Hello! The PrivacyTests.org website conducts monthly open-source browser privacy tests. Actually, this test is for a set of 10 browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Opera, Librewolf, Tor Browser, Safari, Ungoogled and Vivaldi. Consequently, the results show a clear advantage in this field of two browsers over the rest: Brave and Librewolf. Certainly, Brave is a browser outside the list of the big boys. However, it is widely known among the most privacy-conscious users. On the other hand, that is not the case with Librewolf, a browser that only entered the PrivacyTests.org tests last January. Where did this browser come from and what does it have to offer? This is something we will unpack today. However, we can tell you that LibreWolf is the browser that best protects your privacy.

From Waterfox to Librewolf

In 2015, a tuned version of Firefox, called Waterfox, began to be developed. Its purpose was to improve performance and privacy management over the original. Subsequently, In 2019, two editions of this browser were born. First, Current (the main one, which maintained that approach). Then we have the Classic (which was constituted as a full-fledged fork to maintain compatibility with the old XPCOM and XUL add-ons).

However, its creator, Alex Kontos, decided in 2020 to sell Waterfox to the British company System1. It should be recalled that shortly before it had also acquired the search engine Startpage. In addition, it already owned an online advertising platform (based on pay-per-click). Users disliked this decision because they understood that the motivations of the new owners would not be appropriate. They were right, as some of their development decisions have already caused some controversy.

So, in 2021, the community decided to start its own alternative project to Waterfox. The intention is to continue using the Firefox code as a base to create a browser that clearly bets on the defense of user privacy. And so Librewolf was born.

What makes it different from other browsers?

Librewolf is often described as a fork of Mozilla Firefox. However, this term is not quite correct. In a fork, from a certain point, each project starts to evolve separately. On the other hand, this is not the case. Indeed, each new version of Librewolf is always compiled based on the latest stable version of Firefox. Therefore, it allows us not to have to choose between privacy and being up-to-date in terms of features or security patches implementation.

Simply put, as with Waterfox, with each release they apply similar adjustments to the Firefox base, summarized as follows:

Enhanced privacy: Tailored settings to maximize privacy, without sacrificing usability. Firefox’s ‘Enhanced tracking protection’ is present by default. It also enforces the deletion of cookies and site data after each session, disables form autofilling. In addition, it protects against fingerprinting by enabling RFP (part of the Tor Uplift project) and disabling WebGL (a strong vector of web ‘fingerprinting’).

Private search engines: Your default search engine is now DuckDuckGo. In addition, it only offers equally private alternatives, such as Searx or Qwant.

No telemetry or intrusive add-ons: No user monitoring, no automatic updater, no adware (Mozilla VPN). No integration with Pocket tool.

Integrated content blocker: Librewolf includes and enables by default one of the best content blockers on the market, uBlock Origin.

Moreover, we are in the presence of a multiplatform project. Therefore, there are installers for Windows, GNU/Linux and macOS. Thus, we have seen that LibreWolf is the browser that best protects your privacy. We are clear that the privacy of our data is vital. Consequently, any measure to protect it is a good thing. That’s all for now, goodbye!

Hello, friends. In this post, we will show you how to install Vivaldi on Debian 11 This web browser is getting a lot of buzz in Linux because of its link with Manjaro.

What is Vivaldi?

When we talk about Vivaldi in Linux we don’t mean the great music composer but a modern and efficient web browser that was born some time ago.

Vivaldi is one of the best web browsers in the world. With the permission of Firefox and Google Chrome, Vivaldi has many modern features that make it interesting.

One of them is that it allows you to group tabs, it doesn’t track you by default, it includes an ad-blocker and it even integrates an email client.

On top of that, it includes everything you would expect in a modern browser: data synchronization, GUI customization, support for Chrome plugins, so the options are many.

So Vivaldi is an excellent browser for everyday use and this is what the Manjaro Cinnamon developers thought because they decided to replace Firefox with Vivaldi. This is one of the most important pieces of news of the last days in Linux, but it gives us an idea that the browser is very good and efficient.

Install Vivaldi on Debian 11

One of the few bad things about Vivaldi is that it is not open source. Besides that, it is not included in the official Debian 11 repositories, but its installation is not complex thanks to the DEB package provided by the developers.

To do so, go to the Vivaldi website and download the DEB package for Linux.

