In the case of Bitcoin wallets, there are lots of available options for all the platforms. However, Linux users face the greatest disadvantage as most of the wallet apps are available as source code. Users have to compile and install it in their system on their own. That’s a significant disadvantage for average day-to-day users with little or no knowledge of advanced usage of Linux commands and other features.

Thankfully, there are several Bitcoin wallets available for the Linux platform that come up pre-compiled for users. Bither is one of those and really easy to install. However, Bither installation did require a few command lines and care to enjoy the native Bitcoin wallet.

Today, we’ll be checking out the awesome Bitcoin wallet – Green Address. It doesn’t require any special knowledge or advanced command line works. In fact, this wallet is just a browser add-on (for Chrome/Chromium).

Green Address on Chrome

For enjoying this awesome Bitcoin wallet, you have to have Google Chrome on your system. It’s really easy to install the browser. It’s one of the most popular web browsers of the modern internet. However, it’s only available in 64-bit format and on major distros only. For other distros, you can find out a community managed package for your distro or you have to get Chromium, the open-source and community-managed version of Chrome.

Note that the same action is also possible to perform with the Vivaldi browser as it’s a spin-off of Google Chrome. However, I don’t recommend using that as it may cause issues. However, try at your own risk if you want.

After installing Google Chrome, it’s time to install and enjoy Green Address.

Install Green Address

Get Green Address on Chrome Web Store. Note that it’s an app that runs almost like a native app on Google Chrome.

Bitcoin is one of the most popular cryptocurrencies all over the world. In fact, it’s the most widely used cryptocurrency and the very first of its kind. Managing your Bitcoin account securely and easily is possible via Bitcoin wallets. These are programs that allow the users to directly interact with his/her account and manage funds in a safe method. However, Linux users find it difficult to enjoy a suitable Bitcoin wallet.

Most of the available wallets on Linux are available as source code and users have to compile the code into a usable piece of software. It’s totally understandable for this system, but it also deprives most of the users enjoying a suitable Bitcoin wallet on Linux.

If you’re one of those unfortunate ones, it’s your lucky day. Time to install the easiest Bitcoin wallet on your system – Bither.

Download Bither

Bither is available on lots of different platforms – Android, iOS, Linux, Windows etc. Head to the official site of Bither and download the Linux package. It’s only available for 64-bit Linux distros, but it’s highly unlikely that in the present day, anyone is running 32-bit Linux system unless the computer is REALLY old.

Installing Bither

Now, run these codes for installing Bither in your system. I’ve downloaded the software at “~/Downloads” folder.

cd ~/Downloads
tar -xf Bither-linux64.tar

Cryptocurrency is one of the most valuable resources in the current age of technology. It’s a system of virtual currency that holds very high exchange rate compared to the real world money. Bitcoin Gold is one of the cryptocurrency types. Recently, an anonymous hacker has mounted several “double spend” attacks on the Bitcoin Gold infrastructure.

The Bitcoin Gold attack

According to this post of Bitcoin Gold forum, the attack started on May 18. The hacker has successfully managed to amass over $18 million worth of BTG coins.

The hacker used a very popular concept of the weakness of cryptocurrency system – 51% attack. The attacker deployed a large of servers for taking over more than half of the hash rate of Bitcoin Gold. Thus, the hacker was able to modify the blockchain transaction details and perform the “double attack”. As the name suggests, the hacker was able to spend the same BTG twice.

Hacker targets exchanges

This combo of 51% attack and double-spend successfully fooled cryptocurrency exchange services, according to the team of Bitcoin Gold.

The team also explained the behavior. The cost for performing this type of attack is really high. That’s why for profit, the hacker had to get some high-value money really fast from the fake deposit. For the last few days, the hacker is adding more and more coin into the system and depositing those into his own bitcoin wallet.

By the time the blockchain identified the transactions was tempered, the hacker already withdrew his money from the exchange and double the original fund.

For countering this attack, exchanges raised the requirement of minimum threshold for confirming a BTG transaction, but the hacker is deploying more and more mining power for overtaking the network and carry out the attack continuously.

