Audiovisual content is now widely consumed by almost all users. In this sense, Linux was always seen as the system that had the least applications for this. However, everyday solid, reliable and elegant alternatives emerge to perform various jobs such as file conversion. That’s why in this post I will talk about MystiQ Video Converter on Linux.

MystiQ harnesses the full power of FFmpeg

MystiQ is a front-end for FFmpeg, that is, it is a powerful multimedia (audio and video) file converter. It supports many formats including the most popular ones like Avi, MKV, MP4, Mp3, and others.

Many features make it a very interesting application, but one of them is that it is made entirely with QT5. This guarantees elegance and integration, especially with the Plasma desktop environment.

So, MystiQ features an intuitive graphical interface and a rich set of presets to help you convert media files within a few clicks

On the other hand, MystiQ is available for many Linux distributions like Arch Linux, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora and OpenSUSE with precompiled packages. However, it also has a version for Windows and soon for macOS.

Main features of this Video Converter for Linux

Some of the main characteristics of this application are the following:

MystiQ has a clean and elegant graphic interface. This thanks to a careful design where the work and the non-distraction of the user are prioritized.

It is Open-source. The application is released under the GPL license which makes it quite flexible and with source code available.

Cross-platform. With versions for Windows and Linux, it can be installed in most of the current computers.

It supports a lot of multimedia formats. This will not be a limitation for the user.

MystiQ is translated into many languages so that it is even easier to use and can reach many different people.

So let’s install it.

Install MytiQ Video converter on Linux

From the application website, we have a section dedicated to facilitating the installation. We can access it from this link.

There you will find the packages and instructions for each of the supported distributions. However, we will also find a distributed version in AppImage.

Once you install it, when you run it you will see the following:

There are more and more applications available for Linux. It is a fact that the old fame that there are few applications in Linux remains more and more in the past. Recently, I have come across Graviton a simple and good text editor for Linux. Despite being in an early development phase, it has some interesting features. In this post, you will learn about this program, as well as install it on your favorite Linux distribution.

Meeting this text editor for Linux

Graviton-code-editor is a text editor for Linux that is built on the basis of Electron. It is quite simple, but promising features. This makes it a simple editor, elegant and very easy to install. Besides this, it is an opensource project released under the MIT license and is not only available for Linux but also for MacOS and Windows.

Some features of Graviton are:

The application supports themes. So, you can customize it and feel more comfortable with the editor.

Thanks to the plugin support, we will be able to extend the functionality of the editor. It is also possible to create your own plugins.

If we are working with multiple files, we can split the screen. Quite useful this feature.

You can use Zen Mode.

If you are a developer, you will also like that it has support for many programming languages. That is, it has syntax highlighting. Ideal for reviewing the specific source code.

Moreover, Graviton is translated into several of the world’s most popular languages. So, this is unlikely to be an obstacle.

However, the autocomplete works but is not entirely stable, but will be improved in future versions.

So, how to install it?

Graviton is available for Linux, in many formats for Ubuntu, Debian. However, we can also get it through AppImage or as a snap package.

Currently, version 1.0.1 is available, which is the latest version available. It is a beta, but it works quite well. So, you can go to the release page to download it.

If you choose the .DEB format, remember to install it later using the terminal.

:~$ sudo dpkg -i [file_path]

Or if you want to use snap.

:~$ sudo snap install graviton --beta

In my case, I will download the .AppImage.

When you run the program for the first time, you will be able to choose the language and theme. Then open a file and start working.

1.- Working with Graviton

A text editor for Linux.

And that’s it.

Conclusion

Graviton is a text editor for Linux, fast, simple and easy to install. It is at the very beginning of development, but it is already perfectly functional and stable. The only thing left to do is to promote these projects, which means that we have more and more variety in our system.

In this blog, we have emphasized the importance of team communications. Because we are in a globalized world where more and more projects are getting bigger and bigger. Also because thanks to the internet the participants are not physically in the same place. And this requires fluidity in private conversations. We commented all this when we taught you about Slack, now we have one more alternation. Therefore, today we will show you Zulip an excellent alternative to Slack for your team communications.

Zulip is an open source tool similar to Slack that allows group chats in a team. The main difference with Slack is that it is open source. Zulip is one of the fastest growing Open Source applications with many contributors to the projects. It is released under the Apache 2.0 license which guarantees that we can examine its source code. On the other hand, Zulip adds threaded and topical conversations within the conversation channels. This makes it even more efficient.

The main advantage of Zulip against Slack and other similar applications is that it takes advantage of the benefits of asynchronous communication. The program allows you to combine real-time chat with asynchronous communication. This is important because if at that moment, a member of the team is not online, he can read and track the messages easily. All this thanks to the fact that in Zulip each channel has a topic so each message has a specific objective. Topics hold Zulip conversations together, just like subject lines hold email conversations together

On the other hand, the application boasts a lot of integration since it can be integrated with more than 100 applications. Including the very popular Dropbox, Gmail, Google Calendar and many others.

