India, the place of knowledge and wisdom, and I belong to India. While exploring some decent Linux flavors, get to know about Garuda. Yes, I can claim that the distro is the world’s most beautiful Linux version. It was surprising for me to know that Garuda belongs to India. Why I was not aware of that? anyway, I decided to download it and see what is so special about it. I got stunned after seeing that beautiful piece of art. Garuda is an Indian Hindu mythological bird, which belongs to Lord Vishnu the creature of this universe.

Installation and Features

Download Garuda OS from this link. Here, I have used Virtual environment for demonstration purpose.

Boot distro. As per official recommendations you must have at least 30 G of storage and 4 G of RAM. Click to install.

EndeavourOS is an Arch-based Linux distribution, to become the spiritual successor of Antergos. In addition, the first version of EndeavourOS announced in the summer of 2019; however, despite being a recent distribution, in a very short time, it has gained the trust of many users. On the other hand, the developers have released EndeavourOS 2020.09.20, which incorporates the kernel update.

When it comes to Linux, most users are more familiar with the most popular distributions. As it would be the case of Ubuntu, which is one of the main distributions.

On the other hand, Arch is developed to use the full potential of Linux. Arch is completely based on free software, incorporating a “rolling release” model. In addition to pursuing the famous KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid!), the aim is for each user to adapt the distro to their needs.

On the other hand, EndeavourOS offers us the experiences of Arch in a simpler way, from the graphical interface, so that any user can use it.

Now, EndeavourOS 2020.09.20 brings the 5.8.10 Kernel update, in addition to the improved welcome screens in the initial section for the first time.

EndeavourOS 2020.09.20: What’s New

The new version presents a great novelty because it began with the formation of compilations of the distribution. For several boards based on processors with ARM architecture.

The compilations are based on Arch Linux ARM and are tested on Odroid N2, Odroid N2+, Odroid XU4, and Raspberry PI 4b boards.

On the other hand, the welcome capacity that it gives to the user when entering the system has increased significantly. In the following way:

Support for Chinese translations.

New button to change screen resolutions: only available in the Live environment.

The mirror update button: now sends a proof for the installed reflectors.

An ARM button link from Archlinux.

Various error corrections.

A new button to select one of our wallpaper.

Two link buttons that take the user to the Arch repository page or the AUR page to search for packages.

For more information see the official announcement

Conclusion

Many advanced users of Linux rarely use application menus. I have spoke with people in the IT industry that literally do everything inside a terminal console, never leaving the safety of their console environment throughout the duration of an entire workday.

So very rarely used are application menus, many users are actually removing them from their desktop environment, completely, and devising much more productive ways to get things done without dribbling around in infinite menus. Removing the application menu doesn’t remove access to your applications as they are still all installed on your system. It just means that you’re not wasting valuable desktop real estate on a tool that serves minimal, or no, purpose to you.

Today, I show you how to remove your application menu and replace it with something which is much faster, much more useful and which stays out of the way until its triggered by its associated hotkey – Albert.

Removing your application menu

Before I proceed to install Albert, I will remove the application menu. I am using Arch Linux and the MATE desktop environment.

Removing the MATE application menu is as simple as right-clicking on the menu attached to the MATE panel and selecting “Remove from panel”.

The application menu has now been removed.

Installing Albert

Now, I need to install Albert. To do this in Arch Linux, simply enter the following command into the terminal console:

> sudo pacman -S albert

Albert will now proceed to install.

Post-installation clean-up

Once Albert has been installed, there are a couple of quick tasks that need to be completed to polish off the installation and ensure Albert starts at system boot.

First, I need to initiate Albert and set a hotkey.

Launch Albert using the application launcher by using the key combination of “ALT+F2”. Now, enter “albert” then click “Run” to launch Albert.

I need to read and confirm all of the contents presented in the initial dialog boxes until I reach the main program window.

Under the “General” tab, I will set the preferred hotkey which will be used to launch Albert.

