opera on Debian 11. The process is very easy but it can be worth it.

Introducing to Opera Web Browser

What Opera always boasts about is being a modern web browser. This is because with Opera we can gain integration with social networks like Facebook and Instagram but also with Whatsapp.

Some of the main features of Opera are:

Integrated AdBlocker so that pages can load better.

Opera has a VPN that will help you to be anonymous on the Internet and improve your security.

Chat and surf at the same time with built-in messengers on the side of your browser.

The browser supports themes, keyboard shortcuts, and your favorite bookmarks from one place. Also, Opera features cross-device synchronization so you can use it from anywhere.

In addition to this, Opera is based on a browsing engine similar to Chrome, so the speed of loading websites is guaranteed.

So, let’s get started.

Install Opera Web Browser on Debian 11

Opera is not available from the official Debian repositories as it is not open-source software. But it is possible to install it with the package provided from the project website.

So, go to the Opera website.

1.- Opera web browser

Then, click on Download and it will automatically recognize the operating system and present the DEB package.

2.- Downloading Opera on Debian 11

Then, we can install it by opening the file browser and double-clicking on the downloaded file.

Also, we can do the process via the terminal which is faster. Open a terminal and access the folder where Opera has been downloaded which is usually
Downloads
.

cd Downloads

Now install Opera

sudo apt install ./opera*

This way it will install without problems. Also during the installation, you will be asked if you want to receive Opera updates along with the system. That is, you are asked if you want to add the Opera repository to the system. Answer Y.

Now run it from the main menu and it will start.

3.- Opera Web Browser running

So, enjoy it

Hello, friends. This post is directed to electronics or related students who need to simulate electronic boards for educational or even professional purposes. This is because, after this post, you will learn how to install SimulIDE on Debian 11.

According to the official website of the project:

SimulIDE is a simple real-time electronic circuit simulator, intended for hobbyist or students to learn and experiment with simple electronic circuits and microcontrollers, supporting PIC, AVR, and Arduino.

So this kind of application allows us to simulate before creating electronics. As we are told they are oriented to students but can be used by many professionals in the field. This is because the application is really easy to use, just drag components from the list, drop into the circuit, connect them and push the power button to see how it works.

Also, it includes a code editor for GcBasic, Arduino, PIC asm, and AVR asm. Although it is in a very early stage of development, it is perfectly usable.

I have not mentioned it, but SimulIDE is open source which allows us to use it without restrictions and always with the possibility to examine the source code of the application.

So, let’s go for it.

Install SimulIDE on Debian 11

As far as I have been able to investigate there are no precompiled packages specifically for Debian 11. However, the application is distributed as a binary for all Linux distributions that exist.

First, let’s install the dependencies for Debian 11. Open a terminal and run this pair of commands:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install libqt5svg5 libQt5Multimedia libQt5Xml libQt5Script libQt5SerialPort

This is because SimulIDE is built with QT technology.

So, now download the SimulIDE package for Linux from the SimulIDE web site.

1.- SimulIDE download page

Choose the
Linux 64
package and the download will start. For this post, we are using the stable version.

When the download is finished, open your file browser and you will see the downloaded file.

2.- SimulIDE package

Unzip it and go to the
bin
folder where the compiled package will be.

And simply double-click on the file to start the application.

Hello, friends. For people who like music, one of the first things we do when we first install any Linux distribution is to install Spotify. So, in this post, I will show you how to do it in two fairly simple ways.

Spotify is an online music service that allows us through a monthly fee to enjoy the huge catalog it has. It has applications for almost all operating systems including our beloved Debian 11 And I’m not kidding when I say that this is one of the first things many of us do when installing a new distribution.

Spotify’s clean Spotify application is quite good. It allows us to browse through the entire application catalog quickly and easily. Also, we can play music, add favorites, and do everything that the web version allows us.

Oh, in case I forgot, with Spotify, we will also have at our disposal many podcasts of all possible topics. So let’s go for it.

Install Spotify on Debian 11

For Debian 11 we have several installation methods that we can take advantage of. One of them is through APT. For this, we add the Spotify repository and from there the installation.

On the other hand, we have the Flatpak package that allows us to isolate it from the system and this method not only works for Debian 11 but any distribution.

Let’s start.

Installing Spotify using the repository

In this process, we need to add the repository to our system. To do this, open a terminal and first update Debian

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Now download and add the GPG key from the repository to the system.

curl -sS https://download.spotify.com/debian/pubkey_0D811D58.gpg | sudo apt-key add -

Next, add the Spotify repository to the system

echo "deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list

Now, refresh APT

sudo apt update

And install Spotify by running:

sudo apt install spotify-client

After the installation is finished you can run it from the main menu.

1.- Install Spotify on Debian 11

Install Spotify on Debian 11 via Flatpak

The second method is to use the super reliable Flatpak. So, first, install it on the system

sudo apt install flatpak

Now add the Flathub repository which is where the Spotify package is hosted.

sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

And then install Spotify

sudo flatpak install flathub com.spotify.Client

Finally, run it from the main menu.

Conclusion

In this post, you learned how to install Spotify on Debian 11. This way you can now have it on your system and enjoy the service.

Hello, friends. Security in communications is very important nowadays and every day more and more questions arise about security in WhatsApp. So today I will show you how to install Signal Desktop client on Debian 11 / Ubuntu 20.04 / Linux Mint 20.

What is Signal?

Signal is a messaging service that comes to compete with WhatsApp and Telegram. As you can imagine it is less popular than these two but it is very well valued by advanced users. The reason is that Signal is committed to offering the highest level of privacy possible.

Signal uses an end-to-end encryption protocol called Open Whispers Systems for all communications. This means thatmessages are sent from your mobile phone already encrypted and are only decrypted when they reach the recipient.