After downloading the package, you can install it by double-clicking on it or running it in the terminal.

cd Downloads
sudo apt install ./vivaldi*.deb
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting 'vivaldi-stable' instead of './vivaldi-stable_4.1.2369.21-1_amd64.deb'
The following additional packages will be installed:
 fonts-liberation libu2f-udev
Recommended packages:
 adobe-flashplugin
The following NEW packages will be installed:
 fonts-liberation libu2f-udev vivaldi-stable
0 upgraded, 3 newly installed, 0 to remove and 10 not upgraded.
Need to get 834 kB/86.0 MB of archives.
After this operation, 295 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

So when the process is finished, you can run it from the main menu.

Uninstalling Vivaldi web browser on Debian 11

In case you want to uninstall Vivaldi from the system, you only have to run the following command

sudo apt remove vivaldi

This will permanently remove the package.

Conclusion

With Vivaldi, we will be able to have everything we want a modern web browser to be. And with the certainty of being secure and private, it adds an extra. It’s not perfect, we miss the fact that it’s not open source, but it’s still a worthwhile application.

Hello dear friends. Firefox and Google Chrome are the main dominators of the web browser market, but this does not mean that there are no other alternatives out there. And I think one of the most solid is Opera. So, in this post, you will learn how to install Opera on Debian 11. The process is very easy but it can be worth it.

Introducing to Opera Web Browser

What Opera always boasts about is being a modern web browser. This is because with Opera we can gain integration with social networks like Facebook and Instagram but also with Whatsapp.

Some of the main features of Opera are:

Integrated AdBlocker so that pages can load better.

Opera has a VPN that will help you to be anonymous on the Internet and improve your security.

Chat and surf at the same time with built-in messengers on the side of your browser.

The browser supports themes, keyboard shortcuts, and your favorite bookmarks from one place. Also, Opera features cross-device synchronization so you can use it from anywhere.

In addition to this, Opera is based on a browsing engine similar to Chrome, so the speed of loading websites is guaranteed.

So, let’s get started.

Install Opera Web Browser on Debian 11

Opera is not available from the official Debian repositories as it is not open-source software. But it is possible to install it with the package provided from the project website.

So, go to the Opera website.

1.- Opera web browser

Then, click on Download and it will automatically recognize the operating system and present the DEB package.

2.- Downloading Opera on Debian 11

Then, we can install it by opening the file browser and double-clicking on the downloaded file.

Also, we can do the process via the terminal which is faster. Open a terminal and access the folder where Opera has been downloaded which is usually
Downloads
.

cd Downloads

Now install Opera

sudo apt install ./opera*

This way it will install without problems. Also during the installation, you will be asked if you want to receive Opera updates along with the system. That is, you are asked if you want to add the Opera repository to the system. Answer Y.

Now run it from the main menu and it will start.

3.- Opera Web Browser running

So, enjoy it

Chromium is a fairly robust alternative to proprietary solutions such as Google Chome. But it is not far from the controversy since Ubuntu in its last LTS version decided not to package it as DEB but as Snap. So now you will learn how to install Chromium using Flatpak on many Linux distributions.

We already know that Flatpak is a fantastic technology and is widely used by many distributions like Debian, Linux Mint, OpenSUSE or Fedora. Therefore it is a very good installation method if you don’t use Linux Mint or if you don’t like Snap.

Briefly, what is Chromium?

Chromium is an open-source browser project that aims to build a safer, faster, and more stable way for all users to experience the web. In case you didn’t know, Chromium is the basis of the well-known Google Chrome and they share many features. They only differ in the support of proprietary multimedia files and small things more.

The problem came when Ubuntu 20.04 included Chromium in Snap format. This forced users to use Snap if they wanted Chromium.

Now, this has changed because the Linux Mint team has packaged Chromium in DEB form so it is now easier to do.

Let’s get started.

Install Chromium using Flatpak

One of the first things we have to do is make sure we have Flatpak in our system.

If you use Ubuntu 20.04 or Debian 10, run this command to install Flatpak

sudo apt install flatpak

For Ubuntu 18.04, add a repository to have a recent version of Flatpak:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexlarsson/flatpak
sudo apt update
sudo apt install flatpak

In the case of Fedora, you don’t have to do anything because Flatpak is already installed and configured by default in the distribution.

If you use OpenSUSE everything comes down to this command:

sudo zypper install flatpak

On the other hand, if your operating system is Arch Linux or one of its derivatives, you have to execute the following command:

sudo pacman -S flatpak

Now what I want to do is to add the Flathub repository which is the biggest Flatpak application repository there is.

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

And later, to carry out the installation with the following command:

flatpak install flathub org.chromium.Chromium

Then you can run it from the main menu or by executing this command:

flatpak run org.chromium.Chromium

1.- Chromium using Flatpak running

And voilà…

Conclusion

Google Chrome is the most popular browser out there but there is always an alternative to the giant and this is run by Firefox and Chromium. The latter is quite similar and in fact is the root of the project.