It is preferred to set a hotkey that is not used often for any other purposes. Personally, I find the tilde “~” key pretty useless most of the time, therefore I choose it to set as my hotkey to launch Albert.

You can set your preferences to your own liking, but I recommend enabling “Show tray icon” so you know Albert is actually running in the background.

Under the “Extensions” tab, enable “Applications”.

As you can see from the list of extensions Albert has the potential to be so much more than just an application launcher. But I prefer to keep things simple and limit its usage to a launcher only. But once you’re familiar with how Albert functions, feel free to experiment with other extensions. Get creative!

The final step in the post-installation clean-up is to add Albert to the system startup configuration. In fact, to get to that I can now test out Albert!

I simply hit the hotkey and Albert should be triggered.

Enter the term “startup”. Press “ENTER” on “Startup Applications”. Now click the “Add” button and I can now add a new item into the auto-start configuration using the following credentials:

Name: albert launcher
Command: albert
Comment: albert

I will save the changes by closing the Startup Applications window. Now when anyone logs into the Linux desktop Albert will automatically load into the background and will be ready to be launched when the preset hotkey is pressed.

You might have previously noticed there is an option to select auto-start at system startup in Albert’s own program options. I have previously tested this and found its behavior to be erratic and very unreliable. Therefore, the best workaround is to add your own auto-start entry into the desktop environment’s own auto-start configuration, which has proven to be much more reliable.

I have successfully replaced the application menu with Albert application launcher, leaving the system with much better aesthetics and a much faster and more powerful tool to launch applications.

For those of us who are passionate about the Linux world, it’s not nice to have to give this kind of news. And it is that Antergos the great Linux distribution based on Arch Linux finishes its development and will no longer be supported. So, Antergos says goodbye.

Antergos says goodbye

The Antergos development team has announced in an emotive post that it will not continue to develop the distribution. So, it is a big loss for everyone on Linux because Antergos was a quick, easy and safe way to enjoy Arch Linux. We could say that Antergos was to Arch Linux what Ubuntu was at the time for Debian. On this, it is worth quoting the article:

“Our goal was to make Arch Linux available to a wider audience of users by providing a streamlined, user friendly experience including a safe place for users to communicate, learn, and help one another”

In fact, I am sure they have accomplished the goal. Antergos has earned a special place in many Linux users. It was the best way to enjoy the full potential of Arch Linux without any problems. Even for people not so expert at that.

Cause? Not enough free time

Yes, this has been the main cause. It’s just that “what started out as a project” has matured so much that it takes a lot of free time to maintain it. The development team had less and less time and they preferred to say no more.

“we no longer have enough free time to properly maintain Antergos. We came to this decision because we believe that continuing to neglect the project would be a huge disservice to the community.”

So anyone who wants to can use even parts of the project to push others. In addition to this, the development team reports that the wiki and forum will continue to operate for at least three more months.

I use Antergos, now what?

If you are using Antergos you should not worry, because you will continue to receive updates directly from Arch Linux.

On the other hand, soon there will be a new update where the project repositories will be removed. In addition to this, project packages that no longer serve the distribution will be uninstalled.

Finally, the team thanks everyone who has collaborated with the project in one way or another. They indicate that this trip has been beneficial for them from a personal and professional point of view.

However, I think it is we who should be grateful to them. So Antergos says goodbye…

On Arch Linux, there are a number of ways for getting all the popular and useful software directly on your system. By default, the package manager “Pacman” is restricted towards the official Arch Linux repository.

However, by default, the official Arch repository wasn’t meant to hold all the additional software you need. For that reason, there are other repositories like the AUR – a really powerful part of the Arch ecosystem. This repository allows community-developed packages to be installed in the easiest possible manner.

For installing a software from the AUR repository, there are 2 ways – building from source and using 3rd-party tools like Yaourt and Pacaur etc. Check out on enjoying Yaourt on your Arch system. Yaourt is getting older and obsolete, so why not switch towards a new one?