While I love installing Telegram Dekstop on Linux, it is also true that Signal offers better security. That is why it is so important for many users.

So, let’s get started.

Install Signal Desktop Client on Debian 11 / Ubuntu 20.04 / Linux Mint 20

One of the great advantages of Signal Desktop Client is that the source code is open to everyone. So you can examine it and see that there are no backdoors or malware. And also as you can imagine, it enjoys great support for Linux and especially DEB distributions.

So, open a terminal and make sure to update the whole system.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Then, download and install the official GPG key from the Signal repository by running these two commands:

wget -O- https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt/keys.asc | gpg --dearmor > signal-desktop-keyring.gpg
cat signal-desktop-keyring.gpg | sudo tee -a /usr/share/keyrings/signal-desktop-keyring.gpg > /dev/null

Now add the official Signal repository run:

echo 'deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/signal-desktop-keyring.gpg] https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt xenial main' | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.list

Refresh the APT cache

sudo apt update

And finally, install Signal by running

sudo apt install signal-desktop

So, enjoy it.

Conclusion

Signal is an application to take into account if we want to have the maximum privacy possible in our communications. Even though it is not that popular, it is useful for many people who don’t want to compromise their communications.

There are many web browsers available for Linux. From the most popular to the most unknown. Well, in this tutorial you will learn how to install Google Chrome on Debian 11.

As we know Debian 11 has recently come out and includes Firefox by default as most Linux distributions. However, there are still those who prefer to use Google Chrome. One cause could be the excellent integration with their mobile version of Android or simply because of the wide variety of extensions available. In any case, we are talking about one of the most important web browsers out there and one of the best. Of that there is no doubt.

Install Google Chrome on Debian 11

Although Google Chrome is not present in the official Debian repositories, this is not a problem for the installation. This is due to the DEB package that we can download from the Google website.

So, from your web browser go to the Google Chrome page

1.- Google Chrome page

Then, click on the Download button and you will be asked to choose between the DEB package and the RPM.

2.- Get Chrome for Linux

Choose the DEB and start the download.

When finished, you can open your file explorer and double click on the downloaded package to start the installation.

Alternatively, you can install it via terminal. In this case, open a terminal and access the folder where you downloaded them. It is usually
Downloads
.

cd Downloads

And with this command, proceed to install Google Chrome on Debian 11

sudo apt install ./google-chrome-stable-stable_current_amd64.deb
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting 'google-chrome-stable' instead of './google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb'
The following additional packages will be installed:
 fonts-liberation libu2f-udev
The following NEW packages will be installed:
 fonts-liberation google-chrome-stable libu2f-udev
0 upgraded, 3 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 834 kB/81.1 MB of archives.
After this operation, 258 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

At the end of the installation, the Google Chrome repository will be added. This will allow you to have the browser updated along with the system.

3.- Google Chrome on Debian 11

Now in the main menu, you can launch Google Chrome without any problems.

So, enjoy it.

Conclusion

Google Chrome has gained its popularity step by step. This makes many users want to use it in Debian 11. So in this post you have learned how to install it.

Hello, friends. The current communications could be said to be at their best. Many tools and services are oriented to it. Today, in this post, you will learn how to install Viber desktop client on Ubuntu 20.04.

What is Viber?

Viber is a mobile messaging service similar to WhatsApp or Telegram. It features messaging and files sending like any other but its principal distinction is that Viber focuses on calls.

So, Viber has support for calls of very good quality that even exceeds those of Whatsapp or Telegram. It is widely used in certain sectors where the security of data transmission is a priority.

Also, your conversations on Viber between all the devices you use, whether mobile, tablet, or desktop, are fully synchronized.

Other features include group chat, sticker creation, shredding messages, and the ability to install it on distribution such as Ubuntu.

Unlike Whatsapp, Viber offers a native client for Linux. This makes it much more convenient to use it from your computer without interrupting your workflow.

Another point where it differs from Whatsapp or Telegram is the possibility of creating communities. Communities are the new social network and the best way to bring people together. To give us an idea, imagine a group chat, only with no limit on the number of members, more administration control, and new conversation features.

Viber takes security very seriously because the encryption keys exist only on the user’s devices and nowhere else. So no one, not even Viber, can read your messages.

So, let’s install it.

Install Viber Desktop App on Ubuntu 20.04 / Linux Mint 20

Viber has a download section where you can find the DEB package for Debian, Ubuntu, and derivatives. Also, you can download the APPImage which should work on any distribution.

So, go to the Viber website and proceed to download the package.

Download Viber Desktop app for Linux

Also, you can download it via terminal with the help of the
wget
command

wget https://download.cdn.viber.com/cdn/desktop/Linux/viber.deb

Then to install it, double click on the package or simply run this command in the terminal.

sudo apt install ./viber.deb

This will install it and when finished, you will be able to run it from the main menu.

When you run it, configure your account so you can enjoy the service.

1.- Viber desktop app on Ubuntu 20.04

Alternatively, you can use Viber by downloading the APPImage file provided. To do this download it from the website or via
wget
.

wget https://download.cdn.viber.com/desktop/Linux/viber.AppImage

Assign it to run permissions

chmod +x viber.AppImage

And run it by double-clicking on the file. Enjoy it.

Removing Viber on Ubuntu 20.04

In case you no longer want to use Viber, you can uninstall it in the following way

sudo apt remove viber

If you used the APPImage, then, there is nothing to uninstall, just remove the file and you are done.

Conclusion

Viber is a messaging veteran that although it is not so popular it has an important market share. Also, its Linux support is quite good which makes it a solid alternative to others.