Hi, folks. In this post, you will learn how to install Microsoft Edge on Ubuntu 20.04 / Debian 10. It will be a short post but it can be useful to those who are newly on Linux. So, welcome.

In Linux, we have a lot of different web browsers. Of course, of all of them, Firefox is the most popular one because it is an Open Source software. But it is also increasingly common for other browsers to support Linux which we consumers like.

Well, recently Microsoft has released the first test version of Edge for Linux. This default web browser for Windows 10 comes to Linux to give some battle in the browsers.

Yes, it may not seem necessary, but in Ubuntu, many users come from Windows, which will facilitate the transition.

Before we start we want to point out that the software is in a very early stage of development. So we only recommend its use on a trial basis and never on a workstation.

Install Microsoft Edge on Ubuntu 20.04 / Debian 10

Microsoft Edge for Linux is available as an Alpha so you can download the package from the Dev Channel section.

To download it, go to this link.

And download the DEB package for Ubuntu and Debian.

1.- Download Microsoft Edge on Ubuntu / Debian

Now you have to read and accept the license terms of this Microsoft software for Linux

2.- Install Microsoft Edge on Ubuntu / Debian

Upon acceptance, the download will begin.

To install it, you can open your file browser and double click on the DEB package installed.

1.- The Microsoft edge package

Another way to install it is to use the terminal, which is a little faster.

Open a terminal and access the folder where the package is downloaded. The default is Downloads.

cd Downloads/
sudo apt install ./microsoft-edge-dev_88.0.680.1-1_amd64.deb

And then you can run it from the main menu just like any other application.

2.- Microsoft Edge

Now you can use Microsoft Edge on Ubuntu or Debian

3.- Microsoft Edge on Ubuntu / Debian

So, enjoy it.

Conclusion

Microsoft Edge has come to Linux to give us one more alternative. It seems that it is not so necessary but always more alternatives is better for all users. Thanks to this post you have learned how to do the installation.

There are many web browsers available for Linux. From the most popular to the most unknown. Well, in this tutorial you will learn how to install Google Chrome on Fedora 31.

As we know Fedora 31 has recently come out and includes Firefox by default as most Linux distributions. However, there are still those who prefer to use Google Chrome. One cause could be the excellent integration with their mobile version of Android or simply because of the wide variety of extensions available. In any case, we are talking about one of the most important web browsers out there and one of the best. Of that there is no doubt.

Install Google Chrome on Fedora 31

Like almost all programs that are not open source, Google Chrome is not found in the official repositories of the distribution. However, Google provides compiled packages ready to be installed.

First of all, go to the Google Chrome website

1.- Google Chrome website

Then click on Download Chrome.

In the next screen, we will have to choose the second option that corresponds to the RPM package for Fedora and OpenSuse.

2.- Download google chrome for Fedora

Once the package has been downloaded, we proceed to install it. I recommend doing it from the terminal to make the process faster.

So, open the terminal and navigate to the Download folder.

:~$ cd Downloads/

To make the installation faster, I will rename the downloaded package to google.rpm.

:~$ mv google-chrome-stable_current_x86_64.rpm google.rpm

And we proceed to perform the installation with the command dnf.

:~$ sudo dnf install google.rpm

3.- Installing Google Chrome on Fedora 31

Now you can launch it from the main menu:

4.- Google Chrome on Fedora 31

And that is it.

Conclusion

Google Chrome has gained its popularity step by step. This makes many users want to use it in Fedora 31. So in this post you have learned how to install it.

Nowadays, there are a lot of web browsers. Most of them are cross-platform which makes them available for Linux. However, in Linux, it seems that the majority prefers Firefox, but always place for the exploration of alternatives for certain cases. We must bear in mind that the web plays a determining role in today’s society. For example, many applications are developed with the aim of being on the Internet. Or even, leisure activities such as enjoying multimedia services are done from the web browser. So knowing alternatives is never too much. So in this post, I will show you how to install Vivaldi on Fedora 30.

Vivaldi is a cross-platform web browser focused on performance and innovation. It is relatively new compared to veterans like Firefox, Google Chrome or Opera, but thanks to its speed and innovation have earned a place in many Linux users. Precisely thanks to its innovation that I like very much, for example, has been one of the first to support Razer Chroma.

So, let us start to install Vivaldi on Fedora 30.

Install Vivaldi on Fedora 30

The first thing we should do is visit Vivaldi’s website. It’s very nice and quite intuitive.