This particular AUR helper targets the “advanced” users. It’s specially designed for minimizing the user interactions. If you’re interested in Pacaur, make sure that you know on how the AUR software are installed in the classical manner (grabbing the source, building manually with “makepkg” etc.).

Pacaur

Pacaur is a great alternative to Yaourt. It’s another AUR (Arch User Repository) helper that aims performance and speed while minimizing the user interactions. The best part is, Pacaur uses a very minimalistic, uncluttered interface while packing powerful punches (secured RPC interface for solving dependency tree etc.).

Using “pacaur”, you can also search for any package name.

Let’s get started.

Installing Pacaur

Note – my system is by beloved Manjaro Linux – an exceptionally good quality distro that’s based on the Arch. Learn more on Manjaro Linux.

Pacaur is an AUR helper, so where else to go except AUR for grabbing it?

Make sure that your system has “git” –

sudo pacman -S git

Then, it’s time to grab the source code of “pacaur”.

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/pacaur.git

Download complete? Hurry up and start the building process!

cd pacaur/

makepkg -si

Voila! The installation is complete!

Pacaur usage

Pacaur follows the command structure quite similar to the “pacman”.

You can easily check whether all your packages are up-to-date –

pacaur -Syyuu

Let’s start with installing a package from the AUR repository.

pacaur -S <package_name>

Pacaur will prompt for user interaction – whether you wish to edit the installation files or confirmation etc. Let’s just add a couple more flags on the command structure –

pacaur -S --noedit --noconfirm <package_name>

Does the Pacaur log output in the terminal bother you? You can easily disable the annoyance with the “–silent” flag.

pacaur -S <package_name> --silent

THere are a lot of additional commands and features of Pacaur that you can start exploring right away! Check out Pacaur on GitHub.

On Arch Linux, there are a number of apps you have to get from the “community” repo. Yaourt (Yet Another User Repository Tool) is such an advanced CLI tool for installing software packages from the AUR repository.

AUR (Arch Linux User Repository) is a place where hundreds of software packages are located. It can search, install and upgrade the packages installed from AUR interactively. You can also directly build and install packages from the AUR or ABS source.

Yaourt is such a powerful tool, yet it doesn’t come up pre-installed on Arch and any Arch-based distro. We have to get the source from AUR repository and build it by ourselves. Let’s get started.

Getting Yaourt

Make sure that your system is ready with the following prerequisites –

sudo pacman -S --needed base-devel git wget yajl

Change active directory –

cd /tmp

Grab and install “package-query” –

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/package-query.git

cd package-query/

makepkg -si && cd /tmp/

Now, your system is ready for grabbing and building Yaourt. Run the following commands –

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/yaourt.git

For developers, having the suitable IDE is extremely necessary for the maximum output. In fact, a good IDE can dramatically reduce the strain on a programmer with various helping tools at disposal.

If you’re a developer, you may have already heard the name of Eclipse, right? Eclipse is an open-source, community-driven project that aims for delivering a universal development platform. The IDE is also widely popular for its cross-platform support.

Eclipse is widely used for Java programming. The IDE itself is mostly written in Java. However, over time, it now has the capability of supporting other popular programming languages like Java, C/C++, Python, and Perl.

Today, we’ll be enjoying Eclipse IDE on the majestic Arch Linux. Truth be told, I’ll be using Manjaro Linux – a refined, Arch-based Linux distro that offers a pretty good looking environment with numerous tweaks to make Arch more easily accessible to new to advanced Linux users.

Installing Eclipse IDE

Eclipse is available in 2 forms – from the default repository and snap package.

Installing Eclipse from software repo

Get the installation package of Eclipse –

# Eclipse Java

sudo pacman -S eclipse-java

# Eclipse JEE

sudo pacman -S eclipse-jee

# Eclipse CPP

sudo pacman -S eclipse-cpp

# Eclipse JavaScript

sudo pacman -S eclipse-javascript

# Eclipse PHP

sudo pacman -S eclipse-php

Note that if you install one version of Eclipse, then installing any other version will cause conflicts within the system. For enabling support for other languages, you have to use the respective plugin.

