Hi! Enjoying HDR in games is nothing new. In fact, this technology came with consoles like PS4 and Xbox One. That is, devices that came out in 2013. Additionally, the Xbox series has Auto HDR. However, Windows 10 does not yet have this feature. This Auto HDR function allows you to enjoy HDR in games that only have SDR. Something that obviously improves the look of the games. Therefore, this feature is very much missed in Windows 10. But don’t worry, the wait is almost over. Various reports indicate that the arrival of this feature in Windows 10 will be imminent. In the following lines we will see that HDR in games will soon be a reality in Windows 10.

HDR feature in games now available for Insider users

In fact, this function is now available for insider users. Therefore, it is expected to be available to everyone in the near future. Obviously, a game using DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 APIs is required. In addition, Microsoft announces a catalog of more than 1000 compatible games. Below, we show you what a title looks like using HDR technology. Specifically the game Gears of War 5.

This HDR implementation is basically the same as the one used in the Xbox Series. This allows you to enjoy HDR in games no matter if they are not developed with this technology. Of course, as long as they are based on DirectX 11 or DirectX 12. In order to use Auto HDR, an HDR-compatible monitor is required. In addition, it is necessary to activate it from Windows Settings. Specifically from the Windows 10 display settings. Then go to the Windows HD color settings. First you must activate the HDR mode. Then you will see an option to enable Auto HDR. See what the upcoming configuration will look like.

On the other hand, Microsoft announces a developer mode to run games in split screen. This allows you to see the difference between SDR and Auto-HDR mode. However, it is a complex configuration that involves modifying the Windows registry. Therefore, we leave it up to you to implement it. See the Microsoft blog for more information. Well, you already know that HDR in games will soon be a reality in Windows 10. In addition, it is very likely that this function will arrive with Windows 10 Sun Valley. See you soon!