Install Zulip an alternative to Slack

The Zulip client application is quite simple to download, it is offered for various systems such as Windows, MacOS and for Android and iOS mobile platforms. So to do it, it is necessary to write these commands in a terminal:

:~$ wget https://github.com/zulip/zulip-electron/releases/download/v2.3.82/Zulip-2.3.82-x86_64.AppImage

1.- Download and install Zolip an alternative to Slack

Next, set execute permissions to the file.

:~$ chmod +x Zulip-2.3.82-x86_64.AppImage

As we can see, we downloaded a .AppImage file. Just open the file browser and double click to open it.

2.- Running Zulip

So we can create a new organization and configure Zulip to our liking.

Conclusion

There are many applications today. The great advantage of this is that by categories we find several that favor competition and benefits users. Today Zulip e wants to show as a serious alternative to Slack adding improvements and new concepts.

I recommend you to visit the website of the project and get more details of the application.

In these times, the operating systems, are responsible for facilitating the process of installation of applications. To achieve this goal, the operating systems centralize the obtaining of the software in stores or repositories. However, in Linux, some of them present problems with dependency management. In order to solve these problems, alternatives such as Snap and Flatpak arose, however, today we will focus on AppImageHub, the Appimage store.

What is an AppImage?

Installing a package on Linux is very simple using the software manager. The problem lies in the dependencies of that package when it is updated. An example would be the following, imagine that an application in version 1 requires a library that is by default in Ubuntu. To install it would not be complicated, we would go to the manager of software and we installed it from there. But, the package in its version 2, requires a newer version of the library, how would we install it? the process is very hard.

To solve the previous inconvenience, the developers have used packaging tools where to incorporate all the dependencies in a single file. In short, in an AppImage file we will have everything we need to run this program.

Of course, it is a fairly simple definition of AppImage but serves to illustrate in a basic way its purpose.

A nice AppImage store

There are other stores for self-contained packages such as Snapcraft and Flathub, so the AppImage was missing. AppImageHub is a kind of store where all the applications that are distributed under that format are collected.

Its presentation is quite simple. It is organized in categories where you can find at least 650 applications ready to download and use without any problem.

On the other hand, the project is still starting and because of that, the search engine does not work, but we are sure it will.

You can browse the categories and find direct links to the projects. Very useful for discovering new or forgotten applications.

2.- An application on AppImageHub

In addition, AppimageHub encourages developers to publish their applications in AppImage format. For example, StarUML and Etcher are two great examples of this.

It is a small project maintained in GitHub which we thank for knowing and downloading applications for Linux.

So, enjoy it.

I honestly prefer to use Telegram than WhatsApp because it offers me many options. It also uses open protocols and there are many interesting options. However, I have to admit that WhatsApp is much more popular than Telegram especially in Latin America and part of Europe. The truth is that nothing prevents me from using both services, so if you use both, you may need Franz. Today, I will tell you about this great program that allows you to have several messaging accounts in a single application.

I must admit that Franz is one of my indispensable applications on my Linux desktop. It is a fantastic application that allows to have in one place many accounts of the most popular services such as Gmail, WhatsApp, Telegram, Google Keep, Slack and many others.

Franz website

Franz allows you to add each service many times. This makes it the perfect tool to manage multiple business and private accounts all at the same time.

Franz Features

there are many features that make it a benchmark for desktop communications. Some of its features are the following:

It is open source (Apache 2 Licence) , which means that you can examine its source code and detect errors.

Multiplatform. This guarantees that you can use it in many computers. There are versions for Windows, Linux and Mac.

Supports a lot of communication services. Most of them very popular worldwide.

It is available in many languages such as English, Spanish, Italian, French, Russian, Japanese and many more. It is very likely that you have the application in your language.

So, let’s install Franz.

Installing and using Franz on Linux

If you use Ubuntu or Debian there are two ways to get Franz on your computer. First, you can do this by downloading and installing the .DEB package. However, not everyone uses these Linux distributions. For them there is the appimage format.

The AppImage format is a kind of portable application for Linux. This greatly facilitates the distribution of applications on Linux. It does not require special execution permissions and even novices will feel comfortable with this format.

So you have to go to the download section and choose the AppImage option.

1.- Downloading Franz

Once the file is downloaded, assign it execution permission and open it by double clicking.

:~$ chmod +x file_name

2.- First screen

When you run it, you will see the image above. An advantage of Franz is that he allows you to have an account and in it you can add the services you need. If you don’t have one, you can create it for free, although there is a paid version.

Once you’re logged in, it’s a good idea to first review the options so you can configure it to your liking. Click File -> Settings.

One of the main advantages of using Franz on Linux is that you can take advantage of native notifications for your messages. In addition, you can use WhatsApp from the desktop, since there is no official Linux client.

Conclusion

Franz helps us to have many online ditches in one place. Being created with Electron makes it multiplatform and the way to get it is really simple.