Installing Eclipse from snap

For installing any snap package, the system must have the snap client. In the case of Arch and other Arch-based distros, snap client isn’t available on the default software repository. We have to grab its source from AUR, compile and install first.

Make sure that your system has “git” installed –

sudo pacman -S git

Now, grab the source of snap client –

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/snapd.git

Start the building and installation process –

If you’re a Linux user, you obviously heard the name of Arch Linux. Arch Linux is an elite Linux with fairly difficult usage methods. Unlike Ubuntu/Debian, you’ll find Arch more challenging. That’s why it’s not suitable for beginners. But thanks to the support of the community, Arch Linux is being packed in a user-friendly distro – Antergos.

Antergos is really simplistic and easier than the classic Arch Linux. For any beginner, Arch Linux was a big no-no. Now, Antergos is one of the top choices for the Linux beginners! Although there is some difficulty in here, that’s not an issue at all with the polished graphics and user-friendly look.

Today, let’s install Antergos. BACKUP all your important files first! I’ll be using the current stable version “antergos-18.4-x86_64.iso”. The installation steps are quite similar to any other version, so don’t worry.

Bootable installation media

At first, you need to have a bootable installation media. First, download the Antergos Live ISO. Don’t forget to check the checksum of the ISO file because any single data corruption can lead to major issues.

Once verified, either burn the ISO to a CD/DVD or make a bootable USB flash drive. Then, connect the media to your device and boot into it.

Select “Start Antergos Live”. It’ll take some time to load the live OS.

Now, you’re on the live screen. Feel free to explore the OS. When you’re prepared, click on the “Cnchi” icon from the left bar.

Click on “Install It”.

There are many Linux distros all around the internet. Most definitely, Arch Linux has always been one of the hardest ones to use, even for mediocre users. For making Arch a popular choice like Debian, the community is working hard to make it easier. In this attempt, Namib Linux has made Arch a lot easier.

Namib Linux is a Linux distro based on the Arch Linux. It’s relatively new to the distro world, with the latest release (v17.11) in the last year. However, this has already proved its worth by compensating the delay with blazing performance and simpler system. Get Namib Linux now!

Namib Linux is developed and maintained by Meerkat Software based in Tokelau, New Zealand. This distro is currently available in two languages – English and French. More locale is supported, but you have to add them manually through the “Namib Settings Manager”.

Namib Locale Manager

Features

The features of Namib Linux are numerous. Here’re some of the core and important features.

Rolling Update – Rolling update was never a widespread practice for Linux distros. However, Namib Linux follows rolling updates, ensuring that the system is always up-to-date without re-installing the complete operating system. This saves up a lot of time and effort for everyone.

Interface – Namib Linux comes up with a very simple user interface. It’s highly customizable, flexible and of course, user-friendly. It doesn’t matter whether you’re new to Linux or an experienced user, you’ll never feel like a fish out of water. Namib Linux uses MATE desktop environment, pretty similar to Windows 7 interface.

Installation – Arch Linux has always been one of the notorious distros for the installation process. Even mediocre users would become puzzled while installation. However, Namib Linux has simply transformed the entire process. With soothing GUI and easy-to-understand instructions, it has removed the stress for good. The installation is optimized for newbies. Take a look at the two different screenshots of original Arch Linux and Namib Linux.

Arch Linux Installation Screen

Namib Linux Installation Screen

Performance – Namib Linux gets the most out of the hardware to ensure the best possible performance. The ISO is ~1.5GB, somewhat lightweight, to be honest. However, like any other Linux distro, it consumes very less hardware resource and runs smooth. It’s highly flexible & resource efficient.

Software – Arch Linux is generally designed to provide the core only; users have to install each and every other software manually. But Namib Linux changes this approach. It comes up with a good collection of built-in programs to make your life easier. It includes LibreOffice suite, GIMP, Eye of MATE Image Viewer etc.