$18 million in hacker’s account

Bitcoin Gold team was able to identify the stock of stolen funds from exchanges to a BTG address – GTNjvCGssb2rbLnDV1xxsHmunQdvXnY2Ft. According to the screenshot, it received total 388,201.92404001 BTG.

The other users of Bitcoin Gold are safe as the hacker isn’t stealing from the users’ accounts. Instead, he’s stealing from exchanges. The attack is still very dangerous as it may destabilize the backup fund of an exchange or lead to its insolvency. Such condition would prohibit other users from cashing their cryptocurrency.

If the attack continues, some exchanges will go bankrupt and won’t be able to refund users.

Hacker attacked Bitcoin before

According to one exchange portals that worked with Bitcoin Gold team for solving the problem, believes that the hacker(s) also tried the same type of attack on Bitcoin in the past. In the present market state, Bitcoin Gold is very popular. It was created by forking the original Bitcoin in November 2017.

Aside from the attack on the exchanges, hackers also try to steal your processor power and mine cryptocurrency for them. Learn how to stay safe from unwanted crypto mining on your system.

Bitcoin – we all are familiar with this name. It’s so popular that it has become a synonym of cryptocurrency. Bitcoin was the first and now, the biggest in the market. Although there are many conspiracies and controversies whether Bitcoin is good or bad, it’s gaining more and more popularity. Bitcoin is supposed to be pretty safe in security. Unfortunately, in the past week, Bitcoin saw the biggest hack in its history – almost $60 million worth of Bitcoin stolen. The money was hacked from NiceHash, a Slovenian-based cryptocurrency (mostly Bitcoin) mining company.

What is NiceHash?

NiceHash is a company that allows users to buy “hashing power” – computers to mine more and more Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. If you don’t know what mining is, it’s the process of verifying Bitcoin transactions and adding to the public ledger. This process also adds more Bitcoin to the system. From the profit, users get rewards Bitcoin added to their account.

The effect of the incident

This incident has divided the NiceHash cryptocurrency community into 2 groups – one blaming the company for their competence and another deciding to stick with NiceHash. According to Will M. by the Reddit username bitbug42, had about 1.2 BTC (~ $20,000) on his account. He said, “It’s like if a human forgot to close the vault’s door, I blame the human error, not the lock machinery”.

The attack was highly professional with sophisticated social engineering, confirmed by NiceHash. NiceHash is investigating the situation and will release updates accordingly. Reddit users noted on a specific wallet that contains more than $60m on its account and most people suspects the account as the thief. The account is publicly available to view.

Another major incident that took place is a flaw in the Parity Technologies wallet system. A novice hacker accidentally (intentionally, maybe?) deleted a library from the code that was necessary to access the money stored in the digital wallet. Due to the situation, a good number of accounts got frozen, having around $150 million in the account. To unfreeze the account, work is still in progress. Specialists are suggesting a hard fork for the ledger. This would restore the ledger with the previous code, the only possible way now for unfreezing the account.

This is only some of the major attacks upcoming in the future. As Bitcoin is the most successful cryptocurrency and its price is becoming higher and higher, it’s time to take action to protect yourself against any security threat.

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, meaning that it isn’t literally possible to hack and transfer all the money. Instead, hacking the clients’ devices is a lot easier, with the newest discoveries of unforgivable security holes in systems.

What to do now

1. Use a unique email to your digital wallet for cryptocurrency exchange.

2. Assign a really strong & long password that none can access. Longer passwords will take more time for hackers to break down.

3. Enable maximum protection in your mobile device. It’s better not to use text messages as a 2-factor authentication.

4. Try to buy cryptocurrencies across multiple exchanges.

5. Keep your cryptocurrency offline. For example, you can buy a hardware wallet that’s designed specifically for creating transactions.

6. For exchanging Etherium, try to look into decentralized exchanges.

Above all, stay alert of any type of suspicious activities. Cryptocurrencies, for their limited supply, is highly valuable and the value is increasing day by day. The value is highly volatile as well, meaning that it fluctuates a lot. In order to secure your money, keep your devices and yourself secured and that’s the only way now.