1.- Vivaldi web site

On the site, you will also find downloads for other operating systems. But, Download the RPM package.

2.- Download Vivaldi web browser

Then wait for the file to download. It should not take long.

After that, open a terminal to install it. We will use
dnf
which is Fedora 30’s package manager. This is so that in case the package requires dependencies, dnf manages them automatically. This makes the process much easier.

:~$ sudo dnf install [file_path]

3.- Install Vivaldi on Fedora 30

Then, you can launch the application from the main menu. As you can see in the image, dnf managed some dependencies that Vivaldi needed.

4.- Vivaldi on Fedora 30

So, enjoy Vivaldi.

Ubuntu is, by far, one of the most popular Linux distros of all time because of its simplicity and user-friendly environment. Because of the features, there are also a number of Ubuntu derivatives in the world of Linux distros. Now, for any system, a web browser is a must. That’s because without the browser, there’s actually no way to enjoy the internet facility to the full extent. Even admins require a browser for performing admin tasks via the web UI.

The browsers

Today, let’s take a look at some of the best browsers for Ubuntu and Ubuntu-derivatives.

Google Chrome

In terms of the best browser, Google Chrome is still one of the top. In fact, Google Chrome dominates the internet browser market (according to GlobalStats). Of course, Chrome is a bit resource hungry and no one’s denying it. However, it also provides the best possible user experience of all the browsers in the market.

Get Google Chrome. Google officially provides DEB package for Ubuntu and similar systems.

Firefox

If there’s any browser that fights with Chrome hand-to-hand, then it’s definitely Firefox. Developed and maintained by Mozilla, Firefox is open-source and the prime choice of all the Linux distros as it offers more flexible licensing and others.

If your system is Ubuntu or Ubuntu-based, then there’s a very high chance that your system comes up with Firefox pre-installed. Just run the following command to make sure that all the software along with your Firefox browser is up-to-date.

Is Firefox not installed in your system right now? Get it right away!

Opera

This is a Chrome-based browser that also offers the seamless performance and features of Google Chrome. Opera is also quite secure and fast enough to compete in the market. The interface is actually pretty stylish as well.

We also covered up installing Opera on a Linux system.

Brave

This is another awesome browser that earned its fame for its ad blocking and tracking protection. Brave is also a Chromium-based browser developed by Brave Software Inc. It utilizes the Blink engine like Opera for providing smooth and finest performance in browsing.

Brave also has other interesting features like auto enabling HTTPS on site connections. This is very important as HTTP is no longer secure anymore.

Min Web Browser

If you’re looking for a lightweight web browser, then Min is your right choice. Despite Min a minimal browser, there’s no lack in the list of features. The browser generally goes with DuckDuckGo as the default search engine. However, you’re free to switch to other search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo etc.

Vivaldi

Vivaldi is another nice browser that is developed and maintained by Vivaldi Technologies. This is a free, cross-platform browser that targets the heavy internet using people. The browser adopted some really cool and popular features from the old Opera 12 – a browser that depended on Presto layout engine. In fact, you can also tell Vivaldi as the MODERN edition of the OLD Opera.

It’s also pretty flexible and offers you full customization over its skins and other layouts.

Enjoy!

Recently, Microsoft released their Windows 10 Insider Preview (build 17263) for “Skip Ahead” users. If you didn’t know, Insider Preview is the future of Windows 10 where features get added and users get chance to use and improve them by contributing their testing. It’s also a great platform for devs to create Windows Apps with advanced features. The latest release introduced a brand new system that enforces users to go with Edge browser.

Since Microsoft released their Edge browser after going a long path with Internet Explorer, they’ve been trying to popularize it with users. Microsoft even introduced a separate link in the Windows Store for the Edge browser extensions. This isn’t all; a new change will definitely put users into a great discomfort.

The new “Edge” law

When using the default Windows Mail app, if you click any link, it would previously open the default web browser. By default, it’s safe to assume that your default browser is not Edge. But in the newest release, the clicked links will open through Edge browser.

Obviously, if you previously used Internet Explorer, you’ll notice remarkable changes in Edge browser. It’s improved and powerful. But that doesn’t mean that it’s compulsory for everyone, right? Microsoft always tries to push their products on their customers, this is nothing new.

Fortunately, this feature is only available in the Insider Preview build of Windows 10. As users try it out, they’ll provide their feedback on the Feedback Hub. Hopefully, Microsoft will change this feature in the future. If you’re interested to get access to Insider Preview builds and check out the latest features, get Windows 10 Insider Preview.

If you want to switch from Windows to Linux, it’s the best to check out some of the awesome Linux distributions of 2018.