Compatibility – Hardware is a big issue when your PC is obsolete. Namib Linux comes up with a very good collection of hardware drivers, ensuring the most portability. You can even create a live USB and use it on any hardware!

Why use Arch?

It’s a good question and many Linux users (including me) ask this. Arch Linux is from a better Linux OS family line. Unfortunately, due to its rough and tough environment, it didn’t gain much popularity. However, Arch is getting more and more user-friendly and available for every type of users, thanks to the efforts of the community.

Namib Linux definitely eases Arch’s complexity. With default software and other tweaks, it’s not so distinguishable than any other Linux distro. If you’re an Arch fan or willing to try Arch for a while, take a look at Namib Linux. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Arch is trying to reach more people, and there’s another nice Arch-based distro – Anarchy Linux. Have a look at Anarchy Linux.

Arch Linux is one of the mainstream Linux distros of the world. To make it widely popular among the community, Arch Anywhere was launched. Arch Anywhere was a distribution that got down from the crown when there was a trademark infringement. Now, it’s completely rebranded to Anarchy Linux. If you’ve been an Arch user or looking for having the best Arch Linux experience, Anarchy Linux is the best choice.

This distro is exceptional what it sets out and what it achieves. If you had the fear of Arch Linux, put your fear aside and get a grab on the Anarchy Linux. It’s a bitter truth that Arch Linux isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s very scary for new Linux users, even to some intermediate users. The installation of it alone is scary enough. Here, distros like Anarchy come in to help out general users with a user-friendly environment.

Installation

The installation process of Arch Linux is very challenging. However, Anarchy isn’t that much of a difficulty, but not an easy one either. Comparing to other mainstream Linux distros like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, openSUSE etc., Anarchy Linux installation takes a good focus and understanding.

The default installer uses the Xfce4 graphical interface but doesn’t make thing easy for others. You have to have an experience and understanding to go through the text-based installer. For example, the very first step of installer asks you to update the list of mirror servers. Many experienced users will stumble a bit, let alone the newbies.

Let’s go a bit deeper. Select “Download & Rank New Mirrors”, tab down to “OK” and hit Enter. You can choose the nearest mirror to your location and it’s done. The next few screens are normal and simple (language, time zone, keyboard layout etc.).

The next part is overwhelming for many Arch users. Anarchy Linux comes up with an option to “Auto Partition Drive”.

Here, I’m choosing the “Auto Partition Drive” option. Next option will allow you to choose the drive to install the OS. If you have only one drive, it’s just a matter to hit Enter. Otherwise, select the drive, choose the file system (ext2/3/4, xfs, btrfs etc.), tab down to OK, hit Enter. Then, you can choose whether you want the SWAP space. If you want to have (recommended to have), specify the size (recommended 2GB minimum). The choice between GPT and MBR is available as well.

Installation types

Now, you’ll have to choose the desired installation of Anarchy Linux. 5 options are available here:

Anarchy-Desktop

Anarchy-Desktop-LTS

Anarchy-Server

Anarchy-Server-LTS

Anarchy-Advanced

The LTS stands for Long Term Support. If you’re a general user, use the Anarchy-Desktop (the default choice).

The installation will also guide to install various software packages to install. Don’t worry; if you miss anything, you can install it later.

There’re two desktop environments I like – GNOME and Budgie. Although the home interface doesn’t look so distinct, the “Apps” page surely looks different.

Here, GNOME is on the left and Budgie on the right.

Why use Arch Linux without the “Arch”?

It’s a nice question but revealing. Arch Linux, being optimized for an advanced user, promotes the feeling of “elitism”, like Gentoo. However, the complexity of Arch is below Gentoo. Anarchy Linux, making everything as simpler as possible, targets to reach more users. If you’re looking for something not that challenging, Anarchy is your right choice. It’s well-maintained, extremely stable and most of all, based on a highly regarded Linux arch.

If Anarchy doesn’t ring the bell of your heart, don’t worry. We have listed the best Linux distros of 2018. Choose what you love the most!
