Now, we need to download Mantis.

At the time of writing this tutorial, the latest stable version is 2.22.1. So that is the version we will download.

:~$ wget https://sourceforge.net/projects/mantisbt/files/mantis-stable/2.22.1/mantisbt-2.22.1.zip

Then, decompress it using unzip. If unzip is no installed, you can install it using this command:

:~$ sudo apt install unzip

So, decompress the file.

:~$ unzip mantisbt-2.22.1.zip

The next step is to move the generated folder to /srv/ and change its execution permissions and owner.

:~$ sudo mv mantisbt-2.22.1/ /srv/
:~$ sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /srv/mantisbt-2.22.1/
:~$ sudo chown -R 755 /srv/mantisbt-2.22.1/

For Mantis to run smoothly, it is a good idea to create a new Apache virtual host. So, create a new file for it and add the following:

:~$ sudo nano /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/mantis.conf

Install Mantis Bug Tracker on Debian 10 (II)

Open your favorite web browser, and go to your server. You will see this:

As you can see, the image shows all the requirements to install Mantis Bug Tracker. In this case, our Debian 10 meets all of them.

Then, we need to type the MariaDB credentials.

If everything went well, at the bottom of the page you will see the following message.

Click on the Continue link and you will see the login page.

Log in with the user administrator and the password root. The first time you log in you will be asked to either disable this account or simply change the password.

1.- Install Apache web server and PHP

Mantis Bug Tracker requires a web server to work. You can use Apache or Nginx but in this case, I will use Apache because it is very easy to use.

So, open a terminal and run:

:~$ sudo apt install apache2

After that, enable and start the Apache web server service.

:~$ sudo systemctl enable apache2
:~$ sudo systemctl start apache2

Next, you have to install PHP and wget. The program is built using PHP as the programming language. Wget is a CLI tool for download files.

:~$ sudo apt install php php-cli php-fpm php-mysql php-zip php-gd php-mbstring php-curl php-xml php-pear php-bcmath

Then, you have to test the PHP installation. Create a file in the /var/www/html/ folder named test.php.

:~$ sudo nano /var/www/html/test.php

Now, put the following:

phpinfo();
?>

Now, save the changes by pressing CTRL + O and next close the file by pressing CTRL + X.

Next, restart Apache.

:~$ sudo systemctl restart apache2

After that, open the web browser and go to http://SERVER_IP/test.php.

So, PHP and Apache are correctly installed.

2. Install MariaDB

The next step to install Mantis Bug Tracker is to install a database driver. Currently, Mantis is compatible with MariaDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. I will choose MariaDB because it is in the official repositories.

:~$ sudo apt install mariadb-server

After that, set a root password using the mysql_secure_installation script.

:~$ sudo mysql_secure_installation

You can also make other settings by answering each question. I’ll do it this way: Y, N, Y, Y.

Then, it is necessary to create a new database and user for Mantis.

:~$ sudo mysql -u root -p
CREATE DATABASE mantisdb;
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON mantisdb.* TO 'mantisuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'mantispss';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
exit;

3. Install Mantis Bug Tracker

At the time of writing this post the latest stable version of Mantis is 2.19.0 so let’s download it.

:~$ wget https://liquidtelecom.dl.sourceforge.net/project/mantisbt/mantis-stable/2.19.0/mantisbt-2.19.0.zip

Next, decompress it.

:~$ unzip mantisbt-2.19.0.zip

And move it to the /srv folder.

:~$ sudo mv mantisbt-release-2.19.0/ /srv/mantis/

Set the right permissions to the folder.

:~$ sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /srv/mantisbt-2.19.0/
:~$ sudo chmod -R 755 /srv/mantisbt-2.19.0/

Create a new virtual host for Mantis.

:~$ sudo nano /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/mantis.conf

Then, add the following.

        DocumentRoot "/srv/mantisbt-2.19.0"
        ServerName bt.osradar.lan
        ServerAlias www.bt.osradar.lan

So, restart apache.

And complete the installation using the web interface.

4. Complete the installation

Now, go to the web browser and complete the installation.

After that, you have to add the MySQL credentials.

If everything is OK, at the end of the page, you will see this.

Next, log in. The user is administrator and the password is root.

Finally, you will see the main screen.

So, that’s it.

The bug

When you connect your Chromecast or Home device to your Wi-Fi network, you might face a Wi-Fi dropout when trying to access those devices via apps like YouTube. In some cases, your router may be completely inaccessible for a while. For some, they faced temporary disconnect from the internet. TP-Link and Linksys confirm the issue. Other routers like Asus, Netgear, Synology etc. all have been reported to fall into this issue.

What are Chromecast and Home?

Google released Chromecast and Home as a product of their Cast family. Chromecast is a device that you can connect to your TV’s HDMI port. Using your smartphone or PC as a remote, you can control the Chromecast, broadcast videos to your TV from Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu etc.

Google Home is the latest debut as a speaker and a personal assistant at the same time. Using the powerful Google Voice Assistant, this speaker will answer your questions, help you with your tasks and work as a virtual assistant.

The reason

The cause of this bug is behind the mechanics of Google Cast enabled apps like YouTube. If your smartphone is running a recent version of Android, this issue happens more often.

When the app awakens from “sleep mode”, it sends data packets to the network, trying to find out any available Google Cast device(s). Generally, the packets are meant to send every 20 seconds as a pulse. In recent Android versions, those apps start sending a large burst of the so-called “MDNS multicast discovery packets” when waking up from “sleep mode”. This overload of data packets sometimes reaches up to 100,000 packets at a very high speed. According to a TP-Link engineer, the longer the device stays in sleep, the more data packets are sent.

When such data flood occurs in the network, the connection is interrupted/shut down, or the router shuts down. This same type of issue happens when using Google Home, Google’s latest debut in the tech world. It’s been pretty disgusting and infuriating for some.

The fix

Check out your router for the latest firmware. Linksys and TP-Link users can try to upgrade their routers’ firmware to the latest version to tackle the issue. There are many obsolete routers (according to vendors) that receive updates no longer.

If possible, install DD-WRT for your router. It’s a community that supports and develops firmware for various routers. Chances are, your router will receive the latest updates via DD-WRT. Check out DD-WRT. There’re other firmware options available like OpenWRT, Tomato firmware etc.

In case no firmware is available, you can try to disconnect the Google Cast device out of your network to get around the Wi-Fi crash. You may disable the Cast feature of the associated apps from your Android device. On your phone, install the latest Google Play Services.

Many users even bought a brand-new router to get rid of this problem. We’re eagerly waiting for this annoying bug to get away. Until Google fixes the issue, we have to try the above fixes or not to use Cast devices for the time being.
