Antergos says goodbye

The Antergos development team has announced in an emotive post that it will not continue to develop the distribution. So, it is a big loss for everyone on Linux because Antergos was a quick, easy and safe way to enjoy Arch Linux. We could say that Antergos was to Arch Linux what Ubuntu was at the time for Debian. On this, it is worth quoting the article:

“Our goal was to make Arch Linux available to a wider audience of users by providing a streamlined, user friendly experience including a safe place for users to communicate, learn, and help one another”

In fact, I am sure they have accomplished the goal. Antergos has earned a special place in many Linux users. It was the best way to enjoy the full potential of Arch Linux without any problems. Even for people not so expert at that.

Cause? Not enough free time

Yes, this has been the main cause. It’s just that “what started out as a project” has matured so much that it takes a lot of free time to maintain it. The development team had less and less time and they preferred to say no more.

“we no longer have enough free time to properly maintain Antergos. We came to this decision because we believe that continuing to neglect the project would be a huge disservice to the community.”

So anyone who wants to can use even parts of the project to push others. In addition to this, the development team reports that the wiki and forum will continue to operate for at least three more months.

I use Antergos, now what?

If you are using Antergos you should not worry, because you will continue to receive updates directly from Arch Linux.

On the other hand, soon there will be a new update where the project repositories will be removed. In addition to this, project packages that no longer serve the distribution will be uninstalled.

Finally, the team thanks everyone who has collaborated with the project in one way or another. They indicate that this trip has been beneficial for them from a personal and professional point of view.

Antergos is really simplistic and easier than the classic Arch Linux. For any beginner, Arch Linux was a big no-no. Now, Antergos is one of the top choices for the Linux beginners! Although there is some difficulty in here, that’s not an issue at all with the polished graphics and user-friendly look.

Today, let’s install Antergos. BACKUP all your important files first! I’ll be using the current stable version “antergos-18.4-x86_64.iso”. The installation steps are quite similar to any other version, so don’t worry.

• Bootable installation media

At first, you need to have a bootable installation media. First, download the Antergos Live ISO. Don’t forget to check the checksum of the ISO file because any single data corruption can lead to major issues.

Once verified, either burn the ISO to a CD/DVD or make a bootable USB flash drive. Then, connect the media to your device and boot into it.

• Select “Start Antergos Live”. It’ll take some time to load the live OS.

• Now, you’re on the live screen. Feel free to explore the OS. When you’re prepared, click on the “Cnchi” icon from the left bar.

• Click on “Install It”.

• Select your language. By default, the language is “English”.

• You’ll see a system check window. It ensures that all your configuration is alright.

• Select the region you live in. It will help the system choose the proper locale. If your location isn’t listed, go with “English (US), United States” option.

• Now, choose the time zone.

• Your keyboard layout should be detected automatically. If not, select the right layout.

• Antergos supports up to 8 types of desktop environments. Choose your favorite one. I’m going to the KDE desktop.

• You’ll have a list of available additional features. You must turn “ON” AUR support, Bluetooth (if available), SSH Service, Printing support. However, you’re free to choose yours.

• You can manually choose the mirror or let the installer choose it. I recommend letting the installer choose the best one(s).

• Now, you have to choose the installation disk. I’ll be managing the partition table manually.

• It will take some time to check all the mirrors. It’s weird to run the test at the stage of choosing the partition. Be patient, it’ll take quite some time.

• Here, you have to manage the partitioning. I recommend assigning 16GB (minimum) for the OS to install. You can make changes as you like, but be careful not to destroy your valuable data!

• Everything’s almost done. You’ll see the installation summary.

• Enter the username & password and other details here.

Now, all you have to do is wait patiently until the installation is complete. Once complete, you’ll be prompted to restart your device. Restart and enjoy Antergos!
